    Not unless one of the characters gives up all of their actions. Try you and a friend (or several) walking down a street while each doing something.     That’s how I took it. Will Byers went through some terrible trials those last two seasons. Also, he’s switched from being a player to being a DM.     Finished A Wrinkle in Time today. Enjoyed it, definitely, though I imagine it would’ve had more impact had I read it when I was younger. Written in the 60s, during the Cold War, parts of it would have come across differently, too. I also finished Moorcock’s Dragon in the Sword, the conclusion of the Erekose trilogy.     Nice article! I missed Planescape back in the day, so much of that early lore is still being backfilled for me. Of the new races, tieflings are probably my favorite. I really liked the whole Bael Turath implied history of 4e’s setting; my first 4e character was a tiefling, too.

    I’d say ask them what kind of things they want to do in the game – do they prefer combat, role-playing, political maneuvering, etc. Players need to learn to share when people have different styles at the table, but it doesn’t hurt to play to your audience as a DM.     Some you could just add - have the dragon inhale after it finishes it's actions on the turn before it breaths. Makes avoiding the breath a little easier. Others the rules have options for - but little to take advantage of them.     I did 3 martial - none of them the (boring) fighter. Each has it's own niche and specialty. And then others. I think that the fighter should be the default, and that one martial enough variation to balance multiple casters types, are both traps.

    I agree. I think a lot of the people are just looking at the "specialized two weapon fighter" case and ignoring the other cases. Like adding the damage together - means that any simple weapon wielder wanting to use both hands an Attack action goes from d8 (greatclub or versatile staff) to 2d6 (two of many d6 weapons) - now equal to the very best two handed martial damage.     I always thought five was the prototypical party size. Four and six are both pretty close to that, making a difference but not a huge one. Three is a bigger difference, seven and eight are even bigger, then two. One and nine+ are so individualistic I won't try to rate them against each other.

    It's a great idea- I try to have the starting list be something "objective," or, at least, someone else's list (like this was). That way, people aren't caught up in a dispute as to what should, and shouldn't, be on the list. If y'all want to brainstorm some way to: a. Have a list of more recent authors (no repeats); and b. Have it be something that won't be argued over (the list is the list); then I'm always game! I agree with Ralif Redhammer above, using the 5E PHB Appendix E with the Appendix N authors removed would be fun. Appendix E is both a better, and yet more uneven list, methinks.

    I think the bigger component of Sandbox vs Railroad is "Know your players". I've been on rails were everyone at the table had a wonderful time. The DM wanted us to do X and X was what we were going to do anyway. I've been in a sandbox (litter box?) were the DM expected us to just go do something and the players were begging for more structure. A railroad isn't inherently bad. A sandbox will not make a bad campaign instantly better. I find my preferred style as a DM and as a player is similar to what Ralif Redhammer said. I try to end each adventure with the question "What do you do next" and that gives the DM a prompt to plan the next adventure. In the end, neither style is better than the other. D&D is about having fun. And if you and your group is having fun playing in the sand or riding the rails, then who cares. :)

    Listen to Ralif Redhammer. Don't just put in traps because. They should be there for a reason, and the kobolds that live there have to live with the traps. That means they can't get in the way of daily life. If they do or would get in the way of daily life, then they would be bypassed, disabled or circumvented by the kobolds themselves. Paths through/around the tripwire and pressure plates would become so regular detecting them would be trivial. As for Tucker's Kobolds... read it for inspiration, but I would never suggest someone actually setup play that way. It's... well, goes back to the days of adversarial DMing and IMO really isn't the best way to create an adventure that players enjoy.

    Igwilly, I think that the murder hobo term comes from the fact that some players are more focused on the mechanics and combat than anything else. Their PCs go from dungeon to dungeon killing and looting only to do it again and again. The kind of PCs that have more GP value in their clothing than the entire kingdom's treasury but don't have two coppers to rub together to afford a night at the sleaziest inn in town. The kind of PCs that cannot even remember the name of the king that sent them off on their quest in the first place and think Monty Haul is their best friend. Ralif Redhammer I proposed a healer that suffered from hemophobia as a character. It was shot down pretty quick.

    ...e, rather than a game-related one. Sometimes there are players who want to play the game, but they have social issues which manifest in the game. I think RPGing probably attracts more than the human statistical norm for this sort of person. Eg they have a tendency to attack or trick other PCs. This is the same person who, in a wargame, always breaks alliances even if it hurts his/her own position. I don't think there is any game-related solution to this either. Then we get to issues that arise from how the game is run - stuff that tends to get described as viking hat GMing, railroading, player entitlement, etc. I think a lot of this stuff results from a combination of (i) a lack of clarity as to what the players are meant to be contributing to the game, relative to what the GM is contributing, and (ii) poor rules, or inadequate procedures/techniques more generally (not all of these are spelled out expressly as rules). I think that this last category is the sort of stuff that Ralif Redhammer is describing as about "control". Communication is one way of solving these issues: different people want different things from RPGing (both in general, and in any particualr campaign/session/moment). I happen to like The Forge's way of describing these differences, but no doubt there are other ways of thinking about the same basic point. As well as communication, though - ie getting clear on who is hoping for what - there is then actually the need to reach agreement (and I don't think there is any distinct magic for RPGing in this respect, any more than working out which film to go to or where to meet up for lunch). And once agreement has been reached, there is then the need to actually give effect to it. This can require both GMs and players learning how to do stuff. At this stage of things, there's no substitute for practice.

MMORPGs have a lot of appeal. Now, I have yet to see the RP side of any MMORPG, but I hope that's just because I'm a n00b to the games. Ralif Redhammer: VRPGs can go a long way toward assisting imagination. What I want to know is: can we take some of the benefits of being Internet-linked with other players, and bring that to our tabletops? Here's another example: Post your PCs' equipment lists online. So when the thief in your party goes to filch something, or breaks into someone's house, the GM has not only the equipment list of things to choose from, but the character who will be out for revenge as well. Just imagine the excitement (for lack of a better term) when one of your PCs discovers one of his valuable items missing! And there's a "real," "live" PC out there who is trying to get away with it. If nothing else, it's a good system for creating a recurring rivalry.

    My take on it is that, if that they can totally have pets if they want. But the pets can’t do anything that requires a check – no tracking, scouting, or fighting. Anything else starts infringing on Animal Companions and Familiars. They exist solely as flavor text. Because I'm not going to be mean and kill off their pet. But ... but ... threatening a PC's loved ones and pets is a time honored tradition! Think of the awesome scene where the BBEG growls out the line "Surrender or Fluffy becomes kibble! BWAHAHAHA!" Of course that may explain why all my player's PCs are orphaned hermits who only interact with other PCs. :hmm:

    It had its moments, but also its flaws. It took the approach of the books, which was very much grounded in folklore, and replaced it with…with…with things like spraying faeries with ketchup!Fair enough. That might be why I enjoyed the movie, I've skimmed through them looking at the artwork but never actually read them so didn't have any prior knowledge getting in the way of watching the movie.

    If I had to pick the perfect horror-comedy film, I’d be torn between Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice. Which is why I'm also very excited about a possible Beetlejuice sequel, though perhaps that is also a bit naive of me. Tim Burton's movies have been on a steep decline in quality, so I'm not sure if I'd even like the final product if I finally got to see it. But I do want to see more Beetlejuice. It is a movie that would benefit well from today's improved visual effects... but then again, Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory shows that this isn't always a plus. Well the good news is even a bad Ghostbusters movie can still earn over 200 million and green light another movie. Maybe they will get it right this time? It's still a highly valuable franchise and Sony knows it. But I think fans have plenty of reasons to be skeptical of any future movies now. The first trailer had better be really good, or a lot of fans may choose to stay at home. It had a great theme song (that just happened to be ...

    I enjoyed the female-led reboot quite a bit. I do think not connecting it to the original two films was a mistake. But completely ignoring it with this new film seems pretty darn tone-deaf in this day and age. I enjoyed the 2016 Ghostbusters, but the only character with the same zany pull as the original three ghostbusters was Holtzmann. (Sorry, I like Zeddemore, but he didn't have the same oomph as the others.) I didn't come away with feeling it was unrelated, just that it was only loosely related. There was comments from the federal (?) official that this sort of thing had happened before and had been covered up / amazed what people forgot. Sort of a nod that the earlier movie(s) happened without having to build on the later movies in the franchise.

    For a while, there was talk of doing a reboot of G.I. Joe, a MASK movie, and a D&D movie, then adding the Transformers and releasing a Hasbro crossover film featuring all of them to create a “Hasbro Cinematic Universe.” Not sure if they’ve cooled on that idea or not, but the projected timeline was years out. The Hasbro Cinematic Universe is still happening, though that is a different thing from the D&D stuff, focused on "contemporary" stuff. Room and M.A.S.K.S. seem to be not happening right now, but G. I. Joe is still happening alongside plans to mix it with Transformers.

    Starfinder is less complicated than Pathfinder, but definitely more than D&D5e. While it moved in the direction of simplification, I know I certainly would've preferred it go farther than it did. That being said, it's got a heck of a cool setting. For me, I think that's the real appeal. Wizards, androids, pulse rifles, undead space pirates all together make for some pretty awesome adventures. Not me, I don't want nor need a simpler game.
