It's been a tough time for her over the last decade. She had to have one leg amputated and her other leg now has an infection on her heel that isn't getting better. "So you're saying these hunters, who might have had nothing to do with all that, just happen to be in our way and therefore it's alright to slaughter them? Yeah, that sounds like justice," the monk say with a firmer and more sober voice than he's made so far. Then he shrugs and looks away from the scaled performer to see how the others react. ...

I really want to say yes, but mostly you're right. Of course it depends on both players and DM, but apart from very minor things ("your dwarf manages to convince the dwarven counsel but only because he's a respectable dwarven citizen") it tends to be "I'm a dwarf so I do what a human would do, but with gruffness". The default assumption is that you must BOTH break the line of sight AND get the DM’s permission for it to work. JUST breaking the line of sight is not and never has been the default, as the default also requires that the DM decide that the circumstances allow for hiding. It would be perfectly, in the rules, for the DM to say that once you have been seen in combat, you can no longer hide, because...

You can Hide in Plain Sight with the Skulker Feat. You just need to be lightly obscured, as in dim light. Well, that's a very good logic. And I was about to counter that by saying I can still play my retainer, but then there are only two retainers in the game (so far?) so that doesn't fly. I'm good either way, I just like having clarity. Thanks!

"At least you know who your family is," says Pelegon before explaining that he was raised as an orphan in the monastery. The only family he ever had were the other monks and, much later, his late wife. "Didn't miss the drinks while I was in the monastery, because I didn't try them until rather recently. Beer seems a great way to drown sorrows, but I've learned sorrows learn to swim quickly." ...

Mayhap he asked too many favours already? Then the dragonborn paladin charges forward to aid his friend in defeating the plant monster. Learning from his mistakes,...

"Not sure," Sobec says as he drops his backpack and with one hand takes out a simple pair of binders. "Didn't see anyone, but I suspect only one. Ask the woman." Releasing his weapon, which reshapes into a mote of starlight and starts orbiting around the vesk once more, Sobec walks up to said woman and binds her wrists behind her back. Dropping out of photon attunement.

Out of boredom, the aasimar attempts small talk with Everett. A mass of lights and noise comes from there, as if all attentions are focused there. Another massive tower rests at Southeast, entirely dark, but crowded with spirits of blue, deadly hue. Towards West, an old Golden gate rots away, unused and half-opened. Howls still come from the distance, but for now it seems safe to move about. [Stealth everyone! Where do you go? And.... ...from the heroes' current position. The creatures profited from the Teraphim lack of sight in the situation, ambushing them. A single survivor managed to escape, having only a faint glimpse of a blind mongrel. Other encounters were pretty much the same. Bodies weren't found. Equipment was lost. Little more's available, even within the captain's subconscious mind, though. Harfik grasps from the memories that the Blind tend to fight indirectly. If they manage to loot the bodies of the dead or capture anyone, they certainly knew of the Teraphim before this encounter. Odds are they did know... and ambushed the Teraphim entirely aware of their actions, during these years. "The undead could present an obstacle to us," Icosa muses. "Is there a way to eliminate them completely?" "As long as the rituals can be performed, they'll keep coming back. The only way to stop them is either by destroying their very souls or the means to their profane rituals." - says the shaman. @Greenmtn @Shayuri @JustinCase @Neurotic

For good..." - something jumps in the back of Harfik's mind, reaching out for Aanzu as well. Somehow, they sense that the same happenstance reached the Captain, back in the base camp. She lies. The Blind met the Teraphim. They might not recognize them, but the Teraphim Watch has confronted them during these years. And they were not friendly. "We tried to leave, several times. But the dead always attempt to keep us here. In the past, we sought an alliance with the Valley Dragons. Only one paid us heed. But the dead overwhelmed her, and they've cut our path to the Valley. Whispers speak that she's with the dead, now." "We have only two ways out, now: through the undead city or by means of a Teraphim artifact. That is, if the Teraphim can help us bring it back to life..." - she studies the party. Neurotic JustinCase Greenmtn Shayuri

No doubt they want the Teraphim. We are natural allies, it seems...." - she waves around. "And we might be able to work out a plan. If there are orcs beyond, there are other places we can go to... JustinCase I've seen nothing to suggest they don't hatch in Collville's world (Valoria? I think that is the continent), so the egg idea is fine. I'm not sure how true this is to Vasloria but I see the destruction of the dragon flights as something that took 15 to 20 years - it's hard to kill that many people - and even then, many dragonborn were left, just the units were broken. Now the dragonborn are hunted by the Hawklords to prevent any kind of regroup. I know Collville uses a unit of Dragonborn in his own story telling so there is at least one dragon flight left. You can certainly write in your own enemy NPC as plot device for me. If it is a Hawklord he probably won't feature in this part of the adventure, but it gives me a good link to the part 2 I'd like to run after, when you guys have a stronghold.

"Outside, you say?" - the information seems to pique her interest. "Ah, but you must tell me your stories, then! ...amma Kith, it's Gargan! And I bring visitors!" For a few moments, only silence covers the area, bur the mongrels ears and noses are agitated, as if something stirred within darkness. It's small at first: the waters produce the faintest waves, chocking against stone. Silently, a body rises from the fetid lake, covered in murky waters at fist, but relinquishing the wetness as it walks out. The creature is around five feet tall. Her features aren't strange - she resembles an old orc woman. Covered in reptile skins and chitinous adornments, she glances around, her eyes as worthless as the others'. Still, she appears to be seeing. The creature's face is long and old, with a huge nose, crowned by a black wart. She leans on a finely-made staff, hiding her ugly visage under the peculiar hood. "So.... Visitors we have..... *grunt*... Aand... How did they come here?" - she asks pragmatically. ...arfik's mind, though, for they're another stain in the Teraphim's past: these ones were members of the many races lodged around Mount Amberilan - orcs, goblins, dwarves - once regular creatures, but lost to Teraphim experimentation. They're the failed mutations that were discarded in the Teraphim's incessant search for racial superiority... "Are you friend or prey?" The creature laughs languidly. "Right now I'm your best friend, sand dragon! Soon the dead will return. You shouldn't stay here. If you follow me, I'll lead you somewhere safe. But we cannot stay here. You killed their sentries. Their souls will return to the dead city, warn the others of how many are here, and they'll send the heavy troopers after you." - his gestures invite the heroes back to the room he just left. "You might be stronger than the dead... But their numbers alone can compensate that..." - he smiles a wicked smile, as if dreadful memories of battle pervaded his mind. Aanzu's able to discern the exchanges as a whispered speech. Here and there, words are quickly exchanged. The creatures aske each other about what has been going on in the cave the heroes now occupy! No doubt they caught wind of the conflict, considering all the noise. After short deliberation, one of them moves forward, attempting to keep a silent pace with remarkable skill! the mongrel moves on all-fours, like a crouching thief in the night, but Aanzu can follow his movement with his gaze. A second one follows, just as silent, and then a third one, keeping distance between each other, but whispering constantly. Their eyes are empty, inert and useless, but the large ears are enough to allow sound to reach them from a good distance. Soon enough they'll be within range, noticing the heroes! A little later, the machine stops, and Ajax jumps down, closely followed by Lyllie. "How do your people look back on the crimes of your ancestors?" Harfik seems to collected his words carefully chosen. "Pragmatically." - Ajax answers bluntly. "We couldn't undo our own mistakes. So we fought the guilty. Some insisted in using people as lab rats..." - he leans before the small passage while he talks - "...while others took responsibility and decided to take care of the survivors. The undead, though... Nothing can be done about them, now. Nothing that I know of, at least..." - he seems to lament their situation for a s...

That's everybody except KahlessNestor. And we have a player who is possibly considering applying to join the group, JustinCase. Any current player(s) have any input in this regard? The established players in the game will take precedence over any new folks, but I thought that some new blood might be a good thing? If the players don't think so, we can leave the group the way it is.

.... Even after the body breaks, the soul lingers! It might even find a new host, either through possession or through necromantic rituals - should they know them, of course... Lyllie and Ajax approach the group, glancing at the unfortunate body, eaten away by the bugs. The small creatures have taken a symbiotic bond with the undead - a painful, yet useful, relationship. The small scarabs are said to have been brought up from the lower layers of Mount Amberilan. No one knows how they were tamed, though... The room's still thrown in darkness. Only the small passage, which the undead planned to use, is visible from here. Nonetheless, dark vision reveals another passage, fifteen feet to the right. This second way out seems to be a gallery that leads to another room. Beyond, only silence. [Ok, you have the small passage and a gallery to another room. Remember that most of this room is thrown in darkness. More might be revealed, if you are inclined to explore.] Neurotic Shayuri JustinCase Greenmtn

EVERYONE [First things first: @Shayuri, @JustinCase and @Greenmtn, could you give me a perception roll each, please? Icosa has advantage on this one, since he's almost exclusively standing watch] "We are NOT The Teraphim, creature! You attacked us, now you reap what you saw. But if you have something to offer us, talk. We are not merciless killers." The creature motions as if spitting, emiting a low, disdainful whisper instead. "You serve a Teraphim. And that's enough for me." - he motions towards the darkness the heroes left behind, where the silent Ajax waits. At least the scout had the common sense to stay behind, lest he anger the prisoner even more. "We have nothing to offer a monster's servant. Kill me. Kill me now! Gods know it makes no difference." - he chuckles within Aanzu's grasp, and only after a few seconds everyone realizes he's laughing. The lack of flesh on his features makes reading his reactions a lot harder. "How many little bugs are still crawling around?" the dragonborn asks in a low tone, after Thulwar has ...

...rns his right shoulder away. The creature howls in pain as Aanzu approaches in flight. His skilled claw dances around and the creature missteps, practically falling into Aanzu's grasp! Lifted, it still struggles, but it seems too hurt and too weakened to obtain any solid results.... His light body is no nuisance to the dragon prince as well. It seems the creature will need a good amount of effort - and luck - to flee from ots captors. The undead snarls and protests, shaking its body in a desperate attempt to escape. The fires that animate the body rise through several cuts on the chest, as well as the chunk missing from his shoulder. The right arm is useless now, hanging from the open bruise, where a mass of burned bones twist against the living green display. "Aaah, you've bested me, Teraphim..." - an old, resigned voice comes from the increasingly still undead. "And what do I owe you for my precious life?" - his snark tone does not attempt to hide his cynicism. Neurotic Greenmtn JustinCase Shayuri [Yup, that was a new round! EVERYONE The heroes close in on the fugitive. The undead turns over his shoulder, grasping the aproximation of his foes just as he approaches the wall on the opposite side of the room. There, near the floor, a small opening has been carved. Clearly, he intends to jump in, fleeing from the hall! The heroes still have one last chance to stop him, but should they fail, the creature will most likely slide through the small path - and into the unknown darkness beyond! [Ok, you have one shot to stop him! You can tackle, freeze, attack or do whatever you deem best. Some of these rolls will be contested, as you can imagine. The ones capable of stopping him now are Thulwar, Aanzu and Harfik. Go ahead and give me your actions!] Neurotic Shayuri JustinCase Greenmtn

I question the assumption about native English speakers being the sole audience. English is not my first language, and it isn't for any of the people I play with IRL, but we still use the English copies of the PHB etc. Firstly because there are no Dutch translations, and secondly because even if there were, hardly anyone would buy them because we're all familiar *enough* with English. I also question the figure of 40 million people that the original post says. Without knowing how they came up with this number, one cannot say if it is accurate, guesswork, or hyperbole. Well, it seems they clarified it (responding without having read the rest of the thread yet). The number is a hype number (no other hard numbers to back it up, such as PHB's sold total...etc.). If I said that 1 Billion people play Monopoly...that seems really impressive? Right. Of course, I could have gotten that number from anywhere, or extrapolated it from anywhere. NOW...if I had sold 300K copies of Monopoly in...

That’s a fair assumption, I think. I’m just curious about their model. I can get behind that logic. It just feels like such a huge number, even with the current popularity of D&D, that I am immediately sceptical. Regardless, I’m very pleased that so many people are playing! Oh, for sure, knowing what they are working with would be fun: doubt they will open that up for the public in detail, though. Remember, those numbers are for worldwide: ~40 million out of 7-8 billion is fairly niche. The books are available in several major languages now, with more on the way, outside of the Anglosphere.

I also question the figure of 40 million people that the original post says. Without knowing how they came up with this number, one cannot say if it is accurate, guesswork, or hyperbole. Stewart says that is their estimate: they have accurate sales data, and likely have a statistical model based on observation as to how many people are playing per unit sold, on average. At the number of sales they appear to be dealing with, this is probably quite accurate within an unknown to us margin of error: there may be less than 40 million, there be more, but either way it is probably not far off. Phar keeps his own council as the issues discussed are not directly his. He does nod in approval however and once the maps are available he rejoins the conversation. "This is most helpful, but Hornauer is no sage of threats." "Death?" "Bad?" "Big Bug?" He frowns in disgust as the lack of scholarship offends his sensibilities. "And Book? That could be very interesting, but how many? What kind. Nothing for it to go and see for ourselves. At least we are forewarned." yes, we sure know about that bug. what troubles me is the room next to the rooks labeled eggs. I don't think those are chicken eggs. "Hornauer did say that his ratwere lady created them," Aureus notes over Phar's shoulder. "She may have a very literal mind. And yes, I think eggs are rook hatchlings." Caerth frowns, then moves over. A bit more rude than he intends, the half-orc demands to see the map. "Must be rook eggs. Underground nests? Those are certainly not natural," he mutters before handing the map back to Quinn. The ...

Very annoying I'm sure. He must be way more fashionable than my dad...or me for that matter. It turned out that dad had left his laundry in the washer; he'd thought he'd put it in the dryer but hadn't actually done it. :p His memory is iffy, sometimes. :( Anyway, I had dinner out with him, my aunts, and my sister tonight. They're all doing stuff tomorrow, but I need a day to myself. So, I'm going to finally start working on my next reply. Hopefully I will get it done and up, as the next few days afterwards are busy. It will get up sometime this week. {Knock on wood.}

Thanks, I figured my turn would be before Eowyn so I'd have to wait for next round, but if not, then here I go! :) I had to think about this a little the last time it came up. Since you're all effectively acting on the same initiative any time a PC goes down, the player would miss a turn. Around a table this might make an effective counter to "whack-a-PC" but the probability of being locked out for several turns seems a little harsh for a PbP game where several turns could mean a month of real time going by without the player taking an action. With normal initiative the party would have a tactical choice of using an action to heal a PC before his turn and allowing him an action or doing something more efficient and losing the downed PC's action. That tactical choice doesn't exist the way I'm doing initiative in this game. While I try to keep an open mind to different definitions of fun, I can't believe that doing nothing in a game you're supposed to be playing in is fun for anyone.

Saarthax comes to, and looks into the eyes of the halfling woman who healed him. Again. "Thanks," he whispers, thinking he should thank her properly later. The dragonborn grabs his head, still painful, as he tries to remember what happened. The plant thing missed him, didn't it? Or was that just the first attack? Must've been. Then suddenly he jerks his head, and yes, the creature is still there and still attacking! Poor Bertold is now facing it without him! Thanks for another heal! This had better not become a habit... ;) I'm assuming Saarthax cannot act on this round anymore, but Bertold can: [roll0] for [roll1] damage You can act. You have a full turn. Just need half your movement to stand.

"Caerth, perhaps we should keep our present promise to Hornauer, get supplies for an extended trip below and return in stealth." Caerth is pleased that Balorix asks him for permission directly, even though he realizes this is not about him. Still, the proud half-orc shows himself to be satisfied with this outcome. "I have promised Hornauer we will not harm him or his brood, and them leaving makes sure we can keep that promise without breaking the one to the Lady. So that is what we do first," he says, trying to sound like a leader instead of just a guy from the woods. Aureus nods her head in agreement and even Elijah relaxes, a little. Sir Balorix seems content with Caerth's decision while Sir Ghal shifts his feet, uncomfortably. Balorix notes the knight's uncertainty and puts his hand on his shoulder. The young knight sighs and nods his head. Keeping his eyes on Balorix, the druid hesitates for a moment. By the sound of it, there are a lot of cultists down there, and they worship a ca...

Caerth listens and watches everyone intently. He is sceptical of everything Ghal and Balorix say, but he listens nonetheless. Trouble between a wererat and his former nestmates seems a small thing, even if they bring along their lycanthropic afflection. Hornauer seemingly ready to depart of his own intent, good, that would mean not breaking a promise. Cultists of some demonic crow deity... ”Wait,” says the half-orc suddenly, ”They worship a crow and yet they stay below the earth? What madness is that?” "No idea," Hornauer replies. "And I never felt like intorducing myself to them. The seem to accept my brood as a simple fact of life and I've kept my dire rats away from them. They aren't aware of me or my mate's presence here. I'm certain of that," he nods his head. "Well, I'm fairly certain they aren't aware of us." "So, you are not their ally," Aureus notes. "That's good." "There is no way that I'd align myself with crazy demon worshiping cannibals." "C-cannibals..." Elijah says...

Gurnard's Head Secrets and revelations. You've come out to Gurnard's Head with an agenda. You need to find out what the wererat named Hornauer knows about the wererats that killed Sir Ghal's father, as well as any information he has on the cultists he mentioned to you the first time you visited the rocky isle. You also have task of outing him and his brood from the tower, as decreed by Lady Pendour, as task that goes against the promise you made to him. The wererat sensed your arrival and came out to frighten you off. He and his brood surrounded you all. That's when everything turned upside down. Two of the veteran guards that were brought, no, sent alongside Sir Ghal are actually retired knights of the Crimson Blades, an order of investigators dedicated to rooting out evil in the Strandlands. This wasn't was Ghal told you when asking for your help. The news incensed Caerth. Sir Ghal sheepishly apologized for lying to you, as he was ordered to do so by Sir Balorix and Aeron, Caerth's ment...

Alright, so a brief overview of my Vesk Solarian (full sheet to follow): Sobec-Apep-Hotep (friends call him Sobec) used to be a mercenary based on Absalom Station, where as the only Vesk he worked together with many other races. Growing fond of his “softer” companions Sobec found himself fathering over them despite his stoic appearance to the outside world. Then one fateful day while on a mission near the Diaspora, when he met a Kasathan solarian named Altronus. Intrigued by the curious philosophy of stars and black holes, Sobec returned to the solarian after completing the mission to be mentored in the old Kasathan way. He was only just taking his first steps toward his destiny, when Altronus mysteriously vanished. Forced to self-educate, Sobec has improved considerably but is now at a stand-still. Perhaps what he needs now is a mission to the Tabori Cluster... Perhaps Sobec knows one of the other characters, so he can join them on this mysterious quest? Well Skitter is from Dias...

So is the loading of the cart near the interrogation of the lizardfolk? I want to know if I can join the interrogating. The interrogation is near the east gate. The original cart is by the west gate. I assume the new cart was wheeled over to the kitchen and is now on its way to west gate during the discussion before and during the interrogation. But it's not a big camp. You can just wander over to the interrogation. There are probably a few villagers paying attention to the interrogation. Remember, one of the villagers woke the lizardman up after he was tied to Swithun.

Heh, sounds fun. I’m also intrigued at the idea of Surina and my soon-to-be-finished aasimar drunken master and their interactions... They’ll know of each other, at least, with her family of vintners. [emoji2] Brother Pelegon (name not definitive) lives as a hermit near town for a few years, and is mostly known as a drunk. He moved here after his wife died, and that’s pretty much anyone knows. Indeed, that will be interesting. Surina’s been away training for a few years, but depending on how long Brother Pelegon has been a local hermit, she might indeed know him. While she’s obviously not a tea-totaler, she’s probably a bit prejudiced against alcoholics. (Both because she’s morally uptight and because it’s a waste of good wine to drink just to get drunk). If she knows he is Aasimar, she’s likely to be a bit conflicted about his current state. It will be good for her to wrestle with the fact that the world is a lot more complicated and morally ambiguous than she thinks it is.

My own vote is 3.5 although I'm almost completely over to 5e these days. . Well, there is a PF forum. I suspect if you put this poll up there you might see the result you'd expect. BTW, I'm curious why you play 5e rather than 3.5 or PF?
