Chuckling at Lenny and Travis, I nod to Duncan. "Moresby, and I look forward to the pie!" I politely correct. "I understand that you live in Dyvers, I just assumed that you had lands or holdings elsewhere - since I had never heard of you or your troop before - and was curious what you planned to do with them." Feeling the warm energy, I guess that it might be a blessing from Khubsheth to...

About Tellerian Hawke
Introduction:
Die Hard 3.0 / 3.5 Player
About Me:
I started playing D&D during the Thanksgiving holidays of 1979, using other people's books. My parents bought me the AD&D Player's Handbook in Christmas of 1980. Then, I got my first D&D Basic Set (the Tom Moldvay red cover, with Erol Otus artwork) in August of 1981. Ah, humble beginnings, and fond memories. My first DM was my dad, and bless his heart, he had no clue about where to start. Our first adventures were awkward, to say the least.

If you are curious as to the whole story about my D&D origins, I wrote a memoir about it on my blog:
https://overthetopepicroleplaying.wordpress.com/2015/08/23/memoirs-part-one-how-i-started-playing-dungeons-dragons/

1979 was 5th grade for me. By the time I was in 8th grade, I was playing 1st Ed AD&D, which I stuck with all through high school. (I graduated in 1987.)

In the early 90's I switched to Second Edition, and later to 2nd Ed Skills & Powers, and then I even became a play-tester for 3rd Edition, which was an experience that I must say really endeared me to that particular edition of the game.

I have also written a skeletal framework for my own RPG, although it has never gotten to the playtest stage. I might revisit it one day soon, but in the meantime, I have a lot of other irons in the creative fire. I have an unfinished novel to think about, as well as a non-fiction book I'm writing that covers my family's genealogical record.

I'm a librarian by profession; I hold a master's degree in English, and a master's degree in Library Science, which, in librarian-speak, makes me a subject specialist. I'm what's known as a "Humanities Librarian." As such, I also have a list of ideas for academic papers that I plan to write, and since these are peer-reviewed items that concern the betterment of my career, they form one of the principal reasons why my novel and game system are still languishing on the shelf.

My longest running campaign ("The Fearless Five") was from 1999 - 2005, and it ended up going into epic levels. I pretty much quit running it when I got married, because at that point, my life became super-busy because of my transition from bachelor-with-lots-of-free-time, to husband / head of household / homeowner, and shortly thereafter, father-of-two. That's the main reason I never played 3.5; I had purchased all of the core 3.5 books, and some of the supplements, intending to eventually "switch over"; but a whirlwind romance, and subsequent marriage, cut those plans short. Thus, when I quit playing in 2005, despite having the 3.5 books, all of my knowledge and expertise was still grounded in the 3.0 material.

In July of 2014, at a family reunion, two of my cousins (who had been part of the Fearless Five campaign) expressed a desire to play again, albeit via the internet, using Play-By-Post. So, I made a private, Google Site webpage, scanned the bulk of my old notes, house rules, maps, and character sheets into PDF format, and put it all on the web. I am still running the Fearless Five PbP on that site, although I have plans to move it here, to ENWorld, in the very near future. Since the PbP began, I have slowly been adapting my campaign to the 3.5 rules set, although I must say, I don't agree with some of the changes they've made. So I guess you could say that I am running a 3.0 / 3.5 hybrid. (3.25?)

I came to this website because I wanted to refresh my knowledge, and have someplace to discuss my hobby with others. I was on ENWorld way back when, during the Eric Noah era, and during the first years of Morrus' stewardship also. I used to frequent the site, because I loved keeping up with Blackdirge's custom monsters. At any rate, I enjoyed the site back then, and it stayed with me in my memory, so I found it again, and here I am.

The last two things that I can think to tell you about me, with regard to this mutual hobby of ours, is that I am now, and always will be, a die-hard Greyhawker, and that I like to use Lego minifigs as miniatures, because there's no painting involved, and the figures can be readily modified. If you'd like to see what that looks like, click on the link below.

  • 11:53 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Sheldon Interjects
As Merin is finishing his sketch, he approaches Sannit. Merin says, "We should hack some trails into the jungle, to make it easier for the sailors to gather building materials. Those trails will also serve as the beginnings for what will eventually be a road to the next nearest settlement." Tor mentions, "We should also see to building a fence over the next 4-5 days, to give them a defined perimeter to patrol, and to help prevent this position from being easily overrun." In a seemingly uncharacteristic manner, Sheldon catches his two friends' attention when they hope to engage Sannit. "No! Sannit is making sure that there is no immediate threat, but these are men not children. We have not the time to hold their hands and establish their community. Uncle Buliwyf may even find the offer insulting as he has taken it upon himself to lead these men. We have an obligation to return to Southroad Fair and prepare them for the impending arrival of an Ansylin force. Besides, the jungle seems to have containe...

  • 06:53 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 320: Landfall
104086 Upon landing, Merin and Tor check their gear one last time, in preparation for the upcoming trek through the jungle... Before they land on shore, San-Bolo will inspect the ship to make sure none the Seekers gear is left behind... The Seekers find that they have reacquired all of their gear. Once on shore San-Bolo will look for a suitable place to camp. When that chore is done, Bolo will set out for a hunt, not wanting to take any food from the sailors, and wanting something fresh for the fire. Sannit will help scout out the immediate area, looking for any signs of hostile tribes or larger creatures. Sheldon and Indigo will move in a different direction to look for game as well. While they are out, they will also see if any useful herbs, or minerals can be located. At this point, they are no longer concerned if the sailors realize that they have gone hunting without the benefit of a bow. The western side of the river flowing from the jungle produces a considerably different flora than the ...

Maka, realizing that weapons are proving to be inadequate, says, "A warrior is nothing if he is not willing to die in pursuit of his goal!" • 09:32 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post The Missing Items
Tor nods at Buliwyf, "I shall go then, and retrieve the rest of our gear. Merin, you're with me." Without further ado, the pair walk into the superdeck, and enter the Captain's quarters, and begin searching for the rest of their gear. Both will proceed with caution, in case the Captain has left any countermeasures to prevent unauthorized access. Being unfamiliar with shipboard activity and measures, Tor and Merin take extra precaution when entering the simple wooden door, not realizing that it is unnecessary. The Seekers' gear is all stowed in a chest underneath the captain's hammock. There are other things within the chest including a bag of coins and several glass goblets. Various trinkets, obviously collected from travels decorate the walls and a sturdy desk is mounted in the center of the room facing aft. Glass-filled windows cross the forward wall, allowing moderate viewing of the ship's heading. Other than the unexpected bag of coins and the goblets, nothing else appears to be of any real...

  • 09:38 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Pilfered
[Speaking Ansylin]: Tor asks one of the soldiers, "Tell me who has my sword and shield, and where I might find them. I will have them back." Bulywif responds in Ansylin, "I can answer that for you son. All of the gear not counting the weapons kept by the officers was placed in the captain's quarters. He insisted on it before the ship left port. He said it was due payment for having to sail near The Maelstrom." It suddenly occurs to Merin that it's been more than a day since the fight; he discreetly checks his belt pouch, to see if the Phoenix Feather has yet reformed. Merin, as well as everyone else, notices that his belt and any other pouches are missing. Everything other than clothing was evidently confiscated. The party needs to determine if the quartermaster can be trusted to remain at the helm and pilot the ship. If the crew can manage the ship without assistance. Where landfall might be considered, etc.

  • 06:40 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 305: Commandeering the Vessel
[Speaking Ansylin]: Tor steps forward and says, "Good... What say you?" [Speaking Ansylin]: Merin nods in agreement, adding, "If you choose not to serve us, but agree not to resist, we will set you free when we reach landfall..." The crew and the remaining soldiers all stare in silence. None seems able to formulate words or find his voice. This being the first real opportunity to notice, it appears all the crew and soldiers are male. Tor does not see his sword and shield. Sannit walks to the one that has his spear, keeping eye contact with him and takes it, inspecting it to make sure no damage was done. Sannit says to the crew in Ansylin, "My friends are more diplomatic than I am right now. As you can tell my rage is lethal, and no one will take my freedom from my mate and me again." The Master-at-Arms sneers as Sannit retrieves his lanzita, but he does not try to resist. Still unable to move fluidly, he picks himself up from the deck staring back at it like he is looking for what caused him to t...

  • 06:26 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 261: Aligning the Images
Maka approaches one of the images that Vittero said might be near The Outpost. Testing a theory, he reaches out to touch the wall... Maka steps up to the image on the forward wall and places his right hand upon the image. To his utter disappointment, nothing happens. He feels the solid stone. Reflexively he pushes on the wall, exhaling in a sigh. While Maka is leaning against the forward wall, Vittero says, "I have an idea. West." An image identical to the forward wall returns to the previously blank right wall. A pattern of illumination chases across the pattern on the floor. Vittero follows the pattern up to the right wall but does not touch it. Maka switches hands to touch the forward wall with his left, reflexively still wanting to maintain contact with the forward wall, as he turns to watch Vittero. "Outpost." The image upon the left wall is replaced with an identical image of the other two walls. Maka, who is still leaning against the wall with his left hand, falls through the wall. Vittero fo...

  • 09:54 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 305: Mutiny
Sannit intends to look over the deck. If there are any quick weapons at hand, he will grab one. If there are any threats he will engage. If there is no one between Sannit and the man Sheldon rendered unconscious Sannit intends to run to that man, grab him and toss him overboard. Sannit gains his footing on the main deck, facing aft to the quartermaster's station and the location of the felled man, who was indeed the captain, for the quartermaster calls for the master-at-arms as soon as the captain fell. The master-at-arms happened to be on the forward deck at that moment and is much farther away than Sannit. As Sannit glances over his shoulder at the call, he can see that the master-at-arms has commandeered his spear. The quartermaster cannot simply release the wheel, and there is no interference between Sannit and his goal. Even with his enhanced strength, the captain is heavier than the grate, causing Sannit to strain as he drags the man to the side rail and heaves him over. The feat of strength...
  • 04:56 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 261: Dabbling in the Pool
Taylar moves his baton down off his shoulder and watches the changing walls as he replies to Raven Elk. "I don't want to talk, I want to find a good fight. ...." Disappointingly, nothing changes as Taylar speaks. The three separate images remain the same. In the tree scene, a pair of squirrels begin to chase one a another around a tree. Maka watches intently, and then says, "What... North..? The image on the left wall changes but appears almost the same. Everyone notices that a pattern on the floor illuminates as well. The pattern displays once then extinguishes. The image on the wall looks almost the same as before. The trees are about the same, but there are no visible standing stones. The lay of the land inclines differently, too. "What... East? The image of the ocean appears on the forward wall. A different pattern chases across the floor. Having never seen the ocean, there is no way for anyone to recognize where they might be seeing. "What... West? The image upon the right wall become the im...

  • 04:56 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Merin and Tor on Deck
Merin and Tor will both augment their strength, in order to increase the distance of their standing high jump. As soon as Indigo is out of the hatch, Merin and Tor will follow suit, leaping up through the hatch, rolling to their feet as Indigo did, and scanning for opponents. Tor intends to knock down the nearest guard and disarm him; Merin intends to paralyze whichever guard would be closest and/or most advantageous. Tor Roll: 77; Merin Roll: 66. • 06:32 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Merin and Tor
Merin nods at Bolo, "19 of them? So be it. I doubt more than half of that number actually know how to fight. Most of them are probably simple sailors, who will follow the orders of anyone who asserts himself into the position of command." Bulywif gestures at Merin and speaks in Centrin even though Merin spoke in Ansylin. "Slow down there, nephew. Five officers. Five soldiers. Ten prisoners, including me, but not counting all of you." Tor nods, "I'd be willing to bet that the officers are all above-deck, running the ship, along with the actual sailors. And I'd bet Clams-To-Pine-Vine that the enlisted soldiers are below-deck somewhere, either on guard duty, or assigned to other tasks... Bulywif interrupts his son. "The cook will be below deck, along with the mess hands. The captain and quartermaster will be at the helm. The master-at-arms and first mate will walk the deck with the other soldiers, making sure all the prisoners are at their assigned tasks. I am the oldest prisoner, which is probably why...

  • 09:37 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Tor and His Father
Tor cannot believe his eyes! “Father.” he whispers, excitedly. ”They told me that you were dead, no doubt to goad me and the other Seekers into rash action, in order to trap us. Is your collar cursed?... 103603 Bulywif Ericsson rubs his right eye while holding his left in a gesture of halt. "Slow down, son! One question at a time. That first one will take some time." He takes a deep breath and coughs, not from any specific illness but malnutrition. "Seekers? Oh, I guess that is what you all are calling yourselves. You all have changed much. I did not recognize the rest of you, but I think my eyesight is failing, too." "It was a matter of chance that I am still alive, though I have had many days to wish otherwise stuck on this ship. Had had been drinking that watered swill they make from the Centrin Ale and needed to unload some of it. The tavern was indeed a bit rowdy that night. While I was relieving myself in the alley an explosion shook the tavern from inside. I was knocked from my feet." "The ...

  • 04:47 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Merin and Tor Wake to the Situation
Merin opens his eyes groggily, and looks around... Merin claps Sannit warmly on the shoulder (and speaks in the common Ansylin), "My friends, I am glad to see that you are still alive. From the looks of things, the Magisters are carrying out their threat? I assume we're on a one-way voyage to wherever this 'Maelstrom' thing is?" Sheldon gestures for Merin to speak more quietly as the Norikadian stranger says, "One more day." ... While they are talking, Tor comes to consciousness as well. The process of greetings and information sharing is repeated. Tor adds, "Let us see to Indigo and Vadin. They appear to still be out. How is everyone? Does anyone require assistance for injuries?" The question is instinctive among friends, but only Indigo was physically injured and in the interim of two days previous travel, her wounds have healed. She blinks her eyes and sits up. "Torvald?" The quiet questioning mention of his name sends an intense chill down Tor's spine. He stands from his kneeling position ...
