Dragonlance Dragonlance Lives

I do too. I think this is entirely compatible with, and reinforces, messages WotC has given before, that they want to support settings that players enjoy. They want to do it well, though, and this seems to me to suggest that DL isn't at the top of their list - FR is the flagship, and Eberron is being worked on at the moment. Others are aspirations and need decisions to be made in the future (like finding specialists, and they can't assume Cam or Margaret would be available, given they both have other jobs)

David M. Ewalt also reported on Forbes that Chris Perkins says Ravenloft support is coming soon.

I can't believe Ravenloft would be more of a "key" setting than Dragonlance.

From Cam Banks;
Yesterday, Chris Perkins of WotC gave a presentation at PAX East about the future of D&D, including their new plans for the Forgotten Realms and other classic D&D settings. He said that Dragonlance wasn't dead, it just needed a specialist to work on it.
I believe that Dragonlance has a place in D&D's future. I believe there are many talented writers, editors, and developers with the enthusiasm and knowledge of the setting to help them make that a reality, not the least of which are Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I believe Dragonlance has a strong, vibrant, and dedicated fan base hungry for more novels, for more game books, for the very same transmedia experience that they're hoping to promote with their D&D brand.
And I believe that I would love to be a part of that.

Depends what "key" means. As a representative of a genre in D&D, it certainly is (which is why Eberron would be, too). That doesn't mean "we like it more" it "it is more popular" or "it is better"; it just refers to its role in the lineup. Whatever your opinions of various settings are, there is definitely more overlap between FR and DL than there is between, say, FR and Dark Sun or Ravenloft.

I have never understand why when people don't like something they think it shouldn't be made. It easn't it easier to notjust buy it and let the people who enjoy it have access to it?

I agree. I feel the same way when people complain about "splat bloat," as if they are compelled to buy splat books they don't want.

I have never understood fans' failure to acknowledge that publishing budgets have limits, and every book that gets the green light means another book has not.

No, I do not want to see Wizards' D&D5 budget wasted on post-Dark Disciple Krynn. I consider it an embarrassment. Weis and Hickman have done so much else that is excellent -- why not capitalize on some of that and stop tearing open this ancient wound?

It's a rhetorical question -- I know why. All opinion-based ranting aside, Wizards still owns the rights to Dragonlance. So enjoy your new post-"Goddess of Tears" Dragonlance supplements, as I'm sure they will be made and you will snap them up. Me, I will continue to weep for the products on which that money could otherwise have been spent.

Woot? Could you link please? That is exciting news! I realy hope they will make a new 5e take on the war of the lance, I never had the opportunity to play them and from my POV 5e will be he best edition to do so.

I likewise think reprinting existing material is a waste of budget, but the core Dragonlance modules comprise so many pages that I don't think I'd be able to argue against an official D&D5 conversion for the 30th Anniversary. I might even buy it, even though I own half of it in the original AD&D2 rules and the Silver Anniversary SAGA conversion.

...Yeah, so don't mistake me for a non-Dragonlance fan. I'm just specifically a fan of the part before Weis and Hickman lost creative control. The first time.

What's stopping you from just rewinding the clock back to a time before the Age of Mortals and playing in that era, or just having the whole chaos war never happen in your Dragonlance world?

Absolutely nothing. I will do this. You should too.

I'm really excited by this news! I have fond memories of playing AD&D 2nd editions in Dragonlance setting!

This is another reason why I object to repeatedly casting Create Undead on the remains of Dragonlance. Poor Plaguescarred is in for a nasty surprise when he finds out what's happened to Dragonlance post-AD&D2, as I'm sure many have been before him.

DMZ2112 - I have the 3.5 Dragonlance Campaign Setting, my players just didn't play much 3rd. And it didn't see print for 4E. So it will be fun to see support again for DL.
