So I donít know your parties level but Iíll assume pretty high stats. 1) phase 1 - complete cake walk. The lich has low ac and hp for that level, and no real defensive spells. He might last a round. 2) phase 2 - now we are talking. The engine gives him much needed durability. I think the d wave is overkill, what i would do instead is an antimagic wave that dispels the partyís buff. That...

I had a long talk with my group about the concerns I had with counterspell, even noting to my players that ďI will knock out your spells with this if we Lee it inĒ. They have decided to keep it. I will say the range does factor in if you are smart about it, and Iíve had bad guys pull back out of counterspell range to use effects. So far itís working, there are times when I still wonder if I...

Ah, I've figured it out! The way your proclamation that "Hollywood doesn't really do new movies" works in your head is that Hollywood = Disney's 4-5 blockbusters each year, and all of the other 500 movies each year are not by Disney and therefore aren't Hollywood. Ergo, Hollywood doesn't do new movies any more. The No True Scotsman fallacy needs to be renamed, because, man, you not only...

Research and gather opinions before *running* my homebrew adventures? That would be more work than my content is worth, to be honest. Plus, my homebrew is designed for the half-dozen or so people at my table. Unless I am going to a person specifically chosen to match my players' preferences, outside opinions are, statistically, apt to be misleading. Publishing is another matter...

Well, you say more than one thing - if you want more focus in your answers, keep your presentation more focused :) I think giving the Borg a face was inevitable. If you don't give them a face, they are, as I already noted, a force of nature. Characters don't interact *personally* with nature. So, dramatically speaking, the force of nature only allows you to play with the interactions you...

As if anyone who ever made a movie wasn't hoping that it would be massively popular and financially successful? Again - if you are trying to make money on the box office alone, "break $100 million" isn't actually the issue. The ratio of return to investment is the issue. Let us look at the most profitable movies of all time, shall we? ...

Truly implacable threats aren't interesting. If they are truly implacable, they kill your protagonists and win and the story ends An antagonist isn't interesting if you cannot understand it. A human must be able to grasp the antagonist's motivations and plans, or the antagonist is a force of nature - and the antagonist in a natural disaster film isn't the interesting part. Once you can...

Really? You know that Hollywood puts out something like 500 to 600 movies every year? (cite: statista.com) How are they creatively bankrupt when they are making hundreds of movies that aren't sequels and such? If we take the statement as largely true, the issue wasn't how well the show was doing, but production schedule. They were looking at not having new episodes until late 2020 - a year and more from now, which is a hard sell for Fox.

Yes. But "blockbuster" isn't relevant. You don't have to bust the block. You just have to outperform your production costs. Which means, you need to make *gasp* a good movie! This is an assertion without support. Show the logic - what can you tell us about how movies are funded? How does that lead to investors wanting to go with established franchises? Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever.

What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there.

Who cares about "big"? What you want is a high gross-to-production ratio. If I gross $122 million on an investment of $9 million, I've gotten a 13x return on my investment! I could make 36 of these small movies for the cost of one Avengers: Endgame, and gross about $4.4 Billion overall. If my Endgame tanks, I lose it all. If half my small budget movies tank, I still walk away with a couple...

Consider - the archetype of "magical school" is kind of a Harry Potter thing. Traditionally, wizards have worked like tradesmen - with a Master-apprentice relationship. There is no need for a school. This does not mean you can't ban wizards - just that "there is no school" does not stand up to scrutiny as a justification.

Ergo, the game of 1e, in practice, was more lethal. You just said it had higher kill rates. Done. You effectively just said, "This analysis gives me result A. Therefore, I must do another analysis that gets me a different result." That's not solid reasoning. Games are not cleanly separable from their playstyles. Trying to level set outside of the playstyle introduces a bias -...

I think, if you ask "Which edition was most lethal?" that really asks - what percentage of characters did each edition actually kill? It has nothing to do with whether a 2e fighter could beat a 1e fighter, or otherwise comparing their stats to each other. It asks what power level characters were, *with respect to the challenges they were given*. Unfortunately, the real numbers are lost...

And not all GMs are experienced, and know when to veto. And if the GM thinks they always know all implications of things at the time they are decided, and make a good choice on what to veto every time, they are kidding themselves. ...

It can also likely encourage it - setting the players up in a good way to have such, to invite it. Not at all (he said, taking the rhetorical bait). Remember the wargame root. In a wargame, you don't have characters, you have *units*. You only care about the survival of a unit in terms of its tactical value in the wargame scenario - you expect units to die, and you just move on. The old rules are not far from that. As time goes on, the game evolves away from that, to having a different...

Because they are not omniscient, and what they ask for may not actually be what they wanted, needed, or could best use. There is a demonstrable...

How does a pre-industrial society hang together with super-powerful individuals and groups wandering the land at will, especially as these people rocket up in personal power in just a few years?

I know review copies have been sent out to various people (ours went to Ben, our Pathfinder columnist) but the reviews are embargoed until Aug 1st. And, of course, thereís the 3PPs, but theyíre not even allowed to tell you who they are until then! :)

Well the actual book comes out in 2 weeks; the playtest book is a year out of date. Where did you get it from? Unless youíre a collector, youíre better off waiting for the final rules on Aug 1st.

The last game I ran, I did have the common problem - the rogue, with better Initiative, similar AC, and high damage from sneak attack, left the party paladin feeling a tad... unimportant in combat. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Yeah, but I think you're treating the discussion as if folks are choosing their wordign along strict logical lines, when that behavior is not terribly common. "Any DM (OSR or not)..." may not be strictly true. Though, it may be - they may *see* the logic, but reject it. But whatever the case, in spending your time refuting the strict statement, you miss the actual point that perhaps lots...

Well, it isn't like the pantheon and cultural structure are cleanly separable. The gods support particular social structures. And, in our fantasy worlds, the gods have a say in things - if a god gives spell power to elvish worshippers/clerics, and does not give power to non-elves, that's going to reinforce religion being a racial characteristic. Um... we have the phrase lingua franca...

What part of "particularly on a success" didn't connect for you? Your response to that is to note that the failure case is always infinite, so there's no narrowing at all? Really?

Or, the also not-uncommon "start at 3rd level". Note that "a half-dozen people before you suggested X" does not actually mean that those half-dozen are representative. Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

Occasionally a game mechanic jumps out at me, and makes me think "wow!" -- it's not always brand new, and sometimes it builds on something else, or sometimes it's just new to me, but I like it when a simple mechanic catches my eye. Here's a couple of my favourites: D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about...

With respect, this doesn't tell us anything until you also do a measure of how fast PCs are expected to *lose* hit points. If AD&D monsters generally did less damage, or an AD&D party dealt with far fewer monsters in a day, yes, it could be moot.

It matters to my play experience. It probably impacts the choices I make in play. So, by that measure, it makes a difference in the campaign. Also, as a GM, I take the player choices to be indicative of things they want to see. If you play a gnome, we're probably going to see a lot more gnome culture and social role in the game than if nobody chose to play a gnome. That probably means...

Honestly, Iíd recommend just not worrying about it. Unless tracking ammo is actually pleasurable for you, handwaving it with an abstract system is fine. If you want to make exceptions for single shot weapons, I guess thatís fine - I donít think I would bother myself. I have no interest in tracking ammunition, but I'm pretty sure one of my players would be upset that I made his sniper rifle "so much more expensive" lol...
  • 11:36 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post The Actual Table of Contents for Xanathar's Guide to Everything
The definition of a working strategy is ďParmandur has bought every book so farĒ? I mean, I havenít. I havenít seen ToA; last one I bought was CoS. Does that mean itís not working? Or is it only when you buy them? Off-topic, but you should get it. CoS is my favorite so far, but ToA is second (especially if you get some of the 3rd party content off of DM's guild). I don't even know which one is in distant third place. Maybe OotA. Only the price point is too high for xgte. 50 dollars are too much for a 175 pages book. Yeah, that complaint I will agree with. Whether or not you're happy with the content, the price is too high. I suppose that just makes it hurt all the more if you're not happy with the content.
  • 10:55 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post The Actual Table of Contents for Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Who cares? Weíre some people having a conversation and expressing our opinions to each other, and we are a 100% accurate sample of the people having this conversation. One of the folks engaged in the conversation was projecting his personal preferences into abstract statements of what is "useful" or "wasting money" in some Kantian Moral Imperative sense that objectively applies everywhere and for everyone. That claim is...bold.
  • 10:54 PM - Kurotowa quoted Morrus in post The Actual Table of Contents for Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Who cares? Weíre some people having a conversation and expressing our opinions to each other, and we are a 100% accurate sample of the people having this conversation. I'm offering it as a refutation of the claim that name tables are useless to everyone. People here can freely say those tables are useless to them, but it's inaccurate to say they're so useless as to be unworthy of inclusion in the book.
  • 10:45 PM - gyor quoted Morrus in post The Actual Table of Contents for Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Thatís not why that content is there. Thatís the sort of thing first-time self publishing amateurs do, not professional experienced publishing companies. What about experienced publishing companies more interested in selling movie and video game rights then actually publishing, so they cut staff and budgets to the publishing side, make it coast on fumes. Given that they cut out their novel publishing, publish one none AP a year, and two APs per year, can you really call them a professional publishing company anymore? It's a she'll company that hold valuable movie rights, that all it is and XGTE is just what it had to do to keep up appearances. 17 pages of names says it all. Someone on another forum called it Xanather's Guide to Names and Rehash, tongue in cheek obviously, but it's I bad sign that there is truth in that. I don't blame Mearls and Crawford they are trying to make lemon aid in a bad unfair situation, I blame the suits who make bad choices.
  • 10:28 PM - Parmandur quoted Morrus in post The Actual Table of Contents for Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Thatís not why that content is there. Thatís the sort of thing first-time sled publishing amateurs do, not professional experienced publishing companies. I'm sure the main reason is demand, but if they had more subclasses ready for primetime, that Appendix would probably be on the block to be shortened.
  • 06:37 PM - raspberryfh quoted Morrus in post AP Rounds in NEW
Quite a while back. Offhand I canít recall which article it was in, though! Found it. Game modes. Interesting concept. Maybe make specialty ammo cost increased by some multiplier (either 2 or 5). I worry that it breaks down with HQ or single-shot weapons though. Bullets shouldn't necessarily be more expensive just because the gun is better engineered. And someone firing a high-powered sniper rifle isn't going to run through their ammo in uncertain bursts. How would you recommend addressing those cases?
  • 05:40 PM - raspberryfh quoted Morrus in post AP Rounds in NEW
It's in one of the EONS articles, but basically rather than tracking them individually, you have a countdown pool to see when you run out, and you can spend credits on more dice in that pool (each dice costing more than the last). You roll it at the end of each combat. It abstracts buying, using, wasting, losing, etc. ammo. You can still do it the old way (more expensive than currently though) too. But the abstract way I find is much more fun, and tends to be tracked more accurately by players. I'm an EONS supporter, but I don't remember seeing this. Is it already posted or to-be-released?
  • 04:01 PM - raspberryfh quoted Morrus in post AP Rounds in NEW
I wouldn't worry about the cost of the rounds. That's changed in v1.2 anyway, in favour of a more abstract system. Any details on that? :)
  • 02:31 PM - Xaelvaen quoted Morrus in post WOIN: Resources to help learn Magic in O.LD.
Ah, cool. Just be aware that the WRRD is very bare-bones; it references most of the rules, but it doesn't really explain them (for example, the magic system is one page on the WRRD and about 60 pages in the actual book!) Nice core mechanic - using d6s and the cap seems to control the swing a bit I imagine. You've certainly piqued my interest - thank you for the quick replies!
  • 02:18 PM - Xaelvaen quoted Morrus in post WOIN: Resources to help learn Magic in O.LD.
Thereís a sidebar in the book which explains the order of operations (and itís explained in the rules FAQ too). Short answer: exploits apply after the dice capping. Dice capping applies only to the initial dice pool. Aha - never even noticed the FAQ, was just looking at the reference document to see if the system forms to my playstyle (to determine if I want to get N.E.W. -and- the Xenomorphs setting, or just the setting and convert to my system of choice). So far, I'm digging the sound of it, so the nifty special cover of N.E.W. is looking appealing =)
  • 01:55 PM - Eltab quoted Morrus in post Odd things about superheroes...
it's his superpower. Gah. How unimaginative and banal. Were I in a comic book world, I suppose I would become an 'institutional villain' (not a super-villain). I'd keep inviting superheroes over to my medical clinic for 'just a few tests'. You know - CAT scan, MRI, thermal imaging, electron microscope, biopsy, poke them with needles, that sort of thing. If somebody gets prickly about it, I could use my connections and 'rat him out' to the EPA (anybody who shoots energy blasts), FAA (anybody who flies), Civil Rights (any mind-reader) or some other regulatory agency that will hassle him for the next 20 issues - unless he agrees to take the tests I offered in the first place.

  • 02:57 AM - daniiren quoted Morrus in post AP Rounds in NEW
What was the SOAK penetration that you used when you reduced the damage penalty to 1d6? Did you ignore 7 SOAK or 10? 10. Could you try running it with half damage and half soak? And conversely, for hollow point, double soak and double damage? I donít expect those values to be useable, but it will give a good sense of direction. I present the results from the GURPS idea, and also a hybrid where AP gives half SOAK and -1d6 damage (opposite for HP ammo). Not gonna lie, I like how this hybrid setup looks. Battlesuits are vulnerable to AP and almost immune to HP, and kevlar is about the same for both. I think I'm going to spend some time making this code usable by someone else, and I'll post it to allow others to play around with it.

  • 05:03 AM - dekrass quoted Morrus in post [For bigtino] Thread about heavy armor
I think that particular thing is a perfect opportunity to bing back the armor skilll reducing defence penalties. The defence penalty is reduced by -1 for each die in the armor skill (that means you don't really need a light armor skill, but I think that works thematically -- wearing a synthetic weave shouldn't require skill; wearing powered combat armor should). That makes sense. It means that there's no reason to have more than 3 ranks in medium armor, though. I think consolidating medium and heavy into just one armor skill would work. It remains relevant for 10 ranks that way, and you get better at wearing heavier armor as you gain ranks. Plus you can work up to the heavier armors in skill much as you do in money.

Well itís more that exacting people who will only play one specific game, and only when that game is configured in one specific way, are not people Iíve ever had the pleasure of encountering. Generally people enjoy gaming in many forms. For me, it depends on context. If I'm joining or starting a game with friends because we're looking to spend time together and have fun, the parameters of the game are almost incidental. As a player I'll happily play whatever system the groups wants, with whatever options and restrictions. (As a DM I'm slightly more selective, since I want to be confident that my style of DMing can work well with the selected options.) The main draw is the social aspect, and the game itself is secondary. By contrast, if I'm considering joining a game with people I've never (or only recently) met, the main draw is the game itself. It's thus more important to me to make sure it's a game whose parameters and style I'm going to find enjoyable during the time it takes to buil...

It's an idiom. http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/take+no+prisoners A phrase with more than one meaning. :) I figured that was what the writer was going for. I was trying for the tone of a somewhat light of heart chiding, in my mind it was an instructor talking to some pre-cadet wannabes, but I guess I failed on that skill roll. Also, it was intended to be a reminder or heads up to those unfortunate enough to have only had those two awful movies as their only experience with Judge Dredd that he's not some standard hollywood shoot everyone type with a badge. That was all part of the same attempt at writing. Oh well. As to the mad bomber sky surfer, I'm pretty sure they did one of those episodes back in the mid to late 80s. The dumping Umpty Candy dust on people though, that hasn't been done yet as far as I know. A whole scenario could be built around that. Sure some crazy might do it for kicks, but what if it's part of a bigger plot, and the crowd dusting skysurfer didn't even know w...

One other design space might be to play around wth the crit mechanic. Hollow point, for example, maybe does severe crits rather than regular crits. It's harder to stop the bleeding. What is it GURPS does? Not that I want to copy another system -- but HP doubles armor and does extra damage, while AP halves both armor and damage, IIRC. I've never played GURPS but one of my players had and it was the basis for the rules we came up with, adapted to more of a d6 system. I do kind of like the idea of HP rounds causing more deadly crits. I think balancing it might be tricky, but something like "-1d6 attack, roll 2 crit effects on a critical hit" might be okay. That could even just be another ammo type, leaving HP rounds as a damage-boosting ammunition.

My current thought is leaning somewhere along the lines of simplifying it a bit (a point bas d reduction I find fiddly at the table). Numbers notwithstanding, something like: AP - ignores SOAK if itís 10 or less. Does -1d6 damage. HP - +1d6 damage if the target has no armour SOAK. All the different parts of that table were just showing my work. How I arrived at the particular balance that I did. It is not intended as a reference for use during gameplay. AP rounds simply provide the bonus of ignoring 10 SOAK by paying 2d6 damage dice. Respectfully, I would suggest your adjustments are less balanced than the current state of the game. 1) If you ignore up to 10 SOAK at the cost of only 1d6 damage, then you are effectively gaining (up to) +10dmg -3.5dmg = +6.5dmg. This is a buff on current AP rounds, which will never give you more than +5 damage. For the new rule, the break-even point would be when SOAK = 3.5; below that point it is better to use regular ammo. So I would argue that this i...

I've never met players that fussy. Most are just cool with playing D&D. In fact, most payers I know are just cool to be playing anything. Keep 'em desperate, eh?
