There were two tactical semi-auto pistols and one hunting rifle, the latter of which came with an extra clip of ammo, as well as an mk i frag grenade. The pistol you grabbed had eight rounds left, the other one had seven, and the rifle had five (plus the six from the extra clip). They were not wearing armour of any kind, just environmental clothing.

There was a video with a couple of Paizo guys flipping through the pages of the Core Rulebook. I wonder if that is where the transcriptions came from, because if you are watching it in high resolution I think could probably basically read those pages.

"Are you going to kill me or not?" your prisoner asks flatly after a few moments. "I knew there was something wrong with that filter scum, she seemed a little too interested in that chromejob Cannister. She was always harsh, but I did not think she would sell any of us up the space lane so quickly..." she says trailing off. In any case Skitter is able to punch in a few things on his arm and...

Shendra goes absolutely still for about the space of a second, her eyes closing, and then she lets go of her spear and moves to unsling her crossbow. Her hand reaches towards her supply of bolts and only then do her eyes open as she places it in the groove and then quickly turns the crank to draw the string back.

Transferring ships functions to your custom rig takes a bit of doing but you appear to have been at least mostly successful. You were not, however, able to cut off other potential users from access to the controls. So what you do can still possibly be circumvented by other users with root access. "That psycho and her pet android too," growls Gistanne through gritted teeth.

The woman gives you brief dirty look at the implied mockery before shaking her head. "Everything but the power core," she answers. From there it is simply enough to switch the lights in the bay on, and they flicker to life in distinct stages. The bay is large, as you would expect...

What work does "urban" actually do in "urban fantasy" ? A city is mostly a place where rural fantasy traditions congregate and mix. The system should only ever be described as modern or contemporary fantasy. The "urban" is merely a setting.

Leaving the buggy in a spot where it has some protection from line of sight you take a circuitous route around the perimeter of the ship to avoid being seen. As you approach you get a better picture of what is going on: the ship is not sitting on any landing gear, or if it is, it has been partially buried by time and sand. As such there is not much room to approach from 'behind' the ramp, though...

I would rather you not switch mods at this point, but I think your drone can probably identify potential combatants and do some counting. Whether it relays that by scratching marks into the sand or waving its arms is up to you. Once you give Sparky the command he nods once after a pause and then skitters off. Some time later he returns and indicates that he counts four outside the ship.

The force that passed through was the real threat, apparently. Arduniel meets the diseased. Now, they are fully recovered. All three tainted heroes, plus Allanor, are here. They felt they had to move towards the castle with all urgency, seeking out a tome held by the Priestess - they dreamed about it, or so they say. They're kept on a short leash, though: they attacked everyone and everything on sight as they arrived. Inside, the ruins aren't terribly different. The only true distinction appears on the back rooms, where the Priestess kept her altar: the sanctuary spell fell, the room's been ravaged and the priestess vanished. No one remains, except the dead - both drow and owls. The faint presence of a couple of teleportation spells remain in the air, marks on the floor denouncing it. Still, a few statues translate the new elfic patheon, something represented by the Priestess’ practices around Alessia. Some of the statues have been enchanted to create emotional reactions on the worshippers – from fear to comfort. Others have been prepared as fertility charms, or simply as pieces to harness magical forces. Some have also been prepared to house natural spirits, while others have been made to become funeral icons. The ones that interest Daxio the most, though, are those that have been destroyed. They held language and illusion enchantments, preserving messages and tales delivered by the Lyllend as prophecies. He seeks out for any other pieces of information, but it seems that most of the studios were destroyed, along with their owners... Even though the forces focused on their eastern attack, the area lacks any solid barriers or frontiers. More might be hidden - after all, it's in their nature to act in secrecy. The very nature of the situation confuses Moss. why would they waste their forces in such a disastrous attack? After the task is done, the conflicts die out. Here and there, the hash consequences of the battle still mark the horizon. Suddenly, the encampment's met with a commotion. The dragon sees it from the distance: someone got caught and is taken to a central hub amidst the tents - probably to be harshly dealt with. Besides, it feels a lot more natural to just have the caster respond to the spell - it gives a Lord of the Rings feel to the thing as magical powers clash - or Masters of Magick, with the neon pellets and the shapeshifting, if you're into that. :p] Charlotte of Oz, an explanation: since you've given me an action for Alice's analysis, I considered a bonus for the roll. But as the attacks get more precise, they also pay a heavy price on strength, and the damage he causes falls because of it! [Knight 2 attacks Arduniel twice with the lance. He nearly misses the plunge, and swinging to the side right after drawing blood, manages to crush the Dragon against the dirt! • 03:58 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post The urban fantasy market seems awfully stagnant
What work does "urban" actually do in "urban fantasy" ? A city is mostly a place where rural fantasy traditions congregate and mix. The system should only ever be described as modern or contemporary fantasy. The "urban" is merely a setting. The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things are present. Same with Urban Fantasy - yes, you can play such a game in a rural setting as well, but you have to make affordances when you do that, which most of the genre that uses the urban trope does not have to make.

In Mage: The Ascension they are, but not in Mage: The Awakening.Yes, but my overall argument was aimed at every iteration of World of Darkness. Mage: The Awakening has an entirely different set of baggage. I believe the Mage Chroniclers' Guide attempted to provide alternative options, but providing options isn't really the intent of the games as a whole. They're married to very specific settings with specific themes and don't invest much in alternative settings. A number of their creative choices I don't agree with. For example, I've never liked how either has dealt with ghosts and similar. The penumbra/twilight is a headache (I much prefer The Everlasting's simplified "reverie" concept) and the CoD/GMC 2e flowcharts are another headache. There are tons of things I could criticize, but one point I think of pertinence would be that spirits are treated as subject to our conceptions of space-time despite being defined by a lack of corporeality. There are rare situations where this isn't the ca...

  • 12:13 AM - Riley37 quoted Kaodi in post Why are we okay with violence in RPGs?
While it has been mentioned that the game and/or DMs sometimes fail to reward non-combat solutions I think this kinda sidesteps the main issue: that for many characters the main form of advancement is getting better killing things and that for all characters advancement means de facto getting better at killing things. And in D&D and Pathfinder at least any class that lacks plentiful skills or magic is going to be extremely sub-optimal in a game with minimal violence. Violence is baked into these systems from top to bottom; they are designed for it. If by "these systems" you mean D&D and Pathfinder, then mostly yes. Though at various points in the last four decades, some people have worked, within those systems, in other directions. Scholar or diplomat as a playable class, for example. 5E D&D recognizes combat as one of three pillars. Combat is the pillar with the most, and most detailed, mechanical support. In 5E, a character who gains levels necessarily gains HP, which are strongly releva...

The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. But that is only one out of five major skills, and the other four are expected to be just as valuable in getting through to the conclusion of an adventure - and in fights it is generally assumed the PCS are not using firearms, and are knocking out bad guys instead of killing them. There are FATE variants that put intelle...

Colonies and colonialism explicitly exist in many RPG settings, but I think the original framing of a "colonialist massacre of women and children" is a complete mischaracterization of what work "colonial" actually does. It does not really do any moral work in most situations. A "colonialist massacre" must necessarily be contrasted to a "non-colonialist massacre" and thinking there is some sort of moral difference between them is as foolish as thinking there is a meaningful difference between a French massacre of women and children and an English massacre of women and children. As well colonialism is not a particularly good description of most violence games like D&D, at least insofar as it does not match up with what "colony" actually means. Territorial violence in D&D tends to be more basic expansionary violence. It can only be described as "colonial" to the extent that "colonial" killed "expansionary" and took its stuff. ... is that really the point you felt necessary to make? That, and...

  • 08:54 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
This does not quite make sense to me. For them to "detect" the light falling towards the centre some would still have to escape towards them, would it not? Nope. They are just inside the event horizon, looking out. Photons from outside are falling in at them - they can detect those. There will be some warping of the field of view, but the event horizon does not present a discontinuity. If you are just outside the event horizon, looking around, and then step just inside, the world will look much the same. But the "event horizon" should not really be a singular place, should it? Once you are inside it is basically event horizons all the way down, is it not? If light cannot escape at x distance then there is no way it can escape at x - n distance. Pretty much, yes. The event horizon is the *outermost* such position. Which means you can always see things that are farther out from the singularity than you are. You can't look *inwards* and see anything. You always seem to be ...
  • 06:29 PM - Jer quoted Kaodi in post Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?
Since others have pointed out half of an answer to your question, I'll try my hand at the other half: But could there still have been room in particular for a submission based adventure anthology like Dungeon was, or would that have just required too much manpower to maintain the quality they desired? As far as a submission based adventure anthology goes - I think the OGL model kind of killed it. Without the D&D branding what do you have? A curated selection of short d20 adventures. Which you could get at the time from a variety of different publishers as standalone products rather than monthly adventures. Plus who could ever use all of those adventures? I still have shelves of Dungeon magazine short adventures that I've wanted to run but have never had the opportunity to. So I could see why they would go in on the "Pathfinder Adventure Path" subscription model and not the anthology of short adventures model - plus at the time it felt like the "Adventure Path" idea was the exc...

If light cannot escape at x distance then there is no way it can escape at x - n distance. It's not escaping towards them, they are inside the event horizon so light is falling over them like water in a shower on its way deeper into the hole. The event horizon is the surface of a sphere some distance from the singularity point (the more massive the hole, the farther the surface of the sphere from centre of mass). Nothing is really there other than gravity at sufficient force levels that light can't escape.
  • 04:16 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
But the fact that they can "see" what is going on inside the black hole is super dumb: if their sensors can accomplish that inside the black hole they should be able to accomplish it outside. Nope. That part is pretty much okay. Light falling in to a black hole does not *stop* at the event horizon. It falls in, and could be detected on the inside. Okay, technically it gets blue-shifted to gamma rays on the way in, but that's the *least* of the problems with the black hole bit. The fact that they made such a point about the intense pressure under seven miles of ocean made ignoring the pressure from inside a black hole even that much more painful to stomach. There isn't any particular pressure inside a black hole. It is still a vacuum, for one thing. And the space inside the event horizon is just like the space outside it. The curvature increases as you head toward the singularity, but there's no discontinuity at the event horizon that suddenly increases pressure.

...A piece of common wisdom I see here is to recruit large groups... I have found that the same few people seem to respond to all requests despite the number of available members on this site. I have also observed that unless the offer is from 5e or PF it will get no traffic. ...And in PBP, almost every day is a "session" - it's a game you devote a few minutes every day instead of a big session every week or 2... The application of play has to be adjusted to the PbP setting. This is the burden of the GM / DM. In video game versions like Neverwinter Nights, bingers can elevate characters 10 levels or more in a single sitting, even with the mechanics changed to award about 1% of the usual XP of a table-top session. In a PbP, I have found that the offer needs to be increased. I tend to offer XP once a week or once every ten posts, depending on the participation of players. This seems to fix the sigma that characters are never going to advance since a single combat can take more than a week ...

Oh yeah, I also tend to think the Dothraki charge was dumb. In real life, as far as I know, much of the power of cavalry charges come from its ability to break lines through a combination of fear and momentum. The Dothraki charged headlong into a literally *wall* of undead, and the only thing that accomplishes is being surrounded by zombies and quickly dying to their counterattack. They should not have even attempted that without knowing what the enemy battle lines actually looked like. Heavy Cavalry would smash into the lines to break them. Light cavalry like the Dothraki would be used to hit the flanks of the enemy and peel away, harry retreating foes, or to screen and allow your troops to retreat. All of those depend on knowing exactly where the enemy is.

I am generally happy after the finale but the space battle was all kinds of weird. I certainly like how they addressed the fact that Spock's sister is never ever mentioned ever again, but also that Michael planted the idea that he needed someone like Kirk. I have never seen all of TOS but it would be interesting to watch trying to keep Discovery's exposition on Spock's past in mind, and also the other movies and shows where Spock and Sarek show up. It also makes Amanda's death in the reboot more intense, because Spock has already had to say goodbye forever to someone loved. Everyone says she's referring to Kirk, and that might be the intention, but I am really thinking of McCoy. Because he's very emotional.

  • 11:45 PM - Umbran quoted Kaodi in post Playing With Collectively "Owned" Characters
The glacial pace of PbP had me thinking about an idea (probably not original) that I thought it would perhaps be better to discuss here rather than just in the PbP Forums: what if players did not "own" their characters per se, and anyone could play any character? In a PbP environment that could probably be augmented with "at any time"... I suspect that the game would then become dominated by the folks who sit at their computers for long periods each day, with spare time ready and able to post, and those who don't have the availability will be marginalized as players. The marginalized players will not feel much more connection to the game, and will drop away.
