The statistical point still holds - running things for one table is about matching the desires of maybe a half-dozen specific people, whether I know them or not. The chances that an outside person I pick will match their preferences, specifically, is low.

Something else to consider. You gave the lich plane shift. Do you intend to use it? You have this planned as the final fight, but if he's got plane shift, he should try to use it to escape, unless you have a good plot reason that he wouldn't do that.

The minions help out a bit I agree. Especially that life drain, that is a scary power to start the party with, as that will effect the party for the rest of the fight (I approve!). On the howl, the problem here is....dropping the party to 0 hp doesn't really do anything mechanics wise. The chance of this actually causing a player death is almost non-existant. What you could do is add an...

So I don’t know your parties level but I’ll assume pretty high stats. 1) phase 1 - complete cake walk. The lich has low ac and hp for that level, and no real defensive spells. He might last a round. 2) phase 2 - now we are talking. The engine gives him much needed durability. I think the d wave is overkill, what i would do instead is an antimagic wave that dispels the party’s buff. That...

I had a long talk with my group about the concerns I had with counterspell, even noting to my players that “I will knock out your spells with this if we Lee it in”. They have decided to keep it. I will say the range does factor in if you are smart about it, and I’ve had bad guys pull back out of counterspell range to use effects. So far it’s working, there are times when I still wonder if I...

Ah, I've figured it out! The way your proclamation that "Hollywood doesn't really do new movies" works in your head is that Hollywood = Disney's 4-5 blockbusters each year, and all of the other 500 movies each year are not by Disney and therefore aren't Hollywood. Ergo, Hollywood doesn't do new movies any more. The No True Scotsman fallacy needs to be renamed, because, man, you not only...

Research and gather opinions before *running* my homebrew adventures? That would be more work than my content is worth, to be honest. Plus, my homebrew is designed for the half-dozen or so people at my table. Unless I am going to a person specifically chosen to match my players' preferences, outside opinions are, statistically, apt to be misleading. Publishing is another matter...

Well, you say more than one thing - if you want more focus in your answers, keep your presentation more focused :) I think giving the Borg a face was inevitable. If you don't give them a face, they are, as I already noted, a force of nature. Characters don't interact *personally* with nature. So, dramatically speaking, the force of nature only allows you to play with the interactions you...

As if anyone who ever made a movie wasn't hoping that it would be massively popular and financially successful? Again - if you are trying to make money on the box office alone, "break $100 million" isn't actually the issue. The ratio of return to investment is the issue. Let us look at the most profitable movies of all time, shall we? ...

Yes. But "blockbuster" isn't relevant. You don't have to bust the block. You just have to outperform your production costs. Which means, you need to make *gasp* a good movie! This is an assertion without support. Show the logic - what can you tell us about how movies are funded? How does that lead to investors wanting to go with established franchises? "The way movies are...

Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever.

What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there.

Who cares about "big"? What you want is a high gross-to-production ratio. If I gross $122 million on an investment of $9 million, I've gotten a 13x return on my investment! I could make 36 of these small movies for the cost of one Avengers: Endgame, and gross about $4.4 Billion overall. If my Endgame tanks, I lose it all. If half my small budget movies tank, I still walk away with a couple...

Consider - the archetype of "magical school" is kind of a Harry Potter thing. Traditionally, wizards have worked like tradesmen - with a Master-apprentice relationship. There is no need for a school. This does not mean you can't ban wizards - just that "there is no school" does not stand up to scrutiny as a justification.

Ergo, the game of 1e, in practice, was more lethal. You just said it had higher kill rates. Done. You effectively just said, "This analysis gives me result A. Therefore, I must do another analysis that gets me a different result." That's not solid reasoning. Games are not cleanly separable from their playstyles. It has nothing to do with whether a 2e fighter could beat a 1e fighter, or otherwise comparing their stats to each other. It can also likely encourage it - setting the players up in a good way to have such, to invite it. Not at all (he said, taking the rhetorical bait). Remember the wargame root. In a wargame, you don't have characters, you have *units*. You only care about the survival of a unit in terms of its tactical value in the wargame scenario - you expect units to die, and you just move on. The old rules are not far from that. As time goes on, the game evolves away from that, to having a different...

I strongly recommend you re-read The Rules. Specifically, the section about keeping things civil. Ridiculing people is a good way to get yourself removed from a conversation. Use of profanity, also, is a good way to get yourself removed from the discussion. In general, we expect you to treat people with a modicum of respect, even if you disagree with them. If you aren't up for that,...

There was a trade language at the time that was based in Italian (mostly northern dialects) with a whole lot of loan words from other languages. This pidgin, sometimes otherwise called "Mediterranean Lingua Franca" or Sabir, was what they were referring to, rather than Latin.

I think 3e may be the most deadly edition. I mean, in terms of, say, if it fell on you from out of a tree, the sheer mass of the published materials would crush you. 2e had a lot too, but much of it was softcover, which hurts less.

I say, slightly in jest, "I search the Duke's desk for a huge ancient red dragon...." Less in jest, I ask - what are we more interested in seeing - the players getting exactly what they ask for, or the players getting what they overall want? Because they are not omniscient, and what they ask for may not actually be what they wanted, needed, or could best use. There is a demonstrable...

How does a pre-industrial society hang together with super-powerful individuals and groups wandering the land at will, especially as these people rocket up in personal power in just a few years?

Neither. But we’ll be moving into the new platform in the next week or two with luck, so it won’t matter.

I know review copies have been sent out to various people (ours went to Ben, our Pathfinder columnist) but the reviews are embargoed until Aug 1st. And, of course, there’s the 3PPs, but they’re not even allowed to tell you who they are until then! :)

Well the actual book comes out in 2 weeks; the playtest book is a year out of date. Where did you get it from? Unless you’re a collector, you’re better off waiting for the final rules on Aug 1st.

The last game I ran, I did have the common problem - the rogue, with better Initiative, similar AC, and high damage from sneak attack, left the party paladin feeling a tad... unimportant in combat. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Yeah, but I think you're treating the discussion as if folks are choosing their wordign along strict logical lines, when that behavior is not terribly common. "Any DM (OSR or not)..." may not be strictly true. Though, it may be - they may *see* the logic, but reject it. But whatever the case, in spending your time refuting the strict statement, you miss the actual point that perhaps lots...

Well, it isn't like the pantheon and cultural structure are cleanly separable. The gods support particular social structures. And, in our fantasy worlds, the gods have a say in things - if a god gives spell power to elvish worshippers/clerics, and does not give power to non-elves, that's going to reinforce religion being a racial characteristic. Um... we have the phrase lingua franca...

What part of "particularly on a success" didn't connect for you? Your response to that is to note that the failure case is always infinite, so there's no narrowing at all? Really?

Or, the also not-uncommon "start at 3rd level". Note that "a half-dozen people before you suggested X" does not actually mean that those half-dozen are representative. Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

Occasionally a game mechanic jumps out at me, and makes me think "wow!" -- it's not always brand new, and sometimes it builds on something else, or sometimes it's just new to me, but I like it when a simple mechanic catches my eye. Here's a couple of my favourites: D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about...

With respect, this doesn't tell us anything until you also do a measure of how fast PCs are expected to *lose* hit points. If AD&D monsters generally did less damage, or an AD&D party dealt with far fewer monsters in a day, yes, it could be moot.

  • 06:47 PM - akr71 quoted Morrus in post Rotating DMs?
I'm now thinking about a DM in the centre of a doughnut shaped table, slowly rotating while running the game. Me too, which made me concerned. I occasionally suffer from vertigo and generally don't deal very will with dizziness. More seriously, my game group has a rotating DM chair - sort of. It is mostly me, but another of our players has DM'd for a few sessions and likely will again in the near future. My wife has also DM'd a one-shot for this group, and would like to do something a little longer next time. Planning and communication. The outgoing and incoming DM need to share a bit of info on the end point and start point so that the flow doesn't seem too disjointed. If it is a casual group and you just want to hand-wave it, then that works too. We've had a couple casual discussions about Dungeon of the Mad Mage since each level of the dungeon is supposed to be fairly self contained. It gives us a city as a base of operations and lots of dungeon to play with. The honor sys...
  • 05:43 PM - CydKnight quoted Morrus in post Why 5E may be the last edition of D&D
Well, nothing in the history of the world has ever lasted forever. I suspect this edition will last longer than any previous ones, but 6E will one day be a big thing. Maybe the biggest thing! At the risk of being overly contrarian for contrarian's sake, I would amend this statement to "nothing in the history of the universe has ever lasted forever". Also, the inevitable end of 5E doesn't necessarily mean there will be a "6E" or any other new edition. It may mean the end of D&D (gasp!).

  • 07:10 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post Why 5E may be the last edition of D&D
Well, nothing in the history of the world has ever lasted forever. I suspect this edition will last longer than any previous ones, but 6E will one day be a big thing. Maybe the biggest thing! I doubt it. I think 6e will be a relatively small thing, more in line with something like The One Ring 2nd Edition. The same game, cleaned up, some lessons learned, minor changes, math changed where they learned too late that they'd biffed an equation, etc. I doubt that even what subclasses are in the PHB will be changed much. I'd expect stuff like Four Elements Monk getting a rebalance, maybe Ranger, at most, would get a real overhaul. That's the most drastic change I'd expect to see. You'll be able to play a 5e Fey Warlock in a 6e game. It will probably come in a gorgeous boxed set, though. I'd love a book for 5e like 4e's Rules Compendium, and I wouldn't be surprised if such a thing came out with "6e". its just been 4 years. I think they will start thinking seriously about 6e in the next coupl...

I like that idea, but I don't think that phrasing is easy to parse. I wonder if it's better just to put it in your own words? Maybe something like: MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $65 for two hardcover core rulebooks Perfect! David, Barantor, thank you for suggesting this. • 04:22 PM - WaterRabbit quoted Morrus in post Flanking - Do you use it, and if so how?
I agree with those that feel that advantage is too big a bonus and too easy to get while flanking. It creates a weird dynamic where the DM is left trying to figure out how to ensure everybody doesn't always have advantage on all attacks. I just don't understand this. It literally has never come up in over a year of playing with this rule. We started as a group with it and as the DM I have never had to try and figure this out. It just isn't an issue. I think most people forget that to flank using this rule the flankers have to be exactly opposite from each other. That means one of those characters is going to be more exposed to an enemy with the commensurate increase in risk. As the DM, there are much more difficult problems than this. Making sure that you don't over coordinate the opposition forces to an unfair advantage against the party. As the DM you have perfect knowledge of where every combatant is located which means it is very easy to out maneuver the party if you aren't...

  • 10:03 AM - delericho quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Even the kids who liked the prequels don't rank them as classics in the way we did the originals. When they're our age, they won't be reminiscing about the Star Wars prequels with rose-covered glasses in the way we do the OT. They'll be reminiscing about something, but it won't be the Star Wars prequels. Those three films never had that cultural zeitgeist. My guess for that "something else" would be Harry Potter - the first film in that series hit in 2001, between TPM and AotC. Of course, JKR is now running into trouble with her own set of prequels. Maybe in twenty years Disney will buy that IP, too?
  • 05:02 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Literally not what I said. Read it again, please. at The author or the first link ranks Revenge of the Sith as their favourite, I do think that in 20 years the 25yo who were introduced to Star Wars via the prequels might view them with the same nostalgia. And right now they might well enjoy those films like I enjoyed A New Hope prior to the prequels. Because ANH isn't that good. Not on paper. It has terrible dialogue, poor pacing, flat characters, and is tropey as :):):):). It uses plots from radio and film serials that were already three decades old that point. It's good largely because or nostalgia. And you can see how well Star Wars does in places with out that nostalgia by looking at China, where it is crushed at the box office.

I look fondly towards stuff like Friends, Seinfield, Sky Dancers, the Dreamstone, and the like. Granted, I'm not that fond of the prequels, but being that fond of Star Wars after the 80's is not really feasible. The OT was groundbreaking and highly influential, but that is the problem, everything made after the OT is heavily influenced by it, where once it was a fresh new thing, it barely stands apart by now. By the time the original trilogy was re-released in the mid nineties, I had been bombarded by countless parodies, shot outs and homages of it to really care. -And lets not go into the empire strikes...

Fans of the prequels very much do exist: https://www.digitaltrends.com/features/star-wars-youre-all-crazy/ https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/4qhrq7/i_like_the_prequels_more_than_the_original/ https://metro.co.uk/2017/05/18/why-the-star-wars-prequels-are-much-better-than-everyone-thinks-6605636/ https://www.thedailybeast.com/actually-the-star-wars-prequels-dont-suck https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2015/12/02/star-wars-prequel-trilogy-defense/76628934/ https://screenrant.com/star-wars-prequel-trilogy-good-popular-underrated/

No spoilers for the Elseworlds crossover please. This isn’t a spoiler thread. It doesn’t show here for a couple of weeks. You can start a new thread for that. :) Got it, el jefe. I didn't think I gave anything away in my post. I'll keep it in mind for the future.
  • 09:44 PM - Hussar quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
That does not contradict anything I said. What a weirdly aggressive thing to say. Huh? You just got through telling me that the universe is infinite. That link directly contradicts that. I'm confused.

Presumably then they were that when she arrived? Her actions didn’t have anything to do with it? Her actions in the season premiere put Tim Shaw into the position of being able to kill planets, and provided him the motivation to do so.

The five planets were saved and returned home. That was that while wiring the TARDIS into the telepathic aliens thing. The planets were saved, but the Doctor mentions when she first realises what they are that their inhabitants would have been crushed to death by the compression process. There's no indication that anything other than barren husks of worlds were restored back to their original places in space.

So in retrospect, I think Capaldi's last two years were better than Whitaker's first, but this was better than Capaldi's first. I think overall for me, this series was enjoyable, but never wowed me. Still appointment viewing for me. New Year's Special -- the DNA of the most dangers creature in the universe, eh? Gotta be a Dalek, right? Then that's it until 2020. Ugh. Another year off. 2020? That is ugh. I bet it is a Dalek as well, and there has been speculation in the news that is what it is. I like Capaldi, I would watch his last seasons, though every time I see a marathon with them, it's like Dr Who saves Christmas, which I know is sort of traditional at this point, but it bores me. It's a new tradition. I think I still need to see the season 10 finale again, and more, because I remember the whole Bill getting turned into a Cyberman, but then she flies off with the oil person pilot, etc. and the masters ... I'd have to watch it over, the whole season, as I lost the plot some...

New Year's Special -- the DNA of the most dangers creature in the universe, eh? Gotta be a Dalek, right? Could be the Doctor herself. After all, she's wiped out the Daleks on a few occasions, so surely she's got to be in the running.

Theoretical physics is a thing. You can choose to disbelieve in it, I guess, but as Neil deGrass Tyson once said (unfortunate choice of scientist at the present time, sadly, but the quote is relevant) -- "The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you." One of my favorite things that doesn't make sense to us right now is the zombie star. https://www.cnn.com/2017/11/08/us/zombie-star-survives-supernova/index.html
