There was the Theologian (EN5ider article Volumes of Forgotten Lore: Divine, by Ari Marmell, Mouseferatu here). I can't access this at the moment, but this is what I thought of. :)

I would be interested in looking at your homebrews. Connor has some good stuff on his site. I like the new skill proficiencies and the breakdown of games, instruments, vehicles, and weapon groups. There are some nice additions to the lists (while I am thinking of it, Connorsrpg, the weapon groups link on the proficiencies page is broken).

Connorsrpg: I think you're experiencing a side effect of MCG not having official boards. The installed base is there (hence the kickstarter backer number), but is kind of a diaspora. Google+ and Facebook's communities are the most active. Even in the hostile (to Cypher System, among others) territory of rpg dot net, there are occasional bursts of activity. ENWorld does help our scattered community as an unofficial news board, which has been a boon, but those of us interested in your posts might miss them because we're not necessarily going to the regular message boards.

@Morris, thank you for your insightful business-oriented explanation. #senpainoticedme @Connorsrpg, my personal rationale for focusing on free products is the development and support of self-publishers in this industry. Reviews are free promotions, and people who offer quality products for free (for whatever reason) deserve good attention. If every self-publisher reviewed three products for every one they output, each product on the DM's guild would have on average three reviews. I have invited anybody in this thread and community to likewise submit their reviews to help stimulate that mindset.

I think the two solutions can be merged. I agree that different gods should have different spell lists. Why would the god of famine and plague grant create food and water and cure disease? etc. A DM could easily create or modify a domain to swap out some core cleric spells for more thematic ones, and I intend to do this for my next campaign to make the gods more unique and flavorful. @Connorsrpg's idea of building a completely custom list sounds cool for players who like fiddling with such things. There's already a Cleric in the PHB that can cast fireball, so it probably won't be too broken (theoretically, they should build for the concept and not minmax, but these are gamers we're talking about). If the player is willing to do the extra homework, I would definitely give them the option. I have some specific questions and comments, though: Full divine casters (clerics & druids) can have spell lists with the following number of spells: 12 for spell levels 1-3...Does this mean they have 12 level 1 spells, 12 level 2 spells, and 12 level 3 spells? Or does it mean they can have (for example) 4 level 1 spells, 4 level 2 spells, and 4 level 3 spells? I'm guessing the latter. That seems like it would get weird if you only know 4 1st-level spells, since a typical 1st-level cleric can prepare 4 spells, and a 2nd-level cleric can prepare 5 (the maximum possible being 6 and 7 respecti...

  • 11:46 PM - Mark Kernow mentioned Connorsrpg in post The Best of EN5ider?
@Josh Gentry - Love your paladin article. I've just had a new player join my online Primeval Thule campaign* who wants to play a paladin. Unfortunately Thule is an ancient rather than medieval world, where chivalry has yet to be invented. But your 'Oath of the Purge' and 'Oath of Supremacy' would make his character a better fit with the campaign, so I'm going to encourage him to look at them. They would work great with a 'Holy Slayer' narrative (a kind of Thule version of a background). If he goes with one of them, I'll be sure to feed back! @Connorsrpg - An article on flaws sounds interesting, can you give a brief example? *For more on Thule, see http://www.sasquatchgamestudio.com/primeval-thule-in-seven-sentences/

Connorsrpg. Hey I just started looking at your website - really awesome stuff! This is for another thread but I'm gonna hit you up after I've had a chance to go through some of your classes and ask how they're working for you. At first glance I love all of your fighter subclasses. Really cool work.

My advice inchoroi, is put in the dollar, and get a look see; if you want to see more stuff like it, adjust your patronage to what you can afford that seems fair. Regardless of what you pay or don't pay, Russ can only publish with the resources we give him! All the more reason to tell a friend! Connorsrpg, great article, I've been looking forward to something like it for a while now. Only suggestion was if we had seen two tables, one with sample weapons using only the basic properties, and a second table that was basically the same as the one in the article, with all the special properties. It's more a matter of convenience than anything, just seeing how the first properties as you note fit more the philosophy behind 5e, and the 2nd batch of abilities is more abstract and involved, but still cool.

Connorsrpg: Wow! I said most not all. Why do you even consider yourself in that category that I mentioned? Such fire back at me when it wasn't even directed at you...shucks. By the way, what else do you have at 5/5? Just curious. I'm not liberal with my ratings and if Dungeon World core gets a 4.5 from me, no way I would rate DMG a 4.5 much less a 5. Unless you consider DMG on par with Dungeon World core book (or Fiasco or Hillfolk).

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the new playtest package just made this more viable. I'm even thinking it would be pretty easy to make "secondary classes" (ranger, bard, assassin, sorcerer, etc) using the core four as basic templates. Connorsrpg, I'll definitely be checking your playtest out as I was thinking of doing the exact same thing but didn't want to do the leg-work! Maybe you did some of it already for me? ;)

This sounds awesome. I totally love the Year Zero Engine and have written heaps of extras for it, including adapting it to run Star Wars. Very interested in this, though I am not the most learned on Aliens lore, so would probably rather be a player ;) The core rulebook will have a lot of Alien universe info. And you can always watch Alien and Aliens again. Plus movies like Blade Runner and Outland.

Running page might be good too, though unless there are conditions flying about, its a lot of clicks just for hit points. Pro tip: if you are using a mouse and not touch, you can use the scroll wheel to adjust hp. Hover and scroll.

When you create new monsters are they shared with other users? Is there a way to find creations by other users? Everything you create is local to you. Private. Even the online sync feature is linked to your account and not public. There is no way to share creations at this time.

No logout on my settings page ;) Wondering why I have to logout anyway? Because sometimes people have had issues with chrome not respecting cookies setup before and after the app is installed and a quick logout and login to get a fresh cookie fixed things. Cookies is how the auto login works.

This looks awesome. I created an account, but whenever I open the Encounter Tools a pop up at bottom keeps telling me that it failed to auto-logon, try logging out in Settings, which I cannot do? There should be a logout button in settings, but if not being displayed I'll fix that when I'm back at home in a week. Meanwhile, go to heromuster.com/logout

When I hit save will brownspawn marauder be in my creature/NPC list from then on? Will brown bear still be there and not replaced? Duplicate first. If you edit and save with a new name it will delete the old name record. Also, under settings you can reset to new again, reading everything you did if you want a fresh start.
  • 12:47 AM - Morrus quoted Connorsrpg in post Manage Your Game With RPG Encounters
Do people know if you take a monster's base stats to modify and make your own, when you save is it a new creature (rather than modify the original)? For example. I modify a brown bear (including changing its name) to a brownspawn marauder. When I hit save will brownspawn marauder be in my creature/NPC list from then on? Will brown bear still be there and not replaced? (Not keen to try until I know original will not disappear). I don’t know for sure, but it looks or me like you use the Duplicate button first and then edit your duplicate.

I LOVE this game. I don't really have any of the adventures, as I doubt I will ever got to play them :( I have used the system for our Star Wars games. I agree with the person above that did not like the reroll. I have changed that to 'trusting to the Force' (or course :P) and there are always problems with rolling 1's on these rerolls ;) Thanks for the article. If interested, my Star Wars and other conversions here (under Year Zero Engine in side nav bar): http://connorsscifi.wikidot.com/system:welcome Thanks for sharing!

  • 10:14 PM - IchneumonWasp quoted Connorsrpg in post Pages From The Upcoming Nautical D&D Book!
What I would really like to see are some mini-settings. A mini setting in this book would be pretty cool. (Ravnica was a fantastic mix of what I would like to see going forward. I don't play Magic; I am never likely to run a Ravnica game, but that book was so inspiring as a DM. There is so much in there I want to borrow. One of my favourite 5E books by far. If this is a water setting done the same way, I will be happy). I'd be interested in that as well. It would certainly fit my play style and would allow me to place some location/region right into my game world. And I also completely agree with you about Ravnica. It's a really amazing book if you give it a chance. The factions are really flavourful and easy to adapt.

I also don't really understand the need for 'conversions'. You could run the 1E Saltmarsh series with 5E straight out of the book. Do people really need official DCs for every trap and skill check? A few new stats for sahuagin etc would be very helpful and all you need. The U1-3 (Saltmarsh) modules are fantastic, but I don't need a 5E version of them. That being said, if new players know nothing about them, then this would be an ideal introduction. :) U1-3 have been out of print for many years though, and some people prefer not to use downloads. They also like to have glossy modern presentation.

I wager they found that most people either didn't know they could, or felt intimidated, and then when DMsGuild came along the module specific conversion guides started selling like hot-cakes.

I mean, Tales from the Yawning Portal was rather... appropriately named. However, I could see a nice setup for a campaign that expands things out, making use of the Saltmarsh series as a basis.

  • 11:14 AM - Karma Dragon quoted Connorsrpg in post Paladin Sacred Oath of the Dragon
Not speaking to the 'balance', (I don't care for it too much and I like what you have), but I was hoping for a more general "Oath of the Dragon". This seems very specific to a deity. I would rework the tenants to protecting, working with, and advancing the position of dragons in the world. That way you cover more alignments and can have paladins of Tiamat taking this without having to write up an oath for every deity. I like the idea though. Very cool. Thanks! Modifying the flavor text to make them a paladin devoted to evil dragons and Tiamat is a great idea and easy enough. None of the abilities would need to change. They could be a blackguard with a fiendish chromatic wyrmling companion instead. From a Roleplaying perspective writing tenants for a paladin that could either be good or evil is difficult to do. However, I’m open to suggestions. I’m pretty sure being the guardian of an adventuring wyrmling and raising them to adulthood qualifies as advancing the position of dragons in the wo...
  • 10:50 AM - Infinity Star Games quoted Connorsrpg in post Paladin Sacred Oath of the Dragon
Yeah, I wouldn't punish the paladin if they did everything right, but their dragon dies. I am not in favour of Pokemon styled abilities either. "My dragon died. Nevermind." POOF! "Here is another one." I would simply suggest they have to seek out another. Being without one for a while would be punishment enough. My take on it is if they lose their dragon they remain a paladin of Bahamut but they would need to switch to Devotion or Vengeance after atoning. This subclass could be considered more powerful if protecting the dragon companion and keeping their identity a secret isn’t the player’s primary concern. The risk needs to match the reward.

  • 02:59 PM - amethal quoted Connorsrpg in post Scales of War Adventure Path... How is it?
Main thing I want to know is, is there ANY reason this starts in Brindol? (I'm only getting ties to the Red Hand). But, it looks like the rest takes place outside Elsir Vale? Does any of the rest of the AP actually happen in the Vale itself? Also, I just read first part of Rescue at Rivenroar. I did not see an explanation of HOW the hobgoblins etc got into the city with carts etc to cause this carnage! Brindol is a very well protected town! I think I would use the opening in one of the smaller villages of the vale - especially as it seems you are off out of the Vale anyway. I mean Rivenroar isn't even in there? A long way to be carting prisoners. Why didn't they use a small village and then Bristol as main town instead of this Overwatch? is there something I am missing? It's been a while since I read it, but (apart from the link to the Red Hand, which only applies to the bad guys in the first adventure) there is no reason why it has to be in the Vale at all. From what I remember, the b...

  • 01:09 AM - cbwjm quoted Connorsrpg in post Mearls House Rule: Two-Weapon Fighting
People arguing that this is 'way too complex for 5E'...? I am sure why that is why it did not make the 5E rules set. This is a House Rule Mike is trying out. It is NOT for official 5E. How about we go with that? For certain campaigns, such as those that focus on swashbuckling, I think this would be a fine way to go about dual-wielding. Obviously it is more complex and Mike is likely playing with players that like that, so again, go for it. I like the flexibility of it. Two weapon fighting was often for extra defense, not attacks, so this is cool. No need to wait for feats etc to get the regarded benefit of 2-weapons. I love designers sharing their house rules with us and when people see those house rules for what they are.Mearl's shares a lot of his homebrew content, after watching the happy hour I get the impression that he really enjoys connecting with the player base and sharing his homebrewed content. I'm not sure of everything he's shared but there are at least 2 of his homebrewed cleric...

As a player, railroading is my biggest issue. So that is a problem with these all-encompassing long-term adventure paths. As a DM I can't stick to them either. :( I totally agree. I do like some of the big modules and will steal from them but in general I don't like how on rails they are either as a player or DM.
