Interesting point: if the player's score is lower than the character's score, asking for a specific approach borders on unfair. While I wouldn't accept "I'm rolling Survival to find out more about the tracks," I would accept "I look at the tracks to get more information." I was thinking that it's clearly an Intelligence check to use tracking training to learn about tracks, and then I saw...

The player, until she makes the game less fun for other players. The point was that I didn't refer to player failure, and I didn't say that the game depends on players pretending that they don't know. I'm sure part of the point was that some of these posts use extreme examples, unnecessarily. Although I did enjoy recycling "complete idiot" to more useful ends.

There's an important consideration here, at least for the characters who aren't complete idiots: trolls that are capable of speech are probably smart enough to know that fire-prevention is a good idea. Are you defending metagaming? That's not assuming that adventurers are complete idiots. That's assuming that adventurers don't exist. Because, really, what's the life expectancy of...

Haven't you ever played Final Fantasy? Once an enemy flees, combat is over. There aren't any bow shots, no magic missiles, no point; the opponent is just gone. Which is really lame from a player's perspective, but it seems like the intent of a designer who writes "flees at 10% original HP." As for a formula, just record all the damage dealt in one or two rounds. You'll need at least that...

That was my sentiment. I don't think that vampire-unpopularity is a problem though, because Hollywood can pretty easily pop something out and turn that around. I'd pay to see Gary Oldman in Dracula 2. Just sayin'.

Bloodthirsty PCs, much? You'd better help out your excellent adventure module writer by giving the villain a nice failsafe - like only she knows which well a PC's family member is stuck in, or the villain's thrall lights an orphanage on fire somewhere if she dies. Yup. The PCs sure captured the villain. The adventure is won! Now let's finish him off...wait, is he WEARING A MASK!?

I can't say that I would complain about a '90s anything. Heck, the closely-related '80s zeitgeist is working nicely for Stranger Things...but anyway. You might scare away other communities by referring to the WoD community as "toxic," but I'm sure you're just making a point. An indie game is no longer stuck in obscurity once you pick it up, so that's not a problem. I do, however, see a...

Sure, sure. Infinity makes any other amount look like zero. Or actually zero (not sure). I see Schrodinger's Pie as a finite one. And you don't know how much control pie the GM has until the players have their pieces. BTW, didn't know Schrodinger was so into role-playing! Is that ratio upside down? Also, does it mean that free games have a fun ratio only if they have an upkeep cost?

Oh. Then I guess my chart would have a footnote describing player agency as "GM-like control over plot and setting." At 100%, all players share this control, and there is basically no GM. At 0%, players just roll dice and Matt Mercer tells them what happens. I like "guide," personally. :) Which is why narrative control lies at both ends of the spectrum. You can give players all...

C'mon. Some players are already afraid of doors and paneled floors. You're going to add graduated hallways to that, too? I like the trapped alcove/recess idea, but I'd go with a simple lever: putting weight on the "floor" of the recess pushes a lever behind the wall, which has a spike on it that pops through the mysterious hole in the recess design...at just about heart level.

I feel obligated to defend Truenaming since I mentioned using Tome of Magic earlier... Not sure where you're getting the "additional layers of die rolls," unless you're referring to the requirement to make a Truespeak roll, which isn't any different from a fighter making an attack roll. The tricky part about Truenaming was the DC increasing by twice your opponent's CR. As far as I could...

Opposing d20s aren't terribly wild unless you're using degrees of success. Head over to anydice.com and check it out. I don't see a good reason for fighters to have a grappling edge. If anything, the non-fighters have just as much experience trying to escape grapples as fighters have experience starting grapples. Since Inspiration still needs love (as far as I can tell), you should allow...

What about after writing them? I wouldn't be too interested in a Modos RPG game without adding some modules - something for psionics, an encumbrance system, maybe steal some ideas from Tome of Magic. A grid-free miniatures rules-module would be cool. I like some gobs of cookie dough tossed in with my vanilla ice cream :)

Well then. We've just found a justification for this: As far as this goes, This is pretty easy. Since NPCs suffer no handicaps until they reach zero hit points, the tortured balks at all attempts prior to running out of hit points. "'Tis but a fleshwound!" Then, the poor soul conveniently fails every death save.

As a non-GURPS player, the idea of making a "300 point build" sounds pretty intimidating. So, Bill Stoddard? Me, I'd love to get into a game of Zweihaender, but the rules overwhelm me. It's like this: to make a check, just roll d100. But it has to be under your score, not over. But every ten points of success is a benefit. But sometimes you switch your dice, and your 47 becomes 74. ...

That's good. I notice that D&D has a breakdown of what DCs should be in five-point increments, which is much better than stressing over the difference between a 13 or a 14. Still, I find it odd that DMs have to ask themselves "is there a roll needed here?" or "would a roll for this auto-succeed?" I prefer just to let PCs tell their share of the story, and when it occurs to me that MY version...

Sure, there are exceptions, but if a DM is spending time assigning different DCs to different characters or determining DCs for rolls that don't even need to be made, that DM is spending less time enhancing the narrative for the PC. I really hope that a PC is thinking "hmm, now that my hands are on this 'unclimbable' wall, the rock feels much more slick than I thought it would be. This could be...

So you got 'em to GURPS? Congrats! Just had a thought, when dbm mentioned range penalties: since D&D 5e is a sort of 3.5e-lite, could 5e be a precursor to a 3.5e reboot? Is WotC already trying to get players to GURPS, or in this case, 3.5e when it was at its full, glorious, bloat?

This is, stated in the rules or otherwise, a GM's job. But I think there's a turning point, when managing the rules FOR the players becomes counter-productive. There are also the players (like me) who will want to know and use the rules without GM assistance, because there's the possibility that the GM says he knows the rules, but doesn't. Still, that's another way to get to GURPS: hold the...

Long-time players (or just friends?) can develop some pretty strong preferences. Were they averse to any new games, or just HERO? Could be any reason. The GM has a preferred game, some players (but not all) want something crunchier, or a new game was released that doesn't look like it would be easy to dive into, but is appealing nonetheless. I think the players, or lack thereof, are...

DMMike started a thread How do you get to GURPS?
Recent ENWorld comments like these beg the question: how do you condition your gaming group for increasingly complex RPGs? I use GURPS as the titular example because it's the first system that comes to mind when I think of the sheer number of pages and books dedicated to rules and tables. The answer, in GURPS's case, is "one book at a time." But what if you have a different end point, or...

  • 08:03 PM - Omegaxicor mentioned nijineko in post running multiple quest lines simultaneously
@Storminator I have never seen anyone use "Frex" but it works. I have kept that in mind and since the player's didn't do anything to defeat the Necromancer (he was steamrollered during the Giant War) the village thinks it shouldn't pay, unfortunately the party assumes this sometimes and misses a valuable reward but that is up to them @nijineko I will look into that but then the emphasis falls on to me to keep track of the timeline stuff... @koesherbacon What do the "constant" players think about travelling the mountains and then reverting to the village they were in several months ago (where the other group left off) and then next week they have no benefit...I must have misunderstood what you mean because that makes no sense...

  • 12:12 AM - Greenfield quoted nijineko in post 1001 Uses for an Immovable Rod
Create a mini construct that has the sole purpose in existence of clinging to the rod and pushing that button. The construct responds to a key word, specific user, or mental command for the psionic types. Connect a rope, or if you really insist, a whip to the rod. You can now throw out the rod and perform the Swashbuckler Swing™ at will. Suggested keywords: "Tally ho!", "Have at thee!", "En Guard!", (long ululating yell)[for the jungle themed types]. Variation on the theme: The Sky Hook. Fit the rod into a tube with a small spring device built in. Attach a rope. The rig is set so when there's tension on the rope, the rod is immovable. When the tension relaxes, it can move. Now throw the rod high into the air and yank the rope tight when it reaches a place you like. Climb/swing/hang on the rope any way you want and it's locked in place. As soon as you let the rope go slack it releases and you can reel it in. Give it something like a three pound trigger threshold in the spring an...

i would think with an int and wis in the range postulated, said individual would skip steps 6 through 8 in advance, possibly step 5 or 4 as well depending on personal perspective. after all, aren't most cats you've seen already at step 9.... hmmmm, that might be a little scary, actually. I was probably at least partially inspired by Krosp.
  • 02:34 AM - Random Bystander quoted nijineko in post best uses of awaken spell?
best use? maximized and empowered. Hmm... Step 1: Be a housecat statue. Step 2: Have a maximized, empowered awaken cast on you. Step 3: Gain an average Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma of 23.25. Step 4: Be an Awakened Housecat Statue Druid. Step 5: Gain levels. Step 6: Army of Awakened Housecat Statue Druids. Step 7: Ok, fine, some of you can be wizards and clerics. And, ok, rogues, fighters, rangers...Paladins? Wait, what about our army? Step 8: Realize you're trying to herd cats. Step 9: Find sunbeam. Someone make this happen in a campaign. :)

  • 03:43 AM - Umbran quoted nijineko in post Advice for a Old West game system
my votes would be for boot hill and/or deadlands. Note that Deadlands has several incarnations. The d20 version... don't bother with it. The Savage Worlds version is supposed to be decent, though I have not played it. Given that Deadlands Classic is the ancestor and progenitor of SW, I would expect it to translate fairly well. If you want all the fiddly bits (especially for combat) - go with Classic Deadlands. There's more to gunplay in this system than you'd ever really want. I recently ended a 5 year Classic Deadlands campaign - any question, feel free to ask.

Welcome! I got completely side-tracked with a thought: Forrest Gump of the Forgotten Realms. He somehow becomes immortal and is there for every Realms Shattering Event. • 08:05 PM - Cleon quoted nijineko in post Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters
by not much, i meant not much 3.x specific (comparatively speaking). and it's not 'an' approved website, it's "the" official 3.x source for mystara, as in the one and only as per wotc. seems like you're familiar with it, so i won't mention the other official sites that you probably already know about for your other threads. The way you phrased it made me wonder whether there was some 3E-only Mystaran site I'd never heard of that WotC had approved. Also, I think there's quite a lot of 3E stuff on Vaults of Pandius, it's just scattered around a lot and mixed in with other-edition and non-edition material. Most of the stuff I look at is the monster conversions, obviously. The edition-free stuff probably has a much larger page count, admittedly.
  • 03:09 PM - Cleon quoted nijineko in post Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters
did you happen to look at the official mystara 3.x site? (not much there, honestly, just curious if you did) Which Mystara site are you referring to? The Vaults of Pandius is an approved website that I often rummage around in, but it's multi-edition site rather than 3.x and there's an awful lot of stuff there rather than "not much".

the list of "published by wotc" and "all official wotc material" are not the same. the former is a smaller list. You sure about the former being smaller? Planewalker.com and Dark Sun did a small handfull of sourcebooks. I'm not even sure if the other 3rd party "official" sources did anything close to 200+ books combined. I included Dragon/Dungeon magazines. I also included Dragonlance because I own the books, but most people do not consider any of the 3rd party stuff like that to be official anyway since so much of it is broken and all over the place. The magazines are a little more tolerated, but even then people do not allow them in games willy-nilly for the most part (at least compared to published WotC books). Your original post sounded like you were disappointed, which I find amusing. The amount of sources that I covered for this project has not been compiled into a single source like I have done. not going for every wotc official source, but rather going for the smaller list of published by wotc? that's too bad. Smaller list of published wotc? I really have no idea what you are referring to. :p It took me 2 years to make this index which includes 201 3rd edition books, 72 issues of Dungeon Magazine, 89 issues of Dragon Magazine, the Dragon Annuals, Dragon Compendium, and every web enhancement WotC put out. That's a small list? :.-(

  • 11:03 PM - Celebrim quoted nijineko in post Break DC for Magic (Wondrous) Item?
Here is the best off the cuff extrapolation I can give you: Given that there is no indication (that I can find) that any dragonshards are in particular different hardness or hp from each other regardless of type, comparing the two example shards and doing the math gives us a base hardness of 10 and a base hp of 15 per inch of thickness. Reasonable from the RAW, although I will note that if the DM is interested in realism, for most materials both hardness and hit points increase linearly with thickness. The thicker the object, the more likely it is that it will absorb an impact by dissipating the force without sheering. While magic weapons and armor increase in hardness and hp based on the +1 through +5 stat, other magic items don't seem to give any guidelines. However, I have seen it elsewhere proposed, and find it perfectly reasonable to take the caster level required for the +1 through +5, and apply the same increase in hardness and hp based on the caster level required to creat...

Or you could simplify it and not bother with the per-item thing and simply say that minor is equivalent to +1, medium to +3, and major to +5. As for the lantern, it would have the same break dc a...
