Surprised/not surprised. :p I guessed a few dozen (in the 40 - 60 range). Does this count short story anthologies, cuz technically they're not novels. I've read more than 10, less than 20 (just a guess), but the only ones I enjoyed were the original 6 (Chronicles & Legends) by Weiss & Hickman. The Elven Nations trilogy was merely OK. My wife claims the Meetings Sextet is good, but I have...

I'd like to run a bronze age Mediterranean campaign, one that mixes in Mesopotamia, Egypt and Babylon. You know, as true to the Bronze Age Mediterranean world as vanilla D&D is to Medieval Europe. An Age of Sail campaign would be cool too - my son really wants me to run a pirate themed campaign. Gamma World for 5e would be a blast too.

While there is a lot of sound advice above, have you considered multiclassing? For what you describe, a couple levels of Fighter or Rogue would really round out the character. Looking at the MC Proficiencies (pg 164 PHB) you don't really lose much by taking either of those classes second - the Rogue loses access to some weapons if not the first class taken. Ideally, you'll eventually want to...

I see this as an asset. I've already come down on the 'roll your own' side. No trope/expectations means what he creates will be his own and original. Keep the choices simple - just because it is an option in the PHB, doesn't mean you have to tell him about it. If it were me, I would just default to human unless he has strong feelings in another direction. Let him discover the other races through...

Ok, I'll admit I didn't read all that, but I think I got the basics. You want to teach a 10 year old D&D. Great, do it! I started my kids at age 6 & 11 (4 years ago), and their friends, and here are a few of the things I learned: - I get the pre-gen argument, but kids will get attached to a character of their own making a lot quicker. My kids enjoyed all the decision making and it made the...

Just kinda thinking out loud here... An idea for the INT fighter could be a series of 'probing attacks' to gauge the strength and ability of your opponent. On a successful attack, forgo doing damage in exchange for information about the opponent (HP, Saving Throw modifiers, or the like). Alternately, the 'probing attack' could be used to increase your damage on the next successful hit. This...

I would agree with this statement, though I don't know that I speak for all Canadians. If a product is OK, just OK, it will get a 3/5. A good product will get 4/5. I'll give a 5 if something really wow's me - the product is better than anticipated or does stuff I did not expect it to do. It doesn't have to be a long term thing. I just have to be really impressed in the first few days.

There are only 8 days remaining, and my spreadsheet predicts that Mistwell will win by less than $10k. At $9,264,399 the "Legend of Vox Machina Animated Series" Kickstarter has replaced "The World's Best Travel Jacket" as the 6th highest-funded project in Kickstarter history. • 08:33 PM - DM Dave1 mentioned akr71 in post Archetypes
As stated above, taking the Rogue Thief archtype describes what you want perfectly. At level 1 take Expertise with Thieves Tools (for unlocking locks, disarming traps) and Investigation (for finding traps and figuring out how they work). The Fast Hands 3rd level ability allows you to use disarm a trap or open a lock as a Bonus Action. Your alignment preference doesn't even factor into the equation. Or pick up Xanathar's Guide to Everything and choose the Inquisitive archtype. At level 9 you get Advantage on those Investigation checks (hopefully still with Expertise). What akr71 said. Plus take the Guild Artisan background as a locksmith. Pick Tinker's tools to go along with your Thieves' Tools. Maybe later, take a multiclass dip into Wizard just to learn Knock and Arcane Lock. In the end, though, it's not up to the books to make your concept work. It's up to you to make it work. Any 5e DM should be on board - 5e is as flexible as you and your DM want it to be. Remember 5e's basic premise: have fun!

  • 02:06 PM - OB1 mentioned akr71 in post Kids playing dnd?
The advice from akr71 is spot on with my experience over the last year. I started my nieces and nephews ages 7, 9, 11, and 13 with the starter set last Christmas and we continued throughout the year and are getting ready for our second adventure. My wife and I helped them create their characters, Druid, Bard, Cleric and Fighter and as I DM'd she would help them (especially the younger ones) with what they could do while playing along side them as a Paladin who could take the brunt of my attacks if they got into trouble. When the youngest wanted to play Luke Skywalker, it was simply yes, and we created a champion fighter for him named Luke Skywalker, described his longsword as a laser sword, and went on. The pure excitement in his voice every time he would roll a critical 19 and yell "nat 20!" was amazing. For the next campaign that my wife is running (they asked for a Wild West theme) he asked to be Spider Man, so we've made him a Tabaxi Sun Soul Monk who's blasts we will describe as web slingers. ...

They're overused at this point. Not that undead was much better, but at least there are undead creatures that aren't vampires and zombies to use. Well, as someone who consistently downvoted dragons, I understand your point. That said- Dragons are like the Citizen Kane of D&D monsters at this point. They are so copied, so overused, so spread in popular consciousness that it's hard to see them for the ways in which they are novel and amazing. I mean, even things like the codification of metallic and chromatic dragons, so basic to D&D lore (and borrowed and altered from earlier sources) is pretty amazing, if you think about it. So, I can fully respect Dragons winning. :) PS- Started a new thread. Thought I'd get off the monster kick. And akr71 I haven't forgotten your suggestions; I am trying to think of a good way to do it.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that I will try and post a new survivor thread either later today, or tomorrow. akr71 was nice enough to shoot me some ideas, which I may steal, but since this ended early, and in keeping with the spirit (BOO!) of the season, if someone has another scary/spooky idea, put it in here. Congratulations to the Wraith! I feel .... drained. :)

h/t @akr71 This thread is inspired by the prior threads on the iconic monsters, best cannon fodder, and so on. Most importantly, it was suggested in the past thread and is specially SPOOKY for Halloween 2018! That's right- we are going to find out what Undead, Um, Lives ... this Halloween the old fashioned way- with a Survivor Thread! This is a list of undead from 5e, culled from the sources as described below. IMPORTANT NOTE- DOWNVOTES ARE 3 IN THIS THREAD. REPEAT- DOWNVOTES ARE THREE IN THIS THREAD. Each undead starts with 20 points and you vote for one undead you like which gets 1 point and an undead you dislike which loses 3 points. It is intentional that a negative vote is worth more than a positive vote- first, because we don't want to be here all year. Second, because. Upvotes are in green, downvotes are in in red (unless you are on your phone, and are unable to, in which case please indicate your votes some other way). Aye. Salamandyr and akr71, I'd say exactly the same thing, except that my big homebrew work would be setting up lots of mechanics to reward worshipping and praying to the gods rather than a magical pole. Instead, I turned my effort to (occasionally) making up magic items, because the players will use them.

akr71: Yes, Glazhael (aka "Cloudchaser") is the dragon encountered in the bowels of Skyreach Castle. In my game, he got away, as did Talis, so I had them team up. When we started RoT, I decided to begin with Varram's chapter. I had Talis contact the PCs via sending to give them Varram's whereabouts. They were teleported to Boareskyr Bridge and followed the clues to the tomb. Talis and the dragon were waiting, but once again they were no match for the PCs. On a different note: I am facing a big info dump for my next session, and I'm not entirely sure what to do about it. I'm going to be running the first session of the Council of Waterdeep to start with, so that, along with the draakhorn, is a lot of info for me to just dump in the PCs' laps with minimal interaction on the players' parts. I've also decided to expand on the lead-in to Episode 2 by not having Dala Silmerhelve know everything. Instead, she just knows that Maccath the Crimson knows a lot about the draakhorn. The Council will t...

  • 02:41 PM - Blue quoted akr71 in post Fighter subclasses for every ability score
This could be achieved by a flat modifier (boring), rolling the damage more than once and taking the higher number, or automatically giving max damage. I'm a little wary of "don't do anything now to do something later". Probing with your attack to get information = good. Giving up the damage you'd do = not so much. Especially as most 5e combats aren't that long that most of the time it's better just to try to inflict "condition: Dead" on the opponent. The "no damage now for double later" is "you'll have two attacks worth of damage total. do ti normal and it's half now. Do it special and it's n...

You could also get them back on track by having the castle still crash. Either forces on the castle try to take over, or Blagothkus realizes the error of his ways (supporting the dragons) and crashes it intentionally - he is the only one who can control the castle after all. Boom. You are right back at the beginning of Rise of Tiamat. It never sat well with me that a giant - sworn enemies of dragons - is helping Tiamat's cause. I changed Blagothkus's character and motivations a lot when I ran it. Me too - I had it so that his wife's spirit was being held hostage by the cultists so he had to do their bidding under duress. The PCs had to defeat the cultists (and an Ice Devil) to rescue her and win Blagothkus's trust. That was a fun encounter.

It is a lot of $ for a plushie. I find it hard to believe that anyone is backing at this level just to get the plushie, but who knows. Stuffed animals = clutter to me. Personally, I would rather that the 17% cut of the pie needed to support the backer rewards were instead put into the film. But it could be that the rewards help make more money overall. Backer rewards are important in a many Kickstarters, but I'm not sure how necessary they are in this one. More of an eye opener is the cut that Kickstarter itself and the credit card processors are taking. I have not looked closely at Kickstarter, but is it a flat percentage regardless of amount funded or does the percentage go down with higher funding levels? Almost a million of this is going to just to use Kickstarter and process payments.
  • 06:50 PM - Harzel quoted akr71 in post Critical Role Kickstarter Predition Game: Guess the Funding Outcome (GTFO)
^ yes, all KS backers get priority access to the animated series, but it will be available to all eventually. I pledged $3 to get the priority access - none of the swag was particularly attractive to me, but I do want to see it as soon as possible. I messaged them thru the KS and they responded in the affirmative to that. Most of us are just supporting it so that it gets made. Priority access is nice. I personally do not care about the swag and am glad they they have not tried to keep adding various physical rewards. I want them focused on making the best show that they can and don't want them distracted by the logistics of baker rewards. How can you not want a Trinket plushie????? :)

  • 05:00 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted akr71 in post How do YOU handle a Fastball Special, and other team manuevers?
A few thoughts: If there are no obstacles between you, your teammate, and the target, the throw can largely be flavor. If you are being "thrown," then just use your movement speed and describe yourself as being thrown. Now, I know the fastball special well. And in the comics, while I think Colossus provides a lot of the power, Wolverine is timing his jump off Colossus as well to maximize the distance. So if there was an obstacle, such as a chasm to leap over or a higher platform, I think I would just either A) Allow the person being thrown to double their normal long jump distance with a running start (even if they technically didn't get a running start; I would also allow this distance to be included as height too, so long as the toss wasn't just straight up), or B) Allow the person being thrown to be considered as if they are making a long jump with a running start, and add the thrower's strength score. Also, because we are talking heroes (at least, in my games the players are more pow...

  • 03:05 PM - Traycor quoted akr71 in post D&D storylines for a movie?
I agree, wholeheartedly. These 3 seem to be the logical choices. I would save the DL for a bit - roll out 1 movie and see how it does. If it does well, then shoot for the moon and do the DL series. The Drizzt books also have a big following which would help, but who owns the rights to those characters? Salvatore or WotC? That leads me to Baldur's Gate - you could do a one-off movie, touch on some Realms lore and get out without too much problems. A while back, they wanted a tone like Guardians of the Galaxy for an ensemble movie, and it sounded like brand new characters/story set in the Forgotten Realms with the possibility of bringing in other D&D properties/worlds in future films. Since that time, a new writer has reworked the script and the old director is gone, so it could be anything at this point from a book adaptation to a new story to whatever else you can think of.

Good point. Though, if Riverwind was a barbarian, he'd probably still be first level! As I recall, barbarians had insane XP requirements. Keep in mind that in AD&D, wizards needed more XP to level up than other classes.

  • 04:18 AM - dnd4vr quoted akr71 in post Can Sharpshooter be used with a Net?
I would say, if you really wanted a net that did damage, modify one with barbed hooks. Maybe 1 point of piercing damage per hook that catches the target? This would also mean you don't have to take the -5 on your to hit roll. Now the question is how many hooks catch into the target. The issue with that is now since this modified net does 1 piercing, you could add +10 from SS and up to 10d6 from Sneak Attack. It is basically a work-around, and if that is what is needed you might as well just leave the net at 0 damage and allow features to add the damage anyway. There is the issue with the damage type, but I would probably rule it as bludgeoning if I had to. Though this entire thought experiment brings me to conclude that the net shouldn't have a normal attack roll at all, but should be a Dex Save on the target. I have a hard time believing that a person with low Dex in plate armor is harder to catch than a moderately dexterous opponent in light armor. Perhaps the wielder should make a ...

  • 12:28 AM - Hussar quoted akr71 in post Critical Role's Kickstarter Breaks $1,000,000 In About An Hour!
Every other article, tweet or mention talks about this being a TV & Film Kickstarter, but this article goes to great lengths to try and paint it as a TTRPG Kickstarter, which it is not. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I also think comparing a Kickstarter's success to an industry's revenue is a bad idea. I view a Kickstarter as an attempt to raise capital for a venture. The fact that the backers get something at the end other than a stake in the end product is irrelevant. Critical Role is NOT selling a game, they are selling the promise of an animated show. Not really. I'm not sure why you would think that. The issue is that we're looking at a single kickstarter that is worth a significant portion of the entire TTRPG industry. And, remember, Critical Role is a business that sells more than just this single kickstarter. It kinda bemoans the fact that people are willing to spend a considerable amount of money on watching someone play a game, but, aren't really willing to s...

  • 10:31 PM - jmucchiello quoted akr71 in post Critical Role's Kickstarter Breaks $1,000,000 In About An Hour!
Let's not get carried away. The primary audience for this is D&D fans in general and fans of Critical Role, specifically. I mean maybe if they got around to doing an underdark/mind flayer story their audience may have expanded even more, possibly requiring explanation. However, the characters didn't know what they were either, so any explanation can be 'in-story.' I would assume the target for this ultimately is Netflix or Amazon. And I'm saying the in-story explanation would waste a lot of animation time, 3-5 minutes. And while the characters didn't know what they were, Liam and Taliesin knew exactly what they were. And the other players were brought up to speed OOC (and it took more than 3-5 minutes).
