About EthanSental
Introduction:
DM in NW Georgia - 5e currently
About Me:
Started playing back in highschool in the mid to late 80s. When my high school friends moved away for college I was lucky enough to start another group of friends in to the fantastic realm of roleplaying. 3 of us have been playing pretty much ever since with breaks here and there and swapping up DM chores as needed. Played mainly 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and now 5e with PF thrown in to replace 4e, but also includes a bit of Marvel superheroes and other game systems as well.
I enjoying painting minis when I have time but pick up the plastic minis as well.

I'll be interested to see how it all plays out, for sure. I'd love a BECMI box set, but the price is too steep for my blood, unfortunately. It does seem ambitious, yes, but Frank seems to be trying to do it right and get lots of help. Some hefty pledge levels there though, for what you seem to get. YMMV. EthanSental: Darlene was the artist who did the big two poster hex map of Greyhawk from the original folio and box set - HUGE nostalgia factor for new maps by her. And just to point out, Tal'Dorei was a single hardcover book, I believe? This will be more akin to the old campaign box sets from TSR - multiple booklets, poster maps, etc. So much more expensive to produce.

  • 11:53 AM - gyor quoted EthanSental in post Favourite D&D edition thatís not 5E
Voted 2e, settings and nostalgia as it was the edition I played the most, holding out a couple of years into 3e. I came to enjoy 3e but my younger self was enthralled with the 2e games played with my friends. Yeah it didn't have the best mechanics, but it was when alot of Settings were created and were properly detailed.

The picture above isnít great but I get the feeling wizkids is going for a scorched metal look. Iíll wait for Pogre to surprise us with a painted one in his mini thread later on in the year :) If I paint one it will be for a commission. I need a vehicle in my game more akin to the old Snotling Pump Wagons! Rowdy, drugged-up goblins are closer to my game's aesthetic. ;) Still, it looks pretty cool in the pictures. Then again, I thought the big ship they made looked awesome in the pictures, but was disappointed when I saw it in person.

I'm hoping it looks better in person, but yeah, I haven't been feeling the latest special covers so much. having looked at at the special FLGS cover, man I canít get the thought that it looks like a high school art piece by your friend who draws weird stuff all the time.

  • 05:34 PM - epithet quoted EthanSental in post Fantasy Grounds Unity Kickstarter Has Launched
I believe this is the Unity version...at least the FG forum announcement makes it seem that way....Doug might swing by and clarify as heís active on the forum. Looking forward to it as I know Carl has been working on FGU for a bit and like the weather and fog of war. Thanks Doug! This is absolutely the Unity version. The current program will continue on, by the way, as "Fantasy Grounds Classic."

  • 07:33 PM - Haffrung quoted EthanSental in post WotC Considering NPC Stat Format Change
I might have missed it if you mentioned it elsewhere, but got an example rpg game or publisher you mention above so I can see what you mean? Iíve mainly played D&D, pathfinder, some osr games and various superhero games back in the day and just curious of the easier content you mention by other companies. Thanks! Savage Worlds campaigns use a concise writing style with flexible approach (my experience is with the Savage Worlds of Solomon Kane). Deep Carbon Observatory (an OSR adventure) uses a concise writing style and flowcharts. Stonehell Dungeon and the Maze of the Blue Medusa are megadungeons where essential content is presented in single-page graphical format for each level or area. For the most part, these are small companies with designers employing innovative layouts. WotC certainly has the expertise and the resources to integrate some of these innovations. But it's clear to me that they see that as hurting their market of non-playing readers. The reasoning seems to be th...

  • 04:12 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted EthanSental in post B&G's Sinister Silver Edition of Ghosts of Saltmarsh
For me, I'm terrible when it comes to drawing and making props, it'll give an experience that I'm otherwise completely lacking. The last time I tried the whole "use tea to make a weathered piece of parchment," it did not turn out...right. I was thinking along those same lines Ralif.

  • 07:55 PM - Staffan quoted EthanSental in post The New D&D Book Is Called "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" [UPDATED!]
Iím not a big fan of monsters that come out in the 3rd or 4th book of monster cause like in pathfinder and even older editions of D&D, these monsters are less used, fringe and werenít popular or good enough to make it into the earlier books. Monster books are an odd duck. Usually, the mechanical quality of the monsters increase as an edition gets older (because the designers get better at making monsters), but the quality of their concepts go down (because all the good ideas got used early).

I am glad that WoTC is doing them like this though and have them tied to the adventure/book, handful of monsters, naval stuff...mix of everything instead of a 100% book of monsters in a bestiary that only has 5% that Iíll use.....new format works for me as a DM and as an enthusiast! I really liked the loose leaf 2E Monstrous Compendiums. I still have all of them in one huge binder. I really miss some of the detail thats since been omitted from 3E-5E, especially the ecology & habitat entries. The Spelljammer MC had some cool monsters, the one that acted like Alien from the movie was great. Killed more than a few PCs with that one. Think I even took out a whole party.
