Throughout all editions of Dungeons & Dragons, Asmodeus has been depicted as the most powerful, cunning devil. In 4th Edition, he has been elevated to godhood.

In 4th Edition

Asmodeus is the evil god of tyranny and domination. He rules the Nine Hells with an iron fist and a silver tongue. Aside from devils, evil creatures such as rakshasas pay him homage, and evil tieflings and warlocks are drawn to his dark cults. His rules are strict and his punishments harsh:

  • Seek power over others, that you might rule with strength as the Lord of Hell does.
  • Repay evil with evil. If others are kind to you, exploit their weakness for your own gain.
  • Show neither pity nor mercy to those who are caught underfoot as you climb your way to power. The weak do not deserve compassion.

Below is a compilation of data related to Asmodeus from official Wizards of the Coast sources:

  • Asmodeus is the evil god of the Nine Hells. He is patron of the powerful, god of tyranny and domination, and the commander of devils. (PHB, pg. 23)
  • Some tales say that humans were the creation of a god whose name is no longer known, a god killed in the war against the primordials or perhaps assassinated by another deity (Asmodeus and Zehir are often accused of the deed). (PHB, pg. 47)
  • Long ago a forgotten race of devils created a secret path to power and taught it to the tieflings of old to weaken their fealty to Asmodeus. In his wrath, Asmodeus destroyed the scheming devils and struck their very names from the memory of all beings. (PHB, pg. 130)
  • The Nine Hells is the home of Asmodeus and the devils. This plane is a dark, fiery world of continent-sized caverns ruled by warring princelings, though all are ultimately under the iron fist of Asmodeus. (DMG, pg. 160)
  • Asmodeus was the first god to kill another god. (DMG, pg. 162)
  • Asmodeus' exarchs are devils. (DMG, pg. 162)
  • Long ago, Asmodeus was a powerful divine servant who chose to rebel against the god he served. At the head of an army of like-minded creatures, Asmodeus slew his divine master. For their betrayal, he and his followers were cursed with monstrous forms and imprisoned within the fuming ruin of the murdered god’s dominion. (MM, pg. 60)
  • The archdevil Levistus was trapped forever by Asmodeus for some great betrayal. (MM, pg. 61)
  • Asmodeus’s daughter, the fiendishly beautiful Glasya, rules Malbolge, the sixth Hell. (MM, pg. 61)
  • The darkest of Cania’s rifts plunge hundreds of miles further down to Nessus, the ninth and deepest of the Hells. This is home to the god-tyrant Asmodeus, father of all devils. (MM, pg. 61)
