I like using advantage over static mods to rolls. Your list of daily set up looks good. I'm going to have the party leader also set up marching formations for each type of area (narrow, standard, and wide). I don't really need the navigation checks due to an underdark ranger in the party. Choosing between advantage and +5 is an art. Where the adventurers can earn advantage on the roll, you would ideally want to choose +5, so their efforts can be rewarded (instead of "we already got advantage, so no point in making the extra effort"). Where there is no common source of advantage to be had, you can base your choice on other factors: such as "what do I like best" or "matching similar checks already described by the rules". I know the module generalizes areas into narrow, standard or wide, but personally I think more variety is needed to convey the utter dissarray of Underdark passages. I think I'll use three d6 to inspire me when describing any random encounter, where the idea is to fo...

Good ideas! Done! I must confess the DMG is handing out static bonuses even for dynamic rolls. (bonus/penalty for speed on navigation rolls). So I guess your initial idea to give slow foraging +5 is equally valid...

I created this cheat sheet for my game this weekend. Thought I would post in case others found it useful. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14F3QaNMh60AxGgJ-EXV95mJ8bp-UHmpA8gVDuxTq8Vg/edit?usp=sharing Thanks! Suggestion: add the DMG rules for going without food and drink to the spreadsheet? Also: since foraging is an active check, change the bonus you have currently chosen for improved foraging (+5), which is commonly associated with passive checks, to "advantage", which is the game's standard bonus for active checks?

Day 8 During a rest period, a mad Stone Giant named Grondurr wanders into camp. His madness is "Being drunk is the only way I stay sane" He has an Alchemy Jug in his possession, which he is drinking beer from. If the Alchemy Jug is stolen or taken from him, he will attack to get it back because he knows that when he becomes sober, he will go insane. I *love* this. I will definitely use this. Day 20 During travel, party comes across a wide area, lit by Faerzress. An 18 inch ledge skirts one side of 80' deep ravine, party's speed slowed by half for the day DC 10 Dex save to avoid a fall. Precautions allow characters to make save with advantage. You have inspired me. I will use the same ledge set up, but the 'ambush' is waiting for them as they get off the ledge. The first PC will be outnumbered and unable t move far (assuming tied together), as more PCs come off the ledge the sides will get more even. If nothing else, OotA and the Underdark are getting me to think of new and ...

I should clarify. Not healing potions, which you can buy. The wonderous ones in the DMG, which you cannot. Oh, well... That could still have some slight balance issues but you are the DM so it's up to you.

Tangent, but I think I might make potions not consumable. Instead, the vial is magic and refills after a certain period of time (like a week or something) That would disrupt the balance of potions by a lot, players would most likely not by potions and a lot of potions would become almost worthless if the players got them a second time.

The Darklake is a rough place. Just began pre-rolling the random encounters and 6 chances per day for a random encounter is a big change from the 2 per day in the caves. I'm not seeing that? Pg 51 says "after a long rest roll a d20; on a roll of 17-20, an encounter takes place." Where is the 6 random encounters per day specified?

Any thoughts on having a ranger in the party with Favored Terrain: Underdark? I'm wondering how much it should alleviate the survival part of this adventure. A ton if your group is going to be very stringent with rations.
