@CleverNickName First, you don't need 10,000 columns, you need exactly 400: one for each of the 400 possible combinations, which have a perfectly even probability distribution. Second, the math (or logic) error you made was to assume the benefit is equal to the delta between the two values. 50% of the time the higher value would have been the result even without Advantage, and thus there's no benefit. Imagine two rolls with Advantage: The first produces an 8 and a 16 The second produces a 10 and a 4 You might say, "That's an average of 7 (8 + 6 / 2) better!" But if we take the first number to be the result of the "first die", that is, the one you would have rolled if you didn't have Advantage, then it didn't help you on the second roll. So Advantage gave you a bonus of +8 in the first case and 0 in the second case, for an average bonus of 4 not 7. If you integrate this across all 400 possible combinations, it's the same as just dividing your result in half. EDIT: Yeah, this is effectively w...

First, how awesome is that? (Very.) Second, has anyone ever tried to run such a thing before? Do you have any advice? Do you know of any 5E resources that I might be able to use? 1. Yes, it is very awesome. 2. Okay, so first thoughts- a. Gamma World has a long and storied crossover history with D&D. There are number of mods and conversions. Here's a few- https://www.deviantart.com/araknophobia/journal/Dungeons-and-Dragons-GAMMA-FIVE-561426013#comments https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwuSfRCk45kzMG9BRDFGOTlINkE/view There's more. GW isn't "in space," but if nothing else, this might give you inspiration. b. Try looking at some Star Frontiers conversions. Not quite to the same level as I've seen for GW- http://frontierexplorer.org/data/FrontierExplorer011.pdf (collecting articles- gives you an idea for space stuff!) And then Monte Cook has that Numenera 5e space thing-y coming out? http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?657303-Monte-Cook-Games-Announced-I...

The rogue's sneak attack ability has always felt weird to me ever since we stopped calling it "backstabbing." Well, we stopped calling it Backstab because that sounds like it requires facing rules.
  • 10:36 AM - 5ekyu quoted CleverNickName in post Sneak attacking undead and constructs seems wrong
The rogue's sneak attack ability has always felt weird to me ever since we stopped calling it "backstabbing." I'm always looking for ways to fix it. I think the worst version of Sneak Attack was 3rd Edition. It was just so inconsistent and unreliable, only working when the DM let it work (by controlling which monsters you encountered), with a laundry list of conditions to trigger it. Then I found the houserule in Unearthed Arcana that let you trade your sneak attack ability for fighter bonus feats...I loved that. I think I ended up using that houserule for every single rogue I ever played in 3E and Pathfinder. It's a lot better in 5E since it affects all creatures equally, but it just feels dull to me. I'd prefer a different effect, something a little more versatile and colorful than just extra damage (stun, slow, poison, etc.). I haven't seen anything yet, though, so maybe I'm the only one who thinks it's boring. To me if you want a variety of effects, call up a battlemaster-rogue build.

  • 11:48 PM - Mistwell quoted CleverNickName in post Here Are The Most Popular D&D Feats (War Caster Leads The Pack!)
Maybe I'm a little late to the discussion, but are we talking about 3rd Edition rules here? In 5th Edition (PHB 190), you can draw or sheathe a weapon in tandem with either your Movement or your Action. That Action can be making an attack, casting a spell, disengaging, channeling divinity, wildshaping, whatever. Strategically dropping your weapon isn't really a thing anymore (unless the king's bodyguards insist.) Yes but you cannot do BOTH on your turn. You get ONE object interaction and he's talking about dropping the weapon (free action) and then picking it up (single object interaction on your turn). If you sheath your weapon as part of spellcasting, you no longer have it in your hand after the spellcasting. So for example you will not be able to make an opportunity attack with that weapon if it comes up, until you draw your weapon again on a later turn. And of course if you draw it, you won't be able to sheath it on that turn. The only way to really avoid this is the war caster feat.

I almost included a bit at the bottom that read, "EDIT: This is meant to be tongue-in-cheek; I'm just poking fun of myself and the idea of what a Grognard is" or something like that. But I decided nah, people will get it, this is obviously one of those outdated list-gags that used to go around e-mail in the 90s...because grognard, lol. Maybe I should have included it after all? :D Nah, I'm not taking myself seriously. We're all arguing about something unimportant for the fun of it.

Are we really going to go down this road? Clearly. This attempt at discussion chilling is noted. Let's compare things shall we? Not actually concerned with one guy who probably did deserve it, we all saw how he posted.... /looks at what was just written, recognizes the social currency forever spent... :| Some comedians are complaining about how they can't tell the same kinds of jokes they used to, workplaces now have mandatory sexual harassment training, the Pope is no longer denying but actively speaking out against sexual assault within the church. [musical notes and sing-song voice] One of these things is not like the other... [/notes and voice] And yes, I do think there is a connection between some modern political movements and Maoist China. For me it's more a connection between the progress movement and Modern China with it's Social Credit Score. Thankfully we aren't there yet... or... wait... I hope that no further awards to Zak or forthcoming... ...

I learned monsters were real when I was 13, and I didn't learn it from fairy tales. You know what? I should have stopped reading right here: That was my cue, and I missed it. Goodnight everyone. I just want to say that you two, as well as others like Hussar and Danny, were/are having, from my perspective, a pretty meaningful conversation in a very respectful way despite being on opposite ends. It is a conversation that I wish was had more when these kinds of topics arise.
  • 08:09 AM - Celebrim quoted CleverNickName in post What the heck is going on with the professional RPG industry in regards to Zak S?
But we are turning a social corner. People on talk radio and television can't stop talking about how things are changing and how confusing it is. Some comedians are complaining about how they can't tell the same kinds of jokes they used to, workplaces now have mandatory sexual harassment training, the Pope is no longer denying but actively speaking out against sexual assault within the church. Maybe it's not a full 90-degree turn, but society is definitely changing direction. Oh that? No, that's not changing direction. That's marketing. That's not even something worthy of applause. That's an example of losing the plot along the way. Let's avoid getting into the Pope, as if we didn't have enough to discuss. Let's just say that I'm proudly a member of a community that has been protesting the Catholic church for like 400 years and leave it at that. If you feel sad, maybe take heart in that. I take heart that a few notable well known figures got what they had coming, if even by ac...

  • 01:46 AM - MNblockhead quoted CleverNickName in post How Did I Become a Grognard?
There's probably nothing more grognard than some old curmudgeon like myself arguing over what a grognard is. In that spirit... Ways that I'm stereotypically a "grognard": 1. I prefer to play without a battle mat. Lots of discussion about this already, but I'll give you this. 2. When I must use a battle mat, it's hand-drawn with wet-erase pens. Real grognards use rulers. 3. I still draw my maps on graph paper, with colored pencils. 4. Whenever I look up rules or monster stats on the fly, I use the physical books. I'll give you these. 5. I call them "modules," not "one-offs." Module is just what TSR called an adventure. Most old-school modules were not designed to be played in a single session, other than RPGA competitive convention modules. A one-off was used for any single-session adventure that was not part of any ongoing campaign. These would generally involve pre-generated PCs that were designed for the one-off. 6. Monks and dragonborn are not a thing. I'll give you...

That was me, not lowkey13. The sun blade is the second-most Paladin of all the swords, what with its radiant damage, bonus against undead, and that whole light-dispelling-the-darkness vibe. If the Holy Avenger is the paladin of swords, the Sun Blade is a multiclassed paladin. :-) Clerics use swords, too!!! What with all the 1e/2e thinking? Sheesh!

  • 10:12 PM - Morrus quoted CleverNickName in post Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond
These statistics are interesting, but I wonder how representative they are to the hobby as a whole. I'm active in three different 5e gaming groups, and only one person uses D&D Beyond. He's the one who plays a human warlock of The Fiend. The rest of our stats don't match this at all: we're all about elves and half-elves mostly, nobody is playing a fighter or wizard, the one rogue is a Swashbuckler, and the lone sorcerer is wild magic. So I have to take these graphs with a grain of salt. While nothing is perfectly representative, I would say their 9 million characters might be more representative than your three gaming groups. I expect DDB takes your stars with a grain of salt. ;) I find it bizarre that in 2019 we still have to say “anecdotes are not data”. Their data isn’t perfect, of course. But it’s not an anecdote.

Early in 5E our group would not have been to far form this. Recently we have branched out more into the advanced option and MCing concepts more than the classic 4 classes or even the specific subclasses. It has been a while since I have seen a life cleirc but its definitely one of the better PHB clerics/cleric in general.

  • 04:45 AM - FrogReaver quoted CleverNickName in post Cantrip House Rule
It's probably a little bit power-heavy, but only playtesting will tell you for certain. If it gets to be a problem you could always pull back on the levels of spell slots (stopping at level 5 spells instead of level 6, maybe.) I don't think I'd like it though; it's a little too fiddly. If I were going to swap scaling cantrips for more spell slots, I'd make it a little simpler. Something like giving the character one extra spell slot at 5th, 11th, and 17th levels (when cantrips normally would scale), and the spell level of the new slot can't exceed the character's proficiency bonus. But that's just me. To me that sounds like it's not enough compensation. It's not a perfect comparison but looking at the single target daily damage you can output with scaling cantrips at tier 2, that's pretty significantly under the what any level 3 spell could do at those levels.
