  • 12:51 AM - skerritthegreen quoted Rydac in post DM rewards for running Adventurer's League - what are your thoughts?
None of the above are great hurdles. Have the authors do it? Probably best option.....I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to update the adventure to state the current DM rewards. Admins do it gratis? fixing all the files is an hour maybe two, so not unreasonable. Especially so since the positive effect for DMs will we hope be quite nice. DMs all spend many hours running gratis. WotC fix? I'd hope, given the success of D&D, that the tiny cost to update a few dozen adventures to the new DM rewards scheme would not rise to a budget line and waiting for the next budget cycle. Throw out to volunteers? Sure, I've offered one who'd do all the work. Easy enough to get him or whoever volunteered to sign an NDA.....they've been used by WotC many times for a variety of projects. I'd understand if there was a response like "our new DM rewards are so cool and varied we can't simply add a blurb to the season 4 pdf guide" but to not adjust the prior season adventures to cover the (hopefully) higher ...

  • 04:20 PM - skerritthegreen quoted Rydac in post DM rewards for running Adventurer's League - what are your thoughts?
Sad that it is unlikely, and nigh on insulting to the DMs. A simple fix has been suggested in this thread regarding a line in the S4 guide....I'm confident word will get around to any DMs that don't notice. Sure, if that was the fix we were planning to make, it would be quite simple. As for the files and edits we hope to make, its not even that we have issues making the changes. We don't physically own the files. We have requested them and that is working through channels. WOTC is discussing how updates should be made: Should they go back to the authors to make changes (since they are now getting $ from the DMs Guild and changing them without their say is kinda questionable but might mean some authors choose not to update)? Should the Admins do it gratis without any pay outside of their normal position? Should WOTC find someway to pay some one (which might mean waiting for a new budget cycle)? Should we just throw it out to some volunteers like you suggest (and make them sign some s...

  • 05:29 PM - Mercurius quoted Rydac in post (More) ruminations on the future of D&D
Trying to catch up here... Being old enough to be critically aware of my own mortality (although delusional to the point of being frequently in denial of that grim truth) and without offspring of my own, I envision the day when my nephews and nieces will look at all of the RPG materials I've acquired over the years with the same jaundiced eye with which I've viewed the antique toys of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Well I think this is one of the questions I'm asking: Will D&D gain a new audience, a new generation of fans, or will it gradually dwindle away into a kind of anachronistic ultra-niche hobby that fewer and fewer people are into? Some of the anecdotes in this thread seem to go against that notion. Most all of the young crowd came in as brand new players, and have become loyal new fans who happily embraced the new rules set. Mike Mearls in one of their recent podcasts mentioned that their info showed more younger players, and that the "greying" of rpgs was not the reality...

Like Tony Vargas experience above....I too run the encounters program at a game/comics store. I've run every season, we've been running 4 full tables for the last several years, and the crowd is quite young...heavily college age, plus high school as well as fathers bringing in their 9 to 12 year olds this summer to play after hearing about the new edition. ... Most all of the young crowd came in as brand new players, and have become loyal new fans who happily embraced the new rules set. So, have you guys been running Encounters with the playtest rules? Or are we talking embracing the chargen session last week? We've had 3-5 tables going over the last 4 years, and it's currently at 5, three of them 5e, which is decidedly encouraging after the difficulty I had getting even one playtest table together in prior seasons. Mike Mearls in one of their recent podcasts mentioned that their info showed more younger players, and that the "greying" of rpgs was not the reality....mine own ex...

  • 06:56 PM - sidonunspa quoted Rydac in post Half Elf vs Human
I think you need to re-do the point buy math....I'm coming up with 29 to buy those stats and one only gets 27 for point buy. to get the above before the racial modifiers the stats would be: CHA 12 = 4 DEX 15 = 9 CON 15 = 9 WIS 11 = 3 STR 10 = 2 INT 10 = 2 Total = 29 Easy fix is making either STR or INT an 8 hell no... Start with 3 10's, 12, 14, 15... hard choice to do with dex or con.. seeing my first feat could give me +1 Dex and proficiency in dex saves. I rather lower another stat... a charming idiot does not make a good face... and 8 strength can backfire as a fighter real quick.

I think it is definitely a typo. My FLGS where I have it pre-ordered shows the July 15 date....though as a premier store they get it on the 3rd. I agree it's a typo since at the end of the article he says 'July can't come fast enough'.

  • 12:10 AM - Majoru Oakheart quoted Rydac in post GAMA Trade Show and Game Developer Conference start Monday - announcement Tomorrow?
You're more confident than me....though I hope you're right....it is the 40th anniversary of D&D, they've been working on this for three years yet still aren't at a point where they can announce the PHB will be out by Gencon ( where they'll miss out on building excitement with 40,000 plus gamers if they don't release by then). They haven't even announced what adventures they'll be running at Gen Con. We know they are running D&D Next adventures there. We know there will be a number of D&D Next 4-hour adventures running as well as a D&D Next special event, a D&D Next Dungeon Delve, and a D&D Next All Access Pass. However, we don't know what the names or plots of any of these adventures are. I just really don't think they could do this without the PHB being available. It's possible they could do it with just the Starter Set if it contains the full rules for making characters at low levels, but given that this D&D Next Special is the first event I've EVER heard of running at Gen Co...

yet still aren't at a point where they can announce the PHB will be out by Gencon "Can"? I'm sure they "can". The word we're looking for here is "won't". At least not yet. They plan marketing around what their analysts will maximize the effect. If anybody thinks there are swathes of people who will buy DDN if they announce the date now, but won't buy DDN if they announce that same date next month, they're kidding themselves.

  • 08:45 PM - Klaus quoted Rydac in post Exclusive D&D Next Campaign available at Gen Con Only
I'm not giving them special credit for making a smart business move and selling PDFs of old adventures. Great they did it, but wasn't out of goodness of their heart. What chaps me about the Gencon exclusive sale is.....I'm wondering about my incentive to remain a ddi subscriber .....why nothing special for loyalists? I like 4e and play it, but will almost assuredly move on to D&D Next. I generally like what I see so far and rarely play 4e anymore (have been playing deathwatch & iron kingdoms recently). 4e is limited to one monthly game with other d&d being playtesting sessions of Next. Since Dungeon and Dragon aren't doing much about Next and I'm moving on from 4e...unless DDI does something to sweeten the pot (like give subscribers access even via PDF after Gencon to the Ghosts of Dragonspear) I don't feel a reason to remain a subscriber. One friend suggested that if subscribers started leaving in droves it might spur WotC to pick up the pace. You may have missed it, but when the curre...

What chaps me about the Gencon exclusive sale is.....I'm wondering about my incentive to remain a ddi subscriber .....why nothing special for loyalists? I like 4e and play it, but will almost assuredly move on to D&D Next. Your incentive is for everything you already get as a DDI subscriber. You want access to the character builder, monster builder, compendium, the game info and modules from Dragon and Dungeon. That's why you subscribed, and that's what you get. If you've been subscribed all along just on the hope of getting something "special" down the road... then you've been wasting your money. WotC promised you certain things by subscribing to DDI, which you have received. No more, no less. They owe you nothing else.

  • 08:09 PM - Jester David quoted Rydac in post Time to Stop Revising
Actually they haven't been milking the D&D brand much or well. And milking it is hardly going to be satisfying to Hasbro. Even if Next comes out for Christmas 2014 I think they've done well to get Hasbro to sign off on a process that takes that long. WotC almost regularly fires people at Christmas in year end salary dumps. There are a good few people working on Next that represent "dead" money on the payroll. I'm just speaking to the cold hard reality of the deadline they face to produce a final product. That's the other big problem. With just the sales of reprints and board games to provide revenue the Christmas layoffs this year might be nasty. And unless they do gangbusters sales in 2014 there might still be harsh layoffs after going two years into debt over the project.

I agree with the original poster. While of course I also agree with Jester that I want WotC to get it right the reality is they can only go so long without producing much product for the D&D line. They really are approaching crunch time to playtest rules and quit testing concepts Says who? They still have plenty of ways to milk the brand for a year or two.
