How does a pre-industrial society hang together with super-powerful individuals and groups wandering the land at will, especially as these people rocket up in personal power in just a few years?

The last game I ran, I did have the common problem - the rogue, with better Initiative, similar AC, and high damage from sneak attack, left the party paladin feeling a tad... unimportant in combat. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Yeah, but I think you're treating the discussion as if folks are choosing their wordign along strict logical lines, when that behavior is not terribly common. "Any DM (OSR or not)..." may not be strictly true. Though, it may be - they may *see* the logic, but reject it. But whatever the case, in spending your time refuting the strict statement, you miss the actual point that perhaps lots...

Well, it isn't like the pantheon and cultural structure are cleanly separable. The gods support particular social structures. And, in our fantasy worlds, the gods have a say in things - if a god gives spell power to elvish worshippers/clerics, and does not give power to non-elves, that's going to reinforce religion being a racial characteristic. Um... we have the phrase lingua franca...

Or, the also not-uncommon "start at 3rd level". Note that "a half-dozen people before you suggested X" does not actually mean that those half-dozen are representative. Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

Occasionally a game mechanic jumps out at me, and makes me think "wow!" -- it's not always brand new, and sometimes it builds on something else, or sometimes it's just new to me, but I like it when a simple mechanic catches my eye. Here's a couple of my favourites: D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about...

With respect, this doesn't tell us anything until you also do a measure of how fast PCs are expected to *lose* hit points. If AD&D monsters generally did less damage, or an AD&D party dealt with far fewer monsters in a day, yes, it could be moot.

I am not sure that this is somehow more true of gnomes than it is of, say, elves, with all the sub-races that have been out there. And, heavens forfend you can't summarize *an entire race of people* in a neat little stereotype! The horror!

It matters to my play experience. It probably impacts the choices I make in play. So, by that measure, it makes a difference in the campaign. Also, as a GM, I take the player choices to be indicative of things they want to see. If you play a gnome, we're probably going to see a lot more gnome culture and social role in the game than if nobody chose to play a gnome. That probably means...

We did a skit about that in last week's podcast, with a player suggesting more and more outlandish races, starting with deep gnomes and tieflings, through aaracokra and minotaurs, to mind flayers and dragons, to daleks and Borg Queens, to, eventually, V'ger. The idea of somebody playing V'ger as a PC still cracks me up.

You also get into some interesting sticky wicket scenarios with that one. That means with a 2nd level spell a cleric can effectively "trap souls" for long periods of time. Which depending on your cosmology could be very problematic.

A constant theme of balance discussions is what levels you are discussing them. Many things have different balance perspective depending on what levels you consider them. But even though dnd has levels 1-20, its common knowledge that the majority of games don't play the full level range. There are many a group that will never play a 20th level character, and so balance discussions at that...

Yes. I agree. That's exactly the point. But when you tell them the speed of light, or how gravity scales, you are telling them how the fantasy universe works! Because when the GM says these things, they are Truth. And players...

As a physicist, my advice: don't go there. One of the big points we get to when we look at the fundamental constants is not just that "Hey, the physical constants are exactly what they are", but "Hey, if the physical constants change even a small bit, life (and even matter) as we know it ceases to exist." This is one answer to the question of "Why is the Universe exactly the way it is?"...

I tend to agree. "Need" is an absolute, and there are few absolutes that actually hold for us. Mechanics may make it easier to make such challenges, and/or make them eaiser for players to accept. "Fidelity" has two connotations. One is "strict adherence" - this is like a "high-fidelity recording". I don't think that's the sense meant here. The sense intended here is probably...

That's because you are again swapping between different kinds of "challenge" willy-nilly. We typically talk about "challenge the player" and "challenge the character" in a rather game-centered* manner. If I had you a sudoku puzzle to solve, with no reference to the mechanics your character uses, I am challenging you, the player. If I give a strictly constructed skill challenge (make skill...

There are almost no original IPs... in movies. In print (novels and comic books, for example) there's loads of new stuff. It is far, far cheaper to produce a novel or comic book run than it is to produce a movie, so it will often make far more sense to take something that's at least been tried out in the public arena before you spend $75 million and more on a movie.

The . . . like, metaphysical explanation I think I had in my head was that in the New World Order you can teleport anywhere you've been, and since the box is tied to Risuri's land due to its connection to the Fey Titans, Heid basically thought really hard at it, until he believed that he *was* the box, and he-as-box willed him-as-box-self to teleport back to Risur, because it was the only way to...

We're talking about how we pretend to be elves, Celebrim. Expect depth to match the topic. Consider it less an observation of the nature of love, and more an observation of the nature of people, and it will probably be more functional for you.

I think we get a sense of it, at least. So, here's the difference - you define viability in terms of "pulling weight", doing damage, and such. And I can accept that as something that can be important enough to a player to be a deal-breaker. Most of the time, I figure even-handedness in spreading around effectiveness is a useful thing for a game's design. But, my personal definition of...

In a very practical sense, nothing that isn't D&D has really caught on. What was the statistic Morrus gave - 40 million people play D&D? By comparison to that, everything else is just an corner experiment, isn't it? Market realities have so much say in the success of a line that I don't think we can say market success speaks to the whether the mechanical design is flawed in concept all that...

With respect, two things - 1) I was speaking about a challenge *to the core of the character*. You are talking about a challenge to *you*, the player. You don't get to change th referent, and then asses my statement against the new referent. 2) I was also pretty clear about what I was talking about when I spoke of challenge in this context. If Chris Claremont writes a comic book about...

  • 12:27 PM - Aldarc mentioned Morrus in post Why do you play games other than D&D?
Four pages in and no one has still linked or contextualized the original tweet? ORIGINAL TWEET THAT Morrus REFERENCES HERE Why play a RPG other than D&D? For the professional game designers out there working on non-D&D systems, do you try to do what D&D already does well but do it better? Or, do you look at what D&D doesn't do well and try to make your mark there? And here are some follow-up questions that they ask some of the responding posts that tease at the issues that press the author: For argument's sake, let's assume that most new RPG players are getting pulled in by 5e (I suspect that's true, but I couldn't produce hard evidence). So, as a professional game developer competing with 5e, how do you lure those players? How do you answer that important question? Interesting. D&D is obviously the 800 pound gorilla in the room. What's your thinking here about ignoring it? It has such an impact on the industry. Has ignoring D&D translated into business success? Has it pulled in customers? I'm not trying to sell anybody on D&D being the only RPG worth playing (I feel like I...

If I click 'mark forum as read' it does so, until I refresh the page, then they're all unread again. There hasn't been a new post since the 26th, which is unusual.

...nely concerned about some of you harassing me and my family in real life.) And now I'm a "sock puppet" and a liar. Yes, I've posted 4,200 times on Enworld for the purpose of trolling warlord fans. Garthanos is behaving despicably: putting me on ignore and then denigrating me behind my back. If he wants to ignore me he should ignore me. One again, a reminder: I'm criticizing a concept in RPG design. If there's been a theme to my posting, it's that I'm vehemently opposed to any sort of imposition of thoughts/emotions/actions on my characters. Maybe I'm too fanatical on that position. Like Emerikol is about "disassociative mechanics" or Saelorn is about using out-of-character knowledge or Tony is about the need for non-magical abilities. That's my thing, and I'm 100% consistent about it (or at least I think I am) and I adamantly oppose anything that starts to infringe on it. If that gets you so angry you have to make personal attacks to combat it, you need help. FFS. EDIT: @Morrus. I'm sorry for "going there" in this thread. I just shouldn't have even said the world warlord. I will try to just stay away from this topic completely from now on. It irks me that I have to be silent on something I care about just because some people just can't handle it, but I will try to do so.

Morrus I know it's low priority, but CM is straight up broken today. I tried to post something and it said "This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 37372418 seconds." That's not a typo, I C&P'd it. Also, thread read status is broken in all subforums (everything shows as unread and won't change), recent threads aren't showing, and somehow goldomark has managed to post ahead of the OP in two threads, despite a date tag up to 2 weeks after the OP. Hacked?

  • 12:20 AM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
I gotta agree with Morrus on the whole CN thing. Thing is, most people, really, are lawful by D&D standards. They follow rules, they work (reasonably well) in groups every day and generally aren't out there to stir things up. Funny thing is, I think most players choose CN because they don't want to allow the DM to have any hooks into their behavior. It's really a shame that 5e ejected "unaligned" because, frankly, I think that's what most folks mean when they say CN. Sorry, but, if your chaotic neutral character is 100% responsible and trustworthy, he's not actually CN.

  • 05:08 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
THAC0 is clearly preferable to BAB, for two reasons. One, it sounds cooler, and closer to the action of hitting. THAC0. It's an aptonym. Second, it is easier. As Morrus has repeatedly explained to the rest of you, addition is easier. With THACO, you are always adding. With BAB, you have to constantly subtract negative numbers. So NOT ONLY do you have to use subtraction (OH NOES!), you ALSO have to subtract negative numbers. I swear, if I ever have to subtract the negative of the proficiency again .... Stop bowing to the tyranny of math.

  • 12:26 AM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post What are your favourite single game mechanics?
D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about 5E. From what I have heard...perhaps apocryphally...MM got the idea for that from The One Ring. (Although it's worth pointing out that the mechanic doesn't actually have a name in TOR, it's just spelled out wherever it's used. E.g., "Roll the Feat die twice and take the better result.") But, yeah, I really like that mechanic, too. Although it's not just the mechanic itself that I like, it's the way it explicitly replaces summing up various positive and negative modifiers. But, um, I'm supposed to pick a mechanic I like, so I'll go with: The way that "Success, with Complications" in Dungeon World works.

  • 08:21 PM - aramis erak quoted Morrus in post I only run D&D when I need to establish a player base
Where did you hear/see that assertion, out of curiosity? He's directly quoting me from another thread. I don't recall if that thread is here or at RPGGeek. When one prefers to GM, it's easiest to get player trust by running systems familiar to them. One can then find out who is interested. I'd rather have a game of D&D going than no game at all; I'd rather play (insert list of over 100 other games) than D&D, and If stuck running D&D, my preferences in D&D are limited to Cyclopedia/BECMI/BX and 5E at this time. I'd quit gaming entirely if my only options were pre-4E, and 4E is just too much hassle to GM. Building a base of people who have seen that I can and do run fun games, and how I approach rules makes it easier to recruit for those other 100 games

His company website has been taken down. Is the KS still running?Yes it is. Other than that one comment this issue seems to have passed the Kickstarter by. I had an update this morning, which I thought might have been a clarification or apology or denial or, you know, something, but instead it was basically "what do you think about our elves?"
  • 08:31 AM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post I only run D&D when I need to establish a player base
Where did you hear/see that assertion, out of curiosity? From the "Why do you play games other than D&D" thread, I believe. And thinking about it, I'd probably be much happier going to play D&D with a strange group than I would most other systems because you really never know what you are going to get with a group, and D&D is at least some sort of baseline. D&D's new slogan: "At least some sort of baseline." Seriously though, that makes sense. If I'm not going to know the people playing, I might as well know the game.

Dude. Please stop telling me Iím going to die. Will it make it better if we tell you that you'll take your nemesis with you when you go? "Goguenar Gorecannon's Seventh Unkillable Fact: Dying happens to everyone, even stars. Even the stuff between the stars. But if you believe in yourself and achieve your goals, you can die so hard that no one will ever forget you, and thatís almost as good as not dying at all. Is that a death threat? ;) Heh. Actually, it's pretty sound advice! (At least in America! Seriously, so many people think they will never die, and so many people fail to understand both how easy a simple will is, and how obnoxious the intestate laws can be.)
  • 04:11 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post New Terminator Going to Flop? [spoilers]
It's pitched very much as a sequel rather than a reboot. There's time travel involved. The difference between sequel and reboot is negligible.
  • 02:39 PM - lowkey13 quoted Morrus in post New Terminator Going to Flop? [spoilers]
It's pitched very much as a sequel rather than a reboot. Well, just pointing out that- 1. We had Terminator and T2. 2. Then we had the sequel, T3. How'd that go? 3. Then we had the Cameron-approved sequel, Salvation. How'd that go? 4. Then we had a reboot, that wasn't a reboot, Genisys. How's that go? 5. So now we have a sequel to ... T2. But it's not a reboot. Even though (obviously) they have to re-cast the roles of some of the actors in that film, and Arnold is 28 years older than T2 and 35 years older than Terminator. Sure, we can quibble about the difference between a reboot, and a sequel, and rebooting sequel, and whatever, but the basic point remains- if the target market is 40-50, the movie is doomed. Sorry. Luckily, that won't be the target demographic, because no studio would greenlight that. I mean, there was Cocoon, but that was some time ago. Clint Eastwood still makes some stuff, but they aren't for the blockbuster market like a Terminator movie would be. See what I ...

  • 07:47 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post Why do you play games other than D&D?
If I tell a muggle that I'm getting together with my "GURPS group" or my "DFRPG group," it usually requires a longer explanation Was really hoping that "muggle" was a portmanteau of "muppet" and "fraggle." Still, it's a good one to know. So why do you play games other than D&D? What is it that your game of choice does that makes it the best fit for the stories and genres you're playing with? First, playing a game other than D&D tells players "this is going to be different from D&D!" If you don't establish that well, someone is going to be pissed that he can't play his usual Dragonborn Paladin. With an ogre-slaying knife. Besides that, my house-rule list probably just got too long at some point. Why play by the old rules when you've changed all of them? I like a game that offers flexibility - role-playability - to the GM and the players. D&D is more black-and-white. Which is great if you have an aspiring thespian in your group. Being able to tell her "nope, you fail," might give t...

He had his account set to approved followers only, so it's not like I could ever see it, but I guess he's decided he doesn't want to see my tweets either. Never tweeted the guy or mentioned him! Wild guess, but I bet he had some rationalization for this other than that you might undermine the shaky ground on which his convictions stood.
  • 04:36 PM - Jacob Lewis quoted Morrus in post Why do you play games other than D&D?
So why do you play games other than D&D? What is it that your game of choice does that makes it the best fit for the stories and genres you're playing with? Interesting choice of phrasing. It seems like the answer should be obvious: I play other games because they're not D&D. But, by the same token, I would also play D&D because it is D&D. And that itself is a testament to the greater significance and importance of D&D to the hobby in general. We're either playing D&D, or we're playing something else. Because you won't get many responses to "Why do you play games other than Call of Cthulhu?", or "Mutants & Masterminds", or "any other game besides D&D".
