Doctor Who is TV's "Most successful sci-fi show"
During the Comic-Con Doctor Who panel today, there was a surprise visit from Guinness World Records. Doctor Who was announced as being not only the longest-running sci-fi show in the world, but "the most successful sci-fi show on TV full stop".
Domestic (in the UK) viewing figures for Doctor Who range from 8-12 million viewers, dwarfing cult favourites such as the new Battlestar Galactica (2-3 million US viewers) and even Buffy The Vampire Slayer in its prime (4-6 million viewers). In the US, sci-fi shows are generally considered successful with 2-3 million viewers. This makes Doctor Who THE biggest sci-fi TV franchise in the world by a large margin.
Torchwood: Children of Earth got a great run, also. In the UK 6 million viewers followed the 5-day story. BBC America reshowed the series in the US last week.
Adding in merchandising such as CDs, toys and so on, the BBC's flagship show has proved to be a monumental success!
