Counterspell was not in the OP list because it was taken in the 1st Magical Secrets; same thing for cantrips (not in the OP list). "sword bard spell list" I don't have XGE, is there such a thing? If you have access to an electronic version of it, could you paste it (the sword bard spell list)? I compile different sites to make my sword bard, there could be some info that are on none of them.

About WilliamCQ
Introduction:
Introduced to D&D with NWN, 2002 PC game, and to P&P D&D at the end of 4e, I've been playing AL & home-games since. My main language is French / Je suis francophone.
About Me:
I've played some 4e, a bit of Next and > 100 games of 5e. I've never played P&P 3.0e neither 3.5e but since Neverwinter Nights (NWN; 2002 PC game developed by BioWare) & NWN2 are based correspondingly on these, I feel I have experience in them, at least I know many rules about them.

  • 10:49 PM - Blue mentioned WilliamCQ in post Chill Touch can be twinned?
First, I'm with the majority ruling here that it should work. Second, I think WilliamCQ handled it maturely - bring it up, but don't derail the table with it. It can always be discussed after the session. That said, I see at least one post ascribing negative motivations to the DM for saying no. That's not particularly cool. Perhaps the DM is reading the spell that it doesn't target anything, it summons a hand in the space of anotehr creature and then the Hand targets them. Or some other rules permutation that I haven't thought of. Please folks, don't assume the DM is making the call out of malice or sheer stupidity. We don't have a lot of information, it's just not cool. (And please don't argue that the case I brought up is wrong - I've already said I wouldn't rule that way, it was just one example of how a DM could look at it quickly during a session and make a calling.)

I wanted to know general suggestions 1st. Now perhaps there would be different ones letting you know of the class of the PC: sword bard (XGE). Hmm. Let me think about that for a moment. ... ... ... Nope, my answer remains the same. The answer is: The two that help you best portray whatever character you're envisioning. Pick those. See, just telling me "Sword Bard" is still too vague. I can imagine all kinds of Sword Bard characters. And each of these might have completely different spells that help best represent them. Since you're not telling me anything about your character (your class is only 1 aspect of your character) I can't narrow the spell choices down for you.

I wanted to know general suggestions 1st. Now perhaps there would be different ones letting you know of the class of the PC: sword bard (XGE). Then favor spells which are not on the sword bard spell list. As Gyor pointed out, Find Familiar and Find Steed have major utility, not just on the day you cast them. On another hand, you don't get any utility out of anything if you're dead, and two great spells for avoiding death are Shield and Absorb Elements.

  • 08:21 PM - FrogReaver quoted WilliamCQ in post ASI suggestion for sword & board ftr
sword & board ftr w/ Str 20, Dex & Con 16, Resilient: dexterity, Shield Master, Lucky, Heavy Armor Master, ASI suggestion? Mobile is fun with shield master. Knock them prone attack and then move away and the can’t hit you are anyone else back. Alert is highly effective. Going first can feel like getting a whole extra turn. Out of combat is suggest ritual caster. It offers so much.

  • 07:36 PM - Saelorn quoted WilliamCQ in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
The answers to my question has to be RAW; if your post must contain non-RAW material please make it explicit it does. I have a druid with some spare TP (treasure points) and some session back he unlocked a Manual of Quickness of Action. He has 14 Dex and has been donning a hide armor. It sounds like you aren't looking for RAW, but AL-legal. RAW and RAI, this matter is entirely up the DM's discretion. There is no one, true answer which is RAW at all tables. It's supposed to vary between tables. As far as the AL is concerned, I don't believe they've addressed this particular question yet, which means it's still up to each individual DM. My best guess is that, if you invest the resources and get it past the first DM, then subsequent DMs will just go with it. That's just a guess, though. Druids are supposed to wear hide armor, and they're supposed to keep their Dexterity below 16. Whenever you stray from those assumptions, you risk something going wrong. Continue forward at your own discr...
  • 10:15 AM - Kurotowa quoted WilliamCQ in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
(asking a gm amount to asking an opinion as s/he could be wrong (and are only required to enforce their best knowledge of RAW), as gms keep changing and its the player responsibility for his/her sheet to be "RAW-compatible") A DM is never wrong. Sometimes they make house rules without intended to, but never wrong. The rules of the table are what they say the rules are. Which is not to say they can't be swayed by bringing their attention to a subsection of the printed rules they might be unfamiliar with, but it's not like that binds them. So. The restriction on "metal armor" is vague and not mechanically defined. What counts as metal armor at your table is what your DM says it does. Our opinions are those of random strangers and not to be taken as sufficient weight for you to take as rules clarifications in place of your DM's word. Personally I don't think Studded Leather counts, but then again Studded Leather is entirely an invention of D&D with no historical basis, so really anything goes...

  • 08:08 PM - BookBarbarian quoted WilliamCQ in post Polearm Champion fighter 3 remaining ASI?
I thought I was clear in my last post if you also read the quote just before. You can reread the OP 2nd sentence while keeping in mind these are picks,--not--considerations; to be extra clear it was picked when I wrote that sentence. I will not address this issue again. Ah, I was not getting your meaning. When your wrote "The feat was already pick" I thought you meant Resilient (Wis) not Resilient (Dex).
  • 06:23 PM - BookBarbarian quoted WilliamCQ in post Polearm Champion fighter 3 remaining ASI?
The feat was already pick, hence why I mentioned it in the OP; otherwise I would have mentioned something like: I'm thinking of getting Resilient Dex. If you already have Resilient (Wis) you cannot take Resilient (Dex). You cannot take the same feat (Resilient) twice unless it's specified in the feat text, which Resilient does not.
  • 06:19 PM - Yunru quoted WilliamCQ in post Polearm Champion fighter 3 remaining ASI?
I've been thinking about that feat since soon after my 2nd post (in this thread). Even though PAM is that PC main thing, nothing prevent me from picking a 5' reach weapon (especially 2-handed). Nothing's stopping you from simply using an Unarmed Strike, either.

I know someone with a 3D printer, but is not a friend thus I don't want to ask the person. Do you happen to know if there's somewhat cheap 3D printing non-commercial services in large cities? I guess they would only rent the time and I'd have to provide my own material. As I wouldn't have a large or continuous use of a 3D printer, I'd likely end up paying more if I purchased one, and of course maintained it. I don't know about Canada, but there are several folks that do that around me. I have access to a lot of 3d printers through libraries and the university too. Many public libraries around me have maker spaces where you can print stuff. You might also post something on a 3d printer forum or reddit - that's just a guess on my part - I have no idea how active the 3d printing community is on those types of things. Good luck!

  • 06:49 AM - Horwath quoted WilliamCQ in post Last ASI for ranged fighter
I'm to pick a last ASI for my ranged fighter, do you have a suggestion? The PC got dex 20, con 16, resilient dex, SS, Xbow xpert, Elven Accuracy. Thank you by having these two feats on the same character you are admiting that as an elf you are using crossbow. An ultimate disgrace for elven race. For penance you must wash yourself in the blood of a dozen drows. Killed by a longbow. Unless you are a drow(disgrace by itself), then you are ok with this character development and I would suggest Drow high magic or Stealthy feat if UA is allowed for you.

  • 07:26 PM - Prakriti quoted WilliamCQ in post Chill Touch can be twinned?
why can't the magic that allow those special castings can just make 2 hands for that casting? Or hit 2 people with 1 slap. Moe did it all the time to Larry and Curly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eaX9QmmfWE
  • 08:35 AM - Nevvur quoted WilliamCQ in post Chill Touch can be twinned?
Some hours ago a GM told me I couldn't twin (Sorcerer feature Metamagic option Twinned Spell) Chill Touch as a hand need to grab ; I didn't contradict but my argument would have been: why can't the magic that allow those special castings can just make 2 hands for that casting? Thank you kindly The DM was wrong. It was nice of you not to make a fuss at the table, but there's a difference between simply pointing out an incorrect ruling and bringing the game to crashing halt to argue about it for more than half a minute. While the argument you suggest is valid in a way, "because magic" could be used to justify almost anything. You'd be better served having the relevant text at hand and citing it. Worst case scenario, the DM likes to make spontaneous house rules to shut down his players. More likely, he just didn't understand the rules and you missed an opportunity to improve his system mastery. Don't hesitate to speak up when the DM makes an incorrect call, just try not to be a douchebag about ...

  • 06:51 AM - pming quoted WilliamCQ in post Distract drop invisibility?
Hiya! TL:DR...so this will be very short. Does distracting, as in for the help action, drop invisibility (from the distracter) ? Reminder the spell mention and AL is RAW. I've learned to develop a "players intention" lens when DM'ing. What is the PLAYERS intention for doing something? If it's "because it seems cool" or "because the PC would do/not do this"...then I'm more lenient. If it's "because it's a loophole I can use to win/game-the-system/cheat"...then I bring down the Adamantine Hammer +5 of Shenanigan Slaying. Believe it or not, it was that actual spell (Invisibility) that made me first start to do this waaaaay back in 1e days (probably around 1985 or so...I was still a neophyte DM with not even a half-dozen years under my belt at that time). In 5e, I take the same approach. "You're opening the door for him so he can enter all spooky like? Ok. You stay invisible"... vs ..."You're opening the door for him so he can blast them with chain lightning? Ok. You're visible"....

  • 01:03 AM - Bacon Bits quoted WilliamCQ in post Distract drop invisibility?
Does distracting, as in for the help action, drop invisibility (from the distracter)? That depends entirely on what you say your character is actually doing with the Help action. It's much easier to distract someone when they can see you, so a lot of the normal choices just won't work. You can't feint an attack or pretend you're doing something really threatening. Is he making a lot of noise similar to what minor illusion creates? That might not even work and might not count as the Help action at all. Are you opening your purse and emptying it on the ground? If the creature is greedy, gold appearing from nowhere might distract him! Are you using your staff to try to trip the creature, or grabbing at him, or pushing at him? That could be an attack. How exactly was your character trying to distract the opponent? If you just say, "I use the Help action," then the DM is pretty free to interpret Help as he chooses. If his interpretation is that your character does something that makes...

nature cleric to get last ASI, it has Wis 20, Con 18, Resilient: constitution & War Caster, suggestion? yes. do something fun and flavorful. You have passed the test. You survived! You seem to be very survivable... I doubt opitimization is much of an issue any longer. I would go with something that simply sounds cool. Barring that, you could get more hit points with con to 20 or toughness. Then you are a juggernaut.

  • 09:51 AM - CapnZapp quoted WilliamCQ in post RAW: Spell attack rolls modifiers stack?
AFAIK a thread is made on the basis that it will be centered on the title and the OP. You may create a thread with the same name w/o the prepending RAW. Oh so very much this. Alas, that's not how it works in practice. Consider yourself lucky you learned this lesson only 41 posts in. That is the worst aspect of this site. How there is absolutely zero moderation of posts that attack or derail the topic under discussion. I wholeheartedly agree with WilliamCQ and believe the atmosphere here would have been much much less cantankerous if we had to actually discuss under the premises stated by the OP (or start a new thread obviously).

  • 06:53 PM - Bacon Bits quoted WilliamCQ in post RAW: Spell attack rolls modifiers stack?
Do spell attack rolls modifiers stack (ie: dual-weilding Rod of the Pact Keeper & Staff of Power) ? It's important for answers to be Rules as Written (RAW). RAW, the bonus stacks. A Warlock could conceivably have any combination of a +3 Rod of the Pact Keeper, a +3 Wand of the War Mage, a Staff of Magi or a Staff of Power all attuned. Whether or not you can "hold" a Staff, a Wand, and a Rod at the same time is left up to the DM, but you could conceivably have +8 to spell attack rolls. Remember, of course, that you can't attune two items with the same name (DMG p138) so you need to find different items that grant the same bonus. That said, I can imagine that many DMs would not allow these items to stack.
