Ubisoft supports Notre Dame with €500k donation, and offer free Assassin's Creed Unity for PC to all.

As the smoke clears on the events that unfolded on Monday at the Notre-Dame de Paris, we stand in solidarité with our fellow Parisians and everyone around the world moved by the devastation the fire caused. Notre-Dame is an integral part of Paris, a city to which we are deeply connected. Seeing the monument in peril like this affected us all.

In light of Monday's events, we will be donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral. We encourage all of you who are interested to donate as well. In addition, we want to give everyone the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how. For one week, we will be giving Assassin's Creed Unity away free on PC, for anyone who wants to enjoy it. You can download it now for Uplay PC here:

I've got to say this is very cool of them. I can't help but wonder if the laser-scanning they did of the building for the game could be used by the restoration effort.

I'm sure the sheer amount of photography of that building over the last century means no detail will be left undocumented. Copying it will be easy, as long as they can spend the money.

That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions.

French government since 1905 is ultimately responsible.

Governments ultimately need to help out cultural icons when poo hits fan although here they are still trying to sort things like that out after the earthquakes.

I've heard it's a little more complicated than the Catholic church owns it. I'm not positive, but from what I've heard...

The French Government owns it but allows Catholic Services. They share cooperation between the two in maintaining it. It is very expensive to maintain and thus most of the money to maintain it is via donations rather than simply being from French Taxpayers.

Thus, any new constructions and such are normally from donation money and such.

Notre Dame is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so naturally they'll be offering assistance in the eventual renovation.
