Wow, ninjaed. Didn't see they added PDFs over the weekend. But did get the newsletter that mentioned PDFs being added. I'm backer 755 now, because I said I wasn't because they didn't have PDFs. CrimsonCarcharodon, 77IM, Slighted, Matthan, Azhmodai, Rl'Halsinor, Pravus, Dire Bare, Paragon Lost, Zaukrie, Ghost2020? Did you see? Have you got your pledge in yet?

Thateous Shayuri VLAD the Destroyer Ancalagon tglassy Matthan So sorry about the delay on my end! This time of year I normally go through a crunch with architecture school, but it was compounded by starting a new internship. I'll be getting back to posting again soon, figuring out what rate I can manage with my new schedule. Looking forward to resuming our Al-Qadim game :) Since the old thread subscription notification system we used to have on ENWorld seems indefinitely down, I'm going to get in the habit of tagging you in posts. Feel free to tag me too. If, for any reason, you wish to drop the game or not to be tagged just let me know. ART! I'd need to confer with other players first. We do have a pretty solid group of 6 great players, but I've run for 7 before. We're kinda just getting back into the swing of things. Mea culpa. And thank you Shayuri for reaching out to me!

As I noticed the notifications seem not to be working again, I wanted to politely page everyone VLAD the Destroyer, Ancalagon, Matthan, tglassy, Shayuri, Thateous I believe we're waiting for VLAD? But correct me if I'm mistaken.

Disperse Mirage. Starting at 2nd level, you can use Channel Divinity to cast out illusions and mirages from your sight, even piercing through illusory untruths inflicted upon your allies. As an action, you grant creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you the ability to immediately use their reaction to make an Intelligence (Investigation) check with advantage to determine the nature of any visual illusion within their line of sight. So that would affect you Thateous, as well as VLAD the Destroyer, Matthan, and Ancalagon. It would also affect all NPCs traveling with you currently: Nimar & his 6 rogues & his brother Derafsh & sister Fereshte & Sinjin & Easifa. Sinjin Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1+1 4 Easifa Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1-1 14 *Nimar Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1+1 17 Derafsh Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1+1 4 Fereshte Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1+2 13 Nimar's Rogues Intelligence (Investigation) with advantage: 2d20k1+1 7 (*swapped results with Nimar for better storytelling)

While camping in the wadi (dry riverbed) will provide you with cover from any passing jann patrolling Khaldun oasis, as most of your PCs know, there is the risk of flash flooding should it rain. Thateous Shayuri VLAD the Destroyer Matthan tglassy Ancalagon A DC 15 Wisdom (Survival) check can predict the weather for that night and into the next day. Failing by 5+ would mean drastically misreading the weather patterns (or unnatural weather, such as that caused by genies in the area, fooling you). A DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) or (Nature) check can find a highly defensible location amidst the silt/rock formations of the riverbed. Failing by 5+ would mean stumbling into a random encounter, such as a desert creature or fellow traveler also seeking refuge. And Shayuri, if you decide you want to do recon on Khaldun, make a DC 18 Dexterity (Stealth) check, and we'll play it by ear. If anyone joins you, then make it a group DC 18 Dexterity (Stealth) check.

At the very least, I would like to be made aware that Mr. Webb has attended some form of harassment training from someone not connected to FGG as well as some form of treatment for his drinking. I went into more detail in the thread following ENworld's original reporting on this issue and I sent that message on toward Matt Finch as well. I want to support FGG. I want to back Tome of Horrors (and Rappan Athuk), but I cannot support a company that allows such behavior without appropriate consequences. I am not asking for Mr. Webb to lose his job or position. I am not asking for FGG to have to close their doors. I am merely asking for FGG to take actionable steps towards preventing the type of harassment that happened from happening again. This. I don't have quite the wall of hardcovers that Matthan does, but I've purchased a good number of FGG products, both print and PDF, and I don't know that there is a single campaign of 5e that I've run that hasn't included some content from one of their products. But until I see some actual actions from FGG, I won't be buying any more of their products.

OK Thateous Shayuri VLAD the Destroyer Matthan tglassy Ancalagon do you feel complete at Hakim Oasis? Is there anything further you want to explore/accomplish that night or the following morning? If not, I'll propose that I frame a scene with you camping overnight at the oasis (including Vizier Akilah Thateous disclosing what she learned in conversation with the "Water-Bearer") and then setting forth into the hostile Badu al-Kabir in the morning, to face what awaits you there. I suspect there will be an orienteering decision about whether to approach Khaldun (the oasis of "wicked" jann that the lone jann Usqual al-Shakari warned you of) or to search the windswept Badu al-Kabir on your own for traces of the Brotherhood of True Flame. When you sound off, maybe give me an idea of which direction your PC wants to head in?

  • 05:38 PM - redrick mentioned Matthan in post Is 5e Basically Becoming Pathfinder 2e?
Matthan's advice is the best I see here. Your ad, as it stands, is very generic. To follow that up with a bunch of restrictions could definitely play as a turn-off, even for players who might otherwise fit your play-style. Having read a lot of pitches for campaigns on Roll20 and similar, I've found that the best ads are the ones that pitch a specific kind of game, with the restrictions, alternate rules and house-rules that are put in place to support that. I imagine two very different pitches: "We like to play a stripped down game, with simpler mechanical options, because we find it focuses the attention on at the table creativity and story-telling, as opposed to carefully constructed character builds." (Some people will find that appealing and some will pass.) "I like to run a my-way-or-the-highway game, so I've restricted most of the mechanical options from chapters of the PHB that I can't be bothered to read, and if you bring any ideas you got from anywhere else, I will definitely ...

Thanks Matthan sounds great -- I am going to assume on the side of speed and begin the creation process this way I will be ready to go fairly quickly if QL says its a go. I have an extra character waiting in the wings should a spot open up later on. Is there anything I should be aware of in game that is not covered by the standard guidelines. Such as what language do you all speak, I kind of liked the Spanish character but if you all do not speak Spanish that might be difficult that is unless I can easily pick up whatever language is most common to the current group. Now this also seems kind of historical is this true or are the nationalities the only thing that was borrowed historically?

Great roleplaying all around. I still struggle with how to award Inspiration, but let's say that Thateous gets it for great negotiation / resisting the vampire's temptation, Ancalagon gets it for extremely in-character quotable wit (that risked antagonizing an ancient vampire), and Matthan gets it for masterfully discerning the moral of the jann's tale. Feel free to chime in if I miss anything or you all think something merits Inspiration; it's probably the area of DMing where I am most fallible. http://i.imgur.com/hwLpNWG.jpgUsqual, back still perfectly erect spreads his hand over the rug and the glowing sand hisses and seems to stream back into his hand and disappear. His copper-and-verdant green eyes twinkle at noble Husam seated across from him, bowing his head at the half-orc's wisdom. "Do I carry the wisdom of Shakar?" He echoes, letting the question float in the main cavern of the caravanserai carved from sandstone. "It is like reaching for a stonefruit on a tree that grows slightly further the further one reaches. But I am freshly burdened by the fighting in the Badu al-Kabir against the honor-less jann of Khaldun. The losses my people sustained were great, and those surviving were scattered in the seven directions including Sheikh Ja’afar-al-Din al-Shakar...

  • 04:32 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Matthan in post Spell & Crossbones
... A dozing old snaggle-toothed Scottish deerhound lazily cracks one eye open, whining slightly at the unfamiliar scents as its head slumps back down. Only two of the eight cells are occupied. One contains a man dressed in pirate leathers with a broad hat covering his face lounging in a half-sleeping state along a wooden bench. Across the way from him are the nine Spanish navy-men who are to be hung in the public square tomorrow morning. Rising from a disquiet rest, the senior most of the navy-men, a broad-shouldered man whose captivity hasn't yet damaged his lustrous wavy shoulder-length hair or waxed beard. This must be Nicolás de Atrejo who the mysterious Sophie Trémiere spoke of and composed a letter to, now entrusted to Blaise to complete delivery. "I asked to speak with the Governor, and instead they send priests. Mi humillación es completa." His eyes follow you in the dim light of the two oil lamps lighting this second floor. Reminder about conversation with Sophie Trémiere and Matthan... "Oui, this will do," she says upon reaching the hovel with Etienne in the lead. "There are nine Spanish Navy-men set to be hung in public square tomorrow morning, as you know. They are alleged to have turned on Captain Read Wallace of the Winchelsea once they'd surrendered to him." It's clear she isn't buying the story. "I need information these men have, about a new ministry forming in the Spanish Navy...and I'd rather not have to contract the services of a voodoo priestess to speak with their remains..." For a moment she seems about to dismiss the idea, but then a savvy smile falls over her features. "Unless you were to get the information I seek in writing? I could draft a letter, seal it in wax, for the most senior of these navy men. I believe his name is Nicolás de Atrejo," she says, pronouncing the Spanish flawlessly. "You could deliver it to him, along with the implements that he might draft and seal a reply of his own. Surely that would indemnify you from being exposed to ...

...aji, a pen and ink, if you would, young one. Khaldun Oasis is some 90 miles to the south and east, following the al-Sabiya River. The oasis lies east of the river, where the Badu al-Kabir meets al-Yabki Mountains." Receiving pen and ink from the boy, he places them on the carpet in front of him. "Raiders? If the Khaldunis had their way there'd be no world beyond their little oasis. Behind marble pillars, they count themselves masters of infinite space, not realizing they have denied their true natures. They keep many...guests...little more than slaves...men and women who were lost in the desert, many seeking The Lost City, but these guests are not free to leave for they pay the water price to the Khalduni Sheikh for five years. I did not see much of their encampment – they frequently kept my eyes shrouded and kept us prisoners in a covered pit. However, I overhead them speak with fear the name "Zu'l Janah" on several occasions...some monster or evil god perhaps." I believe we said Matthan Husam was carrying the party's map? Just remember that sharing your map to have NPCs add things to it also means sharing your map, so the NPC can see what you've marked so far. Do you give the map to the jann?

Let me think on it some. I think you have some good points Shayuri I've just been really busy and these treatments have been taking a lot out of me the last couple weeks so I've fallen behind in the game a little bit. But that happens for all of us and I'll pick it up again soon hopefully tonight. EDIT: apologies for voice dictation on iPhone And Matthan no need to worry, I'm down with your side quest to talk to the Spanish navy men. Just "real life" getting in the way.

I thought about that Matthan but no one has a background feature / backstory that suggests they spent a lot of time passing through desert oases or would know NPCs residing at a caravanserai. Normally, "do I recognize a name?" would be a background question or maybe a proficient History check or something... Akilah is a noble w/ ties to Tajar. History & Religion proficiency. "Amina" is an urchin w/ ties to Soft Whisper holy slayers. Salahuddin is genie-touched w/ ties to courts of the djinn. Arcana & Investigation proficiency. Husam is a soldier w/ ties to Tajar. Harun is a desert rider - so potential there - but he swapped out his background feature for the sa'luk ability to mouth off to nobles without repercussions. Lal Qalandar is a hermit...who has traveled a bit...*maybe* Lal Qalandar has passed through? Religion proficiency.

I feel like there is a lot of stuff missing for this launch. I can't find a projected page count for the book for example. I understand they want to hold stretch goals close to their chest, but they aren't even mentioning the first one or two to give a sense of the scale that they're looking at to make these higher pledges worthwhile. This was my impression as well. At least have one or two stretch goals, especially since they will be hitting their $50,000 goal soon, it seems. And since they've done KS before, they should have been aware of how fast $50,000 would be reached.

The article mentions that every credited author has publicly denied writing the offending section of the book. Who wrote it then? Is there any investigation towards that? That just seems bizarre to me. There's no "investigation" as such. It isn't like nobody at White Wolf knows who wrote it - It isn't a mystery that confounds anyone there. They just aren't telling. From discussion with people much closer to White Wolf than myself, there seems to be a very likely candidate. But it is hearsay, so I won't name names here.

I'm afraid that this will get lost as this thread seems to be heading for a lock soon, but can someone explain one particular thing in this White Wolf scenario. The article mentions that every credited author has publicly denied writing the offending section of the book. Who wrote it then? Is there any investigation towards that? That just seems bizarre to me. While I can't speak for them, when I publish books I frequently contribute a lot of text for which I don't get credit. Producing a book can involve a lot of people, and there's a lot of job crossover.

I don't personally know who it is, but the person who actually brought the issue to the attention and organised a petition about it (who I have communicated with) is apparently in direct communication with the writer as well. Both have expressed regret over the situation - while the information about the problems with editing, and how the piece was originally intended to be presented, stems from this source. I am assuming that the writer is keeping a low profile, noting how other White Wolf writers had been doxed and threatened earlier in...

I have been watching Kobold Press' latest kickstarter (Tales of the Old Margreve, and it has caused more than a little bit of a stir. The publisher is presenting the Kickstarter in print and VTT format without offering PDFs as an option and is getting a lot of flack for it. That strikes me as notable and worth reporting on. I would love to see ENworld pull together an article collecting information on what's happening and the response. However, I cannot find a place to send that tip to your reporters. Most outlets like this would have an email address dedicated to receiving tips from the readership. Have you considered implementing something like that so the community can point you towards stories that you may otherwise miss? It's possible one already exists, but it may need to be more visible. I couldn't find it. Very first stickied post in this forum. Entry of New Scoops looks most likely.

I want to respond more fully when I have more time tomorrow, but I do want to give you two things to think through. Consider what Legendary Leader does and try to find something published by WotC for 5e that does something of a similar scope. The only thing I could think of was a 9th level spell. I think that should be a strong indicator about the balance we're dealing with here. The other thing that I would like you to consider is how much of your design is balanced around your assumptions. You should not be balancing mechanics based on the AP. That's poor design. Your feats, spells, archetypes, etc... should be viable regardless of the game. You don't design something overpowered and then try to constrain it narratively. That just frustrates the player and DM. Balance it up front. One last thing and I promise that I will more fully respond tomorrow. Every piece of feedback (which I admit is small) has had issues or concerns with the feat chain concept. The folks who are ...

  • 05:37 AM - Tormyr quoted Matthan in post War of the Burning Sky 5e Player's Guide Preview!
I’m on my phone so please forgive the brevity, but Legendary Leader is terribly broken in its current state. Compare it to Foresight (a 9th level spell) and it outperforms it in almost every way and can be done multiple times. A half elf hex blade warlock could have it online by eighth level and essentially have access to an ability more powerful than a spell available at eighteenth. As written, it is stronger than most class capstones. It does not fit 5e as is. Conversion sometimes have to look towards the spirit of something more than just the mechanics. You need to scratch the design and ask yourself what would a Legendary Leader look like in 5e? Honestly, you need to ask yourself that with a lot of your design. You’re hewing to close to the 3.5 paradigm and being to rigid with the initial design. 3.5 was designed to be feat heavy and that design was asking what a fantasy leader would look like in that system. You need to walk away from the prior guides and ask how you would meet the funda...

I love WotBS and have been running it in 5e for a while now. I never bothered with a direct conversion of a lot the player material though so I’m really interested in what you’ve come up with. I’ve got the 3.5 and 4e versions pulled up too. My plan is to go through, compare, and offer my thoughts as they come. Hopefully, one or two will be helpful. *snip* There you go. There’s my thoughts. That took longer than I thought, but I hope its helpful. Wow, thank you. That was extremely helpful. I considered everything carefully and made many adjustments based on your feedback. Here are some places I decided to still keep things close to their original version and some of the reasons why. Feel free to tell me whether you still think the options are somewhat off balance. :) It may look like I said, "I am not so sure about that," a lot, but it is because you gave me so much good feedback to work with. Paragraph Indentation I think it is common to not indent the opening paragraph of a section....

Could we talk you into breaking it down into smaller chunks for print like Zeitgeist did? I kept looking at the POD for the 3.5 version, but I can't imagine it would do well with over a thousand pages. Also, any more news or hints that you want to share on this? Maybe an idea on when we'll hear more? Please? Maybe as an early Christmas gift? We are still looking at all the options, so take this with a grain of salt... I am looking at screen and printer-friendly options for letter and A4 paper to start. When everything is released, there likely would be a bundle that includes all the PDFs. I would also like a POD option for each of the chapters and an omnibus. The 3.5 omnibus clocked in at 712 pages, and I think OBS premium hardcover limit is 840 I am currently working through Chapter 1, the campaign guide, and the player's guide. Chapter 1 and the campaign guide are largely completed and need a bit of polish. We are making sure everything looks good and the player and monster options m...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am not asking for "reform". I am not asking to know all the details, outcomes, etc... of every workplace incident. I am asking for the one incident of which I am aware to be handled with greater care than a talking to behind closed doors from a close friend. This is not a "witch hunt" or an "inquisition" since Mr. Webb has admitted that he was wrong. I do not wish to engage in name calling, but I would like to ask that you not refer to those who are not satisfied with a verbal slap on the wrist by a friend as tyrants in the same vein as Torquemada. Again, the request is not unreasonable. I'm not asking for Mr. Webb to step down from his position. I'm not asking for FGG to somehow oust him from his company. I'm not even asking for them to pause their production plans. I'm asking for him to attend some kind of training to prevent the situation from recurring. • 08:19 PM - Mort quoted Matthan in post Using a quarterstaff one handed?
Someone will have a great answer and be able to point towards a fencing manual of some kind from the Middle Ages that has pictures, but I always just pictured it like a blunt spear when one handed. You're poking people hard with it. Thing is, the quarterstaff does the same damage as a spear. It's just weird to me that poking someone with a blunt stick (even if it is metal shod or some-such) does the same damage as poking them with a spear. I pictured it as someone not really trying to wield it as a weapon. Rather, they're just holding it as a walking staff and can use it to bop someone on the head if they happen to get too close. OK, since you're speaking prayers loudly to cover up the sound of the conversation, and you don't speak Latin, I may have you make a Charisma (Deception) check to fool the gaoler downstairs if the conversation lasts much longer. I’m going to roll an insight check for whether they’re lying about the situation with Wallace (did he flay the slave and that’s why they rebelled). However this impacts the DC, I think Blaise is inclined to believe them. Wall...
