Sobec nods, his reptilian head making the motion seem artificial almost. ”I want to know how many bandits there are, and if there is more than one vesk I need to face,” he says with the absolute certainty that only he can face others of his race. ”Far side, Skitter?” he asks his friend.

As the party continues to fight, things seem to slow down, almost to a crawl, creating an almost dream-like state. Nothing about what is happening seems real... and then, suddenly, everyone realizes that it isn't. The deaths of the other party members are equally spectacular, compared to the ones who have already fallen. The twins are torn apart while trying to protect Duncan; Tam and Damaara...

No heir. There are probably some ancillary members of the Imperial family, but the emperor has to be Paladine (God), and when the emperor was killed, so was Paladine. The Queen (his assassin) tried to set herself and the Helveki line on the throne, and that triggered the civil war that broke up the empire. Arideen (what is left of the empire in the mountains) is now ruled by a regency council...

For the Old Ones, think like Celts. Their tribes were pushed to the western fringes of the Empire when the Arideens moved into Essuss and Helveki. Many tribes integrated into imperial society. If your father was a legionnaire, he might be one of them. Others maintained the old ways and exist now mostly in western Essuss and the Ingha Swamp. Many on the island of Gilead are "civilized" Old Ones...

So the Healer Feat is worth a lvl 1 Cure Wounds at lvl 2? And isn't worth a 5th lvl Cure Wounds until lvl 20? I suppose your point is that the Healer Feat can do it once to every party member, though a Healer Kit only has so many uses. I guess it isn't that expensive, but still. A Party of Five can only use it for two days before it's used up. Cure Wounds can be cast as long as there are...

So, funny thing about charm spells. They only work if you’re not being attacked. And while two are charmed by Mim, they aren’t charmed by Ashara. Which means a feathery guy randomly shows up claiming, quite persuasively, that he’s a friend and wants to help, but before they can respond a crazy cat thing runs in and starts attacking people with fire and ice. Does Ashera have a death wish?

See, that’s how I differentiate Clerics from Warlocks. For me, Warlocks LEARN their magic. If the Patron decides to leave the Warlock for some reason, the Warlock keeps what they’ve earned. They just have to serve the Patron to get better. But for me, Clerics have no real power at all. It’s not actually them doing it. It’s the god channeling their power through the Cleric. The Cleric gets to...

The point is it CAN hit 6 targets, and as my post said, even if it's only hitting 3, it's doing more damage than the Ballista can. And because it's a save, and not an attack roll, even for those who save, they still take half damage, so some damage is done every turn. I don't understand why people are arguing with me because I'm pointing out that the Turret can hit 6 targets. Nobody says...

You also don’t count on hitting your opponent every round, we’re looking at max potential. If you only have 1 enemy, then the flamethrower isn’t the best use of your turret. But if you have 2, the damage equals the ballista, just spread out, and if there are more than 2, then you are doing more damage than the ballista can, up to 6 enemies per ballista.

So I would find that pesuasive that since no duration is specified for bear totem it must be all day...But just comparing the Bear totem to the unicorn...the unicorn also allows an increase in hp and it does last all day (since it is healing). So I guess this is my biggest question...do the temp hp expire with the totem or not? Nine temp hp for the whole 4th level party (and familiars!) is a pretty big deal. Having it last for 1 minute vs all day is pretty important. So I don't want to set a precedent where the druid is just dropping that totem after every short rest essentially increasing the entire party's hp by 25 or 30% all the...

I don't know, being able to inflict 1d8 damage to everything in a 15 ft cone, which is up to 6 creatures, is pretty devastating. Add two of them in the right spot and you're doing 4d8+Int Mod (cantrip) to one creature, and 2d8 or half to up to six creatures. So it's a choice between concentrated fire on one creature (doing an extra 4d8 with two balistas) or spread damage to lots of creatures...

I disagree, especially when considering ability scores. The Battle Smith is very obviously SAD, as everything is keyed off INT, both spells and combat damage. That gives it a very, very good incentive to take the Repeating Shot and use a Heavy Crossbow or a pair of Hand Crossbows, so you can fight as well as anyone and only use one ability. Pump Con next because of saving proficiency, and then...

"There is Destiny at work here, moving the pieces. We'd best move where it wants us to move, and we'd best do so together!" Then, just above his breath, he adds, "That's what Bob told me." Edit: Pelegon will sit and...

Drake approaches the group. He looks at the Dragonborn, and is slightly self conscious being around another dragon kin, but tries to hide it as best he can. “I understand you all have been dealing with the threat. I would like to help. I have some magic to me, and know my way around a fight.” With a glance at the Dragonborn’s color, very aware of the red scales on his back and shoulders,...

The group manages to approach the fort unseen. The werewolf Ichtaca is following almost found them once, but thanks to the Familiar’s directions, they avoided detection. Now, closer to the fort, everyone can see how old it is. It is a central building, three stories tall, and a wall around the perimeter. There are skeletons lining the wall, six of which can be seen, looking outward,...

Caerth listens and watches everyone intently. He is sceptical of everything Ghal and Balorix say, but he listens nonetheless. Trouble between a wererat and his former nestmates seems a small thing, even if they bring along their lycanthropic afflection. Hornauer seemingly ready to depart of his own intent, good, that would mean not breaking a promise. Cultists of some demonic crow deity... ...

But we won’t know what unless we seek out that lord.” Then seemingly realizing he was being too serious for appearing so drunk, Pelegon hiccups then smiles broadly, showing remarkably white teeth for only an instant. ”I need a drink, not a...

You need to find out what the wererat named Hornauer knows about the wererats that killed Sir Ghal's father, as well as any information he has on the cultists he mentioned to you the first time you visited the rocky isle. Soooo....she threw the drift globe over near them and spoke the command word for light and now the rest of the party (one elf and two other humans) could see them. Ray of Frost or Magic Missile could not (Rules as intended or rules as fun...well...at my table if a wizard wants to target an object with a...

Yeah, if you’re dumping strength, I don’t care how acrobatic you are, you aren’t climbing anything difficult. At all. It is all strength there. Acrobatics is being able to flip around and have quick reflexes. Climbing has nothing to do with that. If your elf player dumped strength and is complaining because they can’t do a pull up, I’m sorry, but that’s life. Make his character lift some...

...from the heroes' current position. The creatures profited from the Teraphim lack of sight in the situation, ambushing them. A single survivor managed to escape, having only a faint glimpse of a blind mongrel. Other encounters were pretty much the same. Bodies weren't found. Equipment was lost. Little more's available, even within the captain's subconscious mind, though. Harfik grasps from the memories that the Blind tend to fight indirectly. If they manage to loot the bodies of the dead or capture anyone, they certainly knew of the Teraphim before this encounter. Odds are they did know... and ambushed the Teraphim entirely aware of their actions, during these years. "The undead could present an obstacle to us," Icosa muses. "Is there a way to eliminate them completely?" "As long as the rituals can be performed, they'll keep coming back. The only way to stop them is either by destroying their very souls or the means to their profane rituals." - says the shaman. @Greenmtn @Shayuri @JustinCase @Neurotic

For good..." - something jumps in the back of Harfik's mind, reaching out for Aanzu as well. Somehow, they sense that the same happenstance reached the Captain, back in the base camp. She lies. The Blind met the Teraphim. They might not recognize them, but the Teraphim Watch has confronted them during these years. And they were not friendly. "We tried to leave, several times. But the dead always attempt to keep us here. In the past, we sought an alliance with the Valley Dragons. Only one paid us heed. But the dead overwhelmed her, and they've cut our path to the Valley. Whispers speak that she's with the dead, now." "We have only two ways out, now: through the undead city or by means of a Teraphim artifact. JustinCase I've seen nothing to suggest they don't hatch in Collville's world (Valoria? I think that is the continent), so the egg idea is fine. I'm not sure how true this is to Vasloria but I see the destruction of the dragon flights as something that took 15 to 20 years - it's hard to kill that many people - and even then, many dragonborn were left, just the units were broken. Now the dragonborn are hunted by the Hawklords to prevent any kind of regroup. I know Collville uses a unit of Dragonborn in his own story telling so there is at least one dragon flight left. You can certainly write in your own enemy NPC as plot device for me. If it is a Hawklord he probably won't feature in this part of the adventure, but it gives me a good link to the part 2 I'd like to run after, when you guys have a stronghold.

It's small at first: the waters produce the faintest waves, chocking against stone. Silently, a body rises from the fetid lake, covered in murky waters at fist, but relinquishing the wetness as it walks out. The creature is around five feet tall. Her features aren't strange - she resembles an old orc woman. Covered in reptile skins and chitinous adornments, she glances around, her eyes as worthless as the others'. Still, she appears to be seeing. The creature's face is long and old, with a huge nose, crowned by a black wart. She leans on a finely-made staff, hiding her ugly visage under the peculiar hood. "So.... Visitors we have..... *grunt*... Aand... How did they come here?" - she asks pragmatically. They're the failed mutations that were discarded in the Teraphim's incessant search for racial superiority... "Are you friend or prey?" The creature laughs languidly. "Right now I'm your best friend, sand dragon! Soon the dead will return. You shouldn't stay here. If you follow me, I'll lead you somewhere safe. But we cannot stay here. You killed their sentries. Their souls will return to the dead city, warn the others of how many are here, and they'll send the heavy troopers after you." - his gestures invite the heroes back to the room he just left. Aanzu's able to discern the exchanges as a whispered speech. Here and there, words are quickly exchanged. The creatures aske each other about what has been going on in the cave the heroes now occupy! No doubt they caught wind of the conflict, considering all the noise. After short deliberation, one of them moves forward, attempting to keep a silent pace with remarkable skill! the mongrel moves on all-fours, like a crouching thief in the night, but Aanzu can follow his movement with his gaze. A second one follows, just as silent, and then a third one, keeping distance between each other, but whispering constantly. [Ok, JustinCase and Neurotic, the answer to both your questions is yes: both eagle totem feature and darkvision can give more info, as long as you shift position a little - something easily accomplished now. I need Thulwar and Aanzu to give me a regular perception test each, though.] EVERYONE The room's taken by the sounds of the heavy exoskeleton moving towards the group. A little later, the machine stops, and Ajax jumps down, closely followed by Lyllie. "How do your people look back on the crimes of your ancestors?" Harfik seems to collected his words carefully chosen. "Pragmatically." - Ajax answers bluntly. "We couldn't undo our own mistakes. So we fought the guilty. Some insisted in using people as lab rats..." - he leans before the small passage while he talks - "...while others took responsibility and decided to take care of the survivors. The undead, though... Nothing can be done about them, now. Nothing that I know of, at least..." - he seems to lament their situation for a s...

That's everybody except KahlessNestor. And we have a player who is possibly considering applying to join the group, JustinCase. Any current player(s) have any input in this regard? The established players in the game will take precedence over any new folks, but I thought that some new blood might be a good thing? If the players don't think so, we can leave the group the way it is.

.... Even after the body breaks, the soul lingers! It might even find a new host, either through possession or through necromantic rituals - should they know them, of course... Lyllie and Ajax approach the group, glancing at the unfortunate body, eaten away by the bugs. The small creatures have taken a symbiotic bond with the undead - a painful, yet useful, relationship. The small scarabs are said to have been brought up from the lower layers of Mount Amberilan. No one knows how they were tamed, though... The room's still thrown in darkness. Only the small passage, which the undead planned to use, is visible from here. Nonetheless, dark vision reveals another passage, fifteen feet to the right. This second way out seems to be a gallery that leads to another room. Beyond, only silence. [Ok, you have the small passage and a gallery to another room. Remember that most of this room is thrown in darkness. More might be revealed, if you are inclined to explore.] Neurotic Shayuri JustinCase Greenmtn

EVERYONE [First things first: @Shayuri, @JustinCase and @Greenmtn, could you give me a perception roll each, please? Icosa has advantage on this one, since he's almost exclusively standing watch] "We are NOT The Teraphim, creature! You attacked us, now you reap what you saw. But if you have something to offer us, talk. We are not merciless killers." The creature motions as if spitting, emiting a low, disdainful whisper instead. "You serve a Teraphim. And that's enough for me." - he motions towards the darkness the heroes left behind, where the silent Ajax waits. At least the scout had the common sense to stay behind, lest he anger the prisoner even more. "We have nothing to offer a monster's servant. Kill me. Kill me now! Gods know it makes no difference." - he chuckles within Aanzu's grasp, and only after a few seconds everyone realizes he's laughing. The lack of flesh on his features makes reading his reactions a lot harder. "How many little bugs are still crawling around?" the dragonborn asks in a low tone, after Thulwar has ...

...rns his right shoulder away. The creature howls in pain as Aanzu approaches in flight. His skilled claw dances around and the creature missteps, practically falling into Aanzu's grasp! Lifted, it still struggles, but it seems too hurt and too weakened to obtain any solid results.... His light body is no nuisance to the dragon prince as well. It seems the creature will need a good amount of effort - and luck - to flee from ots captors. The undead snarls and protests, shaking its body in a desperate attempt to escape. The fires that animate the body rise through several cuts on the chest, as well as the chunk missing from his shoulder. The right arm is useless now, hanging from the open bruise, where a mass of burned bones twist against the living green display. "Aaah, you've bested me, Teraphim..." - an old, resigned voice comes from the increasingly still undead. "And what do I owe you for my precious life?" - his snark tone does not attempt to hide his cynicism. Neurotic Greenmtn JustinCase Shayuri [Yup, that was a new round! EVERYONE The heroes close in on the fugitive. The undead turns over his shoulder, grasping the aproximation of his foes just as he approaches the wall on the opposite side of the room. There, near the floor, a small opening has been carved. Clearly, he intends to jump in, fleeing from the hall! The heroes still have one last chance to stop him, but should they fail, the creature will most likely slide through the small path - and into the unknown darkness beyond! [Ok, you have one shot to stop him! You can tackle, freeze, attack or do whatever you deem best. Some of these rolls will be contested, as you can imagine. The ones capable of stopping him now are Thulwar, Aanzu and Harfik. Go ahead and give me your actions!] Neurotic Shayuri JustinCase Greenmtn

Also, @Shayuri, you can follow or shoot the fugitive with your action as well!] The undead assassin runs towards the darkness under another burst of shots from Ajax' suit. The shots land right in the assassin's back, burning both his armor and his flesh and throwing him of a bit. Still, he continues, almost vanishing into the room's blackness. A second salve comes from behind as Lylie shoots a ray of frost towards him! She misses, creating an icy spot on the floor as the undead evades her best efforts! His steps are light and surprisingly fast! Even Harfik, advancing in unnatural leaps, has difficulty following the fugitive! The creature remains ten feet ahead, but still under the monk's gaze! Tink's heavy steps shake the floor as the creature follows the monk, rising a pair of menacing claws in hopes of reaching and egulfing the fugitive! By their side, Aanzu moves forwar...

Gurnard's Head Secrets and revelations. You've come out to Gurnard's Head with an agenda. You need to find out what the wererat named Hornauer knows about the wererats that killed Sir Ghal's father, as well as any information he has on the cultists he mentioned to you the first time you visited the rocky isle. You also have task of outing him and his brood from the tower, as decreed by Lady Pendour, as task that goes against the promise you made to him. The wererat sensed your arrival and came out to frighten you off. He and his brood surrounded you all. That's when everything turned upside down. Two of the veteran guards that were brought, no, sent alongside Sir Ghal are actually retired knights of the Crimson Blades, an order of investigators dedicated to rooting out evil in the Strandlands. This wasn't was Ghal told you when asking for your help. The news incensed Caerth. Alright, so a brief overview of my Vesk Solarian (full sheet to follow): Sobec-Apep-Hotep (friends call him Sobec) used to be a mercenary based on Absalom Station, where as the only Vesk he worked together with many other races. Growing fond of his “softer” companions Sobec found himself fathering over them despite his stoic appearance to the outside world. Then one fateful day while on a mission near the Diaspora, when he met a Kasathan solarian named Altronus. Intrigued by the curious philosophy of stars and black holes, Sobec returned to the solarian after completing the mission to be mentored in the old Kasathan way. He was only just taking his first steps toward his destiny, when Altronus mysteriously vanished. Forced to self-educate, Sobec has improved considerably but is now at a stand-still. Perhaps what he needs now is a mission to the Tabori Cluster... Perhaps Sobec knows one of the other characters, so he can join them on this mysterious quest? Well Skitter is from Dias...

So is the loading of the cart near the interrogation of the lizardfolk? I want to know if I can join the interrogating. The interrogation is near the east gate. The original cart is by the west gate. I assume the new cart was wheeled over to the kitchen and is now on its way to west gate during the discussion before and during the interrogation. But it's not a big camp. You can just wander over to the interrogation. There are probably a few villagers paying attention to the interrogation. Remember, one of the villagers woke the lizardman up after he was tied to Swithun.

Heh, sounds fun. I’m also intrigued at the idea of Surina and my soon-to-be-finished aasimar drunken master and their interactions... They’ll know of each other, at least, with her family of vintners. [emoji2] Brother Pelegon (name not definitive) lives as a hermit near town for a few years, and is mostly known as a drunk. He moved here after his wife died, and that’s pretty much anyone knows. Indeed, that will be interesting. Surina’s been away training for a few years, but depending on how long Brother Pelegon has been a local hermit, she might indeed know him. While she’s obviously not a tea-totaler, she’s probably a bit prejudiced against alcoholics. (Both because she’s morally uptight and because it’s a waste of good wine to drink just to get drunk). If she knows he is Aasimar, she’s likely to be a bit conflicted about his current state. It will be good for her to wrestle with the fact that the world is a lot more complicated and morally ambiguous than she thinks it is.

Interesting that 4e seems to be (slightly) in the lead in the poll. It's not my cup of tea; I was certain that 3.x would far outpace the others. My own vote is 3.5 although I'm almost completely over to 5e these days. . Well, there is a PF forum. I suspect if you put this poll up there you might see the result you'd expect. BTW, I'm curious why you play 5e rather than 3.5 or PF?

I want to know if I can make Bertold do something now that my paladin is KO. :) The henchmen are yours to control, they act on your initiative. There are some basic rules here If you have any questions on them, I'll try and clear it up.

Yeah, I figured a whole squad of dragonborn would be too much. That's why I decided upon a human follower, but I didn't think about it any further. I could change it if you insist. No, once I got my head around the idea that they weren’t all Dragonborn, things sat a bit easier. One of the followers you can attract is an ambassador who allows you to attract followers of a different ancestry.

I've added a few prominent NPC's that some of you may know about as you're local to Bedegar. I'll try and keep this updated as we go along Arcata's background has been added. Let me know if I need to make any changes to fit the narrative in. Looks good, there is enough there that I can build on if I need to use Arcata's family. I imagine Sothor knew someone reliable in Bedegar, possibly hoping that the Baron would take him in. When that does not happen, because of not wanting to be associated with a fugitive, Sothor and his soldiers may have been working underground as a sort of resistance movement, using a secret hideout somewhere. (That may tie Saarthax to @Herosmith14's character, if he's up for it. Frostbite may have been/still is one of Sothor's men.) In that case they would have rushed to the Baron's defense when the orcs came. I'm not sure how many men were in that squad, but I don't think it would've been very many. Ten at the very most. BIO Saarthax hatched in the Barony of Bedegar, after his father Sothor fled the capital during the fall of King Ormund and took Saarthax' egg with him. Here the boy grew up and learned how to fight a losing battle against the forces of Ajax the Tyrant. Trained as a soldier by his father and his men, Saarthax looked up to Sothor as the experienced paladin inspired his men through kindness and example. Saarthax knew early on that he, too, wanted to swear his Oath and become a beacon of hope. Then the worst day of his life happened. Huge orc soldiers invaded the Barony and killed the Baron and his family. At least one Hawk Lord had joined the battle, a sadistic man called Jorn Whitefeather, and he managed to close in on Saarthax and one of the other soldiers, Bernold the battlepriest. Both were taking serious injuries as Jorn toyed with them, luring out Saarthax' father. Eventually, Sothor came to their rescue but was killed before their eyes by the superior fighter. Not yet, I wasn't expecting much this side of New Year's day. I'm surprised we got this much done already. I appreciate it, as it lets me start to line things up in my head. I guess no one here went away for the holiday? I hope not. I just can't find the time to deep dive with the PHB (to pick out spells). I'm thinking Arcane Knight. I just wish it was Charisma based instead of Int based. It's not like it uses the spell book paradigm for spells. I kind of see your point, but I also think the last thing that's needed is another CHA caster. Relying on a tertiary stat for a major part of you class shtick is very limiting. I think they get a lot better at level 10 with Eldritch Strike, but I've never played one that far. I've seen a lot of people suggest that Transmutation school would make more sense for EK than Evocation
