Looking At The Index Card RPG, Part Two

In this second part of our coverage of The Index Card RPG (ICRPG), we talk to its creator Hankerin Ferinale, creator of Drunkens & Dragons on YouTube, author, and owner of Runehammer Games. Ferinale was interviewed while at Gen Con, and talked about how he went from working a full time job to being a full-time creator and writer and his future plans. Who is Hankerin Ferinale?
Hankerin is a long time gamer. YouTube videos & D&D pulled him in to talk about using literature, science, intellect, and crafting in the creation of RPG game play. Index Card RPG sprang from there.

Why should I get ICRPG?
ICRPG is a good fit for a modern game. Modern means after Dungeon World, Fate, etc. Not so hefty, so it can draw more people in. It cuts out what isn’t needed (derivative math) and hones in on what is important—fast and fun play. Also it rewards users of the PDF with continuing upgraded content (five adventures were added after initial release for example).

The core rulebook will be followed by Worlds, Good, and Evil books. Worlds covers fantasy Alfheim, Warpshell for sci-fi, and Ghost Mountain, a horror western setting. Ghost Mountain will a side-view map that encourages 3D thinking.

Good will expand the Core with hero stories, new equipment, high level play, and how to make being good interesting. Evil will include new monsters, anti-heroes, traps, and how to not let evil take over the world.

How did Hankerin know it was time to go full-time creator?
The creative momentum was there. Hankerin put so much into RPGs and content creation and he and those watching his efforts were so excited he knew it was time. He overcame his self-doubt, capitalized on the energy, and embraced how small the world is getting by expanding his table top play with virtual play.

Future creative plans?
ICRPG work continues. Hankerin has two fantasy novels on Amazon and is working on a third along with a Warpshell (sci-fi) novel. He is designing his second card game also. Runehammer Games could go from one man to a company someday.

One thing you want to say directly to other gamers?
You can do it. The roots of RPG design are all in your hands. Go for it. We are the garage band that doesn’t want to sell out (but still needs to eat). We do the RPG work ourselves.

What did you learn on your first-time Gen Con 50 journey?
Gen Con is an RPG birthday party, not your RPG life. Some RPGs are packaged as a rebirth of the hobby. But we gamers have been here the whole time and a long time. We are the voice of the table. Gaming at the table (virtual also) with friends is ultimately what RPGs are all about.

Final words?
Strength and honor matter. Rise. Power up. Be potent. Don’t take crap. Stand your ground. Run RPGs to the best of your ability.
