We should also keep in mind that most of us are not disciplined about differentiating between stating general intent, specific intent, and narration of result. In a bar, a guy dumps a beer in your lap, and laughs at you. You stand up, crack your knuckles and announce, "I'm gonna kick your butt!" That's a declaration of desire - and even figurative, at that, given that several punches to...

The statistical point still holds - running things for one table is about matching the desires of maybe a half-dozen specific people, whether I know them or not. The chances that an outside person I pick will match their preferences, specifically, is low.

Something else to consider. You gave the lich plane shift. Do you intend to use it? You have this planned as the final fight, but if he's got plane shift, he should try to use it to escape, unless you have a good plot reason that he wouldn't do that.

The minions help out a bit I agree. Especially that life drain, that is a scary power to start the party with, as that will effect the party for the rest of the fight (I approve!). On the howl, the problem here is....dropping the party to 0 hp doesn't really do anything mechanics wise. The chance of this actually causing a player death is almost non-existant. What you could do is add an...

So I don’t know your parties level but I’ll assume pretty high stats. 1) phase 1 - complete cake walk. The lich has low ac and hp for that level, and no real defensive spells. He might last a round. 2) phase 2 - now we are talking. The engine gives him much needed durability. I think the d wave is overkill, what i would do instead is an antimagic wave that dispels the party’s buff. That...

I had a long talk with my group about the concerns I had with counterspell, even noting to my players that “I will knock out your spells with this if we Lee it in”. They have decided to keep it. I will say the range does factor in if you are smart about it, and I’ve had bad guys pull back out of counterspell range to use effects. So far it’s working, there are times when I still wonder if I...

Ah, I've figured it out! The way your proclamation that "Hollywood doesn't really do new movies" works in your head is that Hollywood = Disney's 4-5 blockbusters each year, and all of the other 500 movies each year are not by Disney and therefore aren't Hollywood. Ergo, Hollywood doesn't do new movies any more. The No True Scotsman fallacy needs to be renamed, because, man, you not only...

Research and gather opinions before *running* my homebrew adventures? That would be more work than my content is worth, to be honest. Plus, my homebrew is designed for the half-dozen or so people at my table. Unless I am going to a person specifically chosen to match my players' preferences, outside opinions are, statistically, apt to be misleading. Publishing is another matter...

Well, you say more than one thing - if you want more focus in your answers, keep your presentation more focused :) I think giving the Borg a face was inevitable. If you don't give them a face, they are, as I already noted, a force of nature. Characters don't interact *personally* with nature. So, dramatically speaking, the force of nature only allows you to play with the interactions you...

Truly implacable threats aren't interesting. If they are truly implacable, they kill your protagonists and win and the story ends An antagonist isn't interesting if you cannot understand it. A human must be able to grasp the antagonist's motivations and plans, or the antagonist is a force of nature - and the antagonist in a natural disaster film isn't the interesting part. Yes. But "blockbuster" isn't relevant. You don't have to bust the block. You just have to outperform your production costs. Which means, you need to make *gasp* a good movie! This is an assertion without support. Show the logic - what can you tell us about how movies are funded? How does that lead to investors wanting to go with established franchises? "The way movies are...

Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever.

What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there.

Who cares about "big"? What you want is a high gross-to-production ratio. If I gross $122 million on an investment of $9 million, I've gotten a 13x return on my investment! I could make 36 of these small movies for the cost of one Avengers: Endgame, and gross about $4.4 Billion overall. If my Endgame tanks, I lose it all. If half my small budget movies tank, I still walk away with a couple...

Consider - the archetype of "magical school" is kind of a Harry Potter thing. Traditionally, wizards have worked like tradesmen - with a Master-apprentice relationship. There is no need for a school. This does not mean you can't ban wizards - just that "there is no school" does not stand up to scrutiny as a justification.

Ergo, the game of 1e, in practice, was more lethal. You just said it had higher kill rates. Done. You effectively just said, "This analysis gives me result A. Therefore, I must do another analysis that gets me a different result." That's not solid reasoning. Games are not cleanly separable from their playstyles. Trying to level set outside of the playstyle introduces a bias -...

This is also a tale of why CRs and encounter difficulty assessment is almost worthless by mid levels Background My 9th level party are members of Taranya, the most powerful city in the multiverse. If you have ever seen...

I think that while a system in and of itself cannot produce such authenticity, it can certainly get in the way of it. It can also likely encourage it - setting the players up in a good way to have such, to invite it. Bluebeard's Bride (from Magpie Games), and Ten Candles (from Calvalry Games) come to mind in that sense - games designed to enable players to "have all the feels" as the...

Not at all (he said, taking the rhetorical bait). Remember the wargame root. In a wargame, you don't have characters, you have *units*. You only care about the survival of a unit in terms of its tactical value in the wargame scenario - you expect units to die, and you just move on. The old rules are not far from that. As time goes on, the game evolves away from that, to having a different...

Broadly, that would depend upon what other parts of the fiction have already been determined. Sometimes what the players ask for can become THE solution, and sometimes that would not be consistent with things already set in place. I am often for not determining details unless/until you need them, specifically so you can flex for such things, but even if you only set any given detail at the...

I strongly recommend you re-read The Rules. Specifically, the section about keeping things civil. Ridiculing people is a good way to get yourself removed from a conversation. Use of profanity, also, is a good way to get yourself removed from the discussion. In general, we expect you to treat people with a modicum of respect, even if you disagree with them. If you aren't up for that,...

There was a trade language at the time that was based in Italian (mostly northern dialects) with a whole lot of loan words from other languages. This pidgin, sometimes otherwise called "Mediterranean Lingua Franca" or Sabir, was what they were referring to, rather than Latin.

I think 3e may be the most deadly edition. I mean, in terms of, say, if it fell on you from out of a tree, the sheer mass of the published materials would crush you. 2e had a lot too, but much of it was softcover, which hurts less.

I say, slightly in jest, "I search the Duke's desk for a huge ancient red dragon...." Less in jest, I ask - what are we more interested in seeing - the players getting exactly what they ask for, or the players getting what they overall want? Because they are not omniscient, and what they ask for may not actually be what they wanted, needed, or could best use. There is a demonstrable...

How does a pre-industrial society hang together with super-powerful individuals and groups wandering the land at will, especially as these people rocket up in personal power in just a few years?

I know review copies have been sent out to various people (ours went to Ben, our Pathfinder columnist) but the reviews are embargoed until Aug 1st. And, of course, there’s the 3PPs, but they’re not even allowed to tell you who they are until then! :)

Well the actual book comes out in 2 weeks; the playtest book is a year out of date. Where did you get it from? Unless you’re a collector, you’re better off waiting for the final rules on Aug 1st.

The last game I ran, I did have the common problem - the rogue, with better Initiative, similar AC, and high damage from sneak attack, left the party paladin feeling a tad... unimportant in combat. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Yeah, but I think you're treating the discussion as if folks are choosing their wordign along strict logical lines, when that behavior is not terribly common. "Any DM (OSR or not)..." may not be strictly true. Though, it may be - they may *see* the logic, but reject it. But whatever the case, in spending your time refuting the strict statement, you miss the actual point that perhaps lots...

Well, it isn't like the pantheon and cultural structure are cleanly separable. The gods support particular social structures. And, in our fantasy worlds, the gods have a say in things - if a god gives spell power to elvish worshippers/clerics, and does not give power to non-elves, that's going to reinforce religion being a racial characteristic. Um... we have the phrase lingua franca...

What part of "particularly on a success" didn't connect for you? Your response to that is to note that the failure case is always infinite, so there's no narrowing at all? Really?

Or, the also not-uncommon "start at 3rd level". Note that "a half-dozen people before you suggested X" does not actually mean that those half-dozen are representative. Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

CleverNickName are very awesome for doing this. I was trying to do big math and guessed that they would bring in half the previous day for a number of days before the people dried up and then half again for the rest of the days, but could not get that far. I was thinking around 12 million, but don't want to be cheap and jump on Morrus and bet $1 higher. I'm going to go big and say $23,500,000

No evidence here that this book will not be equally Greyhawk focused as the original modules (more, quite possibly). Mike Mearls was just talking about Greyhawk and how he wants to get a Greyhawk product into the world on Dragon Talk a couple weeks ago. Relax. Pattern of behavior of taking items out of greyhawk to FR ToEE and ToH moved out of greyhawk into realms. So its very possible it will happen again. Morrus. Thanks for starting to understand. Greyhawk is important to more then a few. And love to see it fly again.

  • 02:19 AM - ClaytonCross mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
This phenomenon of people quoting D&D Beyond stats to prove points happens the most right after they post some of their data. Those posts and threads are months old at this point and so I'm not going to dig them up. However, there's been comments about their data in more recent threads, but it's not important enough to go digging through pages and pages of comments looking for the proverbial needle in the haystick that I know is there (because I've recently read it) just to prove you wrong. Instead I'll give you one current example. The example: @Morrus did. It's still on the front page of this forum and shows in the thread title: "90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels" People also use invalid math to prove points. Example: "Average DPR with % hit", we have talked about it before that this is not an acute representation of actual game play damage being that average DPR is only correct about 3% of the time for any specific battle, does not account for 0 sum damage on miss, or loss of damage from over kill... however, I don't have a better metric for measuring damage. So I use it too sometimes to prove a point as do you. The same is true for D&D Beyond data. As @Morrus pointed out... We don’t need data at all. Sometimes they share stuff as a conversation point. And it’s fun to talk about. But we don’t need it. It’s just an excuse for us all to flap our lips You are correct that 1. It will be used to argue and 2. it is not accurate... However, when it agrees with an argument anyone is likel...
  • 01:30 AM - ClaytonCross mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
LOL, I love the n00b insult at the end. It's very entertaining! :) Yes which proves his point in that if post are a measure of validity Morrus's 39,521 post to your 3,940 posts would make you a n00b and irrelevant if we are calling that a valid maker of knowledge base. Which we are not. So while your one of the more interesting posters to read you do have a tendency to get a bit dismissive of posters based on off point arguments like posts. I still came to your thread because you make interesting discussion and I heard you. I have even posted a on the D&D Beyond feature requests asking for player inactive characters tags and a statement on slides listing the day delimiter so as we read slides we have a beater representation of what the slide is depicting. That said, questioning the validity of one someone says based on how much they said instead of the content of their argument makes you look bad, instead of making them look unqualified. If your going to say the statement was in jest... their is no indication in the text of the post that implies that and the person your posting to does not know you well enough to infer that ...

  • 06:33 PM - FrogReaver mentioned Morrus in post The Pitfalls of D&D Beyond Data
... They already have a method to account for that, which gives an even better data set than the question you proposed: When the Data says "Active Characters" it means they have controlled for characters who haven't been updated in the past X days. It doesn't matter if the character is meant to be an NPC or PC, it just maters if someone is actually going back to update it, all other characters are considered to be abandoned or a test character. Morrus has claimed multiple times that the charts represent all characters created and even includes the ones not necessarily played. I'd lean toward him being correct on this but maybe not?

  • 05:19 PM - Aldarc quoted Morrus in post Why do you play games other than D&D?
Inspired by a question somebody asked on Twitter. My response was that every system feels different and provides a different play experience. You can certainly make most any system do anything, but playing Call of Cthulhu with the Mutants & Masterminds rules is going to feel very different to CoC with the CoC rules. Every game has it's own niche and just needs to serve that niche well. In the last year I've run: D&D 5E, WOIN, Pathfinder 2E Playtest, Ghostbusters 1980s RPG, Call of Cthuhu. Some for longer than others (Ghostbusters was just a couple of sessions, and we only got halfway through the PF2 playtest because the playtest schedule was so fast). Each of those games feels very different. So why do you play games other than D&D? What is it that your game of choice does that makes it the best fit for the stories and genres you're playing with?It may help if you embed or supply the Tweet in context. I know that Tweet, if this is the one I think it is, has essentially gone viral am...

Maybe. I do want to keep this thing small though, so it won't be anything like the DMG or anything. I could see a page (with a big picture on the top half) of tips in a Judging section.
  • 01:53 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
I've very deliberately left that abstract. You can move as far as the Judge lets you. I don't envisage people using minis with this or counting distances and speeds. All I said was it might be good to explicit about leaving it completely up to the Judge. OTOH, eventually there will be a Judging Simply6 section of the book, I suppose.

v1.3 includes new monsters, and new equipment. @procrastonaut there's now an adjustment to the level calc for monsters. Negative scores no longer count, as it is assumed a monster will do its best self for the few rounds it encounters the PCs, not its worst. Cool! looks like Werewolf should be Level 1/4 since Commoners are now level 1
  • 12:20 AM - procrastonaut quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
7 + 2 + 2 -1 -1 = 9.(To clarify, the negative numbers count too). QUOTE=Morrus;7631912]7 + 2 + 2 -1 -1 = 9. (To clarify, the negative numbers count too).[/QUOTE] With that in mind, by my reckoning the dragon on pg. 8 should be level 25 (1 special ability), the giant spider 5 (2 special abilities), and the vampire 9 (“instantly dies in sunlight” should count as a negative, I’d think). Speaking of the dragon, I’d suggest it’s special ability be renamed Breathe Fire, Fiery Breath, etc (instead of Breath Fire).

  • 10:26 PM - pogre quoted Morrus in post 40 Million People Have Played D&D [UPDATED!]
That's old enough: the service economy wasn't the dominant paradigm yet. I value service time for money. I'm an attorney (although I teach these days) - I better. I think it's more along the lines of what was said by others - it seems to rob a little of the "feel good" hobby aspect of it. Totally admit it is not logical, just my personal feeling. The pro DM discussion has arisen twice a year for the last 20 years at least. Quite right. Sorry about that. The discussion has evolved in that time though. Initially, I think most gamers were upset or at least fascinated by the idea. These days it is more of a given. If it gives a few people a job or side hustle they look forward to - more power to them. I certainly am a lot more accepting of the idea than I was 20 years ago - even if my old gamer gut still winces a tiny bit. ;)
  • 08:20 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
By the same argument fighting, shooting, and defence are al forms of combat. Any skill list can be pared down indefinitely until you just end up with “skill”, but I do feel those two things are different enough. I wouldn’t want the average orc to charm somebody. Some things should be separated out in detail. And some should not. And some of it should be optional rules. I think the philosophy should be "these skill are in the book so any additional skills should be opposed by them." So Appraise being performed by a merchant whom is buying something from the PC would be a persuasion roll against the merchants appraise. And the PC doing the appraising is probably just rolling Thieving, Knowledge, Art, or something against the standard 10 unless there is a merchant trying to make it seem more or less valuable.
  • 07:15 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
I'll add it in. Don't figure anybody will take it though! That isn't absolutely necessary. In fact, keeping the skill list smaller is probably best. Is Intimidation necessary? Persuasion could just be Influence and it applies to all forms of influence.
  • 05:36 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
Yeah, if you were racing the dragon or it was chasing you. Flight v Athletics. Phew! You escaped! Appraisal just figure dragons can count their gold hoard, so they can make a check to value stuff. How do normal characters Appraise? I noticed version 1.2 changed Dodging to Defense. Good change.
  • 05:16 PM - procrastonaut quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
    7 + 2 + 2 -1 -1 = 9. (To clarify, the negative numbers count too). Ah, gotcha... thanks!
  • 04:45 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
Just playing with some magic items. Just a few basic obvious ones. A wand or staff boosts your Magic skill, a magic sword boosts your Fighting skill etc. What do you roll against to teleport? Or flight? Dragons have 6d6 flight. But when would you roll that? In place of Athletics? Hmm. Dragons also have Appraisal. How does that work?
  • 03:24 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
Improvised equipment is -1d6 (pg2). But honestly for attacks, all attacks do 1 damage, so you'd just punch instead! It's quite abstract. You're that good at fighting with whatever, but if you have a magic sword you get +1d6. I assume there will be a lot of Hitting Harder going on throughout the system. Which is why I recommended moving that to the core mechanic section. The old magic system just about required using Hitting Harder if you wanted to heal yourself. My only problem with the new magic system is it doesn't model Superpowers as well any more. Recovery in supers games is rarely tied to waking up the next morning.
  • 02:51 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
I haven't really addressed equipment yet... in the same way that all attacks do 1 damage, I wouldn't differentiate with armour. Basic equipment would just be part of your character description; the only thing that would need calling out is special items. So what happens when you don't have your equipment? (I suppose you get -1d6 but your FAQ is missing this.)
  • 02:07 PM - Baumi quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
50/50 is the chance most people get for most things — it’s the standard difficulty. You have a 50/50 chance to pick a lock, bust down a door, shoot most things, etc. Yes, but you have to spend all your Character-Creation Dice to get those 3d6 and then you also have only one Roll/day and these are spent. Thats harsher then even Old Shool D&D (where you only had one Spell, but this was a extremly potent one and works automatically).
  • 01:59 PM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
50/50 is the chance most people get for most things — it’s the standard difficulty. You have a 50/50 chance to pick a lock, bust down a door, shoot most things, etc. I would have (perhaps an advanced rule) where all unattended items have one skill: Universal 3d6 (10). And the GM can decide some items have higher or lower values for this skills. So you might have a Lock that is Universal 5d6 (17) and thus it is harder to pick with thievery, or break with Fighting. EDIT: The other benefit of a Universal skill for unattended items is it co-insides with, say, using Magic to create a wall of fire. The wall becomes an unattended item whose dice size is the same as the Magic skill used to create it. Oh, and you said everything is 50/50. But it isn't 10+ on 3d6 is 58/42. If you wanted 50/50 odds, everything would be 3d6 (11).
  • 01:35 PM - Jay Verkuilen quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
The other option is to borrow WOIN's countdown mechanic. You cast your spells, but any 6s you roll get removed from the dice pool, until you have no dice left and can no longer cast until it replenishes at dawn. Another is actually pretty thematic for how magic is often described in fiction: To cast without lots of health loss, the mage needs to spend time gathering mana. This can be an action of some sort, possibly a roll. However, Health can be substituted for mana, meaning that if the mage wants to nova it's possible to substitute Health for gathered mana.
  • 12:54 PM - Baumi quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
    - Magic changed from health cost to a countdown pool. It's awesome to see the fast changes/improvements to the game 8D I do like the countdown pool more than costing health, but it is way to hard now to use Magic. Even if you give all your starting dice into Magic, you still only have a ~50/50 Chance to casting a spell if you use ALL your dice for the day.
  • 05:33 AM - jmucchiello quoted Morrus in post Simply6: A Fast, Light Universal RPG
Nope. Just skills. Fighting, Shooting, Knowledge, Persuasion, etc. So I assume for fantasy, light armor might add +1-+2 dice to dodge. medium armor +2-+4 dice to dodge, etc.
