EN World on Google Chrome

Just testing Google's new browser. So far all looks well here at EN World. I'll follow up if I find any broken stuff. The browser itself is much faster (generally), but little benefit here with the server being the way it is.

Anyone else using it? Any of the EN World staff? It's pretty nifty.

Google Chrome - Download a new browser

EDIT: I take it back. None (not one) of the formatting buttons work. I can type out formatting longhand, but no buttons.

Well I only took a quick look yesterday before going to bed but it seemed nifty. I don't really like the over-simplistic looks of it, but I guess it's not a priority and we're still talking about beta.

The buttons not working is not the browser's fault. They're now broken on IE and FF too so I think it's system error .

I've been using Chrome for a day now. It seems pretty fast compared to IE7. I'm mostly a Firefox kinda guy, but if Google's gonna rule the world I better get on the bandwagon

Yes it is!

I'm getting the buttons consistently working in Firefox (as always) and consistenly not working in Chrome. Similarly the WotC site top menus don't work in Chrome ==> some Javascript bugs they need to work on fixing. I've filed bug reports on both issues with Google just in case.

it sure is nice and quick, although I prefer having my 'address bar' and 'search bar' separated by a quick 'tab' as per firefox, rather than the confusion of having the all in the same place.

Cheers

It does seem to crash a bit, but it is a beta; I won't hold it against them.

The browser itself has a clean layout. The browser seem to render about 1/2 second faster than Firefox. The most visited page feature is neat. Overall, a nice effort, haven't seen a huge reason to switch.

Wait until you have one tab crash but it leaves the rest of the browser standing. That's a feature worth switching for.

I found it to be a bit sub-par, certainly nothing worth switching over.

Well, all the buttons seem to work now.

The only page I use occasionally that doesn't work with Chrome is Facebook. I expect that to be fixed eventually, but spending less time there is probably in my best interest anyway. Also, I use webapps all day and have lost the occasional web post or online office doc to an IE or Firefox crash, so the separate processes for tabs is much appreciated. I'm certainly looking forward to the final release and the ability to extend the browser with add-ons like Firefox.

Well, considering how much of their other stuff is still "beta", I'm not sure it really is a meaningful term for them.

There are two kinds of google betas - stuff that isn't finished, and stuff they can't legally support fully. Chrome is the first kind. There's no reason at all they can't fix all the bugs and call it done. Google News is a permanent beta. It's basically done, they'll just get sued to death by the news agencies if they call it a finished product. Likewise, gmail is a permanent beta because they can't guarantee it. You could loose your mail tomorrow and they'd say "well, it's beta." Not that it's any different than Yahoo mail or similar products - google just has a different legal philosophy and their engineers have a stronger influence.
