BBC America Picks Up 5th Series Of Doctor Who

BBC America has obtained the rights to the 2010 series of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith, outbidding SyFy for the show.

The show will appear on BBC America "shortly after its BBC1 launch", making for a much shorter gap between UK and US viewings.

When BBC America showed Torchwood: Children of Earth, it achieved its highest viewing figures ever, getting just over half of the UK viewing figures of 6 million.

That's going to decrease the available viewing populace by quite a bit. While everyone with cable gets SyFy, not nearly as many get BBCA. Overall It won't matter to me (or any other computer savvy hardcore fan) because I'll be downloading them like normal on the day after it comes out on the BBC and picking up the series box set later when it comes out.

In talking to people they often give me a knee jerk reaction of "Oh, I don't get BBC America", but then they look it up and then it turns out they *do* get BBCA.

Secondly, SyFy never really gave Doctor Who much attention. Their schedule is always otherwise occupied with marathon reruns of Tru Calling and Tales from the Darkside

I have heard that SyFy tends to chop up the episodes of DW. I'm unsure wether it is for content or simply running time. My reaction however is not knee jerk by any means. I get BBCA, however I had to pay extra for it because its one of the more expensive channels for my provider.
