Dark Sun is returning as a Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting, and Wizards of the Coast isn't shying away from the world's adult themes. Wizards will release two Dark Sun books, one of which features the brand new Psion class. The two books will be rated 18+, with a content warning of depictions of slavery, nudity, and violence. In a press event held ahead of Gen Con, Wizards' officials noted that the company's lawyers recommended that the books be shrink wrapped as an extra layer of precaution. At Gen Con, a gory trailer was shown to fans, showing Psions and warriors brutally eviscerating their foes.
Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic setting in which magic is poisoning the world of Athas. The various city-states of Athas will represent various kinds of apocalyptic stories that can be told within the world. The setting was initially launched in 1991 and was also featured as part of D&D's Fourth Edition.
The new Dark Sun products will be the featured products of the Season of Survival, which will run in early 2027. Two new books will be published. Edge of Oblivion is a new campaign setting guide for Dark Sun, while Blood & Power is a new player-facing guide featuring the Psion class. A new limited edition Player's Handbook will also be released featuring Dark Sun artwork. In total, Wizards plans to release approximately 500 pages of content for Dark Sun.
No exact release dates were announced for the new Dark Sun products, but they'll be the first D&D products of 2027.
