Ezequielramone #4 Please post how you resolve things for your classic DS campaign. I am absolutely curious about your houserules. How did you convert Halfgiants and thrikreen? What psionic System are you using? Does every Player character get a free psionic feat at the start? How do you integrate inferior weapons and armor? Breakage? How do you rule preserving / defiling? How do you rule elemental clerics? Do you use Warlocks for Templars or clerics?

Ezequielramone #34 thank you for your great post, i do agree on your opinion on DS 100%. My thoughts on this if i wanted to convert this to 5e so far are These: Human: Standard nonvariant Mul: Halforc reskinned Advantage on Exhaustion. Halfling: Stout reskinned Halfelf: Standard but no charm res, has to get soemthing in return Elf: Woodelf but reskinned Dwarf: The dwarf Sub that gets +Con and +wis reskinned (Focus) Half giant: TBD dunno any good solution without adding Attribute boon > 20 combined with a malus for balance Thrikreen TBD eventually partially dragonborn reskinned (Poison bite instead of breath weapon), reskin natural weapon multiattack as 1 attack Templar: Warlock (Tome) definitely Warlock. The Tome as a Focus might be something else maybe a ring or a seal. Chain and Blade pact are not so fititing Elemental clerics: eventually shaped Domains eventually FS (Sorcerer but Wis based ) with restricted spell list eventually Warlock with elemental prince as Patron. Def...

Like Ezequielramone the game I ran that hit the highest level was Rise of the Runelords and even that was a single session at level 17. 3e and 4e were just unwieldy to jump that high for a limited campaign. But I could imagine doing a high level 5e game, since the numbers are smaller and there's no assumed magic. Plus character abilities are more restrained.

Mmm I sold a LOT of forgotten realms products from ad&d that never used also selling lot of 3.5 FR books. Now I keep only things I use or have plans to use. I think that maybe, following your idea, Dragon Kings* is the book I have to choose. For sure I have read it but I don't think that book offers options for the type of game I want to run in Athas. Probably in the future I'll use some ideas as narrative hooks or scenes. But not for players or tracking enemies progress. *In dark sun you can transform yourself in a dragon (evil wizard), an avangion (good wizard), elemental spirit(cleric) or spirit of the land (druid) after lvl 20. And that's like not the game I think of when thinking about dark sun. Yeah I own Dragon Kings, never actually used it either.

My favorites: Tome of beasts and Creature codex, two awesome books full of ideas and FUN monsters with interesting abilities. Tal Dorei Campaign Setting: even if it is "standard fantasy" it is one of the best RPG products or there. IMO it does great with giving you a solid world but also has empty rooms for your to fill. It is full of fantastic ideas. Stronghold & followers: we don't have the final version but we get an idea. A new layer for the game we love. Wyrd and wild: dark wilderness fantasy There is another book I don't remember the name, critter compendium or something like that Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex from Kobold Press- Excellent monsters that are on the slightly more powerful side for their CR MT Black adventures- He has many to choose from and some are better than others. I enjoyed Shadows on the Long Road and Beneath the Ruins of Firestone Keep the most. Tal Dorei Campaign Setting- I don't know if I will ever play in the setting, but it is well written. Tomb of Tib...

  • 07:22 AM - MNblockhead quoted Ezequielramone in post DISCUSSION: Have you ever had to boot somebody from a game?
He only cared about being the most powerful and screamed at other players when they did something fun instead of something tactical, he even read the adventure in advance in order to know better what to do and where the lot was. (emphasis added) If I had a player doing this, I would be moving treasure locations and switching certain NPC motivations. Add in some NPCs, encounters, and traps not in the adventure. I wouldn't change too much, not only because why make a lot of work for myself because of a McSpoiler in my group, but because having 98% of the adventure the same, with just a few critical plot items changes would drive a player like that nuts.

I totally support Dragonlance. Right now I'm running a dark sun campaign. It is freaking inspiring. I'm running the original campaign (freedom, road to Urik, arcane shadows, etc). I can tell you, it is the best campaign I ran so far. My players love it, they are engaged with their characters, the setting and the campaign. If you can catch the feeling you will be ok. Also there is a lot of work out there to adapt dark sun to 5e. The way the adventures are organised lets me lot of space to do with wherever I like. Mostly used to add parallel quests, personal quests or hints about the order (for the last adventure)I loved Dark Sun. The Prism Pentad series which the campaign was based off of was great until the end. The problem is when you kill off your major villains, it kind of kills the campaign.

Since I'm dming Dark Sun: An update on races: and I won't accept things like "use goliaths for half giants". That's non sense. I don't want them to force any race. DS is about a dying world with extinted races, not new ones like tieflings on 4e. Rules for weapons: inferior materials Rules for armors: 4e edition just says that you change the name and suddenly you can use a "plate" armor in the middle of the desert... Psionics that aren't just wizards with mana (psi). Classes to emulate the original set and again don't force new classes like the sorcerer. I want a gladiator, and athasian bard to replace the one in the phb, templars, elemental clerics and defilers and preservers. Expand rules for environmental hazards. A new monster manual. I can't just use monster on the first monster manual. I need monster specially designed for dark sun. And many others not so important like prices in different cities, dehydration an so on. I'm totally ok with new alien stuffs,I can ban them, but I don't...

Since I'm dming Dark Sun: defilers and preservers. A) Thank you for chiming in. It helps to hear from somebody who is 'doing DS in real life' (as opposed to me who 'might do DS again someday'). B) IIRC, defiling magic is the normal state of affairs. Preserving magic is an act of will. So you might need a feat or a class feature added to indicate that you don't kill everything around you. One thing I can see is rules for defiling extra when you up-cast a spell. The 4e Dark Sun Campaign Sourcebook mentioned that Hamanu destroyed a rival city with one spell (and slew his own army to empower it), which sounded a lot like Meteor Swarm with metamagic applied and a few hundred Sorcery Points to work with. There should also be a class feature on Sorcerer where, at high levels, you can create a 'positive feedback loop' between your defiling and the Sorcerer Points you are gaining - to expand the defile radius (and cover more victims) - before the main spell has to be cast. Of course, if yo...

  • 07:46 PM - neogod22 quoted Ezequielramone in post [Dark Sun] - Hamanu's Defiler School
I provided a link, you have to click where it says "Khan's Urik". At the end of the article the Destiny's Kingdom is described and it says that there is a defiler school. I know that athas.org is not official, but it is most likely based on some official content. Also the Sorcerer-Kings use defilers to control preservers and perform some tasks. If I can recall correctly Myrmeleons are defilers that the SK use to infiltrate in the veiled alliance.Yeah you're right about using them against the veiled alliance. How many of the supplements do you have. The problem with a lot of campaign settings is that while they give you an overview on things, very few times they get into detail about where things are and how they are run unless it's in an adventure. I guess your best bet would be to check out Dragon Magazine and see if you can find anything on Urik. Maybe a map,of the city.
  • 07:00 PM - neogod22 quoted Ezequielramone in post [Dark Sun] - Hamanu's Defiler School
Hi all. I’ve been playing Dark Sun for a year now and slowly learning all I can about this awesome setting. I’m running the “original” adventures for my group and right now they are finally reaching Urik at the beggining of Arcane Shadows. One of my awesome players designed a custom earth druid for a past campaing and we saw that it totally fits Dark Sun. So we read the last Athas.org article: “Khan’s Urik”. And at the end it says that Hamanu has a “defiler school”. I knew he has a psionic school but I can’t find anything about the defiler’s school. It could be really interesting for the druid to do something with that academy. I could totally made it up, but i prefer to look for official (or not) info about that acadamy. Please someone could point me out where it is the info about that? Thanks you in advance. Where did you hear he had a defiler school? That seems uncharacteristic of the warrior king. Not only because he is named the warrior king, but because in general the sorcerer kings in gen...

I decided to run SKT just when we were finishing HotDQ. And it was a lot for the players. They got bored. I ran super quickly SKT, like 6-8 sessions. Still it was a lot. I ran ToD when it first came out adding only The Frozen Castle from Kobold press and that time was awesome. The second was fun and all but if I wanted to do that again maybe I will change some PCs. Like a super side quest for one or two of the originals PCs with new companions. Also you should put little hints about giant Revolution during SKT.I don't think rhod is compatible with ToD. Thanks for your input Ezequielramone. It sounds like you had an issue with SKT in general? What was it that caused your players to be bored? Also, why don't you think RHoD is compatible? Is it just that Giants are helping the Horde or is it something else? Thanks for replying!

  • 03:36 PM - delericho quoted Ezequielramone in post Dark Sun psionic tattoos?
Was there something like psionic tattoos in 2e Dark Sun? I don't think so. I think psionic tattoos came in with 3e - in 2nd Ed all psionic items were intelligent (so no equivalent of potions, scrolls, etc). Is that something reasonable? Yes, though the best handling of that concept was a tattooed wizard I saw in a recent Pathfinder game - basically, when preparing spells the character tattooed them on her flesh, and then cast them normally. I'd generally advise against letting the PC treat tattoos as potions, for the reason the Cap'n gave - it makes it too easy to stockpile them and thus bypass any limits on uses per day.

  • 09:09 AM - Psikerlord# quoted Ezequielramone in post Low Fantasy Gaming RPG
Hello, finally I'm alpha testing my setting. I used Pathfinder for the first games and it doesn't fit the flavor. Next session we are moving to LFG. I see I could use aD&D monsters... so I have millions of monsters to play with. The thing is those don't have stats, how do you eyeball stats and luck for monsters? Should I avoid puting stats till I need them? Like I'm runing an encounter with a monster straight from the aD&D MM and when a player do something that make me roll a save I assign the stat in that moment? Hey Ezequielramone - sorry just saw this! Luck is according to HD, so just compare to a similar HD monster in LFG and use that (I've put the HD to Luck table in the GM part of the setting book coming out soon, but the above works just as well). You can probably use the AD&D stats without too much change, as 18 was human max then, which is same as LFG. For monster saves, the easiest is to just given them a Luck save, or otherwise yes make an opposed check with an appropriate stat. Happy to discuss further, hope this helps!

  • 04:42 PM - Klaudius Rex quoted Ezequielramone in post Expedition to the Demonweb Pits as a sequel to Out of the Abyss?
I'm runing OotA, last session characters had the last random encounter before reaching surface (they still don't believe they are really gone see the sun). Since the Baenre wizard is the RAW root of the caos, it makes sense to be Lloth the real root in your home game. I really believe this campaign should go till players are bored with their characters. When they reach surface for the first time they can change one or two PCs just to keep things fresh. Killing Orcus should be another turning point for your campaign IMHO. My advice is to offer that and ask your player if they want to keep playing those character in another dark and hostile enviroment. Maybe your players are really in love with the campaign and their characters going through those places, but maybe not. So, GO AHEAD if your players want. I'm also running Tyranny of Dragons and between book 1 and 2 we connected Storm King's Thunder, but I asked my players first. The group which is playing OotA went through ToD first, they loved their...

We're out of the maze now. They figured out the last two sundials pretty quickly, and they went into the tower, got the key quickly, and are now exploring the dungeon.

  • 05:32 AM - Rils quoted Ezequielramone in post Other gods in the Demiplane of Dread?
I think that is not explained on purpose. Actually, spoiler alert, but it IS explained in the book. The Morninglord and Mother Night are the deities worshipped by the Barovians, but neither one of them is responsive. And while divine classes still gain their spells from their deities, a more direct connection to those deities is blocked by the Mists. The book even says that spells like augery or direct pleas to a deity are actually answered by Strahd. Sometimes he pretends to be the deity but gives out-of-character responses for them (e.g. a healing god telling their cleric to end another's life "out of mercy" instead of healing them), other times he responds as himself (basically "I'm Strahd and I'm the only Power here, sucker").

? I don't have problem in saying he just can use a metal armor, but I want to check all the options first. I think they can't use metal armours because metal is extracted from rocks and hippie things like that. I can change that. In that case you might need iron from another source. For example iron that is grown biologicly, for example a Gorgon has iron skin and it is grown as the Gorgon is neither a condtruct or a elemental. another source of biological iron might be to distill in from blood.

I don't, explain yourself, please.Once upon a time, there was a lesser known bard from the far away Empire, Britain the Greater. The bard was known as a radical in a time when conformity was the norm, the great age of Thatcher and Reagan known as the Eighties. One day, his songs traveled far to the land of America, and he became known far and wide for the little ditty "Goody Two-Shoes." The Bard's name was Adam Ant.
  • 08:18 PM - Hawk Diesel quoted Ezequielramone in post Is adamantine a metal?
Hi all, I'm running OotA and one of my players wants to multiclass his fighter to druid. So I'm checking the options we have to have a non-metal heavy armor since he have the feat. As far as I know adamantine is not a thing in the real world and can't find WTF it is. I just want to know if it is a metal and is forbidden for druids. Is there any other option for him to have a heavy armor? I don't have problem in saying he just can use a metal armor, but I want to check all the options first. I think they can't use metal armours because metal is extracted from rocks and hippie things like that. I can change that. In Eberron there was a material known as densewood. It came from special trees native to Aerenal, the continent of elves and the Undying Court. The wood is said to be as strong as steel. In addition to the other suggestions made (dragonscale, chitin (ankheg, giant spider), and bullette plate), you could also go with live wood armor. It probably wouldn't offer the same protection as most hea...

As far as I know adamantine is not a thing in the real world and can't find WTF it is. 'adamant' is taken from classical Greek, from which it is usually translated either 'diamond' or 'steel.' In English, adamant means resolute or stubborn and does not usually refer to a material and damantine can refer to a material, meaning unbreakable. Adamantite appends a suffix suggesting a mineral, and adamantium a suffix suggesting an element or metal, and have been used in science-fiction starting in the mid-20th century. FWIW. I think they can't use metal armours because metal is extracted from rocks and hippie things like that. I can change that. There's really little rhyme or re...
