Patrick Stewart sounds older than he does currently in real life, and Spiner has been de-aged. Interesting! Reports also say Riker is in it. I knew he directed some of it, but apparently he’s actually in it. I hope there isn’t too much focus on the Romulan stuff. With Nemesis, and the Abrahms Trek reboot, I’m kinda bored of what wasn’t a very interesting plot thread in the first place. I’m...

I really don't understand what your point is, and it seems to change with each post. My interest in the conversation (such that it was) has expired as it's gong nowhere interesting, but I'll reiterate that if you want to see original movies, there are tons of them every year, and they're awesome and available to you. If your requirement for them is that they have to be blockbusters, then I guess...

Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever.

What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there.

Who cares about "big"? What you want is a high gross-to-production ratio. If I gross $122 million on an investment of $9 million, I've gotten a 13x return on my investment! I could make 36 of these small movies for the cost of one Avengers: Endgame, and gross about $4.4 Billion overall. If my Endgame tanks, I lose it all. If half my small budget movies tank, I still walk away with a couple...

Consider - the archetype of "magical school" is kind of a Harry Potter thing. Traditionally, wizards have worked like tradesmen - with a Master-apprentice relationship. There is no need for a school. This does not mean you can't ban wizards - just that "there is no school" does not stand up to scrutiny as a justification.

I think that's the issue right there. "System" and "numinous" are at cross purposes. I have had RPG moments that have felt numinous, but they have typically had little to do with "system", and more to do with atmosphere and immersion.

Ergo, the game of 1e, in practice, was more lethal. You just said it had higher kill rates. Done. You effectively just said, "This analysis gives me result A. Therefore, I must do another analysis that gets me a different result." That's not solid reasoning. Games are not cleanly separable from their playstyles. Trying to level set outside of the playstyle introduces a bias -...

It is a basic, and calculable thing. That being said, I have to note that there are actually two forms of magic that are getting conflated: 1) The magic of myth and folklore 2) The day-to-day...

I think, if you ask "Which edition was most lethal?" that really asks - what percentage of characters did each edition actually kill? It has nothing to do with whether a 2e fighter could beat a 1e fighter, or otherwise comparing their stats to each other. It asks what power level characters were, *with respect to the challenges they were given*. Unfortunately, the real numbers are lost...

I did say it was in jest. But, if you want to be a bit more pedantic about it - not all games give the GM a whole lot of space to choose when/what they can veto. And not all GMs are experienced, and know when to veto. And if the GM thinks they always know all implications of things at the time they are decided, and make a good choice on what to veto every time, they are kidding themselves. ...

I think that while a system in and of itself cannot produce such authenticity, it can certainly get in the way of it. It can also likely encourage it - setting the players up in a good way to have such, to invite it. Bluebeard's Bride (from Magpie Games), and Ten Candles (from Calvalry Games) come to mind in that sense - games designed to enable players to "have all the feels" as the...

Not at all (he said, taking the rhetorical bait). Remember the wargame root. In a wargame, you don't have characters, you have *units*. You only care about the survival of a unit in terms of its tactical value in the wargame scenario - you expect units to die, and you just move on. The old rules are not far from that. As time goes on, the game evolves away from that, to having a different...

Broadly, that would depend upon what other parts of the fiction have already been determined. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

I am not sure that this is somehow more true of gnomes than it is of, say, elves, with all the sub-races that have been out there. And, heavens forfend you can't summarize *an entire race of people* in a neat little stereotype! The horror!

It matters to my play experience. It probably impacts the choices I make in play. So, by that measure, it makes a difference in the campaign. Also, as a GM, I take the player choices to be indicative of things they want to see. If you play a gnome, we're probably going to see a lot more gnome culture and social role in the game than if nobody chose to play a gnome. That probably means...

Modiphius has announced that the Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook for Star Trek Adventures will be out on July 25th. 11 alien species, new starships, and lots of information about the Federation and worlds of the quadrant, available from their web store very soon. “In the end, it comes down to throwing one pitch afteranother, and seeing what happens. With each new consequence, the game begins...

We did a skit about that in last week's podcast, with a player suggesting more and more outlandish races, starting with deep gnomes and tieflings, through aaracokra and minotaurs, to mind flayers and dragons, to daleks and Borg Queens, to, eventually, V'ger. The idea of somebody playing V'ger as a PC still cracks me up.

You also get into some interesting sticky wicket scenarios with that one. That means with a 2nd level spell a cleric can effectively "trap souls" for long periods of time. Which depending on your cosmology could be very problematic.

Both of you decided to continue a personal dispute despite the warning. Time for both of you to take a walk - find another thread where you're not going to engage in personal sniping. Don't post in this one any further. Despite how clear this case is, one or both of you will likely disagree and want to argue with me. Take it to PM, please, and leave the thread alone. Anyone else?

In the past year I wrapped up a PF campaign, but also played a 5E campaign and two FFG Legend of the Five Rings campaigns. So it's less "switching game systems" as "trying the hip new thing to see how we like it."

I see several signs of people getting snippy, personal, and being far more interested in being right than exploring ideas. Folks are looking dug in, defending positions rather than thinking about whether the other guy has a point. That's a good sign that the thread's about done. Keep it respectful, keep it constructive, or find another topic, folks.

The moment when you have to say, "To not understand and agree with me, you are either doing bad thing A, or bad thing B," is the moment you should step back, and consider that this means you must be flawless. Are you flawless? No? Then bad things on the other guy's part are *not* the only option. Maybe, just maybe, there's another basis for the misunderstanding. Until you are more...

abe ray your habit of starting a thread asking a question, and not even acknowledging (let a alone thanking) those who go out of their way to help you is a little rude. It’s been going on for some time. If somebody helps you out, please have the decency to thank them before asking them something for something else. Thanks! :)

(A question for those planning to play PF2; if you’re not, this isn’t really for you - don’t threadcrap, please). So you’re planning on playing PF2. While you are probably coming from PF1, is anybody coming from 5E? Obviously, it’s not a permanent thing; you can play more than one game, try out others, all that stuff. But I was curious whether there’s a demographic out here who feel PF2 is...

I'm trying out a concept. A half-elf who failed to become a blade singer. Ostracized from his community, he eventually became a solider and eventually a squad leader. So I'm playing a frontline fighter with a lot of skills, some inspirational benefits to his groups, and some magics to include in his swordplay. I'm going as a broad generalist, so 16 cha and 16 dex, with a 12 con. I've decided...

My group is facing a very powerful boss, and is looking for various ways to lower enemy saving throws. Currently we know of the following methods: 1) Heightened Spell metamagic 2) Bane 3) Bestow Curse Are there any other class ability, spells, magic items, etc that can lower a person's saving throw?

Morrus: I'm glad I'm getting results similar to others. guachi: 39/400 is still approx 10% chance to land a 20 on the d20. 5% normally and 1/400 with disadvantage. Yes sometimes the advantage/disadvantage is of small consequence or better said of little impact... But to almost double your chances of getting max on a random number? Larger impact. • 10:44 AM - Connorsrpg mentioned Morrus in post Does your group allow homebrew or 3PP material?
Like Morrus, the ability to write your own stuff and customise the game to your setting is a VERY big part of our games and has been for many years. I write and convert a LOT for any game I play. I love doing that as much as playing. We have never really fussed over 'balance'. In fact, have only really done so in a real studious manner since interacting on forums TBH. Used to write stuff, try it and adapt it. Now you put something out there and the number crunchers shout great ideas down. A pity really. There are also many very nice number crunchers that offer suggestions for improvements other than this is OP or whatever other acronym fits their thoughts. Play loose, incorporate ideas from everywhere and have fun :)

If they're universal exploits, they can be taken at any time. Given their nature, it might be worth a note indicating they can only be taken at character creation? Alternatively - maybe those would work well as attribute traits? Low AGI for the first two and low CHA for the last, perhaps? I definitely think there is design space for race-specific attribute traits. Morrus Yes, I think you're right about race-specific attribute traits. Now, to figure out appropriate adjectives. Maybe rudimental for overt hands, stick with digitigrade for stance, and bestial or animalistic for features? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk

  • 10:35 PM - Maxperson mentioned Morrus in post Wanting more content doesn't always equate to wanting tons of splat options so please stop.
I don't think he's wrong in viewing the WotC material as generally acceptable by default. My group tends to do that, too. I understand tha mindset entirely, and I do think that there is a level of validity to that. However, it's the dismissal of 3rd party material and fan created content that's i think is wrong, and the way those items are compared to the official ones. He is saying that he does not judge material based on its merit, but instead on its brand. That's not accurate. I do judge based on the merit of the material. That's why I didn't buy all WotC 3e releases, and did buy the rare third party release. I also had the time to go dig through the third party dross to find the gems. I no longer have the time that I had, nor are most of the third party releases in stores for me to leaf through even if I did. As a result, I have to wait for WotC to give me a general release book before I get any. @Morrus I really didn't mean to imply that there were third party professionals and apologize for that implication.

  • 07:49 PM - Umbran mentioned Morrus in post Do DM's feel that Sharpshooter & Great Weapon Master overpowered?
As far as I can tell, there are two levels of ignore. Basic members have the ability to ignore people, but they can still see your posts and reply to them (though you won't be able to see their post, since you're ignoring them). And then there's like a premium level where you can block people, which actually prevents them from seeing your posts in the first place. Or maybe basic members can actually block other basic members, but premium members can still see posts from basic members who are ignoring them. Or maybe there's only one level of ignoring someone, but there's a bug where sometimes it doesn't apply fully. I haven't seen the documentation for this anywhere. I can say quite plainly that there are no *intended* levels of ignore. We don't make you pay for that feature. It may be that some settings got screwed up when we had to step to the database backup. This is something for Morrus to know about, and discuss in the Meta forum, but let's not bog this thread down with it, okay.

Morrus I think it is different because my physical Players Handbook, character sheet and mechanical pencil cant access the internet, emails, bubble-smashing games, eBay auctions, etc. But I dont think it is about the tech, its about the player. I have one player who uses a tablet or laptop and he simply uses it as a quick way to look up his spells (just like a PHB). My friend's wife on the other hand, is constantly playing a game on her phone unless it is her turn at the table.

This could be due to one of several reasons: 1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. • 03:03 PM - Myzzrym quoted Morrus in post What do you think of this Kickstarter page?
Well, the books are already made, using the established EN5ider trade dress (and one of them was released in 2017!) It's the Kickstarter page itself I'm really after thoughts on, rather than the actual books. Ooops, my apologies. In that case it's fairly straightforward, I think it's pretty clear and the page displays what the book is about, so no complaints here!
  • 02:08 PM - Myzzrym quoted Morrus in post What do you think of this Kickstarter page?
No, we don't copy WotC's trade dress. I understand about straight up copying, and that's not what I mean. I prefer when the style remains relatively close to the other books I already own (or marries well together), so there is a certain continuity. Here I really feel like it's completely different and it clashes with the existing official material.
  • 08:56 AM - Caliburn101 quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
They're grown adults and extremely competent business people. Yes - thinking they are being knee-jerk is foolish. You don't build a successful business without a good dose of business acumen and common sense. However - brands have been known (through in some cases an inability to evolve their business model) to die on their feet by doggedly sticking to 'what worked back in the day'. In fact it is a common enough reason for falling over in business. Blockbuster might still exist if they had seized upon the new paradigm and embraced downloads and streaming. 5th Edition and it's owners have created a system which allows new people in by being penetrable and inclusive, and have nevertheless kept the spirit of D&D robust enough to reconcile many previous version champion groups. That's gold right there, and the reason (alas...) that it eclipses all other systems. Roleplay used to be a lot smaller and system varied - now it has grown into being more inclusive to people but far less s...
  • 12:25 AM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 2
So are Jon and Dany headed for conflict? She can be quite murdery about people who challenge her right to rule the world, and he’s now a potential threat to that. I’ve always thought she’s got a bit of Cersei in her. And possibly also a little of her insane father as well. I think there is going to be some trouble. Based on her reaction, her first thought was that Jon poses a threat to her, rather than that she's been sleeping with her nephew after all. Are we assuming the white walkers are not the end game threat, BT just the first half of the season? (Three eps... that won’t be wrapped up next week, surely? Alhugh we know one episode is the biggest battle ever filmed, which I’m guessing is next week). No, it would seem they're not the end game. My guess would be that the survivors from the battle against the white walkers will march on King's Landing to face Cersei, Euron, and the Golden Company. After all, we've yet to see that bit from Bran's vision of a dragon's shadow on King's L...

  • 08:59 PM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Star Trek Discovery not getting any better I fear.
Just popped in after a few months ... man, this thread. A bunch of people hatewatching a TV show they don't like and making sure everybody knows it. It's the most depressing thing I ever saw. God, why flagellate yourselves like this? For me there are a couple different reasons. One, is that I write a lot of stuff for a Star Trek Adventures fansite (https://continuingmissionsta.com/) and keeping up with Star Trek is part of that voluntary "job", in case I want to stat out new ships or races or technology. Second, I have a compulsive need to "finish" things. I can't start TV series halfway through, and once I've started I need to finish seasons. I can count the number of series I've walked away from and not seen through to cancellation or completion on one hand. Not finishing the season nags at my brain as something undone, like having left the stove on. The final is that I identify as a "Star Trek Fan". I've been a Star Trek Fan since I was eight years old. I've been a Star Trek ...

That’s a pretty low bar for predictions. Everybody shares your prediction. Nobody thinks 6E is anywhere close. I'm thinking most editions are ten years or so...so 2024.

I'm sure the sheer amount of photography of that building over the last century means no detail will be left undocumented. Copying it will be easy, as long as they can spend the money. That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions. I've heard it's a little more complicated than the Catholic church owns it. I'm not positive, but from what I've heard... The French Government owns it but allows Catholic Services. They share cooperation between the two in maintaining it. It is very expensive to maintain and thus most of the money to maintain it is via donations rather than simply being from French Taxpayers. Thus, any new constructions and such are normally from donation money and such.

Someone is really salty that people don't ignore all the flaws in his beloved show... By the way, you still haven't explained "What it (the criticism) is really about...." I think we know what it's really about.

Who? Shorelock Holmes! You know, he had a famous brother named Sherlock that everyone always woos over...but poor Shorelock is always forgotten. Shorelock was the beach dude who was an awesome surfer. If there was a wave, he'd surf it. Unfortunately, he couldn't get further away than 400 meters before he'd have too much temptation and have to catch a big one. He always was stuck somewhere close to the shore. On waves, he'd obviously surf back to shore...and when he wanted to go inland, just missed the surf far too much. He is famous for inventing the quotes... Dude Far Out Spaced Curl And other such famous things. He'd probably be better known along with his side kick Watch Her, but that Sherlock just seemed to get all the media attention back in the day instead of Shorelock.

Sure. Any location - whether big like Twitter or small like here - is just a potential sparking point for a bigger effect. Usually it isn’t, but sometimes something happens, and careers end and brands get damaged. One guy at a company staying quiet for a bit is prudent.l, lest it escalate (which it probably wouldn’t, but it’s not a risk worth taking). I agree. It's what I'd advise him to do - stay quiet.

Just popped in after a few months ... man, this thread. A bunch of people hatewatching a TV show they don't like and making sure everybody knows it. It's the most depressing thing I ever saw. God, why flagellate yourselves like this?A few months? You posted in this thread five days ago. I personally have no stakes in this thread - I don't watch the show, mostly because I refuse to pay a TV network for "special content" they refuse to air on their regular network (it seems like a bad precedent to set) - but it seems like allowing those who want to vent about this show here in this thread at least keeps it localized. Didn't you build a "positive comments only" thread about the show, specifically to keep the complaints here and not there? So why not let them vent here, where you should be able to safely ignore them? Johnathan

God, why flagellate yourselves like this? Wasn't the whole point of the (+) and (-) thread designations to specifically stop posts like this? Nice personal attack on everyone participating. :-/
