Late in 3.5Ed, Illithids were said to be from the future, and had traveled back in time to create the conditions that led to their existence. While time travel may not be a power, it could be some form of magitech. See 12 Monkeys, the TV series as a recent for example:

As a megafan and frequent* HERO player, I eventually made a spreadsheet for making characters. Much like PC creation itself, it was time consuming to set up, but once created, was a breeze. Definitely a time saver when calculating build point costs. I designed mine to show the costs, which is helpful but not necessary. Alas, the program I used stopped being supported by Microsoft a decade +...

For my best campaign ever, I set up the gameworld and designed certain adventures that forwarded the main plot, but I also made a “newsletter” that was essentially the in-house newspaper for the agency the PCs were connected to. I printed out a copy to post on our host’s cork board for all to see. In it, the major storylines described the campaign’s biggest news, centered on the main plot and...

I include the GM as a player for these purposes. If even that person is sitting there looking at the game and not able to understand the magic, that person won’t run the game. People have been throwing around quantum mechanics ideas in this thread, so let me join in. There is an observer effect going on. The act of making a system of magic that works in a game invariably makes the magic...

Well, I personally see the Heavenly Host from Doctor Who as a missed opportunity in that regard. While they are made to look like angels, their faces are mostly fairly masculine, while angels are supposed to be androgynous. So in this case, “the point” would be making them more closely resemble what they are emulating. I could also see androgynous androids as being perceived as less...

In Tahiti it looks like. Just saw a video that floats the idea that Fury died in Winter Soldier, and that activated some stand-in plan for his Skrull buddy to take over. Extra evidence is that when Fury says he can't eat bread that's not been cut in half, there's movie footage of him doing just that, thus, he was a SKrull at that time.

You might want to check that: dwarves could be Clerics, too. (In addition, when the classes were added, they could be alchemists and psionicists as well.) Also, every race had at least one class in which their progression was unlimited. As I recall, that was Thief for dwarves. (Possibly all races.)

I know he’s on ours* and the one at his mom’s**, though I don’t know if he’s set for auto-join. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t on his employer’s system. * he is the one who most recently reset the router. ** he set up his mom’s wi-fi, and she doesn’t have a clue as to how to change that.

I get that...but I’m still at something of a loss, here. We have a pretty good wi-fi system here, and I know he uses it. He has wi-fi at his place of employment. He has wi-fi at his mother’s house. And he’s still gobbling up 2-4x the GB of the other 4 people on the plan. This month, we’ve used a combined 3 of 16GB; he’s at 12 with another couple of days to go.

I use my mobile devices for many hours a day, but I am usually on Wi-Fi. I am part of a group plan, and I typically use between 1-3GB/mo. One person on the plan uses more data than everyone else combined. How does one chew up data like that?

Continual flame/Light would be highly prized: a light source that can’t start a fire is going to be handy when you’re on the water, surrounded by all kinds of flammables. Warding spells against fire would be worth their weight in gold, for that matter. OTOH, Grease could be handy if you WANT to start fires...on someone else’s ship. As I posited elsewhere, an aggressive, expansionist naval...

After being introduced to gaming in 1977, I haven’t played since...2016? 2017? No significant gaps besides this current dry spell. The why? Well, I sort of had a falling out with my game group of 20 or so years about communication. There were other factors as well, but that was the proverbial straw. I haven’t seen any of them in person since December or January. And for a variety of...

Which reminds me... The Bridge is a documentary about the Golden Gate Bridge, in particular, its status as the #1 location in the world for suicides. In the context of a V:tM campaign, that could be prime hunting for a vampire of the right type. Not only as a place to hide their kills, but also as a way to feed guilt free on “willing” victims. (If the vampire has an issue with that, of...

When I was a kid, we visited the ruins of Knossos, the palace of King Minos of Crete. Years later, I photocopied the map from the tourist material onto graph paper to use as a dungeon. I also look at unusual architecture and locales on the internet for locations, like the Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan: Catatumbo Venezuela: Gilroy Gardens:

  • 06:23 AM - nnms mentioned Dannyalcatraz in post Experience Point: Become a Fit-Beard
Dannyalcatraz -That is totally a great technique for paying attention to your food. You can also think about textures as well. Another great technique is to get yourself some whole grain bread and some olive oil (a couple teaspoons at most) and as an appetizer eat the whole grain bread dipped in the olive oil. Wait a couple of minutes after you are done the piece of bread before you put food on your plate. You might notice without any effort that you'll reduce your portion sizes. Another good thing to do is to change which meal is the largest of each day to be breakfast. At the very least, never, ever skip it: http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20090615/skip-breakfast-get-fat

Well I now live in Nashville area With my brother and his fam while I continue to heal. That hit a new low today when the family dog, a 12 lb shitzu mix, jumped on me puttin a paw right on the ostomy of my colostomy. That tissue is always really tender and I was trying to rest while waiting for my pain meds to kick in. I had just got her calmed down when she felt she needed to be petted, so guess what? Yup. right on the same spot. i think I might be able to say I now feel your pain, bud.

  • 11:15 AM - Herzog mentioned Dannyalcatraz in post Looking for assistance creating a backup character
@Dannyalcatraz: Thank you, but no. If I should pick up another PrC it should have full BaB progression in combination with slow spellcasting progression. Also, to both you and @Greenfield, I am staying away from templates. Both because of LA and because of my DM. I am currently looking at builds like Fighter4/Warmage4/AA, Fighter6/Warmage1/AA and even considered for a moment to go Hexblade 6/AA (AFAIK, the shortest route to AA within the allowed books) Fighter6/Warmage1 is currently my favourite (because of the number of feats I can pump into the build) although second level spells (and expanded knowledge at lvl 3) for the warmage look nice too. If only I knew of a must-have first level spell on the sorcerer/wizard Evocation list for Arcane Archers that isn't on the warmage list already...

  • 02:43 PM - Li Shenron mentioned Dannyalcatraz in post Some things I've learned as a journeyman Dungeon Master.
What things have you learned to make you a better story teller? First of all, what Dannyalcatraz wrote: The thing is, they may actually come up with better ideas about the plot than the ones you've already scripted. I they do, and you use it, they feel like they have read your mind, when in reality you're plagiarizing them to their face. I am not afraid of sometimes allowing some bold, over-the-top ideas to work (if you check my playtest report thread of last week, you'll read an example) and that also applies to players throwing guesses on the plot that I haven't planned at all, and making them happen. If you don't want to be too helpful or to make them discover you're using this trick, spin those player-generated ideas with a twist, or add an extra layer of secrets behind their solution. A couple of more things I've learned through the years... You can really improve your descriptions if you keep in mind that they can be based on five senses ;) Don't just describe the visuals, but add one or two at least additional sensory descriptors for each locale: how does it smell? wh...

  • 11:49 AM - Omegaxicor mentioned Dannyalcatraz in post "The aim is for the players to have fun"
@Unwise That sounds like the group I have, they are still good at the game but the role-playing aspect is difficult for them, they stumble from scene to scene, which means we have to have more combat based encounters, which means more chance for the dice to "Hiccup" (rolling consistently low for several rolls) and the party member to die. @Stormonu You have misunderstood, slightly, I don't mind the replacement characters or even players dying, but the players get their replacement "Temporary character" while they are reviving their guy and then forget to revive the character, they just keep playing the replacement until he dies. @pemerton The problem I have there is that they don't respond to their party member's friends and family, I have tried it before, I might try it again though @Dannyalcatraz I misunderstood your meaning, I might try that.
  • 01:28 AM - Omegaxicor mentioned Dannyalcatraz in post "The aim is for the players to have fun"
@SmuggleNutz tried that neither worked... @Majoru Oakheart I agree but I would probably get bored of D&D before I would give up and accept it but if I gave up and accept it then the game will eventually degrade to where the party will be bored and then noone is having fun, obviously you are better at hiding your displeasure than I am :) @Dannyalcatraz I think that that would make as interesting a story for the viewer because Sauron rises up and an army defeats him again just like the first time but the party's adventures are walking in circles looking for this ring and not finding it, dredging the Dead Marshes looking for it :P I think that the issue is 1) the players die too often, I will have to look into that 2) the characters are not valued, which may be because they die a lot or it is their playstyle which might be a problem :(

  • 05:14 PM - Morrus quoted Dannyalcatraz in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
Ship or probe goes in. Gets blown up. Kaylon receive no data on what happened because the action is on the other side of the event horizon. Only if the ship or probe returns, do they get data- prey destroyed or disappeared. I didn’t realise the Kaylons were such scaredy cats!
  • 04:27 PM - Morrus quoted Dannyalcatraz in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
I think the Kaylon didn’t want to waltz into an ambush. They couldn’t see beyond the event horizon, so going in on their prey’s tail would have set them up for taking weapon fire right where it hurt. So just send one ship first. Or even just a probe.

Well, any analogy eventually fails at some point, but I think the U.K. & French thing holds pretty well for purposes of this campaign. I suggest, instead, that the UK, the French and the Germans are all "dwarves", in the sense that they were offered technology which allowed each of them to greedily acquire wealth; at the cost of hubris, moral downfall, the mutual devastations of WWII and the loss of their colonial empires. Dragons devoured "rings" in the London Blitz and the firebombing of Dresden. The "elves" should have no such blood and dirt on their hands. What humans have the least blood and dirt on their hands? They might be a mystical society or tradition other than a nation-state. If they have a homeland, it should be as daunting for normal humans to visit, as Lothlorien or Imladris. Tibet? - Does the Dalai Llama hold one of the Three Rings? - does Tom Bombadil dwell among the "pygmies" of the Ituri? If this were a Gaiman or Moore comic, “the silicon chip inside her head had switched to ...

  • 06:37 PM - Ryujin quoted Dannyalcatraz in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
Mercer still exhibits a whole bunch more “fallibility” across the board than most of the ST captains across the franchise history. The man just did a “flyby” to check on his ex! And the “bumbling”? What bumbling? Again, the pilot has been consistently described as one of the best in the fleet. Others had similar accolades to their credit or unique attributes, including one of the few Xelayans serving on a Union ship and the only Kaylon. They weren’t “bunglers”, just written with their foibles on more prominent display. The verbal jousts, in-jokes and asides we see between several of the characters typically existed only within a single tight pair or trio of friends in a given Trek series- Kirk/Bones/Spock, Bashir/O’Brien, etc.- if at all. Besides, we’ve gotten to focus on the supporting cast a lot this season: multiple Moclan storylines, a necropsy-holoromance, goo-guy done good, family-centric stories for 2 different families, a spy revealed and (seemingly) redeemed, and a cast change...
  • 03:24 PM - quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How much do you care about "balanced" dice?
Beyond the obviously loaded or damaged died out there, I don’t much care. I have a Bucket O’ Dice* to maintain! * Which doesn’t include my “personal” stash. I'm even fine if my players want to use the dreaded "spindown" lifecounter dice you get from games like MTG. Heck, I have one guy who spins a "disc" and then just slaps his finger down on a number. I'd suspect cheating if he didn't roll so poorly! I only require my players to roll out in the open, that's good enough for me. Dropping is also acceptable provided it bounces around a little.
  • 12:30 AM - Ryujin quoted Dannyalcatraz in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
But you’d expect a former command officer on his second go round to not only have a bit of confidence to be able to do his job before, but also have it returning because he’s been on a bit of a roll. At this point, his self-doubt was mostly personal, it seemed to me. As I recall the beginning of season 1 there was a surfeit of ships and a dearth of qualified command officers. On his ex-wife's recommendation Mercer, who was still lacking in confidence, was given command of Orville. In season 2 he is more confident.

  • 02:05 PM - Maxperson quoted Dannyalcatraz in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
I’m struggling to remember- what flaws did he have season 1 that have actually disappeared? Mercer's self-doubt is gone, and they were a bit more bumbling in how they succeeded. They seem more competent this season than they were last season. The friction between Mercer and Grayson is gone, but they explained the cheating as not her fault, so that makes sense. Edit:LaMarr's mouth and Malloy's cockiness are also not getting them into as much trouble this season.

  • 12:30 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
That was a reference to cabers, as was made obvious a little lower down in the quoted section: Yes they do, but they’re not throwing them for combat effectiveness, and the throws are only a couple of feet- nothing at all like the taekwondo demonstrators. Yeeeaaah, okay, man. You’re gonna keep finding any angle you can to view the possible as impossible, and aim just gonna go ahead and walk away from this exchange. However you would normally determine the distance of a long jump using an athletics roll with advantage. The PHB and DMG are silent on how exactly to calculate the jump distance gained by an athletics roll except to say that you can "try to jump an unusually long distance" using the skill. 1d20+StrMod+ProficiencyBonus would be how it would be handled in previous editions, and I think it's reasonable to use that calculation here as well. So it would be that, but with advantage from the guy doing the throw. I’d the thrower’s strength, but sure, otherwise that seems reasonable. I...

  • 05:06 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
No, I didn’t say that objects like that cannot be thrown accurately. Yes, you did. Not missing anything. Odds are extremely good that an object of that mass and those dimensions cannot be thrown with accuracy. As a freely moving weight, it is much harder to control than an identical weight constrained in a framework- see the difference between works out on free weights (dumbbells, kettle bells, etc.) as opposed to weight machines. And going back to the Guinness throwing video, look at the person who was thrown. Did he look like he landed in a way conducive to success in melee? (FWIW, I don’t really believe in “winning” internet discussions, so shelve that concept.) Your argumentation habits in this thread suggest otherwise, to me, but I’ll give benefit of the doubt on intention. Anyway, I’ve addressed the point you’ve raised here several times.

  • 10:07 PM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
When did I say anything about a ball? In any case, yes, it is possible to mis-throw a ball. It happens in every game of baseball, even by the most skilled pitchers. This is not an honest retort. no one said anything about the possibility of missing a throw. You claimed that it’s very likely that such an object (and they are balls. I don’t beleive for a second that you were confused by the word “ball” in reference to the thing being thrown.) cannot he thrown accurately. I challenged the idea that there is any significant chance of that being true. No, I’m not wildly speculating. Lifting a static dead weight like a box or barbell isn’t as difficult as lifting the same mass in motion. In both cases, there is a lot of force being directed downward through the thrower’s spine. But with a mass already in motion, it isn’t all in one direction. There are vectors going in directions that are not straight down. If his or her core isn’t up to it and/or their technique is a bit off, a solo t...
  • 05:52 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
For reference, the throw in that video didn’t get to 25 meters either: 9.39m throw by the current Australian M50 56lb Heavy Weight record holder, Grant Edwards. IOW, a world class athlete- admittedly an older one- couldn’t throw a halfling half the distance you’re talking. um...dude, that’s 30 feet. That’s the outside end of what I’m talking about. I don’t give a damn about “gritty” in this situation- it’s too far for my willing suspension of disbelief. “nitty gritty” and “gritty” mean two different things. Nitty gritty is a reference to “getting into the weeds” on the details of something. I hope that clarifies what I was actually saying, there. As for the rest? Well, I explicitly said I’d allow a fastball special if I thought the thrower was strong enough. Str 15 ain’t it. And I’m OK with a non-combat throw of a certain distance with near-max human- see my disclosure about Fast Eddie. okay, I’m very confused as to why you need to be at the level of the literal strongest people ...
  • 05:05 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
I read the whole thread. IMHO, about the only way a fastball special makes sense as a combat maneuver is in its original iteration- a one handed, baseball-style throw. Any other way takes too much time & space and opens the participants up to easy attacks. Even the Goliath & Halfling example falters- here’s a 56lb Hammer throw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0AgMq7SNkE M50 refers to Masters 50 class- world class hammer throwers between 50-55 years of age. The usual throwing weight is 6kg. Note the use of space and rotation, and the 2-handed grip. Note the distance. Note also the shape of the in-bounds area, implying a certain lack of accuracy. The throw itself took 11 seconds, and started with the thrower with his back to the target area. So, despite the dearth of people discussing the original version of the fastball special, it is still central to my position. So, I’m not sure what about the physical mechanics of throwing weights IRL means that it’s a bad combat maneuver...
  • 04:00 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Dannyalcatraz in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
Late to the party; here’s my 2¢. Here’s a world champion caber tosser in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb0FU8rSisU I note that he’s: 1) taking a lot of time 2) in a very vulnerable position 3) throwing the caber end over end 4) a touch more than its own length 5) not super accurately 6) two handed 7) with a running start Compared to the original Wolverine and Colossus maneuver, that’s terrible for combat. As I recall the original art, both of Wolverine’s feet are usually in one of Colossus’ hands, making it not just a throw, but a one-armed throw. Hence “fastball” and not “hammer throw”. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/7/77/Dark_Reign_The_List_-_X-Men_Vol_1_1_page_14_Fastball_special_%28Earth-616%29.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20091219151122 So I’d basically disallow it until the throwing character was clearly into Str levels beyond that capable of normal, unautmented humanity. Like...able to do a 700lb curl type weight. (Last I checked, the world record for...
