  • 09:25 PM - Parmandur mentioned Morrus in post Dungeons & Dragons at San Diego Comic Con
Did I hear Nate correctly that there will be an announcement made at SDCC on Saturday? They've been teasing an upcoming announcement: this coming Monday is the one year anniversary of the release of the Wayfinders Guide to Eberron and the announcement of the Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica. At minimum, I expect we will get details on the November release. Just a heads up, Morrus

  • 12:27 PM - Aldarc mentioned Morrus in post Why do you play games other than D&D?
Four pages in and no one has still linked or contextualized the original tweet? ORIGINAL TWEET THAT Morrus REFERENCES HERE Why play a RPG other than D&D? For the professional game designers out there working on non-D&D systems, do you try to do what D&D already does well but do it better? Or, do you look at what D&D doesn't do well and try to make your mark there? And here are some follow-up questions that they ask some of the responding posts that tease at the issues that press the author: For argument's sake, let's assume that most new RPG players are getting pulled in by 5e (I suspect that's true, but I couldn't produce hard evidence). So, as a professional game developer competing with 5e, how do you lure those players? How do you answer that important question? Interesting. D&D is obviously the 800 pound gorilla in the room. What's your thinking here about ignoring it? It has such an impact on the industry. Has ignoring D&D translated into business success? Has it pulled in customers? I'm not trying to sell anybody on D&D being the only RPG worth playing (I feel like I...

If I click 'mark forum as read' it does so, until I refresh the page, then they're all unread again. There hasn't been a new post since the 26th, which is unusual.

  • 02:55 PM - Elfcrusher mentioned Morrus in post The perfect D&D edition (according to ENWORLD)
...nely concerned about some of you harassing me and my family in real life.) And now I'm a "sock puppet" and a liar. Yes, I've posted 4,200 times on Enworld for the purpose of trolling warlord fans. Garthanos is behaving despicably: putting me on ignore and then denigrating me behind my back. If he wants to ignore me he should ignore me. One again, a reminder: I'm criticizing a concept in RPG design. If there's been a theme to my posting, it's that I'm vehemently opposed to any sort of imposition of thoughts/emotions/actions on my characters. Maybe I'm too fanatical on that position. Like Emerikol is about "disassociative mechanics" or Saelorn is about using out-of-character knowledge or Tony is about the need for non-magical abilities. That's my thing, and I'm 100% consistent about it (or at least I think I am) and I adamantly oppose anything that starts to infringe on it. If that gets you so angry you have to make personal attacks to combat it, you need help. FFS. EDIT: @Morrus. I'm sorry for "going there" in this thread. I just shouldn't have even said the world warlord. I will try to just stay away from this topic completely from now on. It irks me that I have to be silent on something I care about just because some people just can't handle it, but I will try to do so.

Morrus I know it's low priority, but CM is straight up broken today. I tried to post something and it said "This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 37372418 seconds." That's not a typo, I C&P'd it. Also, thread read status is broken in all subforums (everything shows as unread and won't change), recent threads aren't showing, and somehow goldomark has managed to post ahead of the OP in two threads, despite a date tag up to 2 weeks after the OP. Hacked?

  • 12:20 AM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!
I gotta agree with Morrus on the whole CN thing. Thing is, most people, really, are lawful by D&D standards. They follow rules, they work (reasonably well) in groups every day and generally aren't out there to stir things up. Funny thing is, I think most players choose CN because they don't want to allow the DM to have any hooks into their behavior. It's really a shame that 5e ejected "unaligned" because, frankly, I think that's what most folks mean when they say CN. Sorry, but, if your chaotic neutral character is 100% responsible and trustworthy, he's not actually CN.

  • 05:08 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post Let's Talk About THAC0
THAC0 is clearly preferable to BAB, for two reasons. One, it sounds cooler, and closer to the action of hitting. THAC0. It's an aptonym. Second, it is easier. As Morrus has repeatedly explained to the rest of you, addition is easier. With THACO, you are always adding. With BAB, you have to constantly subtract negative numbers. So NOT ONLY do you have to use subtraction (OH NOES!), you ALSO have to subtract negative numbers. I swear, if I ever have to subtract the negative of the proficiency again .... Stop bowing to the tyranny of math.

Any ETA on when this will be fixed?...I don't want to be seen as blatantly abusing anything. Is there alternative method I can use to report posts in the mean time? No timetable as yet, AFAIK. Perhaps Morrus could make a glitch announcement and ask that reports be PMed to The Mod Squad?* Or, for those unconcerned with anonymous reporting, posting it in Meta? * not pictured: any actual ENWorld Mods.

  • 12:23 AM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
Except that you do. Oh, god. I canít say that yet again to another pithy non-sequitur. I really am out this time before my brain freezes. No you don't there's not much variety in blockbusters, I provided a link to the 90s and now. Big budget movies are now mostly super hero/MCU/sequals. Some movies are just going to cost more money to make and original movies like that are rare now. Consider action genre. Mad Max was good but wasn't original. A lot if small movies you don't even know they exist due to marketing. See what I mean the variety isn't really there now. Some don't even make it to the theatre here. If you live in London/LA etc or USA/UK great but I don't. That's why I was using blockbusters, it's where the money is and even ones that tank you at least have the option of seeing it.

  • 11:43 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever. Special effects don't make a movie but every now and then you get a movie like T2 with special effects plus storyline and a lot of movies like that are no longer made.
  • 11:29 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there. I'll watch almost anything, it's not me though it's the Hollywood Studios that care about the blockbusters. It's why we don't get new blockbusters I posted the top 40 from the 90s and only 8 were sequels. It's not entirely the studios fault they're there to make money, if the audiences aren't watching new IPs en masse.
  • 02:55 PM - Scott Christian quoted Morrus in post Your Opinion Matters
Where is this happening? I would like to know as well. Amazon does not delete reviews. Look at some RPG's out there, and often, the reviews are mixed. Legend of the Five Rings and The Witcher are two that come to mind. Also, I do not believe DriveThru lets its creators delete bad reviews. If they did, I would be surprised.
  • 10:32 AM - CapnZapp quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
Ok, name 10 90ís blockbusters which made a billion dollars.I'm assuming you mean after adjusting for inflation?
  • 10:32 AM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
Ok, name 10 90ís blockbusters which made a billion dollars. Virtually none you would have to adjust for inflation. T2 comes close. 500 million bin 1991 is about 900 now. I also gave the 500 million mark which is roughly the break even point on a modern blockbuster. Solo for example lost money on 400 million. Blockbusters being movies in the 150 to 200 million range plus marketing costs. Movies cost more to make, more to market and post inflation generally earn less than the 90s. Alladin for example got 500 million costing 28 million. I can probably give you 20 or 30 90s movies breaking the equivalent of 500 million. Most of them will be original there's only a handful from the last 10 years that are not superhero movies/sequals/reboots.

Friday, 19th July, 2019

  • 11:36 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Top Gun: Maverick - Official Trailer
It does tons of them every year. You just don't go to see them. I should have rephrased it to ones that make lots of money. That's what the Studios want is that next billion dollar franchise. There's only a few like a handful that have been blockbusters (outside the MCU). Breakeven point for big budget movies these days is around 500 million maybe 400. So are new movies being made. Yes. Are they big blockbusters no. And that's what the studios want. These 80s and 90s reboots are generally movies that adjusted for inflation got more than $500 million on their original run. I'll see if I can find the article, but Inception I think was the biggest original movie in the last few years iirc. It's not the article I read but.
  • 06:43 PM - Ramaster quoted Morrus in post Your Opinion Matters
Where is this happening? Frankly I don't use Enworld's reviews all that much if at all. I was under the impression that we were talking about reviews in general, since the article didn't cite any review site specifically. To be perfectly clear: I've never seen this happen in Enworld. The phenomenon I was referring too can be seen very clearly in Steam, the Appstore, Amazon and many other sites, big and small (restaurant apps come to mind as being the least reliable). I'd also add for Ramaster - it need not matter how good your writing is. It was Jasper the one that made the comment about the quality of writing, not me. But since we are on the subject, some instances of bad grammar are indicatory of dishonest reviews, so I get his fear of posting reviews in what he perceives to be shoddy English for fear of being mistaken for a troll. Most non-native English speakers have felt that way at some point.
  • 12:31 PM - Doc_Klueless quoted Morrus in post What are your favourite single game mechanics?
What are yours? Some of mine are already mentioned so I'll get those out of the way (heh): D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about 5E.Love, love, love how this got rid of all those piddly modifiers. I know other games have done similar things, but this was my first massive exposure to the mechanic. Stunt Points (Dragon Age, Fantasy Age): roll 3d6, doubles on rolls generate Stunt points equal to the value of the off-colored stunt die that a player can spend on various cool thingsI really like this one as it give each round something new and interesting. One of the chief complaints I hear about the AGE system is that "hitting" the target becomes ridiculously easy as the characters advance in level. My own players, when I was learning the system a while back, really complained about it. But the 3d6 roll really isn't so much a "To Hit" Roll as it is a "Generate Stunt Points" Roll. Once we overcame t...

  • 10:39 PM - Mercurius quoted Morrus in post "The Future of D&D is International" (Inverse article)
I think we can decide for ourselves what we find interesting. I find it very interesting. I'm fine you don't. But, I am not ignoring the rest as opposed to just focusing on the thing I found interesting. OK, fair enough. I shouldn't have said it wasn't at all interesting or implied that either of you are guilty of BadWrongInterest, but I was irked in that it is the only quasi-controversial thing in the article, and of course it happens to be the center of discussion. I was concerned that it would be yet another opportunity for people to be offended, feel entitled and/or mis-treated by WotC for not catering to their special needs...thankfully that hasn't really happened in this thread. Anyhow, I too find it somewhat interesting, but more for the underlying implications - that is, why is their approach so successful? Why is an "old-fashioned" game of books, dice, and imagination so popular in a world of immersive video games and virtual realities? What are people craving for and enjoying th...

  • 10:20 AM - Samloyal23 quoted Morrus in post Pathfinder Playtest Rulebook
Well the actual book comes out in 2 weeks; the playtest book is a year out of date. Where did you get it from? Unless youíre a collector, youíre better off waiting for the final rules on Aug 1st. I found it at Powell's Bookstore in Beaverton, Oregon. I had never seen it before. It was $30 instead of $50 like the original core book, so I grabbed it. I figured it would at least be a good introduction to the game.

  • 12:26 AM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post What are your favourite single game mechanics?
D&D's advantage/disadvantage is a really elegant way to replace all those fiddly bonuses. It's one of my favourite things about 5E. From what I have heard...perhaps apocryphally...MM got the idea for that from The One Ring. (Although it's worth pointing out that the mechanic doesn't actually have a name in TOR, it's just spelled out wherever it's used. E.g., "Roll the Feat die twice and take the better result.") But, yeah, I really like that mechanic, too. Although it's not just the mechanic itself that I like, it's the way it explicitly replaces summing up various positive and negative modifiers. But, um, I'm supposed to pick a mechanic I like, so I'll go with: The way that "Success, with Complications" in Dungeon World works.

  • 08:21 PM - aramis erak quoted Morrus in post I only run D&D when I need to establish a player base
Where did you hear/see that assertion, out of curiosity? He's directly quoting me from another thread. I don't recall if that thread is here or at RPGGeek. When one prefers to GM, it's easiest to get player trust by running systems familiar to them. One can then find out who is interested. I'd rather have a game of D&D going than no game at all; I'd rather play (insert list of over 100 other games) than D&D, and If stuck running D&D, my preferences in D&D are limited to Cyclopedia/BECMI/BX and 5E at this time. I'd quit gaming entirely if my only options were pre-4E, and 4E is just too much hassle to GM. Building a base of people who have seen that I can and do run fun games, and how I approach rules makes it easier to recruit for those other 100 games
  • 09:27 AM - amethal quoted Morrus in post RPG Attack Site Closes As Author Outs Himself
His company website has been taken down. Is the KS still running?Yes it is. Other than that one comment this issue seems to have passed the Kickstarter by. I had an update this morning, which I thought might have been a clarification or apology or denial or, you know, something, but instead it was basically "what do you think about our elves?"
  • 08:31 AM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post I only run D&D when I need to establish a player base
Where did you hear/see that assertion, out of curiosity? From the "Why do you play games other than D&D" thread, I believe. And thinking about it, I'd probably be much happier going to play D&D with a strange group than I would most other systems because you really never know what you are going to get with a group, and D&D is at least some sort of baseline. D&D's new slogan: "At least some sort of baseline." Seriously though, that makes sense. If I'm not going to know the people playing, I might as well know the game.
