It seems like it would be very unlikely that you could circle the ship with the vehicle without being detected. The terrain is rough, but it is not that rough, and even if you could evade the eyes of any sentries outside there is a chance that anyone sitting in the bridge might spot you. The two most obvious choices now seem either to proceed on foot to avoid detection, which carries with it the...

As you maneuver around the dust storm that you had seen from the ship earlier picks up a bit, obscuring your vision a bit. Fortunately it does not appear strong enough to obscure the trail of the other vehicle, however. Less fortunately the sands of Pan do not taste any better than the sands of the Pact Worlds, as you can feel it on your tongue after speaking. You continue you on for a while,...

Thanks. Now that everyone is posted in the RG I will probably go through them with a fine toothed comb at some point, like Monday or Tuesday. I just have some stuff going on this weekend which will not necessarily stop me from posting but will just make me less eager for the busywork aspects of DMing.

The bandits do not appear to have any sort of regular markings to indicate association with a mercenary group or paramilitary outfit. There is nothing particular special about the vesk, though he seems to favour his size. As a vesk yourself you would be more finely attuned to when a vesk has one of those faces that begs for a fist to be planted in it. This guy definitely has that going on.

Tangentially I wonder how normal play is differentiated from irregular play in various systems. We can ask if certain play styles become more prevalent in chat or PbP games. And I wonder if there is any meaningful way to play solo other than as a murderhobo (maybe as a novelist, I suppose).

Zyzzy revs up the buggy and once everyone has climbed on board she immediately backs up, shifts into forward, then gets moving following the same path out of town that the other vehicle had taken. The flattened dirt 'streets' of town with tufts of scruffy blue grass growing around the edges of buildings quickly transitions into wide open tracts of rough land, dotted with grasses and other plants...

While it has been mentioned that the game and/or DMs sometimes fail to reward non-combat solutions I think this kinda sidesteps the main issue: that for many characters the main form of advancement is getting better killing things and that for all characters advancement means de facto getting better at killing things. And in D&D and Pathfinder at least any class that lacks plentiful skills or...

Were I in school today I think I would have more fun (or even more fun?) with the trolley problem than I did back when. I think people forget that the people at risk can have interpersonal relationships, not just characteristics or numbers. Like if the trolley is hurtling towards one person and you could switch tracks so it would hit four people that seems like a non-issue - you let the one die....

Colonies and colonialism explicitly exist in many RPG settings, but I think the original framing of a "colonialist massacre of women and children" is a complete mischaracterization of what work "colonial" actually does. It does not really do any moral work in most situations. A "colonialist massacre" must necessarily be contrasted to a "non-colonialist massacre" and thinking there is some sort...

She eyes the sofa with a piercing gaze; if this was the spirit of Roderick, she might be forced to use her magic to disrupt him. But she was also wary of the sound being a lure - she knew a spell that could produce the same effect.

I do not know if you guys have a plan for the opening theme too, but it can be important. Western shows typically have music written for them, but when you look at Avatar: The Last Airbender it had the advantage of being able to describe the premise of the entire world, not just the series (the D&D cartoon did as well to a lesser extent). Would anyone be building their characters differently if I added a house rule, that you get maximum resolve regardless of your ability scores? Usually it is half your level rounded down (min 1) plus your key ability score bonus, but I think that kind of discourages more varied character attributes, and I am not sure what could be negatively affected if instead of using your key ability score you...

Well we can see how things work out. If we have more than four people I may have to rethink the initial encounter I had planned a bit but more can have its advantages. I think there will be a hard limit of six though. Even with PbP I think more than that would be biting off more than a basically rookie DM can chew.

If no one else shows interest maybe we give it a go anyway and I can whip up some extras to go along for the ride with you. If anyone else comes up later either we can sub out an extra for their own character or they can just take over playing an extra they like.

I have been messing around a bit building a couple of Starfinder ships recently. I have come across two main issues in this time. One is that the way NPC crews works seems kind of... unsatisfactory. But the one I wanted to ask about more specifically was the relative value of shields versus armour and defences. Which one is more important? Can either of them be dispensed with entirely while...

"What do you want to bet that that was done to keep something in rather than keep anyone like us out?" she says, eyebrows furrowed for a moment. I do not really want to see a rehash of the white walkers. Making the white walkers more competent in that show would just make The Long Night seem that much weirder. I would rather see a series set in the unexamined regions of Essos, maybe with Drogon appearing periodically as a force of nature, or with Arya in Westeresteros. I mean, people complained that Game of Thrones was too white people...

I think AeJon might have been the Prince That Was Promised. He certainly seems to re-enact a version of Azhor Ahai and Lightbringer - stabs his girlfriend, who turns out to have designs similar to the Night King, and gets a "burning sword" in the Iron Throne. He is born of the line said belong to the Prince Who Was Promised, and his parents literally represent fire and ice. He was ever born...

...iggered, leaving only minor protective cantrips as testimonies of domestic concern. Many Owls were killed in a focused, fast and brutal battle. The force that passed through was the real threat, apparently. Arduniel meets the diseased. Now, they are fully recovered. All three tainted heroes, plus Allanor, are here. They felt they had to move towards the castle with all urgency, seeking out a tome held by the Priestess - they dreamed about it, or so they say. They're kept on a short leash, though: they attacked everyone and everything on sight as they arrived. Inside, the ruins aren't terribly different. The only true distinction appears on the back rooms, where the Priestess kept her altar: the sanctuary spell fell, the room's been ravaged and the priestess vanished. No one remains, except the dead - both drow and owls. The faint presence of a couple of teleportation spells remain in the air, marks on the floor denouncing it. ...ghtening amount of magical statues and idols around the studios and tents. As he expected, most of them portray the ancestor’s cult, typical of the Fey. Still, a few statues translate the new elfic patheon, something represented by the Priestess’ practices around Alessia. Some of the statues have been enchanted to create emotional reactions on the worshippers – from fear to comfort. Others have been prepared as fertility charms, or simply as pieces to harness magical forces. Some have also been prepared to house natural spirits, while others have been made to become funeral icons. The ones that interest Daxio the most, though, are those that have been destroyed. They held language and illusion enchantments, preserving messages and tales delivered by the Lyllend as prophecies. He seeks out for any other pieces of information, but it seems that most of the studios were destroyed, along with their owners... The Isles' fires have been kept under control. 10) The Specters' and fugitive Knights' lead is still recent. They can still be investigated, even though teleportation might have limited the reach for results. Ok, whenever we have larger happenstances and you are released from direct engagements, I'll coordinate things like this: you can individually give me one or more complex actions to peform - e.g. helping put a fire down, investigate a scene, capture enemies, and so on. I'll ask for the appropriate skill tests - if any are necessary - and present the results according to rolls or choices. Each 'mini-downtime' will allow for a certain number of actions, which I'll place before we begin. Ok, you have time for one complex action each. Even though the forces focused on their eastern attack, the area lacks any solid barriers or frontiers. More might be hidden - after all, it's in their nature to act in secrecy. The very nature of the situation confuses Moss. why would they waste their forces in such a disastrous attack? After the task is done, the conflicts die out. Here and there, the hash consequences of the battle still mark the horizon. Suddenly, the encampment's met with a commotion. The dragon sees it from the distance: someone got caught and is taken to a central hub amidst the tents - probably to be harshly dealt with. A line of Green Knights returns from the caves, riding West at full speed. At the top of the Spiral Tower, a group of gryphon riders dives towards North. @KahlessNestor @Charlotte of Oz @MetaVoid @Shayuri @Kaodi @Neurotic ALESSIA MAP https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...bytTJV_v4/edit AREA MAP https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...I4iFKlwNU/edit

Clearly they understand this battle to be over. Others find their way under the green canopies as well. Whatever hit both tower and castle mustered an impressive amount of strength, something not displayed at all during the fight in front of the caves. [Ok, you have the knights under custody, two riders to help and Moss doing the area's recon. Both castle and tower suffered greatly. The planes before the caves are bloody and fiery, but the battle is over. The living quarters are basically safe. You can still pursue the last remnant of the armies, go to the caves and help the Green Knights and their allies or visit the other parts of the city. The knights simply gesture towards the weapons, stepping away from them to reassure that they have no intention of challenging their captor's commands. As they step back, the darkness above begins to rescind, giving place to the original colors of the sun, so very slowly. The lady knight smiles faintly in response to this. The male glances up and smiles as well. "The Avatar of Darkness, Countess Bakkdur, departs. The sun will shine once more as soon as she's gone." - she glances at Bruekk now. • 12:13 AM - Riley37 quoted Kaodi in post Why are we okay with violence in RPGs?
While it has been mentioned that the game and/or DMs sometimes fail to reward non-combat solutions I think this kinda sidesteps the main issue: that for many characters the main form of advancement is getting better killing things and that for all characters advancement means de facto getting better at killing things. And in D&D and Pathfinder at least any class that lacks plentiful skills or magic is going to be extremely sub-optimal in a game with minimal violence. Violence is baked into these systems from top to bottom; they are designed for it. If by "these systems" you mean D&D and Pathfinder, then mostly yes. Though at various points in the last four decades, some people have worked, within those systems, in other directions. Scholar or diplomat as a playable class, for example. 5E D&D recognizes combat as one of three pillars. Combat is the pillar with the most, and most detailed, mechanical support. In 5E, a character who gains levels necessarily gains HP, which are strongly releva...

The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. But that is only one out of five major skills, and the other four are expected to be just as valuable in getting through to the conclusion of an adventure - and in fights it is generally assumed the PCS are not using firearms, and are knocking out bad guys instead of killing them. There are FATE variants that put intelle...

Colonies and colonialism explicitly exist in many RPG settings, but I think the original framing of a "colonialist massacre of women and children" is a complete mischaracterization of what work "colonial" actually does. It does not really do any moral work in most situations. A "colonialist massacre" must necessarily be contrasted to a "non-colonialist massacre" and thinking there is some sort of moral difference between them is as foolish as thinking there is a meaningful difference between a French massacre of women and children and an English massacre of women and children. As well colonialism is not a particularly good description of most violence games like D&D, at least insofar as it does not match up with what "colony" actually means. Territorial violence in D&D tends to be more basic expansionary violence. It can only be described as "colonial" to the extent that "colonial" killed "expansionary" and took its stuff. ... is that really the point you felt necessary to make? That, and...

  • 08:54 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
This does not quite make sense to me. For them to "detect" the light falling towards the centre some would still have to escape towards them, would it not? Nope. They are just inside the event horizon, looking out. Photons from outside are falling in at them - they can detect those. There will be some warping of the field of view, but the event horizon does not present a discontinuity. If you are just outside the event horizon, looking around, and then step just inside, the world will look much the same. But the "event horizon" should not really be a singular place, should it? Once you are inside it is basically event horizons all the way down, is it not? If light cannot escape at x distance then there is no way it can escape at x - n distance. Pretty much, yes. The event horizon is the *outermost* such position. Which means you can always see things that are farther out from the singularity than you are. You can't look *inwards* and see anything. You always seem to be ...
  • 06:29 PM - Jer quoted Kaodi in post Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?
Since others have pointed out half of an answer to your question, I'll try my hand at the other half: But could there still have been room in particular for a submission based adventure anthology like Dungeon was, or would that have just required too much manpower to maintain the quality they desired? As far as a submission based adventure anthology goes - I think the OGL model kind of killed it. Without the D&D branding what do you have? A curated selection of short d20 adventures. Which you could get at the time from a variety of different publishers as standalone products rather than monthly adventures. Plus who could ever use all of those adventures? I still have shelves of Dungeon magazine short adventures that I've wanted to run but have never had the opportunity to. So I could see why they would go in on the "Pathfinder Adventure Path" subscription model and not the anthology of short adventures model - plus at the time it felt like the "Adventure Path" idea was the exc...

If light cannot escape at x distance then there is no way it can escape at x - n distance. It's not escaping towards them, they are inside the event horizon so light is falling over them like water in a shower on its way deeper into the hole. The event horizon is the surface of a sphere some distance from the singularity point (the more massive the hole, the farther the surface of the sphere from centre of mass). Nothing is really there other than gravity at sufficient force levels that light can't escape.
  • 04:16 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
But the fact that they can "see" what is going on inside the black hole is super dumb: if their sensors can accomplish that inside the black hole they should be able to accomplish it outside. Nope. That part is pretty much okay. Light falling in to a black hole does not *stop* at the event horizon. It falls in, and could be detected on the inside. Okay, technically it gets blue-shifted to gamma rays on the way in, but that's the *least* of the problems with the black hole bit. The fact that they made such a point about the intense pressure under seven miles of ocean made ignoring the pressure from inside a black hole even that much more painful to stomach. There isn't any particular pressure inside a black hole. It is still a vacuum, for one thing. And the space inside the event horizon is just like the space outside it. The curvature increases as you head toward the singularity, but there's no discontinuity at the event horizon that suddenly increases pressure.

  • 07:58 PM - MacConnell quoted Kaodi in post How to better PBP - a controversial suggestion (all systems)
...A piece of common wisdom I see here is to recruit large groups... I have found that the same few people seem to respond to all requests despite the number of available members on this site. I have also observed that unless the offer is from 5e or PF it will get no traffic. ...And in PBP, almost every day is a "session" - it's a game you devote a few minutes every day instead of a big session every week or 2... The application of play has to be adjusted to the PbP setting. This is the burden of the GM / DM. In video game versions like Neverwinter Nights, bingers can elevate characters 10 levels or more in a single sitting, even with the mechanics changed to award about 1% of the usual XP of a table-top session. In a PbP, I have found that the offer needs to be increased. I tend to offer XP once a week or once every ten posts, depending on the participation of players. This seems to fix the sigma that characters are never going to advance since a single combat can take more than a week ...

Oh yeah, I also tend to think the Dothraki charge was dumb. In real life, as far as I know, much of the power of cavalry charges come from its ability to break lines through a combination of fear and momentum. The Dothraki charged headlong into a literally *wall* of undead, and the only thing that accomplishes is being surrounded by zombies and quickly dying to their counterattack. They should not have even attempted that without knowing what the enemy battle lines actually looked like. Heavy Cavalry would smash into the lines to break them. Light cavalry like the Dothraki would be used to hit the flanks of the enemy and peel away, harry retreating foes, or to screen and allow your troops to retreat. All of those depend on knowing exactly where the enemy is.

I am generally happy after the finale but the space battle was all kinds of weird. I certainly like how they addressed the fact that Spock's sister is never ever mentioned ever again, but also that Michael planted the idea that he needed someone like Kirk. I have never seen all of TOS but it would be interesting to watch trying to keep Discovery's exposition on Spock's past in mind, and also the other movies and shows where Spock and Sarek show up. It also makes Amanda's death in the reboot more intense, because Spock has already had to say goodbye forever to someone loved. Everyone says she's referring to Kirk, and that might be the intention, but I am really thinking of McCoy. Because he's very emotional.

  • 11:45 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post Playing With Collectively "Owned" Characters
The glacial pace of PbP had me thinking about an idea (probably not original) that I thought it would perhaps be better to discuss here rather than just in the PbP Forums: what if players did not "own" their characters per se, and anyone could play any character? In a PbP environment that could probably be augmented with "at any time"... I suspect that the game would then become dominated by the folks who sit at their computers for long periods each day, with spare time ready and able to post, and those who don't have the availability will be marginalized as players. The marginalized players will not feel much more connection to the game, and will drop away.

I like watching this show and it appears and feels good but at the same time the show is kinda garbage because time travel is garbage and it just does not make any sense to me that twenty five years before TOS a tiny subset of Starfleet created a piece of tech VASTLY more powerful than most of the things in ANY ST series and merely the size of a small exosuit. Like, Temporal Starfleet is supposed to be some 29th Century :):):):), right? But unlike with the Spore Drive, there is absolutely no supporting information or storyline about why it works. Like, how is a Time Crystal formed? How do you "mine" it? How does it allow space travel possibly faster than warp 10 and dampen that inertia? How does the suit provide sustenance to the wearer? How is all of this tech so miniaturized? One thing to bear in mind is that the first thing the suit did was travel into the far future. A lot of its other functions may have been added later, based upon technologies that Dr Burnham found there.

In a PbP game I am in here on the boards the prospect has been raised of trying and sentencing two drow. While I do not expect length of sentence will be an issue in this particular trial it did make me think: how do you sentence people justly when different races have radically different lifespans? Does it really matter what your races life expectancy is if you get sentenced to work in the silver mine?
