Merin begins to ponder the possibility of building a lock on the river... such a fortification might prove useful. The lock that he had in mind was a simple, wooden gate that would span the river, two doors that could be pulled together and closed by workmen with ropes. Each door would be mounted to a stone wall, on either side of the river. Behind the gates, on either river bank, would be two...

The default assumption is that you must BOTH break the line of sight AND get the DM’s permission for it to work. JUST breaking the line of sight is not and never has been the default, as the default also requires that the DM decide that the circumstances allow for hiding. It turned out that dad had left his laundry in the washer; he'd thought he'd put it in the dryer but hadn't actually done it. :p His memory is iffy, sometimes. :( Anyway, I had dinner out with him, my aunts, and my sister tonight. They're all doing stuff tomorrow, but I need a day to myself. So, I'm going to finally start working on my next reply. Hopefully I will get it done and up, as the...

Today was another weird day. The water was supposed to be off today, but they never actually turned it off. Of course, by the time I discovered it wasn't going to be turned off, I was already up, bathed, and annoyed. Add to that, I had to use the ice-pack at 6 A.M. just to get up! I do not like early mornings! Needless to say, I've been grumpy all day. :(

Right...but from the player POV there is also a bit of a social contract that they will follow the adventure presented by the DM rather than go down rabbit holes. So miscommunications can happen. As DM I think I am presenting a few different choices, one of which is obvious folly while the players end up focusing on on the obvious and not the folly because they are thinking the other side of...

DMs shouldn't plan outcomes according to some story line...They should set up the dominoes and it is up to the players to decide how to knock them down. If the situation is that there is some raging battle with the BBEG hiding out in his lair and the PCs don't have the resources to make it through the battle and still conquer the BBEG, then provide some means for them to save/recharge...

Releasing his weapon, which reshapes into a mote of starlight and starts orbiting around the vesk once more, Sobec walks up to said woman and binds her wrists behind her back. It is said that she visited the sacred halls of the Teraphim and betted her soul in a game of life and death. She emerged victorious, and as a prize they gave her the gift to control such storms, sending them away and calling them forth at will. No one knows it there’s any truth to the legend, but as the arcane residues rolled through her fingers, it seemed, for a second, that the clouds answered her gestures, mimicking them in the distance… Lyllie glances dawn once more, only to contemplate the path they just came from. A few minutes behind, just below her feet, she sees an ox cart coming up, carrying a pair of dwarves and escorted by four others. Clearly, they’ve been followed, either by allies or by opportunists. His tone suggests that bandits and yeomen might be present, a somewhat shy interpretation, considering the details found within the library. He also mentions a second way, through a trail that goes down into the mountains, but can’t bring himself to recommend the trip. “I’d rather face just some poachers… Down there things are odd, scarce of sanity, people say…” – he scratches his moustache as he unpacks a crossbow, looking around. “Your choice, though…” – he begins to man the weapon as the servants build a small tent, closer to the edge. [You may help yourselves to the simple supplies brought any time. Torches, oil and some food are available. Icosa’s arrival is not ignored as well, his presence being far less inconspicuous than the warforged would have desired. A few servants mention his presence in soft, whispered tones, up until one of them comes closer, offering food and beverages, his puzzled face ranging between pleasantness and experimentation. “Sir?” – he pushes the tray towards Icosa, waiting for an answer as some other servants watch curiously. A rich decoration shares place with flora gathered from many parts of the world, probably brought from the artificial gardens of Wallis. At the back, a pool of hot water awaits those willing to refresh themselves from the trip. Stairs lead to the bedroom section, at least as far as you can see. “Welcome, champions! This would leave most single class characters between 6 and 7, if I recall correctly. GOLD: 1000 GP plus 1d20 x25GP. We can go standard or high magic, depending on your tastes. By the book like from Velkenvelve to Sloobludop? Narrative style to get past the boring bits and advance the story? Either way I'll use the book to make sure you get a feel for how travel through Darklake is. Shushar, the drow-blooded paladin turns to the Kuo-toa, Do you think that you could navigate your way to Gracklestugh? Shushar is walking in circles (something he does when he's nervous). "Huh? Oh. Yes. I can get you to Gracklstugh. We best get some boats and get moving. Eventually my brethren will return and I don't expect they'll treat us as well as last time." So you are heading back into the village to look for supplies (and JustinCase mentioned any unattended loot). You will find the two boats and supplies your hosts had prepared for you easily enough. Erevan would probably remember that there was a pile of offerings in the Ploop's (the Archpriest to the Sea Mother) tent that was probably the choicer stuff from the shrine. How much time do you want to spend searching? Anywhere else? You are going to Gracklstugh by boat. then? How far do you go before you long rest and do you take any precautions? The lake isn't a lake in the proper sense. It is a series of pools, large and small lakes all connected by a maze of (usually) water filled tunnels. Shushar can probably find some solid ground to rest on once you are away. I want to just kind of narrate this part of your journey until something really interesting happens rather narrate day by day travel.

Well, my "accidental planewalker" PC moved to a new game... so one more game down already. I hope your game is going better. One thing I'm noting is that in every game, everyone is excited at first, and there is tremendous energy by everyone to create new PCs... and it seems that little of that gets carried forward, ie the momentum fizzles fast. I don't know how we can keep this momentum going. That seems to be the thing missing, otherwise it's more of a "PC creating experience"... Oh nooo, I'm sorry to hear that! But hey, if you're up for giving PbP another chance, join eayres's game! He's in that game I joined (The Dwimmermount) that stopped me from signing up for The Village. I joined his new one too, because he's a great RPer, which makes me think he'll be a fun storyteller as DM. So far it's three women signed up, so come crash the party and provide some balance. ;) And hey, while I'm calling out people in this thread to join, paging JustinCase...you should too. :)

So, I'm thinking about recreating an old PC of mine that I loved playing. Brother Pi is a dwarf with a very shady past who travelled far and was eventually trained in an oriental monastery in the mystical arts of stealth, contemplation and murder. (He used to be a monk, but now I want to try ninja because it feels like a better fit.) When he finally reached the point that his conscience protested at the acts he was tasked to commit, he ran away and is seeking a quiet life, being kind and gentle. Brother Pi is partially based on the character of Uncle Iroh of Avatar: Last Airbender, although he sometimes acts more like jolly Pikel (Cleric Quintet). Sounds interesting... Would this be a suitable character in this campaign? Yes and no. There is no oriental traditions in the Lands of Harqual, although there are monastic traditions. Since this is a far traveled character, it is possible he came to the continent from Kulan's Far East, which exists in the Eastern Lands of Kanpur. Think of ...

"Don't like bats anymore," Caerth mutters to himself as he once again starts casting a spell, this time calling on the very air he breathes, the wind that makes the bats fly, focusing it and calling across the planes to a creature with great affinity to this particular element. A roughly humansized being appears, translucent, almost as if it is mostly not there, consisting of the very air within the cavern. It takes more than a few second for the air elemental to appear. The air swirls around Caerth as the planar being coalesces in front of him and he is forced to concentrate on the spell to ensure the casting forms properly. Hopefully, the dire bats won't interrupt his spell. OOC: Spell's casting time is 1 round.

Casting Summon Nature's Ally to summon an air elemental. If I'm not mistaken, it can act immediately. I'd like for it to attack the bats, especially the dire ones. The casting time for the spell is 1 round, so it can act immediately on your next turn.

I am, as always, interested. However, I'm in 4 games currently and with my wedding coming up in a month, I cannot guarantee I have enough time to fully commit. Which means I want in, but there is a chance I might drop out. Well, since you're in the Crow God game, you have a spot if you really want it. And if you have to drop out, so be it. Or if you have to take breaks from the game, so be it. You've been a good player, so I'm flexible. As far as region or setting is concerned, I have no real preferences. The more I think about it, the more I want to go with the legacy game set in Cauldron City. It know the setting well and I've placed Mor's End* in the same region, so it could become a Cauldron/Mor's End game. I just have to figure out which module I want to start with. * The old EN World city project.

Looking up at the bats moving around the ceiling, Caerth hesitates for a moment as he mentally lists his prepared spells and their possible uses. Eventually reaches a decision and starts casting. On the ceiling, fast growing roots and vines appear that try to grasp the bats as they start panicking. Many of the bats are entwined by the druid's spell, but some many of them get free. A few screech in anger an fly down towards the druid, Lorien, and Phar. The bard manages to activate his cure wand* on himself, once, before the bats begin flapping around their heads. OOC: Quinn will still get the flock out. Quinn exists the cavern just before Phar's fireball spell goes off, scattering the rats. Glancing back towards the cavern, he watches as Caerth studies the ceiling and then casts a spell. Quinn doesn't see the results, but he does hear many of the bats screech. Soon there are bats flapping around the trio left in the cavern, but there aren't as many as the fist group of bats. Quinn can pi...

Knowledge (nature): [roll0] Could I place the Entangle spell so none of us are caught in it but just the swarm? You can place it on the ceiling where the bats currently are. That would trap them up there and give the PCs time to retreat. Note that Reflex negates. Instead of saving just once, I'm going to have the bats save in four groups. Only if all four saves are successful, will the bats swarm. If one, two, or three save, the PCs will just have to deal with a handful of individual bats instead of a swarm.

I'm not sure whose turn it is. Is it mine? Because I don't know what else I can do against these swarms... Well, I want you guys to consider actions for round 5 before I go on to round 6. Phar's fireball took out the rat swarm. The first bat swarm is fleeing to the chasm and the second bat swarm attacks at the top of round 6. You could try to hits the dire rats but that would mean moving deeper into the cavern not out of it. EDIT: Unfortunately, call lightning takes one round to cast, but I would consider it an area spell since 'All creatures adjacent to the square the bolt landed in are dealt 1 point of electrical damage per caster level'. Entangle might be a better choice. Caerth has that memorized too. He could cast it before the bats swarm as long as recognizes the risk. Most of the bats are still clinging to the ceiling. That Knowledge (nature) check I noted. previously.

"Don't know," Caerth replies as he moves his fingers over some of the magical plants the druid uses for spellcasting. Whispering some powerful words, increasing in volume, a slight breeze around the half-orc likewise increases in intensity until a sudden gust erupts. Caerth aims the spell into the mass of bats all-around Lorien and Phar, which causes the bulk of the bats to be blown back into the corridor behind the two elves. The bulk of the swarm of bat are blown away into the corridor beyond. The winds cause them to slam into each other and the walls of the corridor. "Whoa!" Lorien yells. "Warn me next time!" The elven bard cannot move in the gust of wind and he loses his grip on his everburning torch. OOC: Bat swarm is blown back [roll0] times 10 feet and takes [roll1] nonlethal damage. | Lorien doesn't take any damage but he can't move towards Caerth and he has a -4 on ranged attacks and Listen checks until Caerth's next turn.

Hmm, gust of wind is actually a pretty good idea... If that doesn't work, he'll use wild shape next round. I forgot to include this in what Caerth would have known when dealing with a swarm of flying creatures... "Swarms made up of Diminutive or Fine creatures are susceptible to high winds such as that created by a gust of wind spell. For purposes of determining the effects of wind on a swarm, treat the swarm as a creature of the same size as its constituent creatures." -SRD

Knowledge (nature): [roll0] Caerth knows that the swarm see through blindsense and can detect anything within 20 feet of the swarm. As well, a swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target spells such as disintegrate), with the exception of mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects) if the swarm has an Intelligence score and a hive mind. A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells. The bat swarm is immune to all weapon damage. However, Caerth knows a a lit torch will hurt the swarm and thrown lit lantern as well. Also, the energy from a flaming or frost weapon will do full damage even though the weapon itself won't.

Phar rubs his chin thoughtfully and then puts his keen elven ears to use listening for the swarm to approach from some other direction. "I think it best we finish off the dire rat and get moving again. I suspect that we haven't seen the last of the swarm." OOC: Listen is +4 if needed. "Agreed," Lorien asserts. He leads the way back out of the room towards the corridor they came in through, trusting Phar's ears. As Phar listens for any signs of rats, he notes that there are sounds coming from the other side of the cavern's wall, near the opening. And he sees what looks like gaps in the rock face above. Not huge ones, but more than big enough for rats. His ears soon hear the telltale sound of the rats crawling along the caverns walls and can see a few of them appearing on the wall above them. Phar has just enough time to warn everyone before the swarm appears again. OOC: Phar's Listen check > 1d20+4=23 (you just beat my Move Silently roll by 1) :D ". . . . . perhaps. . . . .What?" ...

Reaching forward with his spear, Caerth attempts to hit one of the remaining dire rats while still musing over the creatures' odd behavior. "Could be magic. Or some sort of sickness. Or perhaps..." ". . . . . perhaps. . . . .What?" asks Quinn, his eyes watching the unusually aggressive creatures.

Reaching forward with his spear, Caerth attempts to hit one of the remaining dire rats while still musing over the creatures' odd behavior. "Could be magic. Or some sort of sickness. Or perhaps..." Caerth's spear skewers one of the remaining rats. He pulls it off the web, as it remains impaled on his spear. It doesn't look mangy or frail. It fact, it looks plump like it's been feeding well.

Caerth quickly fires an arrow at the other rat before switching to his massive spear for fighting up close. "Nice one, Quinn," the druid compliments the chain fighter. He then braces himself, spear pointed towards the oncoming rats. Caerth's bow shot skewers one of the rats struggling forward towards him and the others. The rat swarm continues to try to strugle forward, but cannot free itself. The mass of rats tries to gnaw its way free, and few do slip back into the narrow caves, but none of them can move forward towards the group. Phar unlimbers his own bow and lets fly at the first rat. The other dire rat coming forward is killed by Phar's own bow shot.
