RPG Crowdfunding News – Grimmerspace, Dust Wardens, The After plus 6 Dice Kickstarters

From the projects ending between June 21 to 27, I look at 9 crowdfunding RPGs and 6 dice Kickstarters. Normally I’d try to feature one or two dice offerings, but with six, I bundled them all here with pictures of the dice for us to drool over.

Grimmerspace by Iron GM Games

  • END DATE: Sun, June 23 2019 11:59 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Starfinder
  • PROJECT TYPE: Campaign setting
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 for all of the PDFs
  • NOTE: The creator’s list is a who’s who: Sean Patrick Astin, Rone Barton, Lou Agresta, Wolfgang Baur, Jason Bulmahn, Adam Daigle, Shanna Germain, Ben McFarland, Richard Pett, James L. Sutter, and Greg Vaughan. Every creator is an RPG rockstar but it is worth pointing out that Owen K.C. Stephens, Paizo's Starfinder Design Lead, is working on this Starfinder compatible project.
Grimmerspace is set in a non-magical, science-fiction horror universe, and the citizens of Grimmerspace (“Grimmers”) are veterans of fighting alien abominations from the depths. The evil Sundermages -- near-immortal sorcerers wielding godlike power -- ripped into their universe not long ago through a vast tear in space-time called the Seethe. As the Seethe leaks magic into their galaxy for the first time, the Sundermages plot from the shadows to conquer the five distinct, technological civilizations of Grimmerspace. Soon, science and magic will come to world-ending blows. The Grimmerspace will include five game books and a quick-start guide offering over 14 adventures that explore 14 unique locales across the Gliding Rim galaxy.”

Sundered Ages by Derrick Hermansdorfer

  • END DATE: Thu, June 20 2019 9:17 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): d20
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $50 for multiple PDFs
“A class free, d20, tabletop, fantasy adventure game where player creativity can flourish. Sundered Ages is a tabletop role-playing game that reexamines the class structure of many traditional tabletop staples. The core innovation of Sundered Ages is that classes have been completely torn out and replaced with a pick-and-play system of character skills. Sundered Ages is more than just a fantastic system for slinging spells and battling monstrous creatures. It is a rich world setting with a grand narrative, within which all of the modular adventures are set.”

The After: Post-Apocalyptic Action for Savage Worlds by Jon Gibbons (Jade Monkey Studios)

  • END DATE: Fri, June 21 2019 2:24 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Campaign setting
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £20 for PDF and POD of the book
THE AFTER is a setting of savage frontier action (think The Revenant or Jeremiah Johnson) in a sci-fi post-apocalyptic world (think Annihilation or The Quiet Place). It uses the newly retooled Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. THE AFTER is set in the northwestern reaches of the broken North American continent. You play survivors of the shattered human race trying to rebuild their world after nearly a century of alien predation and war. The utterly destructive invasion of Earth, followed by a terrifying war between rival Alien species far more advanced than mankind, has left the Earth a broken version of its former self. Only in the world’s most sparsely populated areas have people survived: areas that were ignored or undervalued by the the rampaging alien forces. THE AFTER will be a full-color, 150+ page book with detailed, provocative artwork by Jon Gibbons. The book will feature new playable races, new Arcane Backgrounds, new Edges and Hindrances, additional rules to evoke the unique feeling of the setting - including scavenging, item decay and deterioration, a Bestiary of foes and an extensive Gazetteer of the Wind River region of Modern Wyoming, where the setting takes place.”

Dust Wardens by Nora Blake

  • END DATE: Mon, June 24 2019 8:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by the Apocalypse
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $5 for the PDF of the book
“A queer RPG about community and connection in a haunted roadside apocalypse! Dust Wardens is about bonds. It's about polyamory and queer families and safe havens in a world that wants to hurt us. It's about seeing problems that others refuse to solve and taking the matters into our own hands. In this game, we will take on the role of the titular Dust Wardens, people bound together by a force called Limerence which allows us to draw upon potent magical powers. Dust Wardens has a similar structure to Powered by the Apocalypse games, with the caveat that there are no playbooks, and it uses a tarot deck instead of dice.”

Zoetrope - Time Travel Role Playing by Dane Asmund

  • END DATE: Tue, June 25 2019 2:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rule deck
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $80 + $10 US shipping for both decks and all expansions
Time got all mixed up, it's time to head back and fix it. Wait-- No! Don't shoot that guy, that's who we were here to save! Oh well, let's rewind and try again. A fast and easy time travel-focused roleplaying game. Will you fix time, or f*ck it up worse? Zoetrope is a simple to learn and fun to play, card-based time travel role playing game. You'll need 2-3+ players and a story leader, who will explain what happens in the world and how the player's actions affect the world around them. No one needs to show up to the table with any ideas of what they are doing, the various card decks help ensure even the story leader has resources to make the game unfold without any preparation. And no confusing event management-- because you will be placing cards on the table in a visual timeline, you will always know what events are changing due to time travel.”

Rust Hulks by Sam Sorensen

  • END DATE: Tue, June 25 2019 11:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by the Apocalypse
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for the PDF of the game
“A lo-fi sci-fi space trucking tabletop RPG, Powered by the Apocalypse. Rust Hulks is a tabletop roleplaying game about playing space truckers in a low-fidelity science-fiction future. In Rust Hulks, you will play as the crew of a large, derelict spaceship. You will fly around the solar system picking up jobs, earning credits, scraping through hulks, improving your skills, and expanding your ship. Rust Hulks is like Alien. Or Firefly. Or some parts of Star Wars. Everything is used, rusty, and worn-down. Your ship is cannibalized from a dozen other ships and tweaked or patched with every piece of junk and scrap you can find. It's really less a singular ship than it is a collection of individual rooms, held together with shoestrings and chewing gum. There are no laser blasters, no energy shields, and no gleaming computers. Instead, there are wooden crates, canned rations, and radar scanners. Your computers are little more than fancy calculators, your ship is armored with scrap metal, and your guns spit hot lead.”

Monsters of Murka Campaign Setting for 5e DnD by Jaron R. M. Johnson

  • END DATE: Fri, June 21 2019 11:59 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons 5e
  • PROJECT TYPE: Campaign setting
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for the PDF of the setting
“A hilarious campaign setting designed for fifth edition, brimming with parody, political satire, bad puns, and much, much more. Murka was once a land of great promise. People flocked to it from across the known worlds. It was a place of myriad creatures, creeds, and most importantly, connections, each seeking its place among beautiful landscapes and bountiful resources. After centuries of development, prosperous cities dot the countryside. Their populations hail from distant lands, yet they thrive, together, with the common goal of progress, and of prosperity. The populace share a common goal of achieving that which all sought; The Murkan Dream.”

Ghaulareth's Vengeance by Diego Pisa Artworks
New Artifacts, Monsters and NPCs to boost your games.

  • END DATE: Thu, June 27 2019 12:30 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Campaign setting
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €9 for the PDF and POD of the book, cards, and map
Welcome to Daleda Gorth, errr, beware. Born from the thirst for revenge against Harenfall's domain, it's a place full of pirates, brigands and ex-slaves, escaped from the tyrannic domain of nobles. In addition to the city, you'll be able to explore many other territories of the supplement's setting. The idea is to give players the possibility to explore multiple types of adventure locales: haunted mansions, islands, underworlds, forests. Everything connected to the problems that are happening in their start point, the City of Daleda Gorth. To make this book something you can use in every system you play, now and in the future, rules inside the book won't be based on numbers which are different in every game, but they'll be based in final results which are pretty the same in every game. This publication base page count is 24 pages, but through stretch goals and the generosity of content patrons my goal is to increase it to 36 pages or more. Every book will be saddle stitched, 8.5x11 inches big format, much like a big comic book, which will give enough space for a bunch of new cool content, as well as allowing enough space to show better illustrations and graphics.”

Grimmerspace looks pretty sick. Won't be running it with Starfinder, but as a setting it's very cool. Has a very big Chronicles of Riddick vibe going on.

Nice selection this week Egg. I'm already in on The After, Jon's artwork was enough to get me on board and the fact that it's a SWADE product, well... Sundered Ages has me a little confused, though. Haven't classless systems, even in d20, been around for a while?

Thanks, Superchunk77!

And thanks to Egg for the mention! Very much appreciated! :)

Among the multitude of different adventure scenarios and horror subgenres available to players, you can definitely play through Grimmerspace Chronicles of Riddick style among the polities of the Crux at the Gliding Rim's center. Move out toward the Edge of the galaxy and you're more talking Pitch Black and Riddick. Go down the Gyre below the G-Rim and things gets Hellraiser meets Sonny the Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs bird right quick. ;)

For anyone who wants to get a feel for Grimmerspace, Lou will be running a game in a few minutes on the Roll20 Indie Showcase. https://twitter.com/roll20app/status/1138906418596188160

It was really cool to be able to work with him to bring that adventure to Roll20. :)

That game was a lot of fun to watch! As a co-designer of the Abattoir 8 adventure, I almost felt personally guilty when none of the players seemed to connect their attacks with the threat in Encounter Zone 1 (though that bullet-riddled ceiling won't be talkin' smack anytime soon). That down the block procession of consistently low die rolls seemed statistically unlikely. Jinx! The curse of Abattoir 8!

I don't know if anyone's noticed, Sundered Ages has been canceled. I'm glad the reaction to the project impressed upon the creator how desirable physical books still are. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes from that in the future.
