You are becoming quite frustrated, because you know, in the back of your mind, that it must be something very simple that you're overlooking. Dewydd, these runes make no sense to you AT ALL. Touching nothing, I maintain the 5 foot distance and suggest, "If the runes on those columns spell out Ankharet, chances are good we need to turn them to face the West before we enter the tomb... Something tells me it's for the best," I quip in a whisper with a slight grin.

Merin begins to ponder the possibility of building a lock on the river... such a fortification might prove useful. The lock that he had in mind was a simple, wooden gate that would span the river, two doors that could be pulled together and closed by workmen with ropes. "At least you know who your family is," says Pelegon before explaining that he was raised as an orphan in the monastery. The only family he ever had were the other monks and, much later, his late wife. "Didn't miss the drinks while I was in the monastery, because I didn't try them until rather recently. Beer seems a great way to drown sorrows, but I've learned sorrows learn to swim quickly." ...

Mayhap he asked too many favours already? Then the dragonborn paladin charges forward to aid his friend in defeating the plant monster. Learning from his mistakes,...

"Not sure," Sobec says as he drops his backpack and with one hand takes out a simple pair of binders. "Didn't see anyone, but I suspect only one. Ask the woman." Releasing his weapon, which reshapes into a mote of starlight and starts orbiting around the vesk once more, Sobec walks up to said woman and binds her wrists behind her back. Dropping out of photon attunement.

Do you want to arrange the letters, or do you want me to." Kleborn chimes in, "Whoever does it, let's get it over...

Out of boredom, the aasimar attempts small talk with Everett. Once they make camp, Pelegon leans on his simple wooden staff -- it looks like a plain stick he found in the woods, with little visible alterations -- and...

He sits down, waiting for the signal that they're leaving. Despite his inclination to live in the here-and-now, ponderings about his mentor arise in his mind. Taking out a quill, ink, and paper, I copy the text as I see it and then as Respen translates it. I finish it with some sand to dry the ink.

But Respen's minimum result (26) is so high, that only exotic or truly ancient writing has the chance to elude him. To speed things along, assume that Respen conveys the following to the party: The Uli inscription reads: "...Poisoned pride once broke...

About Tellerian Hawke
Introduction:
Die Hard 3.0 / 3.5 Player
About Me:
I started playing D&D during the Thanksgiving holidays of 1979, using other people's books. My parents bought me the AD&D Player's Handbook in Christmas of 1980. Then, I got my first D&D Basic Set (the Tom Moldvay red cover, with Erol Otus artwork) in August of 1981. Ah, humble beginnings, and fond memories. My first DM was my dad, and bless his heart, he had no clue about where to start. Our first adventures were awkward, to say the least.

If you are curious as to the whole story about my D&D origins, I wrote a memoir about it on my blog:
https://overthetopepicroleplaying.wordpress.com/2015/08/23/memoirs-part-one-how-i-started-playing-dungeons-dragons/

1979 was 5th grade for me. By the time I was in 8th grade, I was playing 1st Ed AD&D, which I stuck with all through high school. (I graduated in 1987.)

In the early 90's I switched to Second Edition, and later to 2nd Ed Skills & Powers, and then I even became a play-tester for 3rd Edition, which was an experience that I must say really endeared me to that particular edition of the game.

I have also written a skeletal framework for my own RPG, although it has never gotten to the playtest stage. I might revisit it one day soon, but in the meantime, I have a lot of other irons in the creative fire. I have an unfinished novel to think about, as well as a non-fiction book I'm writing that covers my family's genealogical record.

I'm a librarian by profession; I hold a master's degree in English, and a master's degree in Library Science, which, in librarian-speak, makes me a subject specialist. I'm what's known as a "Humanities Librarian." As such, I also have a list of ideas for academic papers that I plan to write, and since these are peer-reviewed items that concern the betterment of my career, they form one of the principal reasons why my novel and game system are still languishing on the shelf.

My longest running campaign ("The Fearless Five") was from 1999 - 2005, and it ended up going into epic levels. I pretty much quit running it when I got married, because at that point, my life became super-busy because of my transition from bachelor-with-lots-of-free-time, to husband / head of household / homeowner, and shortly thereafter, father-of-two. That's the main reason I never played 3.5; I had purchased all of the core 3.5 books, and some of the supplements, intending to eventually "switch over"; but a whirlwind romance, and subsequent marriage, cut those plans short. Thus, when I quit playing in 2005, despite having the 3.5 books, all of my knowledge and expertise was still grounded in the 3.0 material.

In July of 2014, at a family reunion, two of my cousins (who had been part of the Fearless Five campaign) expressed a desire to play again, albeit via the internet, using Play-By-Post. So, I made a private, Google Site webpage, scanned the bulk of my old notes, house rules, maps, and character sheets into PDF format, and put it all on the web. I am still running the Fearless Five PbP on that site, although I have plans to move it here, to ENWorld, in the very near future. Since the PbP began, I have slowly been adapting my campaign to the 3.5 rules set, although I must say, I don't agree with some of the changes they've made. So I guess you could say that I am running a 3.0 / 3.5 hybrid. (3.25?)

I came to this website because I wanted to refresh my knowledge, and have someplace to discuss my hobby with others. I was on ENWorld way back when, during the Eric Noah era, and during the first years of Morrus' stewardship also. I used to frequent the site, because I loved keeping up with Blackdirge's custom monsters. At any rate, I enjoyed the site back then, and it stayed with me in my memory, so I found it again, and here I am.

The last two things that I can think to tell you about me, with regard to this mutual hobby of ours, is that I am now, and always will be, a die-hard Greyhawker, and that I like to use Lego minifigs as miniatures, because there's no painting involved, and the figures can be readily modified. If you'd like to see what that looks like, click on the link below.

  • 07:47 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Y 0: D 197: Doldrums 47: Outside the Southern Gate, part 2
Tor says, "Yes, the 2% fee is perfectly understandable. We also have iron bricks, and extra mining tools, among other things, that we'd also be willing to trade. Are there any smiths here that would be interested?" The clerk nods as he speaks. "Yes. So a weaver, a butcher, a metallurgist, and I need to check on the bear. Once you return from speaking with one of the farmers or sheepherders, I should be back with an answer and vendors. Happy Hunting." Speaking with one of the families of sheepherders because it seems the most reasonable to be keeping the burros, the Seekers find them overly impressed with the pack animals, especially when Indigo simply tells them to look after the sheep and stay with them. Though they do not understand Asylin, they are still surprised at the response to spoken commands. They agree to feed and corral the animals for a mere 2 clams, each, a day. The party readily offers 24 clams up front, having no foreknowledge of nor made decision of the possible length of stay. Whe...

Merin ponders this for a moment, "I don't get it. What's the difference between suggesting, 'I am a regular soldier,' and suggesting 'I am a lifelong and trusted friend'? I'm talking about pushing the suggestion, not complete mental control." Sheldon responds quickly, without any real internal deliberation. "This one I understand. It has to do with memory. 'I am a soldier. I am a teamster.' Either of these is more than plausible and common. I would guess that a soldier would have more privilege than a dock worker or caravaner, so I would pick that, instead. 'The lifelong friend' delves into the memory of the other person. It would not be a plausible or even a reasonable suggestion. Neither would something like, 'I am a Magister you fool. Stand aside.' Sure we can develop enough skill to push a ridiculous suggestion, but it would leave residues of stupor. The more reasonable a suggestion; the easier it is to suggest and pass unrealized."

  • 03:53 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Y 0: D 190: Doldrums 40: Discussing Possibilities
GM NOTE: For clarification of vocabulary related to the game, the term tattoo does not exist. The common terms are branded, marked, and painted. The brands on the Asylin citizenry are produced from several different berries that near-permanently dye the skin. The process is not invasive. The term painted refers to indigenous peoples that decorate large portions of their skin, especially their faces. This is most common in Evipau and Norikadians. The term marked refers to simple designs applied to one's own body as a show of expression. The term branded refers to simple marks applied to another's body, sometimes without the receiver's consent. Asylim, Eastaboga, and Thisidaboga all use this to mark criminals. Only Asylim also uses it to make economic class distinctions. (Think India, but the mark is on the arm not the forehead.) Sannit strokes his beard and says, "So with the right skill we can make people see things, but the closer to something plausible, the easier it is to pull off. W...

Maka is pleased to be done with the task, and sees the utility of returning to town, but his mind is still on the wilderness, on the sunlight hitting the treetops, on the fresh breeze blowing over the prairie grass. Maka-Mani Heyah Kokipa shakes himself from his day dream. It is hard into the doldrums. There is no breeze; it is hot, and he has not recently traveled through the grassland. It must be the heat. (Maka) asks the blacksmith about adding a blade or spike to his bow. Mallen listens to Maka desires. It is obvious that he is making mental images. "I think I can do these things for you. You will need to provide me the iron or the coin to replace what I would use from the Kingdom's inventory." (Maka) helps Vittero make jerky out of the extra pork. Once this is done, he will run back to his village for a day or two, to talk with his father about his desire to strike out on his own, and find his grandfather's spirit. With this much meat still in usable condition, Chass Verticort pays the crew 10...

Adisakti replies, "I like that idea, Taylar. Maybe I could convince you father, the blacksmith, to make me some iron caps to fit on the end of my staff." Raven Elk ponders. Finishing his musings and gatherings, Raven Elk then slung the chitinous grub head over his shoulder and strolled back over the hill toward his friends, a wisp of a smile on his lips. Maka nods, adding, “I have been thinking of adding either spikes, or perhaps a blade, to my bow. It will be good to have a more versatile weapon.” Vittero makes an overt huffing noise. "This is a lot of stuff to carry. I want a horse." The seven hour return trip is uneventful. There is no breeze, no rain, and the temperature is hot. Only common insects, reptiles, and birds are seen, with an occasional varmint. Late that afternoon when the crew returns, Richelle greets them all with a hug, (She is like that.) and listens as they relate the tale of the insects. She conveys a particular pride when Raven Elk shows her the grub head and e...

Bolo says, "What if I send Turtle around to scare them toward us? We can position ourselves to compel one each as they run by. Should we get one or two males and the rest female?" Vadin thinks about the idea, and agrees saying, "I think we should try to send turtle to attempt to move them towards us". He looks at Indigo and Sheldon and says, "What ways can I try to compel them beyond simply touch?" GM NOTE: Vadin must reach 10 ranks in the Collegiate Skill before his active range can be extended beyond touch. Saemund watches and listens. "It would be to our advantage of we could simply have them move towards us...we would only have to compel the lead animal to do so." Merin says, “Hmmm, they’re too far away, I’m not sure it’s worth the effort it will take to get close enough to them.” Indigo replies, "They are far away, but I think Saemund has the better idea of it. If we send Turtle at them, we cannot predict which way they will run, but I am figuring that they will scatter. Those of us who...

92384 Kneeling low to use the tall grasses for cover, the party observes the cattle down in the shallow valley from the vantage point of the nearest hill. There appears to be approximately 50 of the common kine, walking slowly northward while they feed. The bulls of the herd are more attentive than the cows; and periodically, one or more of them looks up and around scanning the area for potential danger. Despite the largeness of these herbivores there are still predators of the grassland that could take one down, specifically lions or tigers. Sannit says, "Let's see if we can use Way to coax some of these beasts to follow us. If we can get them to Boga City we can trade them for things we need like we did in Bergbaulbager." Sheldon and Indigo simply nod in response, each absorbed in the moment. Bolo looks over the herd and the surrounding area to try and find any other predators that might be stalking the cattle. Turtle sniffs the air to get a whiff of the cattle. He knows if he's good he'll get...

Maka will attempt to knock his beetle to the ground, and if he can do so, he will follow up with a kick, akin to that of a field goal kicker, trying to score an extra point. The airborne beetle reacts faster than Maka, clacking at him with its mandibles. Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(Attack) + 80(d100) = 100 Maka: 9(Konokoro) + 11(Defensiveness) + 72(d100) = 92 Damage: 100 - 92 = 8% * 6: ineffective While the beetle does, indeed, make contact, its clasp is ineffective. As Maka steps backward to avoid the mandibles, he brings his bow down like a staff to club the beetle. Maka: 12(Fury) + 20(Lethality) + 20(Attack) + 72(d100) = 124 Beetle: 4(defensiveness) + 8(defend) + 80(d100) = 92 Damage: 124 - 92 = 32% * 10 = 3 - 2(soak) = 1 Mind: 2 - 1 = 1: dazed The beetle does go down, but it lands righted, though shaken. During the trip, Merin and Tor stop occasionally to look for animal bones and feathers, especially when they notice vultures in the area. Merin also tries to detect Petra and Carbone, even though he realizes that most of that stuff is found in mountainous regions. Noted. This will be addressed in further posts. Last but certainly not least, Merin is becoming more and more obsessed with developing his fighting skills. During travel, Sheldon spends a great deal of time each evening working with Merin, since both prefer an unarmed fighting style. The styles are remarkable different but both men are about equal in skill. Merin moves with the speed and grace of a striking viper. His body weaves in no discernible rhythm, making it difficult to determine when a strike will come. Sheldon, on the other hand, uses his entire body. He moves like water within a bowl, using his entire body to throw or pin his opponent. Merin is always able to land a punch or kick before Sheldon is able to throw him to the g...

    Maka, seeing that clubbing the beetles has proven to be effective, intends to club his beetle where the top plate meets the bottom. As Maka swings the two beetles approaching him, along with the one remaining on each of the others, sprays a clear liquid from a gland on the front of its head. Beetle: 20(Muddle) + 60(d100) = 80 Maka: 10(Skepticism) + 11(Tranquility) + 62(d100) = 83 Raven Elk: 12(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 91(d100) = 113 Vittero: 15(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 87(d100) = 112 Taylar: 12(Skepticism) + 9(Tranquility) + 75(d100) = 96 Adisakti: 11(Skepticism) + 10(Tranquility) + 83(d100) = 104 This particular spray seems more concentrated than that of the carrion beetles, yet everyone is able to ignore its intended muddling effect. Maka: 11(Fury) + 21(Lethality) + 22(Attack) + 62(d100) = 116 Beetle: 4(Defensiveness) + 8(Defend) + 60(d100) = 72 Damage: 116 - 72 = 44% * 10 = 4 - 2(soak) = 2 Mind: 2 - 2 = 0: unconscious Maka's blow is not quite as well placed as he would have hoped, but...

Although the campfire was extinguished at the end of the evening, it was rekindled with the dawn, and Maka was one of the first to make use of it, warming his hands, and wafting the smoke into his face... Maka waft the smoke about his face as he has observed his elders do until the others are up and about. He knows that this custom has been observed for as long as his people could be called a people, and yet it has to date offered no insight or clarity. His mind drift to practicality as his hands continue the motion subconsciously. ~Perhaps I need to use a special wood. Maybe it is not just any smoke that will do.~ He wishes that the elders were not so tight lipped about the smoke tent and sweat lodge. No one younger than twice Maka's age was permitted to enter those. He has a second epiphany. ~Maybe it is the feather.... No, no, that cannot be. The men carry any old feather they like and some none at all. It has to be the smoke. Maybe they add special herbs to the fire.~ " Good morning, my frie...

Patchwall 22, CY 963. 7:30 AM. Nelvandra greets Respen with a hug and a kiss, the nearness of her scantily clad form providing a tremendous distraction, and temptation. Seeing that Respen is already dressed, she begins to do the same. Nelvandra smiles, and says, "Oooh, has it been four days already? I guess time flies when you're having fun." She gives Respen a wicked, naughty look. As she is picking out her clothes, Nelvandra moves slowly and deliberately, allowing Respen to have a nice, long look at her lithe, graceful form; during this process, Respen notices that she has three objects among her wardrobe that are obviously magical in some regard: her tiara, her bracers, and her ring. It is 8:00 AM by the time Respen and Nelvandra enter Clare's study. Clare seems surprised to see them both so quickly. Clare chuckles, "Is the honeymoon over so quickly?" Nelvandra smiles, and replies, "Not at all, sis, although I was a little disappointed to find him already dressed. Surface dwellers are so f...

Although Tor is able to sleep, Merin cannot. He spends the night watching, waiting, and listening. During the night, he makes a discovery; he finds that he is so focused on keeping a watch for trouble, that his eyes seem to adjust to the darkness, allowing him to see almost as well as he can during the daytime! Quietly, so as not to disturb Sheldon, Merin approaches Indigo, and shares his findings with her. As Saemund makes his patrolling rounds, Merin shares the information with him, also. Night Vision: Range: Self Effectiveness: Essence + Cohesion + Evocation + Emulsion + Mind + Knowledge + Will + Wisdom + Discipline + Acuity + Resolve + Collegiate + Aberrative + Manifest Will / Ayurveda / Philosophy This active task is used to alter the vision of the Bender allowing for him to see better at night. After returning to the guild house San-Bolo rush over to where Sheldon has pointed out the collar but do not approach it yet. "What a strange gift," Sannit says, rubbing his beard. "Was he planning on coming back for it or was part of his purpose here to deliver it to us?" Bolo says, "Sitting on the floor like that it looks like bait for a trap." Tor says, "It does seem strange that he wasn't wearing a collar, and yet, he bears the mark of not only a soldier, but also a caravaner, which means he WAS considered an asset, subservient to a master. For all practical purposes, he was a slave. I wonder if this wasn't his collar, but if it was, why did he remove it? I hate to say it, but perhaps we killed him too quickly." The collar is perfectly centered with the entrance, about 2 paces into the room. It was placed, not idly dropped. Sheldon says, "I think it was intended to be a taunt. I know Merin checked to see if it was emanating any sign of Way manipulation. I did the same thing. There is nothing ...

Sannit keeps his guard long enough to make sure the Stranger is not faking, then San-Bolo go to Sheldon's side to see to their friend first. Bolo takes a stone and uses Way to light it, holding it up so the others can see the area. Turtle sniffs around and keeps watch. Would there have been enough light for all to see there would be no doubt as to the Stranger's demise. Poking around on the ground for a minute Bolo finds a suitable stone and light it in a similar manner to the one Sheldon used to throw up on the porch. Unless a passerby were to approach within a couple of paces, it would be assumed that she was holding an oil lamp. The light is enough to illuminate what is necessary. Sheldon is in a seriously poor condition. He is able to blink his eyes, which are currently open, but he cannot even speak, much less move. Despite all of this, the wound so close to the carotid artery on Sheldon's neck has stopped bleeding, apparently he has augmented his body's own ability to heal despite not being a...

Both Merin and Tor will close the distance, as quickly as possible. Merin will try to slide under the man's defenses, like a runner sliding into home base. He will strike the man in the side of his left knee, hard enough to dislocate or (hopefully) break the joint. At the same time, he will attempt to paralyze The Stranger. Tor will rush The Stranger as well, attempting to knock him down with a shield bash. Simultaneously, he will use Concussion on The Stranger's head, attempting to stun him. Merin and Tor both begin moving at the same time, coordinating their approach despite the speed. It will take them 150 tics or 1 and a half seconds to cover the distance. No action has completed, yet.

Maka will draw his knife, discarding the bow, and attempt to rush the bug, and bowl it over. If he can manage to expose its underside, he will stab it with the knife. Hopefully, the chitin is only one-sided, like a turtle. Maka drops his bow and rushes forward in one smooth motion. Drawing his knife, he strikes low at the beetle hoping to carry the swing through upending the insect. Maka: 11(fury) + 19(lethality) + 20(attack) + 91(d100) = 141 - 10(daze) = 131 Beetle: 2(defensiveness) + 6(defend) + 87(d100) = 95 Damage: 131 - 95 = 36% * 10 = 4 - 8(deflect) = -4: ineffective While Maka is readily able to smack the huge insect, its chitinous covering proves quite impenetrable and the thing rights itself as quickly as it is rolled. Waynan Raven Elk reacts next.
