It just seems to me that stating "international" or that they are taking the game "worldwide" is like saying "I put gas in my car" (or charge the batteries). Of course they are. The only other option is to limit their own profits and profitability. Not that they have maximized their market penetration within the USA, but there is nothing inherent about D&D that is localized to one place. Hence...

When it comes to lethality to characters their are several factors. One of them are default rules. Another is optional rules. Then of course you have house/table rules. You also have attitude/personality of the DM and players. With the DM obviously (?) dominating the tone. So let's break that down to a few factors/abbreviations; - RAW - Other Rules - People It seems blatantly obvious to...

Ok why not allow it? The pc used both his move, his action, and his bonus action to either run away or get closer. So slow monsters learn to shell and peel the fighter first and fast food is not good for you.

When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. Not what I took away from the previous discussion at all :) Sure, it could be done. But I don't think its better than the widely accepted model of a players guide and a game masters guide and then expansion sources format.

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

I do believe their will be more box sets. And I think those are good things. But, using them as a means to expand upon the rules is a *bad* thing. I do note that they have effectively done that with sidekicks, and I'm not...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

I suggest you do three things. Talk to your players about tactics. AKA RUN AWAY. Get a plastic skull and start writing pcs names on it. (I bring out skully when the tough should be going). Adjust the encounter (this requires xp to do on the fly.)

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

So something like; "We've created products for all the good ideas we have, so we are going to change the rules just enough that we can re-use all out ideas and just convert them to the new rules." Yea, that will go over well.

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

...an that of an English longbow so it might have somewhat better chances, but even the worst arquebus bullet will have kinetic energy 5x- 10x of a longbow. As I stated the cause of death was often not the wound but an infection. So main purpose of medieval armor was not to get hit less but to not get hit at all Why? Because of infection risk. Of course in the beginning longbows would more often penetrate the lesser armor but as soon as good suits of full plate were available at least for knights and nobility they would only get taken our by a lucky arrow through the helmet slit or such, The hail of longbow arrows might be stressing or irritating and might kill their horse or their worse clad underlings but the knights were close to invulnerable. I recommend you check up the vids of scholagladiatora on youtube this guy does talk a lot about all kinds of weapons and also missconceptions like longbow arrows or katanas cutting through hardened steel - they only do that in holywood. @jasper matt Easton also did some videos on the battle of agnicourt and longbow use ethere and how it did affect various troops.

  • 11:00 AM - Hussar mentioned jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
...nvincing the group that this was a good idea. But, at no point could I simply say, "Well, either I run it this way or someone else runs" because, well, I'd be shunted to the player seat so fast I'd have burns on my cheeks. :D At the end of the day, I look at what makes DMing fun for me is knowing that I ran the most enjoyable game I could for this group. The more fun that the players are having, the more fun I have. Which generally means that yup, I'll put my preferences behind what the players want most of the time. If I can convince the players that my ideas are good enough, then, yay, I get what I want. But, otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck if I want to run a game where any of the players aren't interested. So, to use the Matt Mercer example. A DM who is unwilling to listen to what his or her players clearly state that they want, and adjust to their tastes, is a bad DM. DMing should always be about listening to the players and giving them what they want. To use jasper's example, to me it's unbelievable that the group would exclude a friend just so they could go eat Chinese food. That's a pretty dick move. That's not what I want my friends to do and I would never do that to a friend. "Hey, we're all going somewhere that you hate, see you later" when there are obviously other options available is unbelievable to me. That would be the last time I went anywhere with you. And, if I'm late coming to the car, you're going to take my wife home and leave me there? Yeah, number one, I'd be looking for a new wife pretty quickly if she didn't get out of that car and number two, that would be the absolute last time I'd associate with you.

jasper Sorry, but that is not the point, it is hard to find players, although I have my private group I would like to have a more established publically organized alternative also. So I am a bit jealous about the way it seems to be in the U.S., where you seem to have a lot more players, and the habitus that you can meet up in a game store to find interested people. This does not exist in that way in Germany, at least I am not aware of.

  • 10:11 PM - iserith mentioned jasper in post Missed session catch-up XP
...s what the guys flanking from the back are for. Do your enemies never have ranged or area effect attacks? All it takes is one boulder from that hill giant to take out that annoying gnat in the back permanently. So I call BS. Well, at least it's BS that these tactics would work in every game. Tactics cannot overcome the fact that low level PCs likely won't survive even a single hit or AOE. You may note that I did not make assertion to the effect that "these tactics would work in every game." You are attacking a strawman. I am not obligated to defend a position I do not hold. I really wish you would stop doing this. It makes conversations with you completely unproductive except to warn others who may be reading to be careful about engaging with you. And I don't know how much more of that particular public service I'm up for or how much more that point needs demonstrating. I gave that example to show that party cohesion and tactics play a big role in survival. That speaks to jasper's point about AL lacking in those things (or my point about that being true of many pickup groups) and it also goes to whether characters of the same level or disparate level are successful. Further, I have already given you ways to deal with hill giants in general. Look, I'm sorry that you and your wife's characters were killed. But there are a lot of reasons why that may be outside of having lower-level characters as I've shown several times.

  • 01:36 PM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Sleep Spell and Chain Awakening
jasper two things about that, if some Mobs run the logic thing is to chase them they might fetch backup else, which does not improve the chance for a successful rest. The bad luck here was that the Party chasing ran into the backup. The goblins chain awakening - the unlogic part about that is - that the first goblin would try to either run and leave his buddies OR the other Option for the first gob awake would be to try and wake up ALL of his buddies, and NOT RUN after the first. Otherwise the DM is gaming the System. A quick Investigation / medicine / arcana check to decide what would be the most logic reeaction of the goblin would also be in order for the gob to estimate whether his comrades are asleep or dead.

For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. • 04:46 PM - delericho mentioned jasper in post Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

Thematic. "Thieves are always slippery rogues who run away from the cops. This is dash, move, dash class. Thiefing 050 class." See Jasper's Kickstarter " 500 BS reasons to Justify class special abilities " for more information. Do you want me to reedit that in a different font and different wording to put in you PHB. The general public does not need each special feature spell. It is a freaking rogue aka thief. Everyone knows those buggers seem to put on a burst of speed when ever there is trouble about. I am trying to think of one thief in literature, comics, books, who never out ran trouble. Except for story reason when they need to be captured for their big plan.So thematic it never existed before, isn't nentioned in the fluff, and disappears immediately in the chase mechanics? Sure. Meanwhile, fighters are powerful athletes that are handily outrun by scrawny rogues, who, weirdly, aren't just half again faster but also better athletes.
  • 01:37 PM - Ovinomancer quoted jasper in post Double Dash
Oh noes some classes have features my other class does not. BOO HOO. I have no problems with Thieves spending all their actions moving 90 feet away. Unless as a free action they farted and we had pork and beans for dinner last night.Nope. No problem with classes doing different things. I like rogues being able to do lots of things. Fight and dash. Spell and dash. Some other thing and dash. Very thematic, very cool. But there's no real explanation as to why rogues can just run faster. Note I have no issues with the monk doing so -- it's thematic and tied to resources. Rogues don't run fast because it's thenatic, they run fast because of a mechanical interaction. Yawn, not interesting. Of course, this bothers me soooo much I've done nothing at all about it. Your hasty dismissal has motivated me more.

  • 11:37 PM - the Jester quoted jasper in post Does Your Fantasy Race Really Matter In Game? (The Gnome Problem)
Ok DMs, Have you made any race a scape goat/unwanted in certain towns? The first or second 5e session I ran, the pcs, including a dragonborn, were performing in a bar, using magic and breath weapons and the like to enhance the bard like a stage show, and they accidentally started a fire, then bailed. The next time they came around that bar, there was a "No Dragonborn Allowed!" sign out front. That bar has banned dragonborn ever since. Also, I use random rumor charts, updating the rumors quarterly; and there has been a "Dragonborn are dangerous!" rumor on the chart about half the time since then.

Even worst a demon goddess of fungi with breastess. There was that Batman movie controversy several years ago, maybe when George Clooney played him. Another complaint is that there are so many humanoid races running around. I have a hard time grasping that all these races could develop in the same world without most becoming extinct. I can see where it is not as fun having only a couple types to play or battle, but having orcs develop alongside goblins and hobgoblins seems odd. Maybe I can play a half orc / half bugbear with a grandparent who was a dog person to give me advantage on hearing checks.

Ok DMs, Have you made any race a scape goat/unwanted in certain towns? The PC's tried to get entry into a certain large town. One character was a half-elf with a very large bear companion. The customs officer cheerfully told the character that they would be responsible for all damage inflicted by their pets and to not leave it alone in public, but no big deal. One of the PC's was a hobgoblin. Entry positively refused until one of the other PC's told the customs agent that the hobgoblin was his man-servant with very excellent references and name dropped that formerly he had worked for a very prominent wizard. At that point the customs official agreed to allow the hobgoblin entry, but angrily complained about what this thing might do to their lovely town and the consequences that might happen if it did. At which point one of the PC's leaned over to the hobgoblin and whispered, "They consider you lower than the bear." Exactly right. And yes, walking around with a bear attracted ...

That is because the ale is really Pabst Blue Ribbon beer which everyone agrees is just water. If all ale in DnD is PBR, no wonder the dwarves are so surly.

Ok DMs, Have you made any race a scape goat/unwanted in certain towns? I do not recall having done so, but I have played in campaigns where this was so. ...which had no effect on what I played, just how I played it.

Gee Sacrosanct, you mom was mean. My mom show me three times how to thread her Singer. Then as long as I didn't use her good scissors, I could sew what I wanted. (still kicking myself for giving her knee operated Singer to charity). Let see Fall of 1982 Ft Devens Mass, specialty store had some costumes, PX had some fabric. 1984 Ft Ord Calif. Late 1984 West Berlin PX had fabric. And as soon as I learn to use my wife scanner in 20 not so easy steps, I will post my lousy costumes from the era. PS Your experience means jack compared to others experience. I'm not just giving my experience. I posted photos of the award winning costumes at LA CON from 1984. Nice try though. I am however, anxiously awaiting to see your photos of costumes from kids from the 80s that were modern day movie quality.

 You're only talking about 1984 USA, not the Dark Ages or some Points of Light D&D setting. Cars, roads, telephones (and phone books) existed. The JCPenny & Sears catalogues were readily available. Specialty catalogues as well (Dad had quite the collection for car parts as his hobby was restoring a '65 Mustang). Yes, it took more work than an Amazon click, but you could get what you didn't have. And you could also get it faster than 6-8 weeks (UPS & FedEx existed).... Also in small town American you had Fabric shop which sold costume patterns. You also had Grannys who ONLY HAD SINGER sewing machines who could be talked into sewing stuff for teenagers. DAMN Sacrosanct makes 1984 sound like 1884. I'm pretty sure at this point neither of you remember what it was like in 1984. Saying you had to mail in orders and wait weeks for delivery isn't trying to make the 80s seem like the 1880s, it was the reality. You didn't have nearly as many shops that sold things yo...

Hate console games. You just made me panic thinking BG3 wasn't getting a PC release.

...7 players you'd just split it, one of the players'd be able to run, even if they'd never done it before, because it was just one encounter, all blocked out for you. That was simplified beyond running a campaign, of course, even one where you did use modules, but even if you were running an all-original campaign, statting NPCs, designing encounters, were a breeze compared to any other ed - Skill Challenges, to do well, took a bit of artistry, though, but there was really nothing to compare them too... There have been always a shortage of DM. Due some of the players don't want to put up with BS they throw out as player. Some people have bad players who want to tick off the DM. Some don't think they could hack it. There have always been HORRIBLE DMS. (I WUZ 1!). Today. The modules are generally better. The Price is cheaper to dm (especially if you limit the books). With net access you have the world to help with your game. WE WANT YOU! WE WANT YOU! WE WANT YOU TO DM TOO! (jasper slaps all you players with his glove). If you have a nice group pick up the screen and dm.I'm not sure I followed all that. But if I did, I applaud your enthusiasm. AND I CURSE YOU WITH MY CURSE! MAY YOU HAVE SEVEN PLAYERS AND SIX DMS AND NO WAITING! rant is over.lol
  • 02:30 PM - akr71 quoted jasper in post Why don't everything scale by proficiency bonus?
I totally agree with you. IF you bring back the age chart where your stats physical stats decrease with age bracket and mental stats increase with age bracket. Until Venerable age bracket. Then every thing decreases. This would overrule the various ageless features classes get. That's an interesting idea! To be honest, I was surprised that this wasn't a thing in 5e. I skipped from 1e to 5e, so I don't know when it was taken out.

Horseshoes of Speed 20 +1 = 21 I will bet on the nag. In my experience, those aren't horses, and trying to get one to wear horseshoes is a very, very bad idea.
