I may be tempted to make a check after a certain number of rounds, maybe Con bonus. This way the PCs with the ability can use it for a round or two before needing to make an Athletics check. Kind of like a cheetah jumping out to attack vs a wolf tiring it to death.

I do not mind the typecasting. It sets the world in terms of what each race is meant to represent. This tends to be typical from the early days and based a bit off Tolkien. You can make a world where elves are grumpy fighters and dwarves are dainty mages, but you may end up explaining it every time to your players why they go against their type. PCs are the ones that mostly go against their...

I'm not sure I know what using the same action twice rule is. I just cannot recall it in the rules. Some of the other examples make sense about attacking and using cantrips. I know about the specific beats general rule and it seems this may fall into that rule. I kind of see it as taking your move, using your action to dash, and then using your specific power to dash again. Other PCs do...

There was that Batman movie controversy several years ago, maybe when George Clooney played him. Another complaint is that there are so many humanoid races running around. I have a hard time grasping that all these races could develop in the same world without most becoming extinct. I can see where it is not as fun having only a couple types to play or battle, but having orcs develop...

I use the monster stat blocks that I print out for encounters. I just place a dot next to the spell level where it tells me the number of slots they have. I also have colored rings from soda bottle tops that I place on the mini to show effects that are ongoing. This helps the players know if they are slowed for example and know that they can save again. Another point is that you do not have...

I always liked having each race receive bonuses and penalties. It makes more sense that a halfling. cannot be as strong as a goliath, or an orc. A goliath cannot be a dexterous as a halfling. This is just the way it is. If you want a fighter, it makes more sense to pick one race over another and a thief over another race as well. If you do away with this, you should look at the other racial...

I look at undercommon as the common trade tongue that all the underdark races speak. This is separate than the surface common that only the surface races speak. There could be something called seacommon where all the ocean races use to communicate.

I tend to cheat a bit and make a few more monsters show up if the encounter is not as difficult as expected. I do this only sometimes to make the fight more fun and not be a wipe out each time things go not as expected from what was designed. I also tend to let the player have the PC with the cool trick like this. I'm not sure how to directly counter the stealth problem. You could try an...

Several years ago there was a few articles by Gary Gygax about types of players and why they play. It was modified by a few others, so you may find other articles as well. Some players will be first to show up and always be ready and be in-game all the time. Some players show up most of the time and play, but only because they are your friends. Once you realize some players do not care as...

I recall something about Leilon town a short distance from Phandalin and tied together by random cults. I think one was Myrkul who died I thought. Appears like it will be great.

Another option is that you make only the ones your players plan to play to...

I usually allow the PCs to take a rest, but they need to pull back and hide someplace which is normally designed into the adventure even if they do not find it. In 4e Keep on the Shadowfell, there was a place at the end of the hall with a illusionary wall you could see through from the inside. This was a great place to rest and keep guard, but allowed the game to continue. I would roll for...

I like the way 5e gives some wizard spells where appropriate, or we can even make up some new spells, or find 2e versions of spells not updated. What about taking the specialty priest and make that the 3rd level path. 1st and 2nd level is the same for all clerics and at 3rd level is where you can branch out. It may make more sense to pick at 1st level and have a couple splits in the faith...

I kind of see the skills as catch-alls where you can do lots with what you are trained at. If you have Athletics, you can do all the sports, all the climb-jump-swim, all the open doors and other physical things. Does it make great sense, no, but in game terms it allows each PC to be able to do things well if they are trained. If there are too many skills, you now need a system to give more...

I had a few PCs in the past that had flavor like this, but now we mostly just say something like, " Magic Missiles shoot from the enemy caster to hit you." I think it can work for player characters, but the DM may need to be specific and just tell the players what is happening.

I tend to think dragons want something powerful enough to keep others out, but not enough to challenge themselves. Kobolds should always be present, even if they become like minions and cannon fodder at some point. The dragon can control them and they should not be swayed by the mid-tier monsters. It seems that if you combine them you could pick some of the best quests from both, but doing everything will make the PCs higher level than you need at the end and will need to boost the BBEGs to keep up. Not a bad thing, but work on on your end to think about. I most likely will run it as a separate campaign. My...

I guess it would be like at a convention where you have random players and random experience levels showing up. You will also have some players that continue to show up and be wither helpful or not. I do not have a problem with your idea. You could telegraph that this is a scout or guard and not the chief or something. If it advances the story, then that is good. It it like having to make several sneak checks to determine things. Eventually you get caught if you need to make 10 checks instead of one and maybe a second if you decide to try and sneak into the leader tent. Taking out a...

You could also have +damage vs. good or evil dragons over just a specific type or all dragons. I cannot picture it as much as just damaging all dragons. It does have the old school flavor, but feels wrong to me. You can also use the time you have left in the campaign to help your decision. If there is only another level or two then go for it and give a big item.

I tend to have a skill in my mind when setting something up, but allow other skills in at a higher DC. I can see how this sometimes leads to wanting to Athletics with Intelligence saying the PC is using the most logical way to jump or climb. This pushes it too far like attacking in 4e. I generally let Acrobatics count for some of the Athletics skills but with a 2-4 DC higher.

I would go with Survival. This is what the ranger would use, so the others should use it. The players may be able to come up with some other ideas that I may go with, but generally this is Survival with a DC around 14. This would give some basic info like how many and where they are heading. Now if the PC beat a DC of something higher like 20 I would give more info and if there was a ranger,...

I can see giving them half XP, but give them the players half. They will add power to the PC so why not make him pay with half of his XP. One could also argue that they add power to the group as a whole, so give them all a penalty of some XP. I mostly have given them a static boost in level every other time the PC gains a level. This leads to them falling behind the PCs and becoming less...

change the damage it does or give it another power. I would make it a bow so the ranger can use it and maybe tie it to the 1000 year past. You can always boost it in a few levels saying it has awoken to the PC after being separated for so long. I might just give it another power like on a crit it does +3d6 damage and give it a 1/rest power like an extra attack as a bonus action or free...

Simplifying play at the table can be broken into two parts, players and DM. For the DM, I let the players role for more things. I have the casters role the saves for the monsters like in 4e days and the players role damage upon their character from the monsters. This frees me up and speeds up combat. For players, some may be fine with options and some may not. My group tends to play without...

Exactly. Start small, like two towns at ends of a road and a forest between them. Make a few NPCs that the group will run into and a list of several names that you can use when needed. Make a few rumors that the PCs will hear in the bar and let them choose one. Have a roadside encounter ready to fill time. So many nice ideas here I have to give a lot of XP, only with the second paragraph in aco175 s post I got a little problem. The start out small and let the players contribute works for several aspects of a homebrew campaign but things like a pantheon should be a bit more detailed upfront. It is not like adding a new town to an uncharted area on the map but common global lore we talk about. You can easily run into consistency problems with that.

Sorry, you've already given me such great suggestions, would it be okay though for you to give me some examples?? :3 Would the item for Dex be something like the gauntlets of ogre strength per chance?? (I only know those cause an ally of mine got them last session XD ) KahlessNestor sadly mariner's armour would not do me much good, :( Tritons get an innate swimming speed that is 30ft, same as my walking speed (But for some strange reason my awakened otter companion has 40ft swimming speed??? >XD I refuse to bring it up however since I can dash twice as a rogue lol, otherwise I might have been annoyed at being out swam by an otter!!! XD ... they don't get bonus to dash, do they? ^.^ ) Boots of elven kind sound really good for sneaking yo! : D briggart, noted ;D and Draegn hah! I like your thinking there sir ;D heheheheh! :o aco175 I am currently hopping to get a luck blade in the form of a dagger!!! XD but man a dagger with misty step doesn't sound half bad at all, fun to RP and kinda useful for a rogue? ;3 (How cool would it be if you used misty step by throwing your dagger??? Then you are basically getting the same power as the main character in ff15, lol! XD Could make your character really cool ;D ) Okay, thank you so much you guys!! These have all been some FANTASTIC suggestions and I will definitely be putting them on my wish list soon XD I hope my DM will go for some of those, because seriously they are sounding TOTALLY cool!!

  • 06:21 PM - Blue mentioned aco175 in post Remove Curse & Lycanthropes
According to the MM: A remove curse spell can rid an afflicted lycanthrope of the curse, but a natural born lycanthrope can be freed of the curse only with a wish. So if they were natural born, no, if they were afflicted, yes. aco175 mentioned a save to avoid it if they wanted - to me, many curses the affected may not want to get rid of while affected by the curse, so if that was intended the spell write up would already cover it. The flip side is that the spell specifically requires a touch, so if you are casting it while the target is trying not to be touched I'd require an attack roll just like any other touch-delivered offensive spell. But that would be because of the situation where the target is trying to avoid a touch delivered spell, not because it's part of the spell.

Assault on Blacktooth Ridge is for level 1 to 3 has a mini campaign setting in it with villages. Its like L MoP in thar respect And in addition to Zardnaar's suggestion aco175 I would recommend that you or anyone else pick up the Umbrage Saga version I posted links to prior. The version of Assault in there has all the expansion material- Another dungeon complex, and some additional wilderness encounter areas..and on top of that. there are the 5 other adventure modules. For less than $10 it's a helluva lot of adventuring material. And as mentioned, very easy to convert. I am unsure if the 5E conversion of Assault has all the expansion material.

  • 11:30 PM - Zardnaar quoted aco175 in post How To D&D pt 2: The Adventure
Again, great article with good description. I also like to use the 5-Room Dungeon idea I read about long ago where each dungeon or adventure is 5 rooms. It combines traps and puzzles with combat and exploration (the 3 pillars) into a contained dungeon that is playable in one night. WotC used a simialr idea with some of the smaller Dungeons in PotA.

I voted standard wizard since I like them best, but go bard if you think you need more healing now that the cleric is gone. I would also make him 2nd or 3rd level to compete with the rest of the PCs. You still not steal the spotlight from your kids, but you can last a bit. It's only 300xp to 2nd level :)

I like the backstory and thought put into that. I hope the DM ties some of it in with the father and tracking down the mother's killer. I don't like having 18 in Dex and Int at first level, as well as another pair of 14s. Seems powerful, but that is just me. Dm did 2d6+6. He's signed off on the stats. Buuut- I get you.

Mostly by keeping a finger in the page you finished to see if your choice kills you. This way you can go back and make the right choice, according to the writer. Am I the only one who tried to keep track of so many options that I would occasionally run out of fingers, or forget which finger was the most recent decision point? :o

I don't remember how many times I chose to "Investigate the light in the tunnel", only to turn the page and read something like" The goblins in the room kill you". So there's not an ability check to determine which path you take? Seems like that would be a fun way to navigate such a book? (I've never seen one in person so I'm just imagining...)

I just tell them. I won't remember months later when the player announces that the PC is drinking the potion from the goblin den that was in the king's room. No, not that goblin den, but the other one where we ate the food they were cooking and got sick. Remember? So true. I can't remember that stuff.

No, not that goblin den, but the other one where we ate the food they were cooking and got sick. Remember? I pretty much do the same. But one of these days, I'll roll a die and say, oh... the potion of healing you grabbed turns out to be the one from the goblin den a few months ago, and it is poison. Roll a Con save :)

  • 05:46 PM - Oofta quoted aco175 in post How lovely, our first nightmare with hiding in combat!
I do not know if it is the rogue or halfling power that lets them hide behind the fighter every round and then pop out to gain advantage, (sounds like halfling). Do other DMs give goblins something like this where they could hide behind the hobgoblins. I tend to not allow it at all, but the thief never does it anyways so it has not been an issue. Some halflings (lightfoot?) have the ability to hide behind larger creatures. Whether or not they get advantage when they pop out from behind the fighter is up to the DM. I rule that if they "pop out" so that they can clearly see their target, the target can now see them clearly as well. While there are times when you can get advantage in combat from hiding, in general line of sight goes both ways. Expect variation depending on your DM.

Two different abilities. The Halfling can Hide behind larger creatures, but they must use their Action to do so (so they'd Hide in the first round, then pop out from behind the Fighter in the second round to attack with Advantage.) Whereas the Rogue and Goblin can both Hide as a bonus action, which allows them to Hide first with their bonus, then pop out and use their Action to attack with Advantage. However, they need to be in Heavily Obscuring terrain to do so (which a larger creature isn't-- it is considered Lightly Obscuring terrain.) This hiding and attacking can be done every round for the Rogue and Goblin. Some people (including my...
  • 10:18 AM - Li Shenron quoted aco175 in post What happens to the "suboptimal?"
Online, you see so many admonitions about optimization. What happens if you do not follow them? Even if it is called broken or a trap? I have turned suboptimal after a couple of years of playing 3.0 and been since then. The web is full of people who tell you how you should or should not play the game, they are also the same people who generally say that any edition is flawed to the point of being unplayable. In fact, they probably don't play at all. Not following them will only make your life easier. Does not playing with feats count as sub-optimal? If feats are not allowed to anyone, then you are sub-optimal versus who? :) If you mean that you are allowed to take feats but choose not to, then see how many people around are claiming that it's totally insane to choose feats instead of ASI: they are about the same amount of people claiming it's totally insane to choose ASI intead of feats. I don't think sub optimal matters unless someone else in the group is better than you at "...

Does not playing with feats count as sub-optimal? The use of feats is an optional feature in 5E. If your campaign does not include them then saying a character without feats is sub-optimal makes as much sense as saying that a character who chooses not to use an M240 machine gun is sub-optimal.

My brother keeps his paper minis in a binder using baseball card holder sleeves. This allows him to open the binder and see a few dozen on each page. This may work better than a notebook since you can add tabs for characters, maps, ideas, names and such I may have to steal that idea. While I generally use minis, there are times when paper minis are just easier or I want a horde of similar monsters.

A lot of the heroes in my games are more Conan"ish" than Lancelot. Is there any difference between Lancelot and Conan in terms of their preparedness to kill? The main difference seems to me to be their social status.

I'm just awed at big math. I was never very good at it and respect those that can use it. That is why I was happy to see the summary paragraph. I was not trying to be smarmy. Didn't think you were. I just wanted to make sure my initial post was as useful as it could be. :)
  • 07:16 PM - Dausuul quoted aco175 in post Damage types: How much is a point of [x] damage worth?
This is a great amount of data and I appreciate the work you put into making this and sharing it, but I was lost after the summary paragraph. Is it that there's something confusing about the tables, or are you just not interested in digging through the data? If the latter, no problem - that's why I put the summary paragraph in. Some people like playing with numbers, others not so much. Personally, I deeply dislike it when people post a conclusion and don't let me see how they got there. However, if you're trying to understand the numbers in the tables and something is hard to wrap your head around, I may be able to clear it up. (If you just want to know "How much better is fire damage than poison damage?", the first column in the first table is the one with the big-picture answer. Fire is 89% effective against the average monster, while poison is 78% effective. Everything else is breaking down the details.)

I just wanted to clarify the race of elves that are carefree and flighty, they are the mysterious Santa's elves. I'm not sure if they are listed in the book or not. I'm quite sure this is one of the new elven subrace we'll be getting. Winter Eladrins are fey-elves with a taste for winter, I'm sure they'll get a Speak with Reindeers and their own take on the gnome's mechanical toys crafting! ...oh...nevermind, they're the depressed kind of elves...

  • 03:30 AM - CubicsRube quoted aco175 in post What are all the dice you hand to another player as part of something else?
I even have gone so far as to let the players roll damage that monsters do upon their characters. Some other members here suggested that this is a bit cruel making the players damage their characters but I mostly use it to speed up play and the players do not have a problem with it at my table. I also liked the way 3e/4e allowed casters to attack reflex or fortitude rather than having the DM make a Con or Dex save. I also let the player make the save for the monsters when casting something upon them. It's not great having them try to roll low, but I also do not want to make up a new system. Mah i do that all the time. Helps with the guilt of killing pcs ;) Not my fault! I didn't roll max damage! :D

  • 06:19 PM - Mistwell quoted aco175 in post What are all the dice you hand to another player as part of something else?
As a DM I try to have the players roll lots of dice. Some is so I can be freed up and speed combat up, but also because rolling dice is part of the game that most people like to do. I let them roll healing when spells are cast on them. I also did this as a player at a convention last month and the other player seemed a bit shocked at first, but really liked the idea. I agree with you that players like rolling dice. It's one of the primary reasons I enjoy handing dice ti fellow players.

  • 01:36 AM - ccs quoted aco175 in post Do you multiclass for raw mechanical power or for character reasons?
I like to think that I only multiclass to make a cool character. I fear that the few times I did it was mostly to add something the party was missing. Something like the party was missing a mage and my thief added a few levels to take up the slack. Yuck. I will never be the guy picking up the others slack. And I'm certainly not going to distort my character concept to do so. Me? I'm OK with there being a hole in the parties capabilities. We'll just solve some problems differently.... Now if the other players are worried we're missing xy or z? Then one of them should've made such a character. Or should switch/MC/whatever.
