Morrus started a thread Secret Faces of Velsburg
Secret Faces of Velsburg. While traveling through the wilderness the adventurers come across a small hamlet plagued by a recent rash or murders committed by 'The Ghost'. The longer the party stay in Velsburg however, the quicker they realize that the supposedly bloodthirsty spirit preying upon the settlement is not the remote village's only mystery. In this sidequest to save Velsburg the PCs are...

D&D Beyond has provided yet another of it's data dumps of 12 million characters -- this time telling us character alignments are most popular in D&D. Chaotic Good wins, followed by my least favourite as a DM, Chaotic Neutral. Chaotic Evil is the least popular. The developer does say that this does not count the percentage of characters with no alignment selected. You can see the...

The Swedish 1990's-set sequel to Tales From The Loop is now available from Modiphius. Based on the paintings of Simon StŚlenhag which portray a "retro futuristic suburbia", Things from the Flood takes the 1980s kids and makes them 1990s teens. Somewhere out there beyond the cordons, beyond the fields and marshes, abandoned machines roamed like stray dogs. They wandered about...

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

Morrus started a thread Let's Talk About THAC0
I feel like THAC0 gets a bad rap. It's the precursor to 3E's Base Attack Bonus, and came after 1E's attack matrices. It's actually super simple. The important thing to remember is that it's the exact same math, but in reverse. In 3E-5E, you roll d20 and add a bonus in order to beat the target's AC. In 1E-2E, you roll d20 in order to beat THAC0 minus AC. So instead of adding a number to...

The story of Third Edition D&D starts, perhaps, with Peter Adkison reading 2nd Edition AD&D (1989) and being sorely disappointed. For one thing, he felt the new system left several underlying problems in place, so players didnít get much benefit from the effort it took to switch to a new system. For another, 2nd Ed stripped away all the charm and character of 1st Ed. No more half-orcs, arcane...

  • 05:20 PM - DEFCON 1 quoted Gaming Tonic in post I guess Jon Schindehette out. Bad news for D&D NEXT?
When Jon says "Additionally, I’m looking for a position that allows me to pursue some of my other passions unfettered" that is what I take from the statement and other things I have read from other people who have left the team. Creative types might want several outlets to express their creativity and not have Hasbro lay claim to all that they do. This has been the explanation of Monte and Stan! for why they left, and I would imagine Cordell's as well (although I do not remember hearing him say that specifically.) I imagine this must be a Hasbro-mandated rule when it comes to working there full-time... and it's a bitter pill to swallow if you are not willing to plunge head first into the "D&D all the time!" body of water. Fortunately for WotC, there is no shortage of people who are probably willing to jump down that rabbit hole to work on D&D, and thus they can replace those folks with cheaper and more single-minded alternatives.

  • 02:02 PM - Neonchameleon quoted Gaming Tonic in post [Warlords] Should D&D be tied to D&D Worlds?
I guess I just don't see the statement "we're doing different HP modules for different styles of game, such as a module to get people up to full HP faster, and a module to play in a low or no-magic game, and some other HP modules, too" as the opposite direction of the playtest packet. Whereas I see the direction of the playtest packet as "Non-casters get even less useful stuff than they did in 3.X". A dex 20 thief specialised in balancing literally needs 20 or more on 1d20+1d6 to walk a tightrope. I can't remember if it's this packet or last that made knocking the cotting pin out of a wagon a DC 15 check but there was certainly a DC 15 sabotage a wagon issue. The fighter literally gains no new potential abilities after level 11. And what's considered a powerful feat (+1 to a stat) might be really useful to a caster but does almost nothing to help a non-caster at managing their weaknesses. For all these reasons and more I expect almost nothing to make non-casters like the warlord cool -after all th...

I...have no reason to believe from any of that different options will not be supported. WotC and the design team are well aware of what the warlord, and similar non cleric refresher characters meant to a group in 4E. They have provided a bit of knowledge here and there and I don't want to say too much about any of that for various reasons but the time of low fantasy, non healing D&D is going to arrive in a little bit because hard working people sought the feedback of game loving players and put it all together the best they could to make as many people happy as possible. Good to hear. That works against the whole "if there's no warlord class, then WotC is abandoning non-magical healing / 4e fans / martial characters / etc." narrative, and so pretty much matches what I expect. It'd be nice to see the proof in the pudding, there, so that it's not just "trust us!", but that lines up with what I imagine. So if this is right, the OP has little to fear. Even without a warlord class, WotC has no inte...

  • 11:40 AM - Morrus quoted Gaming Tonic in post Ranking Superhero Movies: EN World's Top Ten!
I can keep you busy adding super hero movies if you want but I hate to create work for you. Consider Kick Ass, Dr. Strange 1978, The Phantom, The Shadow, Green Hornet, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield 1989 (David Hasselhoff), Condorman 1981, Sky High, Steel, Meteor Man. I have seen them all, good, bad, ugly, sequel. A list of worst movie may really get people talking about the bad ones. Btw, I actuallly liked the Phantom Movie, and Rocketeer. I'm only familiar with a couple of those - Kick Ass, Green Hornet, the Hasslehoff SHIELD movie (to my regret), and I think I remember the Rocketeer.

  • 05:38 AM - Celebrim quoted Gaming Tonic in post How would you RP this character?
I am more concerned for whoever is running this game and the other players. A character with such a low rating in Charisma will be a hindrance almost all the time, not just to himself but to the party. His low Charisma should cause such a distraction that eventually a large amount of the game should focus upon it. This will cause this one character to suck up so much of the story time that the other characters might not get their fair share of time in the spotlight. Add on that the character is a Chaotic Neutral drunk and the problem is increased enormously. Most of that attention will not be in a way that advances the story in a way that the DM and the other players intended, or much at all. All of this is quite possibly true, and thing that a new DM should be aware of. There are several possibilities though: a) All the players at the table are of the Thespian inclination, and so there is little they relish more than a bunch of melodramatic play. Everyone else at the table has a characte...

When characters like this are introduced in a game I am running or especially playing in, I question why I wouldn't just go find a swordarm, mage, priest, etc., that was much less flawed to accompany on the group on their missions? Oh because the character is controlled by another player. Well that a...

The number cruncher type gamer couldn't get a leg up like he could in some systems. Well, what would such a gamer *expect* coming into a superheroes game? What's the #1 big thing about bog-standard superhero comics? DEATH IS RARE. Permanent death even more rare. The point of supers stories isn't to ask the question, "Will the hero win?" Instead, the question is, "How will the hero win, and at what cost?" Number crunching so that your hero wins quickly and easily kind of misses the point, then, because the answer is, "Quickly and easily, and at little cost." Supers is a genre where the aim of building a hero for outright effectiveness is apt to be less rewarding than building a hero for dynamically interesting action.

Yeah, as a GM I loved it. Really simple to make characters, and generally made sense for comic books. Not a simulation of the characters, but of the genre. Very true. I found the char gen rules were fine. Some of the more complicated powers (iron man's multi-missles, hulk's emotional damage = strength) I struggled to keep track of, but otherwise it was fine. I've chimed in before: the event structure wasn't my cup of tea. I get the feeling it was a mandate from Marvel, but the Civil War ticket was so old by then. I still believe it might have said something to do with the lack of Alpha Flight material, and I am not even Canadian. Yeah I'm Canadian but I can't seem to get into the series. It's Canadian heroes as told by either Americans or by Canadians trying to sell the CBC version of Canada. "look, it's a native guy who's magical and wears buckskins". Meh. Then replaced by Omega Flight, not bad, but led by USAgent?! Ouch.

... I think that the story arc angle and the game being designed for players to play established and pregenerated Marvel characters is where they guessed wrong. Most players I have ever played any RPG with groan at the thought of a pregen character. Gamers are a creative bunch and want to create their characters. There were character creation rules but they were really light on explanation and that might have been a stumbling block for other gamers. While I can't speak for everyone, these are the reasons I wasn't a fan. To be fair, the story arc thing didn't bother me all that much. It's not that they weren't railroads (they were), but I rarely use published adventures anyway. The character/character creation thing was a serious problem for me. I need real character creation rules, not make/pick a catch phrase and arbitrarily assign a die type. Additionally, the entire system regarding experience points and milestones. Not my cup of tea. But I have to assume they, to a degree, saw this coming...

Johnny I was always a Danny fan, as I got into the character in the 90s. He started a standard 90s grim-and-gritty but his refusal to kill differentiated him nicely.

The license for the Marvel Universe is pricey and the sales didn't justify renewing it. I think that the story arc angle and the game being designed for players to play established and pregenerated Marvel characters is where they guessed wrong. That's pretty much, what I meant, yeah. Most players I have ever played any RPG with groan at the thought of a pregen character. I wouldn't go that far. I mean, at every gameday we hold, pretty much every character is pregen. I've seen several different campaigns start with pregen characters and take off without problem. The issue isn't with pregen - I think the issue is with characters you cannot "make your own".

There were character creation rules but they were really light on explanation and that might have been a stumbling block for other gamers. Agreed. My players balked at the idea of pregens. And there were precious few random powers. You needed to design mechanics from scratch to make characters which required knowledge of the system and some competency and comfort in game design. They partially fixed this with a PDF random character generator, but there was still a limited number of powers. They were also handed a huge movie to use as cross-promotion and absolutely failed to capitalize. They should have had a movie PDF with all those characters and related villains and some other big Aven...

  • 07:35 PM - epochrpg quoted Gaming Tonic in post My Barbarian Ninja
I like seeing that the versatility to combine options so far is working well in this edition. This is not the typical build and has some advantages but also leaves a few things on the table because of the mechanics, Rage and Deflect for example. If you are okay with it than I say game on. Some people will sit and calculate this damage over that damage as in two handed weapon vs. two weapon but I think deciding on what works for the "character" is the way to go and that is usually how I make my characters. If we always just build for the toughest combination then variety quickly falls off. Well, actually, it all has to do with "reskinning" the action. One way of describing the effect of her rage, or 'battle trance' is that she is AUTOMATICALLY deflecting all the attacks (which is why she takes half damage from them) since Deflect is just some damage reduction anyway (which uses a Reaction, which you can't do because you're raging; but you also could say you can't deflect something twice, and...
