Application to block browser adverts?

I'm curious to know if there are any applications that I can download and install on my computer that will help to block web browser advertisements.

I know that some web browsers have settings that can be enabled to cut down the adverts, but I find that even when they are enabled, they aren't always effective. Also would like app to block flash animations, they're disgustingly annoying.

For Firefox...

- Adblock Plus (don't use that myself, but gets good reviews)
- NoScript for flashblocking (and scriptblocking in general)

For IE...

- use Firefox instead, then see above

AdBlock Plus is what you want, yep. NoScript, on the other hand, is great. . . but very demanding for most users, simply because most users don't know which sites to block scripts from. On many websites, there are scripts coming in from several secondary sites, and NoScript will list all of these, along with the main. Judging what's what requires a fair amount of knowledge about sites in general, and some [types] in particular, or a heck of a lot of luck. And maybe patience too.

On this basis, even though NoScript provides web security possibly unrivalled, I always install ABP on PCs I've set up or worked on (well, I wouldn't, if anyone objected, but no-one has so far), and never NS. I've showed the latter to some people, and well, their reactions were enough to further convince me that's the best way of going about it.

Anyway, with ABP, flash stuff will often show a little translucent tab, above the flash at top right IIRC, and you can click on that, and tell the add-on to block that particular thing, or - more often - selectively block stuff from a web address pattern. And *many* things are simply blocked by default anyway, according to a list, if you decide to subscribe to one (e.g., Easylist USA) when you install the add-on.

edit --- and if ABP doesn't do everything you want it to, you might want to check out Flashblock, just to make sure (to use with ABP, not instead of, btw).

Noscript may seem like overkill, but IMHO far too many websites use invasive and bandwith wasting scripts. To say nothing of the bAdvertisers many website CHOOSE to stand up to be counted with by allowing script based ads in the first place.

Just installed Firefox and I'm getting a "Page Load Error" when I try and access the WotC forums. Any idea?

Hmm, odd I managed to log into the wotcboards through firefox a moment ago.

Are you a DDI subscriber? Maybe the security checks are causing the issue?

Deleting your forums.gleemax.com cookies will fix the endless "Redirect Loop" in FireFox.

From FireFox 3.0:
1. Select the Tools->Options menu
2. Select the Privacy icon on the top of the dialog
3. Click the "Show Cookies..." button
4. Select the "forums.gleemax.com" site from the list
5. Press the "Remove Cookies" button
6. Try going to http://forums.gleemax.com again.

We have seen this occur when FireFox is first installed and the option to convert the IE cookies is chosen.

I know its not a server config problem cause' obviously i'm posting here from my windows internet explorer... what would be causing the forums to not load up in my mozilla firefox? Desperately need help... Thanks.

Edit: btw... my cookies are not blocked from this site so thats not the issue

Do you have a redirect remover plug-in in FF?? If you do, set up an exception (if possible) for the plugin.

no.. i do not have that plug-in... and I'm still having the same issue. I'm at the end of my rope with this and there is no solution in sight.

Just in case you are curious as to what, technically, is going on here...

When FireFox imports the IE cookies it renames the "forums.gleemax.com" host name in the cookies to ".forums.gleemax.com" (note the extraneous "." prefix). I am not sure why FireFox is doing this (it should leave the host as-is during the import) but it may be doing this in an attempt to be RFC 2965 compliant for domain-match rules.

When you attempt to connect to http://forums.gleemax.com using FireFox this triggers the endless redirect loop as the forums site attempts to log you back using the converted cookies containing the incorrect host name.

If you delete the cookies, specifically the "communityuserid" cookie, you will now be able to connect to the site again without it attempting to log you back in (and thus getting stuck in the endless redirect loop).

Once you log back in, FireFox will recreate the cookies with the correct host name and "all is well".
