Hmmmm. I just got an email from "Wizards of the Coast" telling me that my account could be deactivated due to not having logged in for over a year. Except that I was there less than month ago on the SoW AP boards, not to mention my DDI account that I've also used last month.
Lots of links to log in, change my password and update account info. And warnings I better hurry before my account is deleted. I'm guessing that it's because of the DDI stuff, they want crerdit card info. Nice. Anyone else get anything like this?
i did too (regarding "forum account") though, like you, I was logged in somewhat recently (definetly more recently than "over a year" that it mentions).
Part of me thinks it might have to do with how they changed their forum accounts several months back when gleemax went away, it could be those 'old forum accounts' that are getting nuked.
But, without more actual information, anything i say is just a guess and speculation.

And I got a followup email saying to disregard the message (it was an error)

It seems that they broke their boards:
"Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Size of a request header field exceeds server limit."
Granted, I browse with Safari and have not tried loading their boards with a different browser.
edit: it loads in Firefox. I had to nuke the Gleemax cookies in Safari, for the boards to load again.

I got that email as well, and thought that it was entirely plausible since I haven't been to the site in quite a while. I clicked on the link but was very cautious to make sure that the URL I went to actually said wizards.com (or gleemax.com).
If you get emails like this that you doubt the validity of (especially when they're asking you to log in and update your information) it's usually best to don't click on any links in the email and go straight to the website in question via your bookmarks or by just typing in the address. If it's a valid request to update your information then you will probably see information about it just after you log in. If nothing jumps out at you then it was probably a phishing email.
(And, wow, my spellchecker actually recognized "phishing".)
I didn't follow my own advice this time because it was only WotC forums and not a bank. What are they gonna do if they get my password, post to the forums in my name? I'm not a DDI subscriber, so my credit card isn't involved at all.
