We played the rules as written (EDIT: or at least as we understood them), and didn't worry about it or try to justify loop-holes. So, no metal armor, no edged weapons, no flaming oil.

I'm with other, don't weaken Str by making all your stuff Dex based. Keep separate Parkour 'tasks' related to their appropriate skill. (Many/majority will be Dex, but some are Str.) For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

So now the rest of the party has to get a mop and bucket. Now there a good reason to sneak into the dungeon to rescue the rest of the party. Knock Knock Thief. You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

Says you. Funny how re-roll initiative is one of the optional rules listed int he DMG. Sure, combat is chaotic. No, no it does not mess up anything except your assumptions and expectations. It doesn't break anything in the rules themselves. Umm, really? You are worried about something that might have a 1% impact over a statistically large sample? Besides, don't people usually...

Yes, at a table with pencil and paper. With digital tools, specifically FG, it is easy to turn on re-rolls and not worry about it. Re-roll init also has other benefits too. Esp. along the lines of limiting metagaming and enhancing the chaos of combat.

I'll have to read some setting materials to see if I'm comfortable with the races and magic in SR. I also have to say the C-Punk 2077 that is coming out next year might be well timed for me.

*shrugs* maybe. I've known/know "genius intellects" (as defined by Mensa). Doesn't mean they have much common sense or can extrapolate. Some have intellects that are very narrow and I can easily see that a 1st level wizard with a genius intellect would have no practical idea of how that would effect his spells if cast underwater. Lots of variables, just another situation for a DM to make a ruling...

I should have expanded upon my thoughts. Changes to the way spells work is fine (and can add to the fun). But, they need to be communicated IRL to the player in a timely manner (not necessarily before the first water adventure, depending). And they need to be thought through so that a roughly equivalent set of changes are made to all the character classes. Not that every character or class has...

ElfQuest Rules were similar to RuneQuest/BRP, but the setting was just missing so much... like starting equipment. Did you just pick what you wanted or only what the GM gave you? Of course, there were no guidelines for the GM to use to decide what to give you. It was written for fans of the comic book, so they could re-live the adventures of the comic book characters. It was not a stand-alone...

Oh, get what you are doing, I totally get it. What you don't get is you are removing player agency or the importance of such agency. You give 4 outcomes for the entire adventure (or even 40 is an incredibly small number compared to LMoP as is). That is not of interest to me. You are increasing story telling where the DM narrates (or just reads) a bunch more than you see in your games. The lack...

As soon as you put to people into the mix, it will take longer, as soon as you have people who have to make decisions, it will take longer. If I remember right, a popular opinion on the forums here is that combats typically last 3-4 rounds. Since each round is ~6 seconds, that's 18-24 in-game seconds. Pretty quick to me. I will also say that combat in 5E is the fastest yet. If your combats are taking too long, then you need to get your group into using best practices. A single character's turn should typically take less than 60...

IMO, Mr. Howard, the author, was sitting around the house watching his kids and he was bored. Maybe he had a deadline and had to come up with something, anything, to get to his editor. Besides being poorly done, it still reaches it's objective, which is to bring a bunch of clicks to the page so that the site can claim all sorts of click for ad revenue.

TonyVargas ...approaches out?Closest to this, I suppose. I really lift from the fiction of Tanith Lee & Michael Moorcock, when it comes to the relationship of the mortal to the divine. Gods gain power, perhaps even derive existence, from their worshippers..... Thanks always want to when the idea that worshippers are batteries came from. I am not a follower of that idea.

Ok, here are some of changes that stand out. No progression is allowed in any hardcover instead of just Season 9 hardcover Dms can give out gold during the session instead of the end. Tier 1 and 2 same 25gp Tier 3 Changed to 180 Gp Tier 4 Down to 700 Gp. But no times your level. But PER HOUR. Sorry Morrus you forgot to punch in no GOLD for you. Mundane Treasure and Loot are gone again.

Some updates. NO progression will only be available to Season 9 PCs. You can loot some of the treasure. Tier 1 and Tier 2 25 GP * your level. Tier 3 75 * your level. Tier 4 750 * your level. Only tier 4 characters can buy legendary items. Magic items can only be traded within the same season people. Except for Fai Chen. New pcs must declare Season or Legacy.

Agreed, and I believe that it is supported both with historical fact and role playing reasons that no point in going for the hull. Do you want there to be a mechanical reason for attacking the hull? Think of the size of most of the components on a ship, they are roughly the same size or larger than a character or monster. So if a commoner is AC 10 to damage standing on the deck of a ship,...

Oh, and another reason I think small/short adventures will be better, if life happens and you don't finish, that's going to leave a poor experience. Like getting half-way through a game of Monopoly your first time (now why did we do this?). Multiple quests that he 'wins' at each time will leave him with 2, 3, or 4 'games' under his belt.

Why would you think anyone would attack the hull? Every RPG I play it with sailing vessels, we start by burning the sails of the other ship. That lets us either run away or close at our discretion. Then you pick off any artillery they have. Then close if you want. Ships are valuable if you can sail it back to port, and if not they carry valuable cargo you can loot. My understanding is...

But, regardless, some mechanics (assuming 5E); - advantage on fear saves (i.e. a grave robber has to be pretty resistant to fear) - proficient skills; investigation, religion, stealth, perception (pick 2?) (Don't see a need for athletics for digging, come on, how good do you need to be with a shovel?)

...an that of an English longbow so it might have somewhat better chances, but even the worst arquebus bullet will have kinetic energy 5x- 10x of a longbow. As I stated the cause of death was often not the wound but an infection. So main purpose of medieval armor was not to get hit less but to not get hit at all Why? Because of infection risk. Of course in the beginning longbows would more often penetrate the lesser armor but as soon as good suits of full plate were available at least for knights and nobility they would only get taken our by a lucky arrow through the helmet slit or such, The hail of longbow arrows might be stressing or irritating and might kill their horse or their worse clad underlings but the knights were close to invulnerable. I recommend you check up the vids of scholagladiatora on youtube this guy does talk a lot about all kinds of weapons and also missconceptions like longbow arrows or katanas cutting through hardened steel - they only do that in holywood. @jasper matt Easton also did some videos on the battle of agnicourt and longbow use ethere and how it did affect various troops.

  • 11:00 AM - Hussar mentioned jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
...nvincing the group that this was a good idea. But, at no point could I simply say, "Well, either I run it this way or someone else runs" because, well, I'd be shunted to the player seat so fast I'd have burns on my cheeks. :D At the end of the day, I look at what makes DMing fun for me is knowing that I ran the most enjoyable game I could for this group. The more fun that the players are having, the more fun I have. Which generally means that yup, I'll put my preferences behind what the players want most of the time. If I can convince the players that my ideas are good enough, then, yay, I get what I want. But, otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck if I want to run a game where any of the players aren't interested. So, to use the Matt Mercer example. A DM who is unwilling to listen to what his or her players clearly state that they want, and adjust to their tastes, is a bad DM. DMing should always be about listening to the players and giving them what they want. To use jasper's example, to me it's unbelievable that the group would exclude a friend just so they could go eat Chinese food. That's a pretty dick move. That's not what I want my friends to do and I would never do that to a friend. "Hey, we're all going somewhere that you hate, see you later" when there are obviously other options available is unbelievable to me. That would be the last time I went anywhere with you. And, if I'm late coming to the car, you're going to take my wife home and leave me there? Yeah, number one, I'd be looking for a new wife pretty quickly if she didn't get out of that car and number two, that would be the absolute last time I'd associate with you.

jasper Sorry, but that is not the point, it is hard to find players, although I have my private group I would like to have a more established publically organized alternative also. So I am a bit jealous about the way it seems to be in the U.S., where you seem to have a lot more players, and the habitus that you can meet up in a game store to find interested people. This does not exist in that way in Germany, at least I am not aware of.

  • 10:11 PM - iserith mentioned jasper in post Missed session catch-up XP
...s what the guys flanking from the back are for. Do your enemies never have ranged or area effect attacks? All it takes is one boulder from that hill giant to take out that annoying gnat in the back permanently. So I call BS. Well, at least it's BS that these tactics would work in every game. Tactics cannot overcome the fact that low level PCs likely won't survive even a single hit or AOE. You may note that I did not make assertion to the effect that "these tactics would work in every game." You are attacking a strawman. I am not obligated to defend a position I do not hold. I really wish you would stop doing this. It makes conversations with you completely unproductive except to warn others who may be reading to be careful about engaging with you. And I don't know how much more of that particular public service I'm up for or how much more that point needs demonstrating. I gave that example to show that party cohesion and tactics play a big role in survival. That speaks to jasper's point about AL lacking in those things (or my point about that being true of many pickup groups) and it also goes to whether characters of the same level or disparate level are successful. Further, I have already given you ways to deal with hill giants in general. Look, I'm sorry that you and your wife's characters were killed. But there are a lot of reasons why that may be outside of having lower-level characters as I've shown several times.

  • 01:36 PM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Sleep Spell and Chain Awakening
jasper two things about that, if some Mobs run the logic thing is to chase them they might fetch backup else, which does not improve the chance for a successful rest. The bad luck here was that the Party chasing ran into the backup. The goblins chain awakening - the unlogic part about that is - that the first goblin would try to either run and leave his buddies OR the other Option for the first gob awake would be to try and wake up ALL of his buddies, and NOT RUN after the first. Otherwise the DM is gaming the System. A quick Investigation / medicine / arcana check to decide what would be the most logic reeaction of the goblin would also be in order for the gob to estimate whether his comrades are asleep or dead.

I hate the trolls that invaded this thread (and if you read them before they were deleted, you know what I'm talking about). But I also don't like trolls even if they happen to agree with my point of view. What you are doing is trolling. You might think it is cute, or funny, or that the ends justify the means, or that it is completely appropriate given the number of evil, misogynistic trolls that have flooded this thread. It's not. For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. If you had been making those comments to me, I would have reported you for harassment; asking for people's social security numbers on an on-line forum is never appropriate. There are a lot of good, interesting, and substantive things people have said on this thread. Becau...

  • 04:46 PM - delericho mentioned jasper in post Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

  • 05:30 PM - Ohmyn quoted jasper in post Why the Druid Metal Restriction is Poorly Implemented
"Railroading is not removing choice in selecting mechanics, but rather removing options in the game world by stating the possible to be impossible without any reason given besides not wanting the player to do it, or "the rules". So, just to be clear, now asking your player to abide by "thevrules" of the class you chose is railroading? Great!!! Yet another case of a word being eroded to meaninglessness. By this definition, I am proudly railroading my PCs for nearly 40 years now. No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that when you read a line in a silly way that makes the possible impossible, and use that to say that an action simply cannot be performed by the player that otherwise should be possible, then yes, it's railroading. What people are somehow not getting is that this is a roleplaying game. If I say, "My father is lactose intolerant, so he can't drink milk, because dairy gives him gas," no person in their right mind is going to interpret that there is a magical barrier in fro...

Consider a hypothetical game with typical Nar(rative) mechanics. It will have rules for allowing players to engage in authorship, but only in a finite way. However, the storyteller - or 'guide' - still has the unlimited authorship of a world builder and secret keeper. Additionally, Nar games often flat out encourage the guide to engage in traditional railroading techniques such as Schrodinger's Map or Schrodinger's Stat Block. Sure, sure. Infinity makes any other amount look like zero. Or actually zero (not sure). I see Schrodinger's Pie as a finite one. And you don't know how much control pie the GM has until the players have their pieces. BTW, didn't know Schrodinger was so into role-playing! Sales price - (Develop Cost + Printing cost + business cost) = profit. For me. (Purchase price + upkeep cost (soda, note pads, new modules) ) / # of hours of enjoyment = fun ratio. Is that ratio upside down? Also, does it mean that free games have a fun ratio only if they have ...

  • 01:52 PM - Dausuul quoted jasper in post Why the Druid Metal Restriction is Poorly Implemented
A druid is hippie wantabe cleric who wanted to get back to nature but was too lazy to use the internet to research gods with a nature domain. A druid is one the few classic classes which has kept it flavor/lore/etc restriction. Number 4 of no non metal medium armour is the sole reason people hate the restriction. To me people who gripe about the restriction want the cool powers of a druid but not limits. No, that is not the reason. I mostly play wizards, who get no armor at all, and have to devote a spell slot and a prepared spell to having a non-abysmal AC. But the wizard rules are straightforward: You are not proficient with any armor. You can put it on, but you can't cast spells if you do. If you want to wear armor and cast spells, here are the hoops you must jump through (multiclass, spend feats, or play a race with racial armor proficiency). All that is fine. If druids were limited to proficiency with light armor and hide, I would have no problem with that. Even if they had an additio...

Yup Missed that. But you missing the part where ALOT of us use the modules as OFFFICAL WAY TO PLAY. It wasn't until I saw some of Gary's posts here mention lots of hirelings in a dungeon was one way to play. I've always gone with the rules as the official way to play, but that's just me I guess. Three or more includes 6-9, but doesn't require it or make 6-9 the baseline. The baseline presumption of the game is that 3 is as ideal as 9 is. Modules are a different beast. Many of them were written for convention and/or tournament play, and I suspect others just followed that model. Perhaps they figured it was easier to tone down a module for 3 players, than it is to beef it up for 9.

oh! Oh! Mr. Kotter. What about kid players do they count. Or from saltmarsh 1981 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is the first installment in a series of three modules designed and developed in the United Kingdom, for beginning adventures with the AD&D rules. The adventure can be played by 5-10 characters of levels 1-3. This module contains large-scale maps, full background information, and detailed encounter descriptions for the players and DM.... Perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned that modules were different. You shouldn't look to them for what the base game expects.

Anybody else remember when the modules told about how many pcs you needed to run in the adventure? Yes. But I also remember how unreliable those guidelines were, how hard they could be to interpret in practice, and that they were guidelines.

Read the freaky blog. from the blog. ****** What we don’t need is people spreading wild rumour and supposition, consider that I’ve had more than twenty people contact me, both at the show and afterwards, saying that they’d splashed the name of the GM out there, so as to make sure that they could never do it again… ***** Twelve of those people had the wrong name… So 12 out of the 20+ people HAD the WRONG NAME. So we have up to 12 GMS who have been slandered. Again What happens when a Con uses BAD SOURCE information to Ban a GM. And announces the ban. I think what happened with that was the following: 1. Twitter describes incident in a Tales from the Flood game, not naming GM. 2. UK Expo bans GM, but doesn't name him, and then in the background deletes all his games off the system. 3. People go on the UKGE website, search the Tales from the Flood - it brings up the other GM running and they think it must be him as that's the only game that's listed for Tales from the Flood.

Doh. I saying it is worst now. You're saying that a dozen posts which get Kevin Rolfe's name wrong, are worse than the Hollywood blacklists resulting from McCarthy's Red Scare? That's a bold, unconventional position. We might even call it... edgy.

No con has incorrectly banned a GM for something he didn’t do and slander his name.

You are firing a dude for something which did not happen at his place of work, did not involve his work business. Sorry Mr. Hussar here is box of stuff, the bobby will walk you to personel to pick up your last paycheck. The Boss saw you moon the winning side at last night's Super bowl. There is a reason some places do not allow a morality clause in your employment contract/ hr polices. What are you talking about? I'm talking about what actually happened. GM at a con went totally off the rails and got fired from being a GM at the con. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

Again What happens when a Con uses BAD SOURCE information to Ban a GM. And announces the ban. Yes, if the con uses bad information, and then publicly announces an incorrect conclusion, yes they are at some risk of liability. But, that's huge IF. That isn't what happened here. This is a hypothetical boogeyman of a scenario. Upthread I mentioned, as does the blog post, *the con investigates* when there's a reported issue. They don't take word on the internet at face value - they go and talk to people who were present at the time. So, really, stop worrying about the convention doing something wrong based on bad information. They double check things. They have policies and procedures specifically to prevent them from doing what you are worried about here.

And the con isn't responsible for the actions of others outside of their venue. If I tell you that a friend of mine did something creepy, and then you go and post about it on the internet, that's not the con's responsibility. There's no civil liability issue here. The con isn't responsible for controlling these people or what they do outside of the con. You can't on the one hand say the con shouldn't enco...

There is nothing so far that sts they named other GMs. It could have been typos, incomplete names or anything. This conclusion seemed driven by agenda not derived from what was said.

To be more on point Will a con a have a civil liability, if they take to various social media platforms and Announce Jasper was ban from helping the con due to what happen a Con A. IF they ban the wrong Jasper. This has nothing to do with this case. In most cases, a con would just refuse to sanction the participation and not go social about it. Nobody wants to bring up risks and negatives in their promotions. This seems to be hunting for a way to tie some social media mob bad agenda to this case and topic.
