No. Would you give another character 2 bonus actions per turn just because they have access to more than 1?

You've never seen a gnome paladin? Or a halfling barbarian? Or a dwarf wizard? Boy, you must not be around very creative players! Oh, and I suspect you meant "characters" when you said players, I don't think we are allowed to discuss player's racial tendencies :)

Since I couldn't do SCA due to caretaker role, gaming was my only downtime. However old group wanted to move Sunday gaming, 30 minutes away. No problem there. When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. Whimper Whine.” In my homebrew gnomes have cornered the market on gems. All gnomes are suspect...

I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. It's true to the times, and...

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Have you been between San Diego and San Fran? There's not much empty space out there except Camp Pendelton north of San Diego. And it's not exactly like New England is a megacity sprawl. Reminds me of a story when I was staying with my Grandmother as a teenager. We were going to be driving from upstate New York (Balston Spa) to Vermont (Bennington) and she was adamant that we make sure to take...

Here's why I didn't/wouldn't pick the others. - Monsters, their are so many out there that are good quality and free, why pay for more? i.e. 1d6 Adventures/Monster a Day has something like 400+ already that I've never had time to go through. - Magic Items, maybe. Because I haven't yet come across any strong collections. But I'd be looking for a large set, not a...

Also as an outside observer I've wondered the same as the OP. One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? I mean it has seemed like for a long time PF just kept publishing more options, more adventures, more content; and that was their model. Did they simply run out of topics/content or...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. • 03:23 PM - KahlessNestor mentioned jasper in post Please remove Demiplane of Dread Story Award next season
jasper Your condescending tone doesn’t help any, nor do half your responses. Who cares what you gaming store schedule is? It's not even relevant. Do you know anyone who even still runs S4 content? No one. There's a reason for that. It's because no one wants to lose their character to a stupid story reward. I had 2 characters get locked in because I can't make it every week. It isn't just a portabolity issue. It's also a frequency of play issue. AL needs to be not just portable, but also drop on/drop out. Demiplane of Dread works against both of these core tenets of Organized Play. Story rewards shouldn't undermine the basic core of your program. Reward players who can make it, but don't punish those who can't. Luckily I was abke to buy my bard out of Barovia, but my druid wasn’t so lucky. I had to rely on DM mercy letting me go into DTD debt to play her at a con. Ad now I can't play her and get dinosaur forms because of the damn death curse, another poorly thought out story "reward". S...

  • 05:52 PM - Kobold Boots mentioned jasper in post Are powergamers a problem and do you allow them to play in your games?
jasper Replying to you this way as your quote tags are messed up so I'd rather be clear than sort that out. 1. Talking is never the best first idea with any problem or most situations. Figuring out the problem is. Reason: Talk without data is opinion and generally a waste of time. 2. If you don't like the person you're gaming with, that's the problem. The power gaming is secondary. 3. If you do like the person you're gaming with and he or she is a power gamer, then the solution is pretty easy. Do the stats, scale the encounters, you're done. 4. Best advice to DMs who think they're scaling things without doing the stats is, "Don't trust your gut" it got you in trouble in the first place and is why you're having the problem. Nuff said here because I offered help and you replied back with something silly, so I'm done with you. Be well KB

  • 03:03 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
From the PHB "The effects of different spells add together while the durations of those spells overlap." So if you want a strictly RAW and there is no Sage info on this *snip* As jasper pointed out earlier, Xanathar's clarifies that the proper name of the effect is what is important for determining what stacks rather than the effect itself. So multiple jump spells do not stack, but jump should stack with Step of the Wind. Step of the Wind merely allows the monk to jump as well as a strength fighter at the cost of a ki point.

  • 06:13 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
Thanks for the replies everybody. Doesn't look like there's a clear consensus or rule for this. My initial feeling was frustration at what I thought seemed OP. But some of the replies here have changed my mind to allow it at X6. Super Monk Jumping would be super cinematic. jasper makes a good point about both the ring and step of the wind requiring a bonus action. However the jump spell lasts a minute, so the effects could be combined on the next turn.

  • 04:02 AM - Yaarel mentioned jasper in post What is the best way to handle ‘magic resistance’ in D&D 5e?
Coroc I was wondering about defining 5e magic resistance as verses non-instanteous effects? So magic resistance is vulnerable verses Fireball, because the effect is instantaneous, thus the fire itself is nonmagical. This might require too much bookkeeping to look up whether any particular spell is instantaneous or not. Also, Antimagic Field negates Fireball too, so it seems even instantaneous effects are considered magical. Note, if 5e ‘magic resistance’ is simply a save advantage, then by definition, any spell that attacks AC, like Animate Object, bypasses the magic resistance. Ironically, the magical energy of Eldritch Blast attacks AC, so it might bypass the magic resistance. However Eldritch Blast is a ‘ranged spell attack’, so perhaps magic resistance applies verses ‘spell attacks’. In light of Gnome Cunning, and for the sake of simplicity, I am inclined to say, anything that attacks AC can bypass magic resistance. jasper Looking at 1e Drow magic resistance 50% + 2% per level. I figure, for 5e, advantage is good enough, and stays reasonably balanced.

  • 06:37 PM - Satyrn mentioned jasper in post [5e] Feats, what gives?
Again, That's just a sleazy player. Maybe I'm lost here, are people who optimize builds, with DM discretion and respect towards the game that everyone agreed to play power gamers, or are people who want perfect munchkins regardless of how the DM and fellow players think and feel power gamers? I don't think feats affect peoples choices anymore than stats or classes do. I think jasper's essentially saying that feats become a tool that -when layered on top of the choices made with stats and classes - provide too many choices for his preferences, that the accumulated number of choices reach a certain threshokd it creates an environment ripe for powergaming - and he doesn't enjoy that. So if you ignore his denigration of the style and preferences he doesn't enjoy, I read him as saying "Feats are the path to the dark side. Feats lead to choices. Choices leads to powergaming. Powergaming leads to suffering." Well, his suffering because it's not the style he prefers.

  • 03:12 PM - LordEntrails mentioned jasper in post The moneyer (a world building article).
Are you sure about that? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham%27s_law Normally, coins are worth *more* than their metal content. If they aren't, they get melted down. Even though it is a "Law" it is only a principal used in economic theory. That's not to say it is wrong, but it is also to say that it is not always true. As soon as the coin becomes substantially more valuable than the metal plus the cost to create it, it will be forged, which will then put pressure on driving the value down. But anyway, my intent is not to debate this. I'm not an expert on it, nor do I care that much about it to research it. All, Interesting topic, but I think that there is more thought and modern impacts being discussed here than most players will ever notice or care about. @jasper, I'm not offering. I thought you said you were getting (from source unspecified) a case of mini's for writing these articles :)

  • 09:56 AM - Lanefan mentioned jasper in post Dealing with a non-disruptive problem player
...t any effort into the game outside of scheduled game hours make it tough to run things for him, too (and I never ask for too much, and always give weeks to provide it.)You don't make clear whether this player has the time outside the game, or whether his life is particularly busy. If he really hasn't got the time, that's some slack you'll have to cut him. Every story has to be address his 'mercenery' motivation or it doesn't happen. The party can never choose to be heroic, as he just wants to get paid. This one is simpler. The party can choose* to be heroic-but-unrewarded if they like and let Sassy either come along or roleplay herself out of the party, who then go and recruit his new character. * - have some lawful type in the party insist on putting what the party does next to a vote. And if Sassy does come along, you-as-DM can always make sure that there's a reasonable haul of treasure to be found in process of Doing Heroic Deeds. It doesn't have to be either-or. :) Unlike jasper however, I'd suggest having a word with him sometime about trying a few different character concepts as Sassy sounds like it's getting old. • 06:46 PM - Hawk Diesel mentioned jasper in post New Action Type for more cooperative battles
jasper Hex only affects ability checks. Does nothing against Saving Throws. And yes, I agree that players can talk tactics and should. But if you have new players or ones that don't really know how to do that, the mechanics don't really support a team work dynamic. There are roles, and people stick within their roles. This is a way to mechanically support working together. As for the Tactical Action Surge (I believe that is the one you were asking clarification about with the tank), everyone would get advantage until the Fighter's start of their turn. Action Surge is a powerful ability. If a fighter is willing to forgo their normal benefit to use it, I believe the new benefit should be equal to the sacrifice, since a fighter gets a max of 2 action surges per short rest by level 20.

  • 05:59 AM - Challenger RPG mentioned jasper in post 6 Ways to Force Stuff on your Players
@Bagpuss : I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the article. The idea was from a friend and I don't think I fully did it justice. Because I didn't fully understand it, I ended up making jokes and probably not being very helpful. Your suggestions are excellent. I particularly like the geography idea for its simplicity and effectiveness. @jasper : Ha ha, I've done that a few times myself. I sit down and tell the players, "Here's what we're doing tonight, take it or leave it." Everyone always seems to be cool with that. They seem to object more to getting forced into things without any input from the GM whatsoever. @Hand of Evil : I really like these methods and systems. Particularly Action/Reaction which I've been using in my games for a long time. I really like the define good and evil suggestion. That's something I've never done before, but it seems like a given in retrospect. It's hard to expect people to follow rules when you don't even tell them what those rules are. Thanks for the cool ideas!

  • 03:19 PM - Panda-s1 quoted jasper in post Another Look at the D&D Essentials Kit
I disagree with your opinion that "Lost Mines of Phandelver" is being overused. I have often seen it cited on EN World for new DMs who are looking for a 1st adventure to run with new players (far better than trying to run Hoard of the Dragon Queen for the first time, imo).[...] did I say it was a bad adventure? Lost Mine of Phandelver is a good adventure for beginners; the quality of the adventure is not the issue I brought up at all. to use your example of Keep on the Borderlands: that adventure may not have been the best, but that's not the point. that adventure did not exist in a time when D&D was super popular and your local game store may not have been so noob friendly. D&D in the media was either the cartoon or some sort of controversy; the idea of an accurate depiction of RPGs being played on any show was fairly unlikely, let alone reveal actual info about the adventure itself. now I'm sure some enterprising individuals got a hold of their own copy of KotB to cheat at someone els...

Never heard of "on the tin". But that is what a 3 star rating is for. Does it job. But "Don't impress me much". It's a line from a commercial (from a company that makes wood preserver and similar products). But if "doesn't impress" matches the product description, then the person writing it isn't doing their job properly. They are supposed to make the product sound impressive. It's called "selling".

  • 07:43 PM - Derren quoted jasper in post Mythological Figures: Anne Bonny (5E)
Pss. You make a name for yourself, you get a free level or two. But why did she made a name? Because of her fighting skills? She was described as competent, but thats about it. The same could be said about Rackham. Why the rogue level at all? She didn't really do any thievery or sneaking as far as I am aware. So straight fighter levels would likely be better, although I don't see why it should be the archery variant, unless there are more detailed accounts of her describing her more of a shooter in combat. Imo fighter 4 or 5 would be enough for her. Frankly, as far as pirates go she is pretty unremarkable to be considered a mythological figure. Ching Shih would be far more deserving of an entry.

So this wandering monster of 4 Apes and Bard is brought to you by Pogre. Hey, Jasper! Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! I honestly agree with pretty much everything you said, lol. I'll keep these comments close as I continue to write more guides. Thank you again for your thoughts and feel free to shoot me a message if you have any D&D guide ideas you would like to see made in the future. I'm always open to ideas. Have a great day!

Considering Knock alerts everyone within 300 feet aka American Football field but does not deafen the party, why should firearms do so? https://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/noise-induced-hearing-loss-77421 This was studied on firing outdoors. Firearms discharged indoors are worse due to the sound waves being bounced back by walls and other obstructions. I see no reason why there should not be a temporary deafness condition or permanent for long term usage. If 77IM's firearms can be heard 600 feet away, what of the chap who fired a musket held up to his cheek? One could apply the effects of the deafness spell, save of be deaf for one minute.

One more guess. Hasibro will come to it senses and put me in charge of D&D. You’ve ruined it by spelling their name wrong. :(

I wonder if mythbusters ever tried the exploding barrel trick? Is gun powder packed tight enough in a barrel so it a BIG BANG or is just a BANG and you are ducking flying hoops? There are enough incidents in history where there was a "BIG BANG" as a result of stored gun powder, and enough still extent ruins where the damage from the explosion is observable in all or in part, that I think we can establish that for enough weight of dry, well stored, finely ground and well compounded gun powder, there is in indeed a "BIG BANG". It won't look like a Hollywood explosion (which is typically mostly gasoline), and it won't be as brisant as an explosion from a high explosive, but it will still lift the walls of your star fort into the air or turn your giant man-of-war into a pile of splintered debris.

Um "Chutes" does not translate to American. Please explain. He is American. That aside, he’s masking a naughty word. It’s not “chutes”, it’s something similar-sounding.
