Kalorn nodded at Lorenn as he took out pitons - miracles, someone had them, and Lorenn of all people! - and added - "Well, we did raise a bloody racket, but the dragon isn't here either so... maybe?. Let's leave this here for now, we may need to pass here quickly again later" After receiving the healing magic from Sesto, he answered, somewhat flatly, "Praise be Lathander".. With a bit more...

I really like the basic concept, it's a good idea. For a more "rough" version, you could take eldrich knight with the entertainer background - someone who's failed both the bladesigher *and* the bardic college :D

This should be a simple, inexpensive alchemical item, because we can do this in the real world , no magic required. Prestidigitation could provably do it too.

1 question and 3 comments: Question: are we taking a short rest? Comments: 1: Those troll skeletons surely will help with the front rank tank problem for a little while! 2: Having the players do some NPCs surely can make a DM's work easier. Just keep in mind that skeletons are reasonably intelligent and zombies are *dumb*.

While the others were preparing rituals, Kalorn - taking his time - hacked some steps in the ice us the slope using his hand axes. He grunted at Mord's hulking creations - a disturbing display of power, but he had to admit he wouldn't mind they taking the brunt of attacks instead of him. Would surely impress the ice toads too. His face scowled at Sesto's raising the kobold corpses though. ...

Rodrigo grunted as one hit landed, ducked under a clumsy swing and stabbed at the "arm pit", hoping it was a weak point. riposte vs shambling mound: 1D20+6 = +6 = 21 riposte attack vs shambling mound dmg, has superiority dice added to it: 1D8+6+1D8 = +6+ = 16

Ok, so warhammer is pretty different. First of all armor doesn't prevent hits, it prevents damage (ie it gives you a bit of DR). Same thing with "con" (toughness in warhammer terms), it doesn't give you more hp, it prevents damage. Usually the strength bonus and the toughness bonus cancel each other out, but if you are tougher than your foe is strong (and/or stronger than he is tough) you...

I remember this 3.X game we had an archer (dex fighter essentially), a fighter-rogue, a ranger-rogue, a very high dex mage, a bard and... me, the clucky low dex armored cleric. So everyone BUT one character was moderately (or very) sneaky. So I would have to stay behind, or the...

Getting back to two weapon fighting The thing that bothers me is that the D&D idea of two weapon fighting (an extra weapon = an extra attack, although perhaps at a penalty to hit, depending on the edition) is NOT how two weapon fighting works in the real world. The main goal of having two weapons was to have more options, more range (a long blade for more distant work, a shorter one for...

D&D poison - and I remmember vaguely 2nd ed having such a dichotomy too - is strange because it either imposes a condition (usually the generic "poisoned") and/or hp damage. The antitoxin working on one but not the other is peculiar. As far as I can tell, Rodrigo didn't have a potion previously, but I seemed to have been quite negligent in using the minisheet at the start of this adventure......

If you want to house rule that way this is fine, but the group check is more generous than that - everyone checks using their own check, and if half the party succeeds, the party succeeds.

Use group checks, it's a great feature of 5e. Making everyone make a stealth check individually is almost always guaranteeing failure.

That is unfortunate. I prefer d&d, and 5e the most, but I think that it is very important that we try other systems, because the system impacts how we play. Variety is good, and for some campaigns d&d is not the best system.

I didn't spell it out, but this is what I was getting at. There are many ways of playing. It's ok to prefer one over the other, but it's not cool to insist that an RPG *must* have a certain feature that only fits one style of play.

That's called a TPK. They are very rare, but they *do* happen, and they are an important part of the game. They create tension, danger. The players want to be *challenged*. They want risk, danger. Some games increase this danger further. The players have to be smart, cunning. Like REAL PEOPLE, their PCs know that to enter battle is to risk death. Like most people, the PCs avoid combat...

Yeah, but you said "D&D is an RPG, you want something that support heroics". This imply that the lack of plot armor, that insta-death, is *not* a proper RPG. There are plenty of RPG with those features that are proper RPGs.

With BF pulling out, the only character concept I've seen aside from Chibi Cthulhu from @Voda_Vosa - who has a character sheet - is the 'half-breed doctor' proposal from DarwinofMind Have seen interest but not noticed any specific character proposals from Shayuri, drothgery Also one post each, but no follow ups from: Raivon, Mark Chance, doghead so not sure if they were/are still interested, or just commenting.

Binder Fred: Unless I'm missing something, his Close Attack bonus is only +5--Fighting 3 and 2 ranks of the Close Attack Advantage. Reducing his speed is really on a 1-point Quirk. It's basically a negative rank in Speed. Not Against Animals is probably more of a Quirk, too, although it depends on how broadly you mean animals. Is that anything that's not humanoid, or just mostly-ordinary Int -5 or -4 animals? An even rank in Impervious doesn't do much, so you could save a point there. I thought the Impressive power was mean to go with the armor? That would mean that you should total the points before applying Removable. Dungeon Smasher breaks the PL cap. I'm not sure how you're getting your costs for the attack array. I see what you're trying to do with only some powers being Removable, but I think the sword and quills still come to 6.. ? As for your other version of the Impressive power... Looks like it should be 4 points rather than 3. I think Enhanced Advantage: Fascinate may cover most of wha...

Adoption is possible. Any volunteers, Jemal, DarwinofMind? From the little we know about her, your Bog Witch might be the best fit, DoM... Maybe *Aridha* is the "spirit" that's been pushing you to help the party/the community? ;) Jemal: Well, it's just that transforming into a dragon and/or being able to claim direct blood relation with the leader of the country we're in would seem to be *very big* advantages, things that could simplify your PC's (and the party's) lives no end at various points in any concievable adventure. The consequences not to would therefore need to be weighty enough to counterbalance that, hence my suggestions... In addition and thinking about it some more, if, as you say, you go with "can but shouldn't" (for X and Y reasons), maybe you could negotiate something with SuperZero to the effect that you *can* break cover, show your full might as a dragon without spending any points, but then your charater becomes an NPC after that scene? (Sort of a mega Hero Point w...

DarwinofMind, Scott DeWar, Herobizkit, kinem, FloatingDisc, and pneumatik, I hate to say it, but this game is dead at the moment. One of our players hasn't even posted since November. I would really like to keep this game going though. We have just started a new plot arc and it would be a simple matter to get new players. Scott DeWar, your character looks good to go. DarwinofMind, Herobizkit, and kinem have been keeping up relatively well. Perhaps we could just continue the game from that point. Four is plenty, although we would have a little overlap with both a sorcerer and psion and no fighting class. I will open recruiting for one more plus replacements for any who don't respond to this post. Scott DeWar, here is your mentor for Nadia: Reina Doiran, a female human, is the owner and curator of Cloud Antiquities, a shop located in the Seventh Tower District of Upper Menthis. That's hardly a fair thing to say, you really can't know if they dried up due to the playtest, They gave up on us. During the 2 year playtest, 2 books were published for 4e... Both of them during the 1st 6 months of the playtest. Well, I don't have access to WotC's data, but I was good friends with a game store owner back in those days -- the two 4E books published after the D&D Next announcement sold three copies, total, in his store, and two of them were to me! In retrospect this should have been obvious. Sales of product for an existing edition do decline when a new edition is announced. In 4E's case, there was the added wrinkle that the folks who were most invested in the game likely also had D&D Insider accounts and didn't need to actually buy the books in order to use the material in them, further cannibalizing sales. While I can't say it with 100% certainty, I feel fairly confident that the reason we only got two 4E books after the D&D Next announcement is that they sold so poorly th...

I can accept that, but is it acceptable to you if all that's kept is the fluff? Say a new arcane striker, with that same fluff? I'm not one that gets hung up on number of classes though so maybe others would have a problem with too many arcane strikers. Contrary to popular believe, mechanics have an important impact on fluff. The new, limited wizard should feel like a wizard, even if its spell list is reduced to a single role or two. Therefore, the stuff the new wizard do must be classical things of wizards. If we can have only one type of wizard with one role available, I suppose area damage could go to the spontaneous, innate, on-the-fly sorcerer. However, you could actually have more than one class with the wizard’s fluff. You can separate the classic wizard in a number of classes, with very different powers, and say they just study separate fields of magic. Nothing stops that from being possible. Totally do-able. Heck, character like that doesn't even need to be able to do much of ...

I do love the visual aid, I might be able to stand you game with it, but I've honestly gotten to the point if a game is going to be "theater of the mind" I'm just going to walk out. I need to know what I can do, not guess and have to ask the DM if I can hit more than one. I hear you loud and clear. We usually play (face to face) with a beam projector and the image on a classroom whiteboard or on Google+ with the image on Twiddla, so I and the players can doodle our positions on the picture. Therefore, it is not quite so "theatre of the mind" as you fear. Everyone can usually estimate at a glance what they can do. 89060

I really want a midpoint game... but sadly I feel like I'm stuck in a place no one else will help me. I'm the total opposite of you, I feel like 4e was slightly too much, and 5e is WAY WAY too little. And since no one I know will play 4e with me, sorry to be pessimistic and all but I feel trapped. I sympathize. I dont think we are opposites. Overall I would prefer to play 4e, I think it is a better game than 5e, but I do currently enjoy more rules light nature of 5th ed. But overall I think 4e had a much more interesting take on martial characters, more interesting monsters, more interesting combats, a more logical system of static defenses where the attacker rolls, etc.

You know, honestly I know rules arn't the point of the game... but honestly I'm paying them for rules. They tell me I can run any story I can make up, but then he talks about how they're going to sell me story and keep the rules to a minimum. Like the discussion of the 3e sorc, he felt it wasn't a good class cuz it didn't have a story for why it was different than a wizard. or the 4e warlord he doesn't like the story of that class healing. Shouldn't those things be for the DM to decide. I would rather have a PHB full of rules and not one bit of story. Let me describe how those rules work in my world. Sorry I just listened to the podcast interview with him this morning and his placing story over rules in the books bothers me. Story is more important than rules in the game, but when I want to buy story, I'll buy a novel, when I buy DND I'm buying the rules. Looking just at RPGNow.com I can see 119 different RPG systems. To say nothing of variants, hacks, and smaller systems. If I wan...

I started playing in 2e, I've played a little OD&D but never any 1e, and it's been years and years since I've done any of them so I just don't remember I have frequently heard as a complaint from my friends about new DND (4e) that it doesn't include this rule, and how "Well that's how it always was" (despite some of them starting in 3.x) So I'm not really asking was there an optional rule in the book, I'm asking was it every the default rule that rolling a 1 did damage to you, or a miss hit your allies. Not a default rule. A natural 1 has (iirc) always been a failure on a saving throw or attack roll but has not had more of an impact than that I believe there have been official fumble rules in various editions but normally it has at least included a confirmation roll (so you roll to hit again and if the second roll would hit it's only a normal miss)

Well the game that inspired me to post this, I had cast a ray spell, and rolled a 1, the DM ruled that it struck another PC, (not in melee with the target or in the line of fire) This was then taken as an excuse to attack my PC, I took issue that if the DM was going to be using house rules he should have told us before the game began (I would not have taken ray spells) and everyone argued with me that fumbles have always been in the game I should have assumed. So the striking a party member was in the rules the DM was going by, and the PCs seemed to be in favor of it but they still wanted to get mad at me when it effected them. Okay, setting aside the question of whether critical fumbles are standard rules or not, you appear to be gaming with jerks. Attacking another PC over a bad die roll is the behavior of someone who's just looking for an excuse to give a fellow gamer a hard time. I wouldn't necessarily say you should quit the group over this one thing, but if stuff like this keeps happeni...

I think that's how it's intended, so like an Enhanced Dire Behemoth would cost you 3 wildshapes, But I think they really need to explain that better cuz that's not how it looks. I think if that's what was intended, then "dire" would be listed under one of the possible enhancements. It is a weird oversight, but perhaps they are anticipating other future possibilities.

@Raistrox actually his arguement is always the opposite He argues that the lack of skills (and other rules) makes it impossible to roleplay in 4e. i.e. There's no Craft Skill in 4e so that means 4e characters can never craft This is true of most editions of D&D, and quite a few other games besides it. How did we survive the 80's? Does he only play one game? CH should help enlighten his view if you can talk him into listening. It's a good example of how people actually play the game.

I strongly doubt it. They're fairly meticulous about mentioning such things, when something costs more than normal. Becoming a normal or dire beast just expends one of your daily uses. It's only when you become an enhanced dire shape that it costs 2 uses of Wild Shape - note that it's not two extra uses, just two uses. Total.

I'm definitely keeping the doesn't like wearing clothes thing, and playing with the conflict between her Ilodarian father's naked culture, and her Human mother's clothed one. Then maybe a couple of minions from her father's side of the family (or her actual father/mother?) so you have something to mediate between?

Which is why I've decided not to go with the wings. But I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'm just like if we are using M&M I should at least have something from it. Well, the wings could just be window dressing (vestigial?) on what I'm imagining as a rather cool envirosuited and/or gas-masked alien from a cold, volcanic planet (so you get both degassing and increased gas retention (oh, and feathers were apparently originaly evolved to keep their bearer warm, so nice example of parallel evolution there even you aren't feathered (cold protection leading to flight!))). Your background would then allow you to Power Stunt glide/limited Flight off of her existing powers. Other possible uses for wings: buffeting (*very* strong pectoral muscles), swimming (if of the right type... you could actually be a *marine* winged species, like the manta ray?), for some reason I'm seeing her using her wings to push her whole body off the ground in a dominant posture, but that's neither here nor there :). Being use...

You are presuming earth too much. Well, yes, I was sort of assuming same temperature ranges and gas composition. That said, enviro-suited alien are cool, it's true :) Yes if we lessened the gravity of earth the atmo would leak away, but it would take millions of years... So what if it started much much higher, and this is where it's leaked to now? Multi-century thawing cycle, maybe? A wandering planet with frozen volatiles rather quickly degasing when captured by a chance-met star? Remember though that your atmospheric loss to space may be slow, but you still need at least a good handfuls of million years of the present condition for organisms to have evolved to take advantage of them (ignoring useful pre-adaptations and assuming we're talking natural rates of evolution for the moment, of course). VV can likely give us a better timeline on that: how long *does* it take to evolve wings from scratch, VV? Or beyond that what I was thinking of is, Yes a heavier N₂, O₂ Ar, CO&#8...
