Patrick Stewart sounds older than he does currently in real life, and Spiner has been de-aged. Interesting! Reports also say Riker is in it. I knew he directed some of it, but apparently he’s actually in it. I hope there isn’t too much focus on the Romulan stuff. With Nemesis, and the Abrahms Trek reboot, I’m kinda bored of what wasn’t a very interesting plot thread in the first place. I’m...

I really don't understand what your point is, and it seems to change with each post. My interest in the conversation (such that it was) has expired as it's gong nowhere interesting, but I'll reiterate that if you want to see original movies, there are tons of them every year, and they're awesome and available to you. If your requirement for them is that they have to be blockbusters, then I guess...

Again, why does it matter to you that films be blockbusters? There are lots of non-blockbuster films every year. They are great. Go watch 'em. They're still making them, plenty. There's no "fault" to assign. Nothing is wrong. Blockbusters are there, small films are there. Watch either, or both, or whatever.

What's with your obsession with blockbusters? Does a film only count if it's a blockbuster? So? Go see them if you think you'll like them. You're not an investor. If your requirement to see a film is (a) it be original, and (b) it must be a blockbuster then you're only hurting yourself. Otherwise -- go see the films. They're there.

Who cares about "big"? What you want is a high gross-to-production ratio. If I gross $122 million on an investment of $9 million, I've gotten a 13x return on my investment! I could make 36 of these small movies for the cost of one Avengers: Endgame, and gross about $4.4 Billion overall. If my Endgame tanks, I lose it all. If half my small budget movies tank, I still walk away with a couple...

Consider - the archetype of "magical school" is kind of a Harry Potter thing. Traditionally, wizards have worked like tradesmen - with a Master-apprentice relationship. There is no need for a school. This does not mean you can't ban wizards - just that "there is no school" does not stand up to scrutiny as a justification.

I think that's the issue right there. "System" and "numinous" are at cross purposes. I have had RPG moments that have felt numinous, but they have typically had little to do with "system", and more to do with atmosphere and immersion.

Ergo, the game of 1e, in practice, was more lethal. You just said it had higher kill rates. Done. You effectively just said, "This analysis gives me result A. Therefore, I must do another analysis that gets me a different result." That's not solid reasoning. Games are not cleanly separable from their playstyles. Trying to level set outside of the playstyle introduces a bias -...

It is a basic, and calculable thing. That being said, I have to note that there are actually two forms of magic that are getting conflated: 1) The magic of myth and folklore 2) The day-to-day...

I think, if you ask "Which edition was most lethal?" that really asks - what percentage of characters did each edition actually kill? It has nothing to do with whether a 2e fighter could beat a 1e fighter, or otherwise comparing their stats to each other. It asks what power level characters were, *with respect to the challenges they were given*. Unfortunately, the real numbers are lost...

I did say it was in jest. But, if you want to be a bit more pedantic about it - not all games give the GM a whole lot of space to choose when/what they can veto. And not all GMs are experienced, and know when to veto. And if the GM thinks they always know all implications of things at the time they are decided, and make a good choice on what to veto every time, they are kidding themselves. ...

I think that while a system in and of itself cannot produce such authenticity, it can certainly get in the way of it. It can also likely encourage it - setting the players up in a good way to have such, to invite it. Bluebeard's Bride (from Magpie Games), and Ten Candles (from Calvalry Games) come to mind in that sense - games designed to enable players to "have all the feels" as the...

Not at all (he said, taking the rhetorical bait). Remember the wargame root. In a wargame, you don't have characters, you have *units*. You only care about the survival of a unit in terms of its tactical value in the wargame scenario - you expect units to die, and you just move on. The old rules are not far from that. As time goes on, the game evolves away from that, to having a different...

Broadly, that would depend upon what other parts of the fiction have already been determined. Next D&D game I run, I may simply remove the Dex modifier from damage from Finesse. I am not sure it needs whole fighting styles and such to then make up for it.

Using posts here for that is like using self-selected poll data - it does not represent what portion of people actually feel that way, as much as how strongly this small number of people feel about the point.

I am not sure that this is somehow more true of gnomes than it is of, say, elves, with all the sub-races that have been out there. And, heavens forfend you can't summarize *an entire race of people* in a neat little stereotype! The horror!

It matters to my play experience. It probably impacts the choices I make in play. So, by that measure, it makes a difference in the campaign. Also, as a GM, I take the player choices to be indicative of things they want to see. If you play a gnome, we're probably going to see a lot more gnome culture and social role in the game than if nobody chose to play a gnome. That probably means...

Modiphius has announced that the Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook for Star Trek Adventures will be out on July 25th. 11 alien species, new starships, and lots of information about the Federation and worlds of the quadrant, available from their web store very soon. “In the end, it comes down to throwing one pitch afteranother, and seeing what happens. With each new consequence, the game begins...

We did a skit about that in last week's podcast, with a player suggesting more and more outlandish races, starting with deep gnomes and tieflings, through aaracokra and minotaurs, to mind flayers and dragons, to daleks and Borg Queens, to, eventually, V'ger. The idea of somebody playing V'ger as a PC still cracks me up.

You also get into some interesting sticky wicket scenarios with that one. That means with a 2nd level spell a cleric can effectively "trap souls" for long periods of time. Which depending on your cosmology could be very problematic.

Both of you decided to continue a personal dispute despite the warning. Time for both of you to take a walk - find another thread where you're not going to engage in personal sniping. Don't post in this one any further. Despite how clear this case is, one or both of you will likely disagree and want to argue with me. Take it to PM, please, and leave the thread alone. Anyone else?

In the past year I wrapped up a PF campaign, but also played a 5E campaign and two FFG Legend of the Five Rings campaigns. So it's less "switching game systems" as "trying the hip new thing to see how we like it."

I see several signs of people getting snippy, personal, and being far more interested in being right than exploring ideas. Folks are looking dug in, defending positions rather than thinking about whether the other guy has a point. That's a good sign that the thread's about done. Keep it respectful, keep it constructive, or find another topic, folks.

The moment when you have to say, "To not understand and agree with me, you are either doing bad thing A, or bad thing B," is the moment you should step back, and consider that this means you must be flawless. Are you flawless? No? Then bad things on the other guy's part are *not* the only option. Maybe, just maybe, there's another basis for the misunderstanding. Until you are more...

abe ray your habit of starting a thread asking a question, and not even acknowledging (let a alone thanking) those who go out of their way to help you is a little rude. It’s been going on for some time. If somebody helps you out, please have the decency to thank them before asking them something for something else. Thanks! :)

(A question for those planning to play PF2; if you’re not, this isn’t really for you - don’t threadcrap, please). So you’re planning on playing PF2. While you are probably coming from PF1, is anybody coming from 5E? Obviously, it’s not a permanent thing; you can play more than one game, try out others, all that stuff. But I was curious whether there’s a demographic out here who feel PF2 is...

I'm trying out a concept. A half-elf who failed to become a blade singer. Ostracized from his community, he eventually became a solider and eventually a squad leader. So I'm playing a frontline fighter with a lot of skills, some inspirational benefits to his groups, and some magics to include in his swordplay. I'm going as a broad generalist, so 16 cha and 16 dex, with a 12 con. I've decided...

Currently we know of the following methods: 1) Heightened Spell metamagic 2) Bane 3) Bestow Curse Are there any other class ability, spells, magic items, etc that can lower a person's saving throw?

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

  • 07:10 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post Why 5E may be the last edition of D&D
Well, nothing in the history of the world has ever lasted forever. I suspect this edition will last longer than any previous ones, but 6E will one day be a big thing. Maybe the biggest thing! I doubt it. I think 6e will be a relatively small thing, more in line with something like The One Ring 2nd Edition. The same game, cleaned up, some lessons learned, minor changes, math changed where they learned too late that they'd biffed an equation, etc. I doubt that even what subclasses are in the PHB will be changed much. I'd expect stuff like Four Elements Monk getting a rebalance, maybe Ranger, at most, would get a real overhaul. That's the most drastic change I'd expect to see. You'll be able to play a 5e Fey Warlock in a 6e game. It will probably come in a gorgeous boxed set, though. I'd love a book for 5e like 4e's Rules Compendium, and I wouldn't be surprised if such a thing came out with "6e". its just been 4 years. I think they will start thinking seriously about 6e in the next coupl...

I like that idea, but I don't think that phrasing is easy to parse. I wonder if it's better just to put it in your own words? Maybe something like: MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $65 for two hardcover core rulebooks Perfect! David, Barantor, thank you for suggesting this. I think that'll be a great addition. :-) Morrus, thank you for the formatting, it's a clearer vision. :-)
  • 04:22 PM - WaterRabbit quoted Morrus in post Flanking - Do you use it, and if so how?
I agree with those that feel that advantage is too big a bonus and too easy to get while flanking. It creates a weird dynamic where the DM is left trying to figure out how to ensure everybody doesn't always have advantage on all attacks. I just don't understand this. It literally has never come up in over a year of playing with this rule. We started as a group with it and as the DM I have never had to try and figure this out. It just isn't an issue. I think most people forget that to flank using this rule the flankers have to be exactly opposite from each other. That means one of those characters is going to be more exposed to an enemy with the commensurate increase in risk. As the DM, there are much more difficult problems than this. Making sure that you don't over coordinate the opposition forces to an unfair advantage against the party. As the DM you have perfect knowledge of where every combatant is located which means it is very easy to out maneuver the party if you aren't...

  • 10:03 AM - delericho quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Even the kids who liked the prequels don't rank them as classics in the way we did the originals. When they're our age, they won't be reminiscing about the Star Wars prequels with rose-covered glasses in the way we do the OT. They'll be reminiscing about something, but it won't be the Star Wars prequels. Those three films never had that cultural zeitgeist. My guess for that "something else" would be Harry Potter - the first film in that series hit in 2001, between TPM and AotC. Of course, JKR is now running into trouble with her own set of prequels. Maybe in twenty years Disney will buy that IP, too?
  • 05:02 AM - Jester David quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Literally not what I said. Read it again, please. at The author or the first link ranks Revenge of the Sith as their favourite, I do think that in 20 years the 25yo who were introduced to Star Wars via the prequels might view them with the same nostalgia. And right now they might well enjoy those films like I enjoyed A New Hope prior to the prequels. Because ANH isn't that good. Not on paper. It has terrible dialogue, poor pacing, flat characters, and is tropey as :):):):). It uses plots from radio and film serials that were already three decades old that point. It's good largely because or nostalgia. And you can see how well Star Wars does in places with out that nostalgia by looking at China, where it is crushed at the box office.

I look fondly towards stuff like Friends, Seinfield, Sky Dancers, the Dreamstone, and the like. Granted, I'm not that fond of the prequels, but being that fond of Star Wars after the 80's is not really feasible. The OT was groundbreaking and highly influential, but that is the problem, everything made after the OT is heavily influenced by it, where once it was a fresh new thing, it barely stands apart by now. By the time the original trilogy was re-released in the mid nineties, I had been bombarded by countless parodies, shot outs and homages of it to really care. -And lets not go into the empire strikes...

Presumably then they were that when she arrived? Her actions didn’t have anything to do with it? Her actions in the season premiere put Tim Shaw into the position of being able to kill planets, and provided him the motivation to do so.
  • 08:43 PM - MarkB quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
The five planets were saved and returned home. That was that while wiring the TARDIS into the telepathic aliens thing. The planets were saved, but the Doctor mentions when she first realises what they are that their inhabitants would have been crushed to death by the compression process. There's no indication that anything other than barren husks of worlds were restored back to their original places in space.
  • 05:01 PM - dragoner quoted Morrus in post Thirteenth Doctor - First Season - Thoughts? (SPOILERS WELCOME)
So in retrospect, I think Capaldi's last two years were better than Whitaker's first, but this was better than Capaldi's first. I think overall for me, this series was enjoyable, but never wowed me. Still appointment viewing for me. New Year's Special -- the DNA of the most dangers creature in the universe, eh? Gotta be a Dalek, right? Then that's it until 2020. Ugh. Another year off. 2020? That is ugh. I bet it is a Dalek as well, and there has been speculation in the news that is what it is. I like Capaldi, I would watch his last seasons, though every time I see a marathon with them, it's like Dr Who saves Christmas, which I know is sort of traditional at this point, but it bores me. It's a new tradition. I think I still need to see the season 10 finale again, and more, because I remember the whole Bill getting turned into a Cyberman, but then she flies off with the oil person pilot, etc. and the masters ... I'd have to watch it over, the whole season, as I lost the plot some...

New Year's Special -- the DNA of the most dangers creature in the universe, eh? Gotta be a Dalek, right? Could be the Doctor herself. After all, she's wiped out the Daleks on a few occasions, so surely she's got to be in the running.

Theoretical physics is a thing. You can choose to disbelieve in it, I guess, but as Neil deGrass Tyson once said (unfortunate choice of scientist at the present time, sadly, but the quote is relevant) -- "The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you." One of my favorite things that doesn't make sense to us right now is the zombie star. https://www.cnn.com/2017/11/08/us/zombie-star-survives-supernova/index.html

...ery real science. Postulating completely unverifiable elements to make your equations work is not good science. Now, at the moment, it's the best we've got, so, there's that. In any case, I was trying to be a bit tongue in cheek and poking a bit of fun at astronomers. But, I would point out, "isn't really science" is not what I said. What I said was that astronomy gets a bit more latitude than other sciences when it comes time to actually prove their hypotheses. Being able to make up stuff just so your equations work doesn't work in other sciences. And, unfortunately, people who get into sciences can be just as dogmatic as anyone else. I mean, you're apparently absolutely sure that your model of the universe is correct despite the fact that it hasn't actually been proven and remains largely theoretical. I mean, heck, NASA says you're wrong: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/review/dr-marc-space/dark-sky.html I'm a little more comfortable believing NASA than you, Morrus.

I think the issue here is a fundamental misunderstanding of the amount of work that goes into serious science, and a frankly insulting trivialization of that work into soundbytes like "magic particles" and implications that scientists just “make stuff up”. It's the traditional weapons of the psuedoscientist and the anti-science campaigners. I understand that a lot of work and match goes into these theories. And I'm certainly not an anti-science person. However, at the root of these theories are ideas that are put forth to explain things that we don't understand, and even with all that work, are often wrong. I love reading about science. Especially astronomy. Dark matter/energy just doesn't seem to me to be any less of a "hack"(To use Umbran's term) than the theory that negative matter is being created. I'm sure work went into that theory as well.

Nope. The universe is 14B years old. Space is more than 14B light years in diameter. If light moved at infinite speed, then yes, it would all reach us at the same time and it would all be white. But it doesn't - the light further than 14B light years away from us hasn't reached us yet. If space was *infinite* then the light from stars an infinite distance away would take an infinite amount of time to reach us, so we'd never see it. What rules? And again, I ask, what is this "leeway" they're being granted, and by whom? They're just people doing science and publishing their findings. They produce solid mathematics-filled peer-reviewed papers. What one reads in the popular press isn't scientific papers, and when one argues against what one read in the popular press, one isn't arguing against anything other than journalist's poor explanations and simplistic interpretations of 40 pages of equations and bad analogies. But, the thing is, because of the Big Bang, all the stars in the uni...
