Introduction:
I want to learn how to play whatever TRPGs are being played in the Colombia County, N.Y. vicinity.
About Me:
Whatever TRPGs are being played in the Columbia County (Hudson, N.Y.) area...I want to learn how to play those. Even if it just be a single session. Initially, I just want to see what is going on in the area, by playing a session at your table. Great Barrington, Mass. is also within reach.

In years past, I have DMed or played BECMI D&D, 2E, and 3E. I recently DMed a one-player campaign using the Pathfinder Beginner Box. But my player moved downstate for his work. :(

I own True20 RPG, Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, Dragon Age RPG, Ryuutama RPG (a Japanese game), and The One Ring RPG, but haven't gotten to see them in action yet.

I'm interested in all TRPGs...D&D/PF...Savage Worlds...Fantasy AGE...anything.

I also aspire to cultivate connections between our local TRPG tables. Some kind of Columbia County Tabletop RPG Club?

    But I want to experience 3e No clue what changes they have made though so a largely unjustified assumptionTrue, though Dungeonosophy 's addition of Tieflings, Dragonborn and Warlocks doesn't bode well... :) There's a lot of that in D&Ds history, it was trying to get away from the D&D Cleric / MMO healer steroetypes, I'm sure. Taking a support role and calling it leader, however, is pretty much flat-out misrepresentation. Better, perhaps, to actually call the role 'Support' or 'Foundation' or something equally as descriptive of what it really does, hm? To me a feat cost would make class dipping much harder. Anything that cuts down on, or eliminates, class dipping is worth exploring. Simplest answer, of course, it to outright ban any character from having three or more classes (in 4e-5e; in 3e it'd have to be four or more to allow for two starting classes and a later prestige class). Easy enough to explain away in the fiction: a character only has so much time to devote to ongoing study, training and practice and can't maintain it for more than two classes.

    @Polyhedral Columbia I was thinking about your suggestion to make Spelljammer phlogiston its own plane (in addition to ethereal, etcetera). It can work. Essentially, the Phlogistonic Plane has to be moreorless the same thing as hyperspace. It has to be, because the ships must be traveling faster-than-light to reach the farflung worlds. In this phlogistonic hyperspace small distances within this plane equate to vast distances in the material plane. Looking into hyperspace, I was disappointed that there is almost no reallife science behind it. It is mostly a technobabble plot device to get characters from one solar system to an other that is lightyears away. I was surprised there is virtually no science, because hard science fiction writers invented hyperspace and utilize it in their stories. I was also surprised because there are comparable reallife science, such as wormholes and so on, to travel lightyears away. Anyway, as a plot device a common trope is, strong *gravity* disrupts the hype...

    The above is for Polyhedral Columbia. Not sure if you've seen that one, but it is a pretty nice world map. Nerath is a continent or region within which is the Nentir Vale, not the world. Don't think the world has a proper name.

    Polyhedral Columbia well you brought something up here, with your mentioning of the Curse of Strahd one shot. There are some roleplayers who do rather Horror stuff than D&D. But Ravenloft is a thing for some of these. I cannot say how many Players are out there, that got this preference, but it could be that there is enough (combined with the regular D&D folk) to make it a financial success. This is a thing which other settings do not offer in this way.

    Polyhedral Columbia Ahm Ravenloft is not a planet as such it is a demiplane to my best knowledge, I doubt there is Ravenspace and Portals to Ravenloft are usually 1 way only and that is in. Eight main realities? Did not know about that one, what is that about?

    Like Mercurius, I was surprised to see such low physical stats. And like Polyhedral Columbia, I was surprised by the lack of allusion to Achilles's rage. But anyway, the personality traits seem to be missing. Achilles is a great warrior, but there are other great warriors in the Iliad. What distinguishes literary/mythological peronsalities tends to be their character. As a starting point for Achilles I'll suggest Ideal: Glory; Bond: Patroclus; Flaw: Pride.

    DnDPhilmont, you seem like a fascinating character, but you're gaining a reputation as "that guy who posts threads making outlandish demands for the future of 5E, as well as suggestions for products that few people seem interested in." I had to go through you post history, but I was able to confirm that you were the fellow who wanted every gaming group to write, edit, format, and publish a "nigh-professional quality" guidebook to their tabletop campaign world. Moreover, most of these threads seem to go the same way: first you post your esoteric suggestions, then the conversation turns to a philosophy lecture about the merits of Free Culture, then you speculate about the mental life of your critics (and sometimes accuse them of being corporate shills to WotC). ...Did you come here from Something Awful? :uhoh:

    Wow, what a list. A lot of good ideas there, DnDPhilmont, although I agree that some of it is rather specific for wider publication. I also see a "quantity over quality" approach, and is largely doing exactly what you say you don't want to see happen - reinvent the wheel. I'd rather see WotC: 1. Create a "Classic Worlds of D&D" product like you mentioned a few weeks ago, and then update a few of the more popular classic settings to their own standalone books (e.g. Realms, Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Sigil in the 5E MotP). 2. License out the settings that they don't want to do anything with to other publishers (e.g. Dragonlance, Mystara, Ravenloft, Birthright, etc). 3. Re-issue and update the classic adventures in hardcover omnibuses. 4. Take a "less is more" approach to splats ala Paizo and create fewer, but better, supplement books. 5. Focus on new world(s) and adventures. My problem with your approach is that it is largely focused on stuff that's already out there, in print or PDF. I totally understand...

    O'rly... I had not heard of that rumor.... If true... that just got interesting for me.... Sorry to disappoint but it isn't a rumor, it is an idea that DnDPhilmont posted a thread about and has been bandied about by a few folks over the years as a dream book. If they are newbies, I really don't expect them to do anything BUT play published adventures - it's not like a newb is going to take a setting book and start generating whole new adventures. It's what I did, its what most of the guys in my gaming group did when they started out when they were young. The only one a setting book would benefit are existing players, and they already have enough material existing for the time being until WOTC gets past the release of the three core books this year. If the newbs are playing through the whole Dragon Queen Saga in less than six months to a year, that's some dedicated play! Yeah, I get that, but there should at least by the option for newbies to veer a bit away from the tracks, and have support t...

    Take the 4e DMG, add magic items, and you've got 320 pages (or pretty close). And, actually, they could do worse - the 4e DMG had quite a lot of good stuff for the new(-ish) DM. Certainly, it was better than the 3e version with those endless walls, doors, and floors! :) (And the less said about the 2nd Ed one the better.) My favorite part about the 2E DMG was the class designer. I know, it didn't work great, but it was fun and that's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see more of (and is generally what DnDPhilmont is getting at here, I think).

    @DnDPhilmont Yes, I reported her to WotC for suspected IP infringement. Guilty as charged. As owner of The Piazza, I have a duty to protect the integrity of the forum I run. Had I not done so when I became aware, it would invite questions as to whether and to what extent my forum protects IP thieves, which in a worst-case scenario, could result in messy (time-consuming and expensive) legal action. It might also get a forum shut down. I'd also have reported her to the other copyright holders whom I believe have had their IP used without permission, except I don't have the relevant contacts there. I understand though that other people have since made them aware of the situation. You might be interested in noting too that Bruce Heard (who actually wrote a huge amount of the stuff being infringed upon) is very upset over this, as present copyright law stops him from writing with that IP. When the original, still living, author himself can't use the IP, it makes no sense to defend the "right" of third...

    Furthermore, to grow the player network even more, I'd suggest the sacriligeous but humble route of WotC simply adopting Pathfinder Second Edition whole cloth for AD&D 6E. Just relable it D&D 6E and add in the "missing" iconic D&D races/classes (including 1.5E Unearthed Arcana): Tiefling, Dragonborn, Svirfniblin, Drow, Warlock, Warlord, Cavalier, Acrobat. Why does everybody always suggest this, I don't get it at all. You think Paizo wouldn't sue? You think WotC would blindly trust and copy Paizo?

Better to title this article: Solasta: Crown of the Magister "Fifth Edition-Based" Video Game Coming To Kickstarter Just because the game company can't say D&D doesn't mean EN World can't. Saying "Fifth Edition" as a shorthand for "Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition" causes a bit of confusion considering the number of games who are currently in their fifth edition or launching a fifth edition.

    Your first line... WotC adopts Pathfinder Second Edition more or less in whole cloth. haha (Just adds Tiefling, Dragonborn, Warlock, etc.) ...makes this a game I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole. That said, you're really on to something with some of the rest: Produces gigantic telephone-book sized series of reference works, right out of the gate: Spell Compendium 6E (all the spells from all editions), Encyclopedia Magica 6E (all magic items from all editions), Monstrous Compendium 6E (overseen by ENWorld's Echohawk!) Alongside the D&D Multiverse meta-setting, each DM is encouraged to build their own campaign setting from the start, instead of shoehorning everyone into the Forgotten Realms. For example, all proper names in the 6E Starter Set are enclosed in brackets: [Phandolin], [Neverwinter], [Oghma], which signals that you're supposed to choose your own name. And there's an appendix in the back with a table of alternate names to randomly choose from, and suggestions for how to inven...

    ha - this is great. I grew up near Ronceverte, West Virginia where John's tunnel is - the statue in your photo is in a turnout at the roadside above the tunnel. My uncle authored a booklet about John Henry - one of our ancestors worked with John in the tunnel. I love John Henry - he's a representative of all of humanity. Rage against the machine! Im from West Virginia too. Glad to see another of us playing the game!!!

    Two things I would add. 1) Aragorn. The AD&D ranger class itself is directly inspired by Aragorn / Strider from the Lord of the Rings. The 1e AD&D Ranger even had a special ability to use crystal balls - a direct mimicking of Aragorn's mastery of the palantir / seeing stone. Specifically in regard to Drizzt, the Aragorn archetype is also seen in how Drizzt is the misunderstood guardian of Icewind Dale, in a similar way that Strider is the misunderstood guardian of Bree-land. 2) Unearthed Arcana. The Unearthed Arcana multiclass options were also a factor in the birth of Drizzt. The Crystal Shard was written in 1988, which was the 1.5e era. Unearthed Arcana was the core 1.5e book. And the option of drow rangers (and cavaliers) was one of the salient features of Unearthed Arcana. Multiclass options were limited back then, and the option of a drow ranger was one of the weird/cool features of the 1.5 era. Surely this stood out in Bob's mind.     That is really cool. Does your flat world or campaign have a name? The Broken Lands. There are numerous large craters which marred it's original shape. The craters are from falling stars used as weapons in an ancient war (stars are huge arcane lanterns on the inside of the sphere that contains the world and it's air). The shapes of the land and seas were altered as a result, marking a major change between the Ancient World and the modern world of "the Broken Lands". It let me go wild with the map :)

    Yeah cool - regardless of whether it's an old fashioned feudal fantasy world, D&D may be around for several (or many) more generations, and there are only so many D&D campaigns still in existence which extend back to the OD&D foundation. I hope, if the stars are right, that your vintage collaborative world (a kind of social artwork) might find a public venue, for the record. Does it have its own world map? Yes. We were miniature and board game wargamers. Naturally, it's a hex map done at 30 miles / 10 leagues per hex. The world is flat of course and you can fall off the edge. The world was originally much smaller (with no edges to fall off), it was a campaign map for miniature gaming and it had to include all the usual suspects on it in an area small enough to have a map based campaign which would produce miniature battles. When I moved it to D&D I expanded it to give a reasonable amount of room for all the races / cultures I wanted in it. Needless to say there are similarities to many historical...

    Hey R_Chance, any chance you'll publish your truly old school campaign setting? Do you have a website? It's old and I like it, but then so am I (I turn 60 this month) :) I don't think it's in any shape to be published without far more time than I have to get it ready. And I've never considered doing so. Nor do I have a website. I've spent well over 40 years running it, expanding it, reworking it, updating it to new editions, and so on. There are parts of it that are still OD&D and parts that are updated to 5E and everything in between. Plus a lot of home brew stuff. A lot of what is updated depends on my players. What they want to do, and where they choose to go. It's a sandbox with adventures inserted into the larger framework. I am looking forward to more time to work on my game (and play) when I pull the plug and retire in a couple of years. Right now I have a city map to re-do (graph paper, a 42" wide roll of it).     "Most of us" refers to those of you who were of the generation who cut their teeth on OD&D and AD&D in the mid-to-late-seventies. The situation was different for those us from the next generation who began gaming around the time of the "golden year" of 1983. The release of the first three Mentzer boxed sets simultaneously in 1983 (Red Box Basic, Blue Box Expert, and Aqua Box Companion) birthed a fairly large segment of gamers which stayed with BECMI D&D all the way till the end of its run in the 1990s. I was one of those. Born in 1974, I was too young to have experienced the OD&D and the early AD&D era. I remember when I was a little kid, my two older cousins (who were girls!) once guided me through a Basic D&D adventure (in retrospect this was the Moldvay set), but I didn't understand it. Fast forward a few years...the Red Box was magic to me. I admired the Easley-cover AD&D hardbacks in Waldenbooks, and would flip through them every time I visited, but the small font and dense rules looked too da...

    Hi - I'm trying to find an existing D&D race or "monster" which basically looks near-human, but has red or pink skin. Is there any such thing? It could be from any D&D setting - Spelljammer, Planescape, anywhere. Do you not have a GM Wand? Based on what I saw in the movies, Sith were just humans with face paint. So, there you go. Go old-school and grab the Fiendish template from 3 ;) That probably allows for altering appearances.

    Yeah, well said. Right...the Phlogiston Plane would be the Hyperspace of the D&D Multiverse. Exactly! Still, how would you keep the existing lore about the details of the surface of the crystal spheres themselves? Some are very detailed...like there's beings who walk around on the crystal and stuff. Would this be happening in the Phlogistonic Plane? If you have to drop out of Phlogiston in order to enter the crystal sphere, how would people be able to interact with stuff which lies on the inside surface of the crystal sphere? Maybe the immediate inside vicinity of the crystal wall is the "Border Phlogiston"? In either case, if you're not in the Border Phlogiston or Deep Phlogiston, you just see black empty space at the edge of the solar system. (?) But if you're in the Phlogiston Plane, you see all the cool weird crystal wall and flat pools of radiance, as described in Spellammer. The radiant, flat "stars" on the crystal sphere are only a 2D locus for the 3D stars which lie far distant in the Mat...
