I am not sure that this is somehow more true of gnomes than it is of, say, elves, with all the sub-races that have been out there. And, heavens forfend you can't summarize *an entire race of people* in a neat little stereotype! The horror!

It matters to my play experience. It probably impacts the choices I make in play. So, by that measure, it makes a difference in the campaign. Also, as a GM, I take the player choices to be indicative of things they want to see. If you play a gnome, we're probably going to see a lot more gnome culture and social role in the game than if nobody chose to play a gnome. That probably means...

We did a skit about that in last week's podcast, with a player suggesting more and more outlandish races, starting with deep gnomes and tieflings, through aaracokra and minotaurs, to mind flayers and dragons, to daleks and Borg Queens, to, eventually, V'ger. The idea of somebody playing V'ger as a PC still cracks me up.

You also get into some interesting sticky wicket scenarios with that one. That means with a 2nd level spell a cleric can effectively "trap souls" for long periods of time. Which depending on your cosmology could be very problematic.

Don't post in this one any further. Despite how clear this case is, one or both of you will likely disagree and want to argue with me. Take it to PM, please, and leave the thread alone. Anyone else?

In the past year I wrapped up a PF campaign, but also played a 5E campaign and two FFG Legend of the Five Rings campaigns. So it's less "switching game systems" as "trying the hip new thing to see how we like it."

I see several signs of people getting snippy, personal, and being far more interested in being right than exploring ideas. Folks are looking dug in, defending positions rather than thinking about whether the other guy has a point. That's a good sign that the thread's about done. Keep it respectful, keep it constructive, or find another topic, folks.

abe ray your habit of starting a thread asking a question, and not even acknowledging (let a alone thanking) those who go out of their way to help you is a little rude. It’s been going on for some time. If somebody helps you out, please have the decency to thank them before asking them something for something else. Thanks! :)

(A question for those planning to play PF2; if you’re not, this isn’t really for you - don’t threadcrap, please). So you’re planning on playing PF2. While you are probably coming from PF1, is anybody coming from 5E? Obviously, it’s not a permanent thing; you can play more than one game, try out others, all that stuff. But I was curious whether there’s a demographic out here who feel PF2 is...

A constant theme of balance discussions is what levels you are discussing them. Many things have different balance perspective depending on what levels you consider them. But even though dnd has levels 1-20, its common knowledge that the majority of games don't play the full level range. There are many a group that will never play a 20th level character, and so balance discussions at that...

Yes. I agree. That's exactly the point. But when you tell them the speed of light, or how gravity scales, you are telling them how the fantasy universe works! Because when the GM says these things, they are Truth. And players...

As a physicist, my advice: don't go there. One of the big points we get to when we look at the fundamental constants is not just that "Hey, the physical constants are exactly what they are", but "Hey, if the physical constants change even a small bit, life (and even matter) as we know it ceases to exist." This is one answer to the question of "Why is the Universe exactly the way it is?"...

On the face of this, it is just a hard question - and only hard in the sense of our having put a stake in the ground in claiming the character was chaste, and we often dislike being...

I tend to agree. "Need" is an absolute, and there are few absolutes that actually hold for us. Mechanics may make it easier to make such challenges, and/or make them eaiser for players to accept. "Fidelity" has two connotations. One is "strict adherence" - this is like a "high-fidelity recording". I don't think that's the sense meant here. The sense intended here is probably...

That's because you are again swapping between different kinds of "challenge" willy-nilly. We typically talk about "challenge the player" and "challenge the character" in a rather game-centered* manner. If I had you a sudoku puzzle to solve, with no reference to the mechanics your character uses, I am challenging you, the player. If I give a strictly constructed skill challenge (make skill...

There are almost no original IPs... in movies. In print (novels and comic books, for example) there's loads of new stuff. It is far, far cheaper to produce a novel or comic book run than it is to produce a movie, so it will often make far more sense to take something that's at least been tried out in the public arena before you spend $75 million and more on a movie.

I think we get a sense of it, at least. So, here's the difference - you define viability in terms of "pulling weight", doing damage, and such. And I can accept that as something that can be important enough to a player to be a deal-breaker. Most of the time, I figure even-handedness in spreading around effectiveness is a useful thing for a game's design. But, my personal definition of...

RPGs that have no random elements exist. There is uncertainty not in what the random generator will produce, but instead uncertainty in what they other person will choose as their priorities.

In fact it was MORE important at the time. I looked at other games but it was among the best for backwards compatibility. PF2 in the playtest was far from that kind of ideal, as far as I could tell. I wrote that kobolds had "sorcerer" as their favored class and that they say that they have the blood of dragons coursing through their veins. I meant everyone to figure that they were deluding themselves, but everyone loved the idea and it became canonical, basically. I don't remember how that got applied to human sorcerers, but we were definitely trying to make 3E cooler than 2E.

That's a good analysis. The other trick is that if charging up let's you get double-value out of your daily spells, it increases your per-day power level even if it doesn't increase your per-round power level.

For D&D (any edition), I don't think you can make that general statement. In some games, the GM says, "this is a tough encounter," and the mechanics *will* be tough - the narration literally determines the mechanics. D&D, though, has a significant past tradition of tournament play, and a current tradition of purchasing adventures created by others, and presenting them with minimal editing. ...

Define, "role-play in perfect character". I will assume a few things that I figure are solidly in-genre here for the point. The noble knight wants to be chaste. He also wants to protect the kingdom from whatever threatens it this week. So, the knight has a conflict of priorities - both of which are part of his character. The point here is to ask which is dominant, and have that be an...

"interesting" is subjective, so no, this is not generally true. Especially when you call out that combat is "fun" - fun things aren't interesting? I know players who find tactical combat or cinematic combat scenes very interesting. Don't you? I think most of us use dice-rolling combat not as a "standard" for measure, but as an example/analogy that is ready to hand. If this analogy does not...

I was trying to say that, if you are in complete control, you always have the ability to say, "Nah, this has no impact," and so there is never a challenge to the core. Challenge does not happen in a position of certainty.

Yes, but do you realize how much variation in playstyle and play goals there still is/was between groups given those parameters? I mean, correct me if I am wrong, but a run-of-the-mill thief would not be considered viable under your parameters. Do you actually think most of the rest of us who played found that to be true? If not, we ought to consider why others found it viable, and you did...

Morrus and darjr: Okay, I know I have activated the wiki setting in the campaign group, but when I went to save this page, I didn't see an option to associate it with the group. Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

Dude, obviously we had a backup of the db. Otherwise where did all those 130K members and 5,000,000 posts come from? They weren't all newly posted since December! :D Huh. I just thought Crothian had started posting a bit more.
  • 01:39 AM - Janx quoted Morrus in post Is this as fast as this site is going to get?
So, we're done. There's still a memory upgrade to come, but the main part is finished. Well, it's running faster, more like the EN World good speed days. I know you got a dude to do some tweaking and stuff, but can you confirm that y'all have done any variation of the following: get a snapshot of the server if it is a VM punch out backups of the DB, really easy and fast if it it is MySQL using mysqldump make copies of the code & modifications (you never should have lost code, and the original developer should have had a copy). Having a disaster recovery plan in place would have mitigated the damage. it ain't gotta be fancy and long winded. But backing up your code/site directories was probably just as important as the data. We lost way more code/features than posts from the great crash, when it should have been the reverse. Code don't change that often between backups, data does. Granted, its possible, you had all the code, but it wasn't compatible with the new vbulletin. I only in...

  • 04:32 AM - malcolm_n quoted Morrus in post What Happened to Santiago?
I'm currently toying with the idea of a Kickstarter to increase the budget for this drastically. Like, tons of gorgeous colour art.I'm torn by this. Massive amounts of new and awesome art vs. having to work to get it ;) In all seriousness, it's an awesome consideration.

  • 10:21 PM - MDK quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
10,000 entries? Holy crap! That would take you days just to enter into the system. Well if you can think of a faster way I'm all ears :P If not, I'll start with a small table (there's one for a random horse trader that's really small, or I could do the Bag o' Beanz which has only 500 or so entries plus subtables if I remeber correctly), and start on the big tables once I get the hang of it. Assuming ogre can handle it of course.
  • 04:52 PM - MDK quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
Yup, that's actually the whole point of it. Tables and generator can reference other tables and generators (your own or somebody else's). The depth and complexity is only limited by what folks actually create with it! Cool, I'll go and dig up my tables, looking forward to using them again! :)
  • 12:01 PM - MDK quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
It uses a web interface where you fill in fields. So if you're creating a random table, there's a line of boxes down the left where you enter numbers, and a line down the right where you enter corresponding results. All designed to be as easy to use as possible. The additional scripts haven't been written yet! That's pretty easy yes :P I do hope there'll be options for adding subtables though, it makes for much more versatility. Like the colour table you mention on the kickstarter page: 6 entries for 6 colours (I'm missing at least 4 colours there already :P ); I'd want to have a colour table that can handle entries like 1: [coloursubtable] red, which causes the program to look up the subtable and add the options of (none), light, dark, deep, faded, bright, dirty, so I can get a result of red, faded red, or bright red. Since you also say it can generate whole towns I'm sure such options will be included, which is why I was wondering on the difficulty: I'm pretty good at inventing tables, ...
  • 03:18 AM - Artur Hawkwing quoted Morrus in post EN World KickStarter - Issues?
The reason we could do that for just $25 is because we'd be having illos of NPCs done for the AP anyway, so it isn't that much of a stretch to have a backer describe them. The image is essentially subsidized by adventure path funds we have to spend whether or not a backer describes the NPC! If they were just custom illos of characters we weren't going to do anyway, we could certainly do that, but it would cost drastically more. And that was just for head shots; full body would be even more. So in short - yes, we can do that. But how much would you pay for it? The numbers have to work! :) Good point. I'm still curious, just for my own knowledge, what such a venture's average price would be. I'll keep eyes and ears open, in case you have a need for another NPC or two. I'll revisit Kickstarter again once I get paid for the last couple of weeks.

  • 10:45 PM - Roland55 quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
Wow! I think I have Paizo to thank for a boost last night! If any of you get their newsletter, they included the following, very kind words: "Also, while I have your attention, I wanted to let you know about a very worthy Kickstarter that has nothing directly to do with Paizo or Goblinworks. Our friend Morrus, who owns and runs ENWorld, has a Kickstarter running right now to help him rebuild ENWorld. Last month, EN World was attacked by some sophisticated hackers who destroyed much of what Morrus and the gaming community have built over the last decade. Since EN World isn't funded by a large company but rather by Morrus's own pocketbook plus contributions from his community, the economic hill of paying for the restoration of EN World almost brought this RPG gaming website to its knees. But instead of giving in, Morrus is fighting back, and this Kickstarter is a way for those of us who believe in the benefits that EN World brings to our favorite hobby to give a little back. If you can, please help Morrus ; every little bit will help him bring ENWorld further from the brink of death." Just saw this, myself. Been catching up after being away. I'm sure it was a big help. If I hadn't noticed the kickstarter here, I'd have seen it there.

Eeek. I can't do anything about Kickstarter.com, unfortunately. What I am going to do, though is add a separate PayPal option for those who can't use Kickstarter for whatever reason. It is funny as I have KickStarted on 5 projects and this is the only one that I have an issue with, must be the crossing of the pond.
  • 03:35 PM - Thanee quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
I am still waiting to hear something about the dice (I've asked both Artisan Dice and Q-Workshop); I hope to hear back soon about another cool reward that a large publisher is considering offering. If that doesn't work out, Chessex US also makes custom dice. I have used that service for myself already. Worked really well. :) Bye Thanee
  • 02:46 AM - GX.Sigma quoted Morrus in post The REBUILDING EN WORLD Kickstarter Project
@MerricB - I do worry that the £ will discourage folks outside the UK (which is, to be fair, most people). I had no choice in that though - Kickstarter policy is that it has to be in the currency of the creator's location. I think the stuff at each level is getting a little confusing, so I quickly whipped together this infographic for the £25 PDF reward level. It's a pretty sweet bundle! https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/342/048/059c3634360e4561d8e2d77c969c4cf0_large.jpg?1358380991 ...Okay, you've convinced me. I'm bumping up my pledge from the £10 to the £25 level. :D
