Fluff

Background

Vixo hatched in a Kobold community in the mountains, somewhere far underground in Ea. He enjoyed a privelidged upbringing among the brood of the primary matriarch of a prominent claw (tribe). Well fed and with plenty of free time, he developed into a strong, healthy young kobold who took advantage of those around him. His coming of age ceremony saw him named Vixonostrak Guenwing and he was proud, for one day he would be called upon to do important things in the name of the matriarch. Before that would ever happen, his world would come crashing down.

The community warren was suddenly under attack from all around! Dark dwarven slavers had come in force to capture them. The Matriarch desperately tried to escape while the third wave of metal-clad dwarves crashed through the cavern wall. Vixo fought carefully, moving from area to area, trying to fight where the kobolds had the advantage of numbers. Eventually he could no longer find such a fight, and was cornered and captured. He learned later that he had become the property of Halrum Ironflow and the Ironflow clan.

Life as a servant in the Ironflow clan of dwarves was hard, and he did his best to keep out of sight when possible. Beaten if he did anything wrong, and not fed, he survived by scrounging leftovers from their meals, which he cleaned up after. He only learned a couple words of the dwarven tongue in his time with them. For yet again, trouble was imminent.

The fighting started suddenly, and was very confusing for Vixo. He saw dwarves fighting dwarves, and couldn't tell which side had what agenda. He caught glimpses of stranger creatures in the distance, hidden by shadow. He knew better than to try to get closer. He used his knowledge of the clan hold to hide for a time, but eventually he was found, and enslaved by new masters – Illithids. His poor little mind was dominated and he served them for quite some time. Eventually moved to an outpost near the surface, he became involved in the operations of a slave market.

When adventurers came to the market, they overthrew the master. Released from his mental prison, Vixo was disoriented. The first thing he saw was a tall dragonborn in gleaming armor, poised with a sword, ready to strike him down. Vixo fell to his bony knees and begged for mercy. The mighty warrior Srthohk showed mercy that day and came to like the little kobold that looked up to him with awe. Vixo asked Srthohk about his past, but the stoic dragonborn said little about it, other than he originally came from the Kingdom of Jade.

Vixo helped the adventurers how he was able, and learned to incorporate the teachings of Srthohk into his own opportunistic fighting style. He travelled with the group until they came to Daunton, but due to personality conflicts, the group broke up. Srthohk hired on with a caravan as a guard, but they did not want Vixo along, so they said their goodbyes.

Still new to the city way of life, Vixo has found welcome among the adventuring community of the Hanged Man tavern.

Personality: Vixo's demeanor changes depending on the situation he is facing. He shows those who are seen as equals or regarded as being more powerful or important than him a great deal of respect. Those who are viewed as weaker or less important are expected to respect him. If they don't, he becomes mean and will go out of his way to harass them. If they do show him respect, he will take advantage and order them around. So far, this attitude has served him just fine through thick and thin. He values companionship, though he finds it hard to make friends in Daunton.

Physical Description: A small figure, dressed in carefully fitted leathers. Kobold, with dull yellow scales, green-brown claws and horns, and beady black eyes. He also wears the gear of an adventurer, with daggers at his waist and a backpack slung over his shoulders. His movements are smooth and deliberate, and his eyes dart back and forth at signs of movement.

Hooks

  • Hook 1 - Vixo was separated from his claw (tribe) of Kobolds and enslaved. He has wondered if he is the last remaining, or only free Kobold of the Guenwing claw.
  • Hook 2 - Vixo was involved in a slaver operation while dominated by an Illithid master. He doesn't remember what he has done in that capacity.

Kicker

  • Kicker - His mentor Srthohk is an expatriate of the Jade Kingdom. Banished for political reasons, he divests himself of companions quickly. He could have taken Vixo with him on the Caravan, and his adventuring group didn't break up, Srthohk just left. Vixo's hero is on the run from something or someone.

      Incidentally, it might make a lot more sense to just have your character be from Ea. It's a traditional fantasy area with has illithids already. The current position of the Kingdom of Jade isn't set relative to Daunton. It could wind up being on another plane entirely (if it's ever addressed).--~~

      Looks good. The only thing I want to point out is that you can use Blinding Barrage with your magic dagger. Maybe it zips from enemy to enemy like a batarang, I dunno, but the point is you lose on average 1 point of damage for +2 to hit, which seems like a good trade to me when a hit is the difference between blinding or not. So you might want to write out the attack stats for the dagger. Anyway, approved.
