Check out these free 3.5 tools

Just wanted to drop a note to let you all know about two utilities that I created over the last couple of years for use with D&D 3.5. Both of these tools are free (for non-commercial use):

CoolTools2 is a set of editors to view and print monsters, spells, domains, and equipment from the 3.5 SRD; you can also add custom items.

Treasure Generator generates individual, random treasure items or treasure hoards.

Both of these tools require the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.5 or higher.

You can download the tools from Keith's D&D Page.

Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing them, Keith. I'll try to post some constructive feedback, if any comes to mind. Just heading off to download them now. . .

Thanks, Aus_Snow. I would appreciate any feedback.

I was considering writing some tools for 4E, but it looks like the new GSL doesn't allow me to do that. Too bad.

So I may go back and add to/clean up these tools. Maybe merge them into a single tool.

Being able to edit the SRD files would actually be really nice. There's a lot of stuff out there that builds on the SRD, for example Pathfinder.

Being able to take and generate a new version of these files that are modified with the Pathfinder chances would be _much_ easier if we could start with the SRD files and then make the tweaks and changes from there. Or maybe just include a version of the SRD files that are editable so that we can play around with those.

Of course if you do that, then folks are going to want to be able to open/close different datasets.

So far it looks like a nifty little thing. Probably as quick if not quicker for looking up various bits. Which makes me think...

What about adding a Class editor (with the ability to specify whether it's a "base" or "PrC") and a Feats editor?

I like the tabbed approach you've got going, a Class editor would benefit from such a thing as well.

Doing this, folks could actually build themselves a handy database of all kinds of things.

I'm of mixed minds about the fact that exporting something with a blank field means that nothing shows up. For example, Aid vs. Acid Arrow. Aid has the "Target" field filled in so it shows up in the export but Acid Arrow is blank so it doesn't have a Target field in the export.

Hope some of this was useful. It's still a pretty nifty little thing.

Editing and reproducing the SRD files are outside the scope of what I'm trying to do with these tools. The basic idea, especially with the editors and the export capability, is to have a quick reference to much of the SRD items and to be able to export and print out custom spell lists (for a spell book), custom monsters (for use by a DM during a game session), and so on.

I'm working on version 3.0 of CoolTools. I've pulled it into Eclipse and did some re-factoring to clean up redundant code and fix a few minor bugs.

While doing that, I added a Feats editor and I'm going to add a Skills editor. A class editor also sounds like a reasonable idea.

I also want to pull my Treasure Generator in to the overall CoolTools framework. Did you get a look at that?

This is partially an artifact of the browser you use. I use Firefox and in Firefox, the blank fields show up as full, empty cells. I can take a look at the transformer files to see if adding a couple of spaces (or doing something similar) fixes the problem in Internet Explorer.
