About Zansy
Introduction:
A Responsible Spellcaster and fun loving D&D gamer who eccentrically pulls pranks on my familliar.
About Me:
Introduction: Hi ^_^ my Name is N., but I'd rather be known as Zan, Zansy, Zanse, Prince Zahn, PZ and multiple other variants.
MY LIFE: I live by the Mediterranean (which is a fantastic sea, by the bye!), currently serving my country via volunteer work, the goal after that is University, ideally to major in Psychology in the states but we'll see :).
I like my games fantasy (especially if it has magic); my books - historical; my TV and movies - funny, and my webcomics to be slice of life-comedy with extra feels.
I'd like to think of myself as NG with lawful and eccentric tendencies, but I have harmless intentions whether I like it or not.

HOBBIES (besides RPGs), I like to write, to get ideas and to ramble :p, I also like music of many genres, with special bias towards 60's and 80's rock musicians - especially Bruce Springsteen! Also Billy Joel is great!

GAMES: I like and play primarily D&D(3.x or 5) and (sometimes) PF. Would like to try a Numenera game sometime, but no pressure.
My gaming turn-ons are: light adventuring, shenanigans (as long as they stay petty and benign, high magic, good roleplay(+fair play) with fun loving players, relatable characters (PCs AND NPCs), when crunch supports fluff, games with values (such as morals, use of literary tools, imparting insight, wisdom or inspiration). Death with significance (I'd practically worship a DM who can pull off shakespearean caliber death-scene significance B^])DMs who support bold Player ideas (I tend to have a few ideas on the forums that are a bit "out there" (feel free to ask me about it sometime!), I prefer my DMs be at least open-minded to suggestions and requests thrown his/her way - it could be fun!!!
Gaming turn-offs include: bickering, DMPCs (PCs are the story's main heroes, and the DM should remember that when planning encounters) redundant badgering, anti-casters (both builds and DMs who punish players for casting damage spells - yes, this is a thing, make sure you aren't one :O!) Cheese and power gaming can also take fun out of a game for me.

OTHER GAMES:Mutants and Masterminds also sounds cool in concept, but I easily get lost in point pools of any kind >_< would like to try and learn it regardless since I have a few ideas I'd like to try with it!

IN CONCLUSION: I'm a kind stranger, responsible wizard and Springsteen fan with a lot to offer - if you have any questions or just want to chat, you can always PM me, I'm a delight! XD

My Character:
My charactER? no plural? 8\
I guess I like to play casters, primarily arcane but divine can be nice, other forms of magic are a case by case.
I sometimes make decisions which aren't covered by the rules, but normally it is subject to DM approval and rules interpretation.
When playing my casters I sometimes limit my spell list to a common theme, such as fire magic, counterspelling, mind-affecting effects or... Heck, necromancy (why not?), some themes are harder to pull off, thus spells may occasionally require "a little color in the right shade" to fit in, but never mechanically changed.

Lastly, as mentioned above I like to experiment with my characters, always checking the limits of the notoriously carte blanche arcanists in terms of creativity (rarely power)

Klep, Orsik and Evander are up Zansy, Ranger20 and Marcelus20. Ezraen and the drow in the tower are locked in melee...both have taken hits but seem all right (the drow's blade slid between Ezraen's ribs but somehow missed any vitals). The drow in the guard post is out of sight of everyone and has stopped blowing his horn. You can still hear the monsters buzzing and shreiking and drow officers shouting orders but can't see what is happening.

...e drow who eventually convinced them to join in a war between the dwarves of Mithral Hall and the drow of Menzoberrenzan. The drow were defeated and repulsed but over time they rebuilt their forces and eventually laid siege to the now revealed city. Alone the gnomes were no match for the drow, Blingdenstone fell and it's citizens that survived taken away in chains. Within the last few decades, a few have begun to return to their ancestral homeland. But from what you are able to learn that all hangs in the balance. Drow raids and monsters of the underdark make life difficult and lately attacks by earth elementals and strange oozes have made things even more so. You get the impression that many in Blingdenstone desire to return to the old days of living in secrecy so they are suspicious of strangers, but at the same time their hands are so full that they may welcome anyone who could help them. What help they might offer you might depend on what help you can offer them. Zansy, are you making any attempt to hide your motivations from the gnomes? If so, make a deception check to be opposed by their 'passive' insight (10).

Surana is part of the cleaning detail that passes through the guard tower as Bertram finishes exploring it. When it comes time for one person to go clean the quarters of Ilvana and Shoor, Surana convinces the guards she was the one assigned to the task. They look at eachother, shrug and two of them escort her in. The lowest chamber belongs to Shoor. It contains cushions laid out across floor mats, a small carved table with two chairs and a sturdy zurkhwood chest. The room is unoccupied. Lying among the cushions is Klep's Dulcimer (ooc: Zansy did you have a flute too or are you just proficient?). It appears Shoor has claimed it as his own and has been fiddling with it. The chest is locked. On the table are some papers with elvish script and a rough map of the outpost showing barricades at the tunnels, the locations of traps and lines from the guard tower and this one intersecting at key places like the passages into the cavern and at the catwalk linking the two towers. You notice there are arrow slits corresponding to these. The room above is also unoccupied. Inside the walls are hung with black mesh resembling a spider's web, extending from a central spot on the ceiling out to the walls, then draped down like curtains. Thick woven mats cover the floor, while a low platform is covered with cushions and pillows to make a broad divan like bed. One side of the chamber contains a small table and two chairs, while the other holds a small, shrine to Lolth, draped in white silk. A heavy chest of black stained zurkhw...

Herobizkit, DMAesh, itcomeswithamap, Zansy, JustinCase, Ranger20, Marcelus14 I created a new Rogue's Gallery thread that I'd like to use to keep track of the current cast of characters. I have a table at the beginning to remind everyone who the PCs are (and their player) as well as some stats that are useful to me (I may add ability scores and trained saves and skills...but for now that seemed cluttered...Also included is the current cast of NPCs. When you have a chance, place post your character sheet into this thread and use it to track the current condition of your character as best you can. I'll update the links on the OP of this thread. I'll get the next turn posted today or tomorrow... http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?470797-RG-Uller-s-Out-of-the-Abyss-Character-Tracking

Zansy The only ones you need to read are the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Dark Elf Trilogy (basically the first 6; the Dark Elf Trilogy happens before the CS trilogy). Everything else is... uh... superfluous. ;) But f'reals, read the Dark Elf Trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn) - it's a great resource for Drow culture.

Well it didn't feel like a slow start to me, but that's probably because I'm the one who got to act. :) (It felt particularly not slow when you posted your response and I had to go read the result of that 1. I cringed through that whole parahraph.) The vibe is definitely interesting. It's claustrophobic and terrifying and sort of oh-man-don't-touch-or-do-anything. This is hell's boring waiting room, and all the doors are locked. Do nothing? Get beat up. Obey? Get beat up. Play with your cute mushroom friend? MADNESS CHECK. So yeah, Surana feels like it's time to shut up & sit down at this point... Zansy, hah, no way is she the sanest! Her CHA & WIS are meh. I built Surana to be a damage-eater (should she survive to level 3, the plan was to go Totem Warrior/Bear), but in restrospect, I think I was worried about all the wrong kinds of damage.

Edit: was using 'Durin' for place holder until the dwarf had a name...fixed it. Zansy and Ranger20 it is Klep and Orsik's turn... I'm switching to 'you' as we get more PCs...when things apply to one specific character I'll say which one. Orsik is a hill dwarf cleric (light) of Moradin. You are have been dragged and prodded for quite some distance. Probably several leagues as the crow flies (or as the purple worm burrows?). It's all a blur, a waking nightmare. Throughout the ordeal you were both relentlessly mocked and tormented by your dark elf captors. Among your fellow captives are two humans and an elf that were badly injured when they were captured (there are a few others as well...8 total). They were dragged along, tormented, prodded. As the ordeal went on, it became clear they were not going to survive without healing magic. When you suggested to your captors that you help them, you were just laughed at. Now you have arrived at the drow outpost. You are herded into a basket/lift inside a large cavern and hoisted up up up above a canopy of sp...

I couldn't have said it better myself :) As I understand, I need to await my turn, then? If so, I guess I'll get to it tomorrow, or something.(^w^);> Thanks. I had fun writing it. It's a lot easier for me to be more of a story teller in this format than at the table...I can't promise I can do as well with everyone's start (and it was a bit long...maybe I should avoid doing that). Normally I start a campaign with something like "So you're all caravan guards (fill in how you came to be there later) and orcs attack...roll initiative..." to get things moving. But it seemed starting like this is an important part of the adventure so I kept it...it will be a bit of a slow start, but I'm sure things will get exciting soon enough. Yes, Zansy, you just need to wait until the next group of characters arrive. My son (@Ranger20) made his rolls in front of me this evening before heading out with his friends. He rolled: d6=2 and d20=4 so the two of you will start together when the next group of prisoners arrive.

Well, Zansy, I'm a big proponent of people playing what jazzes them. If that's drow in an Underdark campaign, then that's drow. I won't speak for Uller, but my thought that a surface dweller would be spades of fun was intended for someone on the fence about what to play. The right players can get by with playing a burlap sack and still make for a diverting game.

  • 11:00 PM - Herobizkit mentioned Zansy in post Any interest in a PbP Out of the Abyss (players or DMs)?
@Zansy No worries. You mentioned that Bards were out of your comfort zone and I was all "You don't even KNOW, maaaan! Bards rock on toast with Fluff AND Nutella!" ^_^ To further that sentiment, I was lauding the bard's many fantastic abilities to try and show you that you have literally nothing to be worried about, mechanically or otherwise, for choosing a Bard. Also, while Half-Elf Bard might be considered a "powergame" concept, it's one I've been playing since, oh... 2nd edition, and it was anything BUT "powergame-y" til now. And to that I say, GOOD, we Bard players earned it. *lol*
  • 03:35 PM - Herobizkit mentioned Zansy in post Any interest in a PbP Out of the Abyss (players or DMs)?
Zansy Again, you're missing the point. Bard is likely comparable to "tier 1" now - MAYBE "tier 2". Once you get to 3rd, you can choose to go down one of two paths - Lorebard, which allows you to poach spells from any class (and often earlier than said class gets it themselves), or Skald, which makes you a fighter in medium armor and shield. Half-Elf + Bard = You Win All The Things. :)
  • 03:16 PM - Herobizkit mentioned Zansy in post Any interest in a PbP Out of the Abyss (players or DMs)?
Zansy No, quite the opposite - there is _nothing_ bad about the Bard. On top of that, it is arguably one of the strongest 5e classes (historically, it's been a sub-par class and subject of much ridicule trope-wise).
  • 10:56 AM - Herobizkit mentioned Zansy in post Any interest in a PbP Out of the Abyss (players or DMs)?
@Zansy Bard is argubaly the power class in 5e; if you don't love it, I'll eat @Marcelus14 's illicit baked goods. I have a hankering for a Halfling or a Dragonborn character. I might go out of my comfort zone and do something wacky like, say, Halfling Ranger or Dragonborn Paladin. (I almost always play Bards or Warlocks. ;))

... am a big fan of the rules and try to avoid house ruling as much as possible, I feel it adds stability to the player experience. When rulings are necessary, I tend toward recognizing and respecting balance. As far as player creativity and resource usage, I’m much more likely to favor players exploiting in-game factors than I am players exploiting text in the Player’s Handbook. At the end of the day, we’re all here to have fun and enjoy ourselves, so I will do my best to meet that expectation. New to enworld and 5e. I would love to join in a campaign but I cannot find any references to build a character. I do not own any 5e books. I have 3.5 PHB. If your willing to share some info I would like to join the party. Hi, happy to have new players interested in the game. Along with the help from the other players here like Zansy, you can always download the 5E Basic Rules PDF from Wizards of the Coast. It has limited information on character building. It only presents the four basic/main classes (Cleric, Fighter, Thief, Wizard) and only offers one of the potential paths those classes take, but the PDF does go into detail about how the game works. Here's the link: http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/playerdndbasicrules_v0.2.pdf Coming from 3.5, it shouldn't be a huge change depending on what you want to play. There are a LOT less modifiers to worry about, most of them being distilled into an Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic. I skipped 4E and didn't really miss a beat when I came back to 5E from 3.5.

@Zansy I have no problem with reflavoring spells. So if you wanted to turn Tasha's into something like Shortness of Breath with the same mechanics, I'd be down for it. As far as Color Spray, it has the Sleep problem, but could still work for more of a finishing AoE than an opener. Everyone: Sorry, I'm feeling a little under the weather. I went to bed early last night, but still need to go to work today. I'll try my best to get to the updated sheets this evening or today. Thanks for your efforts. Also a bump for anyone considering submitting, the thread is open for about another week.

@Zansy Sure thing. The adventure is an existing 3rd Party 5e adventure that I filed the serial numbers off of to fit the over-arching story. There are opportunities for combat, exploration, and some social interaction. As written, there's a decent amount of combat, but I'm pretty open to interesting ways of resolving problems. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I might be able to tolerate it. if they gave out the code of conduct and stuck to just the anathemas and the other rules deities have (their name eludes me at the moment. I apologize--) that would have been fine, it's weird to me that paladins have to follow more rules than, say, clerics of the same faith, but lose everything they have going if they break any of them. even if you put aside all those extra, universal rules - even if Clerics could theoretically "convert" in PF1 and 3.5e by changing deities, paladins don't have that privilege except to be the exact opposite of what he was, and most players don't even get that. once again - 1 flavor of paladin ice cream. with several other shapes of sprinkles. Shapes - not even flavors. I think they are using a *deontological approach (the same as D&D core previous) because the Paladin (unlike the cleric) is being asked to do things th...

I’m with you Song, but classically, the Paladin features are a snap on to a knight foundation, differentiated by their alignment. Knights have a code of honor/chivalry but the Paladin also has the church which adds the lawful good requirement. It’s only because the game has a polytheistic bent and socially accepts churches of other alignments that the broad interpretation of paladins can exist. Personally, I’d call them something else that evokes imagery appropriate to their faith. I think it is less about devotion and more about virtue. If not the holy part or religious champion... what makes a paladin different from a fighter? I mean, you could just add an oath option to the fighter... Paladin's Oath: (Prerequisit fighter, Lawful Good), you swear an oath to uphold the good and righteous, and you gain a +X bonus. If you ever perform an evil act, you lose this bonus. Edit: that actually makes it more historically accurate as well. That still doesn't answer the que...

okay, first of all you are putting words in my mouth. That is why I said I was sorry u_u What makes your super-narrow definition for paladin more legitimate than my more broadly applicable one? What makes you think all those "necessary tropes", which include among them being a stick in the mud, or "the party babysitter", a positive thing? You are definining the paladin as you think it should be, and make the distinction between a holy warrior and a paladin. Now, I'm not a historian or anything, but I think that's a misleading distinction. In our reality, Paladins, from what I could tell, are, these big-shot Elite knights that were originally charlamagne's closest people. They were, again, from what I could tell, religious, but at his time, most people, if they were somebody important in Europe, were religious. It doesn't speak much to me. As a foundational point that paladins have to be Lawful Good and serve a Lawful Good deity any more than if we were discussing those codes on a Cleri...

PF2 is repeating the same grudge I had with the paladins in PF1. I'm rather disappointed by the perceived inflexibility that paladins have in both PF1 and PF2. all that PF1 had to offer was "The paladin is LG flavor with different shapes of sprinkles on it." That's a very narrow vision for what paladins are and can be, even for the core game (Especially when you say that the rogue, in contrast, is having her options and horizons broadened!) I hope that if and when they move on they'll be able to contemplate that quite a few people don't want to play the paladin because there's only one interpretation of it. the idea of different types of paladins are best off already in the core game, and not a peripheral, or perhaps obscure, supplementary product. On paper, If there was any room for interpretation for what LG is, and what their code of conduct should be. Same here. I am purchasing those 3 books tonight. I wish they had some of the play test adventures available. My group is currently going through Legacy of the Crystal Shard. Oh, and thanks to all who responded to questions I posted earlier. I am definitely going to give this a shot... even though it'll be at least the 3rd time that I have purchased the content (physical, Fantasy Grounds, D&D Beyond, DM's Guild...) I currently use FG at the table. But, this may be a better option for when the entire group is present. I'm surprised the article didn't mention that the 3 core books are on sale for the week of the launch... that convinced me to buy them instantly with a master subscription.

  • 05:07 PM - Mephista quoted Zansy in post Explore New Fey Options For 5E & Pathfinder With THE FAERIE RING
Only in a sense that there are ways and source books that help do that, such as using material from a plethora of books or checking a broader scale campaign setting, while looking for it in a book exclusively from it's own interpretation of fey is rather unsuited for you. Personally I'm more into campaigns that explore small regions better than those that travel the world. But everyone has their own preference over salt and pepper. :p By that rationale, we don't need this one either - this style material has been done to death. Just crack open some 3e books, and you're done. And yet, people are donating towards it. And, even if we're talking a small location... its clearly heavily forest based. Meanwhile, look at the Land Druid and Ranger. Look at all the land types. Artic, swamps, deserts, grasslands, mountains, swamps, underdark in addition to forests. That's eight land types that are common in a Medieval setting. And the book has a strong focus on forest settings and creature...

Well luckily for you guys ENW sends me notifications whenever somebody posts in a thread I post in, Or when I'm mentioned/quoted/XP'd/Laughed and that I don't know how to turn it off. So you can count on me lurking until I can make room. Thank you :) Haha, well, I'll tell you how to fix that in case it's bothering you, but I hope you come back anyway! Click "Settings" up at the top of the page. That will take you to a page with all of the threads you're subscribed to. (If you don't see any at first, click the "view all subscribed threads" button.) These are the threads you get notifications for. You can check the boxes next to them and then choose to unsubscribe, or change subscription method (for example, you can switch to a weekly notification instead of an instantaneous one for every post). Hope that helps.

Hey guys I don't mean to disappoint, really, I didn't want to come to this because I never have before, but I'm afraid I'll have to drop out of this adventure - not at all because I want to. But rather because I don't have another option other than neglect it and leave you guys hanging. So consider me out of the game----or at least on indefinite leave. If and when things change for me at some point, and Uller and you guys are still going would be willing to take me back, I'll gladly come back - you guys are awesome :) I wish you luck and sanity where it is most needed. Thanks for having me guys. Thanks, Zansy. Just so everyone knows, if the you hit a patch of life and need a break, you are more than welcome to just go in lurk mode for a bit and come back when things free up for you. At a typical table game, I find typically only 2 or 3 players are ever really truly engaged most of the time and that's okay. As long as folks let us know when they are going to be unable to post, it's all good. Should have something to post to move the game along in a bit...

Hey guys real life is a little hectic lately so it could take some time before I can make an IC post. I'm sorry. No worries. When you get a chance post your turn. If it you can't get to it in a day or so we'll just assume you move with the group and help someone. I may have to post for Ranger20. He's under observation for a concussion after a hockey game...(I'm pretty sure he's all right).

While I still have time to scheme my turn and waiting to be unshackled, are any enemies in range for me to mock most viciously? EDIT: DMAesh you intrigue me with this plan of yours. Fill me in on it I wanna help :heh: Oh, it just involves a little pain, but I think that we need to hit that drow in the watchtower!

I'd like to offer Bardic Inspiration dice to Surana and Bertrum, if desired. Should I make speeches or something? If my flute is ready, could I play something? You are welcome to make speeches or describe how you go about using bardic inspiration but I don't require it any more than I require a a fighter player stand up and demonstrate his prowess with a blade...So you can do as you like. itcomeswithamap, I'll roll your d6 so I can describe what you find... [roll0] Herobizkit, make sure you include a d6 on your roll. As for crafting your flute, you're not proficient with woodcarver's tools and what tools you have are pretty sub-par...so maybe by the time the escape happens you'll have something approximating a flute.

no problem :) should I add that gold coin to inventory or to currency? :) I'll try to find time for a post sometime soon. By the way, That's a nice looking new avvie, Uller! what is it? :P Inventory for now. All these items you've gotten so far are right out of the book. I add some flavor, the the coin, the flint shard, the spider...all from the book. It's what the d20 roll at the beginning was all about (yes...I like pulling the curtain back on my games for my players to see...otherwise everything is like a joke that no one else understands). Maybe later the coin will mean something...(Valar Morghulis?)...maybe not. The avatar is Ullr...Norse god of hunting. thought I'd make my avatar fit my name.

I just stole a line from translate and used it in a song. :$ I put a link to the translation, but if someone were to ask in character what that phrase meant, he translates. Oh I see. Sure.

I always imagine my orcs with this sort of deep Nigerian accent. If asked, Klep will gladly translate and help along. Should I roll Charisma? Could I add Performance to it? What are you trying to translate? You can make an insight check to see if you notice that Surana is helping you win the bet. I'll answer the rest of your post later tonight or tomorrow AM.

May as well. I'd also like to make a wisdom/intelligence check to see if the deep gnome with the gambling addiction has an angle. :p [roll0] [roll1] With insight that's a 9...Still not enough to figure out what his angle might be. But enough to figure out that he's probably got a leg up somehow. Whatever the animosity between Jorlan and other the drow is, it's probably just normal drow stuff. As far as Klep is concerned, they treat outsiders like jerks...they probably treat eash other like jerks too.

So what you are saying is, itcomeswithamap's character is arguably the sanest character here? You realize your anecdote just doomed her to die first? :P Well she did roll a 19 on a madness save...so....
