Reading the tweets about the Verdan, it sounds like they turned Antifa into a Goblinoid race that is appearing everyhwere. I'm sure the Elves of Evermeet will be thrilled mutating Gobliniods just appeared on their island. They should like Woke version of the Hill's Have Eyes Mutants. I tease. What does the Goblin Gods think of these mutate Goblins? Fighters (rerolling hit dice on a one or...

I wasn't taking about another starter set, but a full on campaign box set, which is a very different beast from a starter set. Might not have an adventure for example, it'd have updated lore, a big map of Faerun (maybe Toril as a whole), info on various regions, the target audience would be not be newbies (although perhaps it would be presented in a newbie friendly fashion), but rather...

I agree 100% instant buy for me. But what should be in it? A Campaign Guide, a large detailed Map of the Forgotten Realms, at minimum Faerun, but bonuses for Kara Tur and Zakhara, super duper bonus for Maztica, Osse, Katashaka, Archome, and super duper mega ultra bonus for having a map of Abier (or the Shadowfell or Feywild) on the flip side.

You don't need campaign setting maps, campaign setting DM screens for that, so if it was for starter sets, why ask about that? It's because this is for Campaign Settings, not starter sets. Also why ask if it should have a basic rules booklet if it's intended for started sets, without that it's not a starter set, so there would be no reason to ask that. Wizards doesn't need a survey on...

WotC doesn't own the rights to Osirion, Mummy's Mask AP, or Golarion, so they can't use them. And Orision and FRs Mulhorand (and Bakar) are radically different settings, I mean both have Egyptian themes, but the history and story of the settings are hugely different. Orision is a story of a nation that is rebuilding it's sense of self after regaining indepence from a being a colony...

The FR DoD is the only one that matters, the rest are just prototypes. In 5e FR is the core setting, why would they shift it needless from their prefered setting when the fullest version of DoD is already set in FR? Secondly part of what makes DoD interesting is it's impact on FR evolution/history. There is no reason to set it in Mystara instead of FR, where the most recent...

DoD is not setting agnostic, the modules that inspired it are, but DoD is based in the forgotten realms, DoD is Forgotten Realms canon, and in fact DoD largely caused the reshaping of the Eastern Part of the Realms. Old Empires Source book was written because of DoD and between the two books there were massive implications for the Eastern half of Faerun. Mulhorand, Unther, ect... Were...

I'd prefer that they fill out DoD with something new. However Old Empires book had some small adventures. Alternately Imaskari were masters of portals, and extra demisional spaces, so it doesn't actually have to be in a desert. Still let me think on this.

There is more then 4 that you listed as the different types of Agnostic you listed have hugely different implications, and even more that you haven't touched upon. Gods are non-sentient, like forces of nature, that would suggest an almost psychological approach to divine magic underlaying the mystical observences is rituals that shape beliefs. The reasons I think that they will do Desert of Desolation are: 1: They want to explore beyond Midevil Eurocentric areas of the realms, this qualies. 2: If for FR 3. It's a chance explore desert and wildness rules for 5e. 4. Its extremely popular.

It occurs to me that the real issue is that no one can agree on an objective criteria for assessing if sorcerers or wizards are best. Also why compare the Sorcerer to the Wizard at all, why not compare it to the Cleric, the Bard, the Fighter, ect...? Are Sorcerers supposed to fill the exact same roll in the party as the Wizard?

In Cormyr resurrecting the King is illegal, and the raised King would no longer be allowed to remain King. When this became law I don't know. A lot of laws would exist to regulate powerful magic realistically, so that economic and social chaos does not result fromnabusing certain spells. Just like counterfeiting money is a crime, using magic to mess up the economy would be banned or regulated.

It also mentions Tako. Playable Tako would be different. At the very least the aquatic them might suggest Tritons, Genasi, Lizardfolk, and Sea Elves as plqyable options.

Interesting, I never noticed before, but the Celestial Pact Warlock IS closer to a Thuergist, especially a Celestial Tomelock. Not perfect, but much better then cleric or Wizard. But switch the magic from Arcane to Divine and add some kind of Henosis feature. I still think that Thuergist would work better as it's own class, one without spell slots, but instead based on Rituals somehow. Note...

I think those who would design a Theurgist subclass should at least take some time to learn about Theurgist practices in the real world, just as a reference. As some studying actual Theurgy Wizards being Theurgist seems wrong. Thuergist should be it's own class, a Theurgist is a Neoplatonic Philosopher Priest.

Alternate none Ranger class Ranger would be Arcane Archer, with the Ritual Caster: Druid feat and maybe magic innate feat: Druid. You'd end up three Druid Cantrips, 1 regular Druid Spell, and a bunch of Druid Rituals, fighter abilities, and magic archery.

I'd love to see Shadow Magic, Storm Magic, and Divine Soul for Sorcerers, Horizon Walker, Gloom Stalker for Rangers. Because it's so iconic FR Purple Dragon Knight might be in as well. It all depends on how hard it is to impliment subclasses. For Races I think Aasimar will be in because I think they tie to the BG: DIA book some how, which is why they don't count as PHB +1 for Season 9.

Agreed, some spells would require technology that doesn't exist yet. Like Major Illusion. But most PHB classes, races, would be do-able, with a few having to add a substitute feature for tech reasons.

  • 06:13 PM - Draegn mentioned gyor in post Gods and Divine Magic
gyor Perhaps emphereal was meant to be ephemeral? Ephemeral has been used in fiction to refer to "temporarily immortal". The Highlander film series is an example of this, immortal until your head is taken. I have this in my games where if a player were to gain enough strength and ability, he or she, could duel a deity to the death. Of course this is extremely difficult to do. More often or not it is one deity killing another. With regards to mortal deities are rather apathetic, a mortal is nothing more than a little creature flittering about in the world. One can ask, pray, call upon them for aid. However, one must be respectful and appease them through proper ritual, use of litany or liturgy. Thus common people more often or not are seemingly ignored. Actual people capable of calling on divine assistance are limited only by the measure of their faith and piety.

  • 04:25 PM - Mercador mentioned gyor in post Baldur's Gate III Announced; Powered by D&D 5E
I wonder if there are two kinds of people, with the difference illustrated by the announcement of a new game: 1) Those who will look at the available evidence and precedents and conclude that it's probably going to be terrible. 2) Those who will look at the available evidence and precedents and hope that it's going to be great. With Larian experience, I lean on #2 but I'm not as optimistic as gyor though I wish the same as he. If it is as good as D:OS2, we're golden. But I think expectations are already too high. I don't expect seeing gameplay until next E3 now..

...mances from Penny Arcade, and the One Shot and Campaigns podcasts on the One Shot Network. Taken in the aggregate, all of these shows have something in common: They’re all pretty white. While women are well represented in the most popular actual play experiences, people of color are not. In fact, the team behind the Critical Role Kickstarter may be the least racially diverse group of the bunch. “Nobody is ‘turning’ on critical role,” writes a TTRPG podcaster. “If you think that pointing out that things could and should have diversity especially with the ability the cast has to promote it is ‘turning’ on them then i really don’t know what to tell you. ppl have been pointing it out for years.” By and large, the tenor of the conversation is that the folks behind Critical Role are good people. They’ve done incredible work to carve out a niche for themselves, and in so doing they’ve helped legitimize the hobby of role-playing. But they could, and should, also do better. So, gyor, if your models for diversity are Japanese or Indian cinema, well, I really don't know what to say. No one is "getting out the pitchforks". It's a comment that yes, as a public entertainment, some of us at least think that diversity is important. Is CR doing well? Absolutely. Does that mean that they get an automatic free pass just because we like them? Nope.

  • 03:16 AM - Nevvur mentioned gyor in post How would you RP an evil druid?
Bitbrain - Thanks for guiding us to that article! I'll second your recommendation. gyor - Love the hell druid concept. Awhile back I was examining unlikely class/race combos, and the tiefling druid presented immediately. This would be a plausible background for him. As for the OP... Motive and methods are both important considerations. I made a mid-level NPC druid oriented toward swarms and disease as the Big Bad for a low-level one shot. They were the most effective tools for addressing an aggressive push to colonize a land he held in stewardship. It made him an extremist in his own circle, but he escaped punishment and went about distributing plagues til the PCs caught up with him. Do you ask because you're looking to implement something in a game, or is this more just picking the forum's brain?

  • 05:02 PM - Ralif Redhammer mentioned gyor in post 4.33 Years in: What Now for 5E? (and have we reached "Peak Edition?")
Yeah, Pathfinder 2e is a very different beast, and from what I’ve seen, already dividing the Pathfinder fanbase. Which, really, was unavoidable – their whole design was based on staying the same and just giving people more of that thing they liked. Unfortunately, that pretty much baked bloat in as unavoidable. But, back to D&D. As gyor said, social media presents an unparalleled avenue of D&D experience and advertisement. The Stream of Many Eyes was an experience never seen before, and I’m super-excited for the eventual next one. There are so many ways to experience D&D, not just as a game, but as a culture. Pathfinder 2e, unfortunately, has a major identity crisis. It’s wavering between wanting to make itself approachable to new players, and wanting to retain an existing fan base that revels in complexity, and it shows. I do think it’s going to push WotC to up their game, but I don’t think it’s going to drive anything close to an edition change.

Like gyor said you can find the episodes on YouTube a few days after they air but with Twitch specifically it’s a little more complicated. The show itself (live & past broadcasts) are found on the official DnD Twitch channel. The after show Talk Pact is found on the SavingThrowShow Twitch Channel-which is the one it sounds like you found. Just head over to the DnD channel and look under Past Broadcasts and you should find it. Hope that helps.

Just a bit of context to gyor's point about the settings and the survey that WotC did. The survey in question was asking what settings would people like updated. It wasn't really asking if people played in one setting or another. The survey was, to some degree, kinda self selecting. If you didn't play in any of those settings, it's unlikely you would answer.

  • 06:18 PM - Satyrn mentioned gyor in post 5e needs a Faiths and Avatars style book
This is where polytheism is being confused with Christianity. There is no "uniform" for a priest of Corellon, holy days depend on locality, there are no standardised rituals, and very little in the way of hierarchy. Each temple would have an autonomous high priest, and he/she would have a few acolytes. Appropriate offerings are "anything the god likes" so in the case of Corellon, singing, mostly (and all temples need cash for maintenance). Well, if your right that this is the way Correllon's priesthood works, that seems like the perfect sort content for such a book would provide: "There are no standardised rituals to celebrate Correlon, etc. . . here's a couple examples of how Correlon is worshipped in the Dales, and here's how Corellon is worshipped (and has his name spelled) . . . " So, yeah. I think you're making the case for this book. It's just a shame for gyor that we're not in the TSR era because then there would be a spot in the schedule for it. Because the only reason we won't see this book is the very simple "it doesn't fit in WotC's publishing strategy."

Kobold Avenger - Mearls has mentioned making a Warlock with an Elder Brain patron gyor - I'm not sure I'd like to see a Paladin oath that deals with psionics. I mean the other oaths are thematic: Vengeance, Devotion, Crown, Conquest, Redemption... I suppose the Oath of the Ancients is semi-similar in concept to what a Psi-oath would be like. I'd think the oath would have to be something like "Awakening" because you're awakening your own potential. As a DM I'd force any Paladins of this to probably be part of a religious order associated with Psionic deities.

  • 02:17 AM - Matthia05718273 quoted gyor in post New survey from WotC about boxed sets
I wasn't taking about another starter set, but a full on campaign box set, which is a very different beast from a starter set. Might not have an adventure for example, it'd have updated lore, a big map of Faerun (maybe Toril as a whole), info on various regions, the target audience would be not be newbies (although perhaps it would be presented in a newbie friendly fashion), but rather major fans of FR. Also remember WotC is hiring consultants on various none European inspired FR cultures. Sorry I didn't phrase my post very well. What I meant is that even if this boxed set was a campaign setting, I'm not sure how much more incremental value it would add compared to the products currently released. So let's say you're correct and it's a FR campaign box. The lore would have to be spread out over the entire world, otherwise it's just rehashing the stuff already released in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. And if it's the entire world, they need to spread it thin to cover everythi...

  • 04:14 AM - Parmandur quoted gyor in post New survey from WotC about boxed sets
Wizards doesn't need a survey on starter sets, they have a ton of sales data and they know the basic requirements of starter sets by now. Plus they have four starter sets right now, four. R&M starter set, Stranger Things Starter Set, Starter Set, amd Essential Starter Set. How many do you think they need? Anymore more things can they tie into? I agree. The Essential Set is coming out in the next few weeks and they showed people the contents already , and the R&M is probably already set. My guess is that Target is eager for more boxed products, and they can't really do too many more Starter Sets. The time might be ripe, co...

  • 10:17 PM - Matthia05718273 quoted gyor in post New survey from WotC about boxed sets
Perhaps this is a hint about an Forgotten Realms campaign box, like the old Grey box, but for 5e. It did ask about campaign setting maps and campaign setting themed DM screen. Eh I'm not sure if that's the case. Both the current Starter's Box and the upcoming Essentials box are for FR. Obviously WotC could make another FR box (FR has such a long published history that WotC could launch content for it until the end of time), but it wouldn't add too much incremental value over what already exists for 5e. I think Lowkey13 is more on the mark about what they're working on. Greyhawk for a boxed set makes complete sense to me for a starter's set, and would be picked up by people who already own the current starter's set but also want Greyhawk 5e content.

It's literally showing the city of Baldur's Gate in the trailer. But otherwise yeah, BG3 naming was a cynical act because it's not a continuation of the first 2 or even BG dark alliance. But I get why they did it. Really I don't care that much because I'm more interested in what it is, then I would be in an actually continuation of the original games, it's the first proper 5e game in the current realms. That is exciting. There's also the fact that it's coming out 19 years after Baldur's Gate 2. Making it a direct sequel that relied heavily upon familiarity with the previous installments would make it pretty inaccessible to those who've never played them. A new story in a similar vein, with some nods and easter-eggs to the originals, seems like a far better option.

The FR DoD is the only one that matters, the rest are just prototypes. In 5e FR is the core setting, why would they shift it needless from their prefered setting when the fullest version of DoD is already set in FR? Secondly part of what makes DoD interesting is it's impact on FR evolution/history. There is no reason to set it in Mystara instead of FR, where the most recent version is set. What does any of this have to do with Ravenloft? This thread was about a home game, not any theoretical product. However, if they did do a Saltmarsh style book with DoD, it would probably be setting agnostic given the original nature of the module, with sidebars for adaption to specific settings like FR or Eberron.

Were massively altered because of DoD from Ed Greenwood's vague idea of these places and fleshed out. There are references to Mulhorand, Imaskar, Durpar, and more. It was the first adventure in FR and I think it was the second FR book published after a novel. It has huge setting importance to FR. Whoa, calm down there FR fanboy. The original modules in the series I3, I4, & I5 very clearly tell you right on the covers that they are the Desert of Desolation series. And I quote: "The 1st module in the Desert Of Desolation series." "The second module in the Desert Of Desolation series." "The last module in ...

I'd like the 3.5e Binder back with it's original creepily more. Making it a type of Warlock just didn't work, it lost all it's flavour. What a great class. And it should be restricted to a certified role player that can act and is not a power gamer. I jest about that last sentence. But that is a class that screams being able to switch personalities and act.

The last one that was any good was Storm of Zehir expansion to NWN2, every single one has been aweful. So I understand the Skeptism, but I look at what has been said, and look at Larian's rep and that makes me hopeful. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is good (better than SoZ). Siege of Dragonspear isn't bad either. It's just the ones WotC has had it's paws in that have been poor...

I believe the Dawn War is still D&D canon for 5e. I know Primordials are referred to as still existing in the Forgotten Realms modules (specifically Storm King's Thunder), but I think the Dawn War itself is mostly limited to the 4e pantheon being labelled as the "Dawn War Pantheon" in the DMG as its sample pantheon.

5e style leveling is in, but it's causing them headaches. "Dungeons and Dragons’ leveling system is too slow for Baldur’s Gate 3" Given how even official adventures eschew the xp guidelines, and basically level up after specific chapters, I am having trouble seeing what the problem is. Or hand out twice the default monster xp, or whatever. What I'm really interested in is, didn't those old AD&D games, including Baldur's Gate, follow the official xp amounts? I can't recall ever hearing this complaint against 5E before. That you level up too slowly. Did you level up faster in AD&D?

So I understand the Skeptism, but I look at what has been said, and look at Larian's rep and that makes me hopeful. Other than the Neverwinter MMO (which was more or less meh) and Sword Coast Legends (godawful), both of them from rather subpar developers, has there been any other D&D video games since NWN2? I recall D&D video games as a whole just dying off after that ...

I guess we will see, although we know they are not forcing it out early. They seem to have a pretty tight deadline for November 2019 and two years is a pretty short development time for a game of this type.

It might not have every feature I want, but I do think at minium it will have the PHB stuff. They have already said they won't have everything from the PHB - you quoted it yourself. Honestly having all the Gods that are AL legal is more important to me then having every sub/class/sub/race from everybook in the game. The original Baldur's Gate didn't have any gods as part of character creation. NWN2 and Pathfinder: Kingmaker are the only games I know to feature deity selection as part of character creation.

This really has no precedents, people keep comparing it other games, but the technology, Stadia, the sheer number of developers, and combination of the FR 5e setting with a Larian has nothing comparable to it, not BG 1&2, not Pillars of Eternity 1&2, not Owlcat's Pathfinder: Kingmaker, not Planescape: Torment, not NWN1&2, not Tides of Torment: Numenera, not Swordcoast Legends, heck not even Larian's own Divinty: Original Sin 2, is comparable, because none had the kind of resources this game does, in fact COMBINED they would likely have less resources then what is being devoted to BG3. There is no precedence for a D&D CRPG with the kind of budget and resources that a top AAA game like the Witcher 3 or 2077 Cyberpunk gets, nothing like this before, all bets are off. None of that means that the game is going to be loaded with every single feature that you seem to think it will. Even if this were an AAA, it would still not likely have as much. That just too fantasical.

Maybe a fourth part and a Map of the Old Empires region too. Given that the main problem with the third part is the difficulty in designing adventures for very high level characters, I don't think it would be improved by a Part Four. However, since the adventure starts at around level 5, a Part Zero could be added. I would be all in favour of broadening out the region to make the plot feel less railroaded. The entire area would be easy to set in any campaign setting (it was originally setting agnostic), including real world ancient Egypt.
