    1. Languages by race. Why does my Tiefling who grew up in a human city automatically know Infernal? I would say Background has more bearing than who your parents are. My in-laws are french, but they raised their daughter (my wife, duh) to speaking english in the home. English is her first language and she doesn't really consider herself bilingual. 2. More language nonsense - bring back max #...

Nope, I'm not thinking about adding that at all. If one of my players asked for a change based on a character concept, I would entertain it. They would have to work with me though. Like you said, a character can't have two 'strong' saves.

LOL! I was going to use karate as an example instead of the 'showing my co-worker the same thing repeatedly.' I've been studying karate for a little more than 2 years and I'm still baffled by the number of people who get to their black belt (sometimes brown) and just ghost. Like that was the goal. No, that's just the beginning - you've now learned enough basics to actually start learning karate!...

That's an interesting idea! To be honest, I was surprised that this wasn't a thing in 5e. I skipped from 1e to 5e, so I don't know when it was taken out.

Some people, even though they do certain tasks every day or nearly every day, do not improve. They don't want to learn, it doesn't stick - whatever. It doesn't matter. I remind co-workers how to do certain things all the time. Your fighter who is no better at Perception checks at level 20 as he was at level 1 is the same way. If he wanted to become better, the player would choose a feat that...

vincegetorix I think your original idea of removing spell slots from the warlock has merit and would be a refreshing twist on the 'caster' It just might need some fine tuning to get it 'play-ready'

Off the top of my head, I would take some of the warlock only spells (Agathys, Hadar, etc) and turn them into 'once per short rest' Invocations. You could do this with a lot of spells really. Would you have these Invocations get more powerful as the warlock advanced in levels (as if casting with a higher slot)?

I've frequently had this problem too. Players rarely (if ever), want to back down, or run away and it usually ends badly. I don't have a solution to this except hopefully, in time, they learn that if something seems unwinnable, it likely is. If I were in your shoes, I'd ask the players what they want. New adventure or keep going? We had fun with a lot of it, but it did drag on in parts (the...

I had to place a number of healing potions for the characters to find in the first 3 chapters. I also had a few NPCs available for help in certain situations because my group was only 3 people and that felt like certain death at points. If you don't have time for a lot of prep, I would certainly consider something different. HotDQ & RoT took A LOT of prep and tweaking. My group is having a...

Yep, its amazing how many Fighters/Rangers/Paladins there were walking around with 18/00 Strength. ;) We typically did about 4 to 6 arrays of stats and chose the one we liked. Once Unearthed Arcana was published we switched to the quick build system there. I may have even had the Dragon magazine it was first published in. Choose the class and then roll different # of d6's for the ability...

I agree - too fast. My players like to play something new every time and rarely use the same class twice. Throwing new abilities at them every 2 or 3 sessions would mean they wouldn't fully grasp how to use them, or when to use them.

Yes, movement can be split up during your turn, however you like. Pg 78. PHB The monk's Martial Arts already allows an unarmed strike as a bonus action. So immediately after the monk Attacks, spend 1 ki point to use your bonus action to make 2 unarmed strikes, rather than the usual 1 unarmed strike as a bonus action.

Why would WotC have to hire Dreamscarred Press? If Dreamscarred Press thought it was a worthwhile project they could undertake it themselves, however, browsing their website, supporting 5e doesn't seem to be their thing.

Surprised/not surprised. :p I guessed a few dozen (in the 40 - 60 range). Does this count short story anthologies, cuz technically they're not novels. I've read more than 10, less than 20 (just a guess), but the only ones I enjoyed were the original 6 (Chronicles & Legends) by Weiss & Hickman. The Elven Nations trilogy was merely OK. My wife claims the Meetings Sextet is good, but I have...

There are only 8 days remaining, and my spreadsheet predicts that Mistwell will win by less than $10k. At $9,264,399 the "Legend of Vox Machina Animated Series" Kickstarter has replaced "The World's Best Travel Jacket" as the 6th highest-funded project in Kickstarter history. • 08:33 PM - DM Dave1 mentioned akr71 in post Archetypes
As stated above, taking the Rogue Thief archtype describes what you want perfectly. At level 1 take Expertise with Thieves Tools (for unlocking locks, disarming traps) and Investigation (for finding traps and figuring out how they work). The Fast Hands 3rd level ability allows you to use disarm a trap or open a lock as a Bonus Action. Your alignment preference doesn't even factor into the equation. Or pick up Xanathar's Guide to Everything and choose the Inquisitive archtype. At level 9 you get Advantage on those Investigation checks (hopefully still with Expertise). What akr71 said. Plus take the Guild Artisan background as a locksmith. Pick Tinker's tools to go along with your Thieves' Tools. Maybe later, take a multiclass dip into Wizard just to learn Knock and Arcane Lock. In the end, though, it's not up to the books to make your concept work. It's up to you to make it work. Any 5e DM should be on board - 5e is as flexible as you and your DM want it to be. Remember 5e's basic premise: have fun!

  • 02:06 PM - OB1 mentioned akr71 in post Kids playing dnd?
The advice from akr71 is spot on with my experience over the last year. I started my nieces and nephews ages 7, 9, 11, and 13 with the starter set last Christmas and we continued throughout the year and are getting ready for our second adventure. My wife and I helped them create their characters, Druid, Bard, Cleric and Fighter and as I DM'd she would help them (especially the younger ones) with what they could do while playing along side them as a Paladin who could take the brunt of my attacks if they got into trouble. When the youngest wanted to play Luke Skywalker, it was simply yes, and we created a champion fighter for him named Luke Skywalker, described his longsword as a laser sword, and went on. The pure excitement in his voice every time he would roll a critical 19 and yell "nat 20!" was amazing. For the next campaign that my wife is running (they asked for a Wild West theme) he asked to be Spider Man, so we've made him a Tabaxi Sun Soul Monk who's blasts we will describe as web slingers. ...

  • 02:32 PM - lowkey13 mentioned akr71 in post Survivor Monster Types- DRAGON WINS!
They're overused at this point. Not that undead was much better, but at least there are undead creatures that aren't vampires and zombies to use. Well, as someone who consistently downvoted dragons, I understand your point. That said- Dragons are like the Citizen Kane of D&D monsters at this point. They are so copied, so overused, so spread in popular consciousness that it's hard to see them for the ways in which they are novel and amazing. I mean, even things like the codification of metallic and chromatic dragons, so basic to D&D lore (and borrowed and altered from earlier sources) is pretty amazing, if you think about it. So, I can fully respect Dragons winning. :) PS- Started a new thread. Thought I'd get off the monster kick. And akr71 I haven't forgotten your suggestions; I am trying to think of a good way to do it.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that I will try and post a new survivor thread either later today, or tomorrow. akr71 was nice enough to shoot me some ideas, which I may steal, but since this ended early, and in keeping with the spirit (BOO!) of the season, if someone has another scary/spooky idea, put it in here. Congratulations to the Wraith! I feel .... drained. :)

h/t @akr71 This thread is inspired by the prior threads on the iconic monsters, best cannon fodder, and so on. Most importantly, it was suggested in the past thread and is specially SPOOKY for Halloween 2018! That's right- we are going to find out what Undead, Um, Lives ... this Halloween the old fashioned way- with a Survivor Thread! This is a list of undead from 5e, culled from the sources as described below. IMPORTANT NOTE- DOWNVOTES ARE 3 IN THIS THREAD. REPEAT- DOWNVOTES ARE THREE IN THIS THREAD. Each undead starts with 20 points and you vote for one undead you like which gets 1 point and an undead you dislike which loses 3 points. It is intentional that a negative vote is worth more than a positive vote- first, because we don't want to be here all year. Second, because. Upvotes are in green, downvotes are in in red (unless you are on your phone, and are unable to, in which case please indicate your votes some other way). Aye. Salamandyr and akr71, I'd say exactly the same thing, except that my big homebrew work would be setting up lots of mechanics to reward worshipping and praying to the gods rather than a magical pole. Instead, I turned my effort to (occasionally) making up magic items, because the players will use them.

akr71: Yes, Glazhael (aka "Cloudchaser") is the dragon encountered in the bowels of Skyreach Castle. In my game, he got away, as did Talis, so I had them team up. When we started RoT, I decided to begin with Varram's chapter. I had Talis contact the PCs via sending to give them Varram's whereabouts. They were teleported to Boareskyr Bridge and followed the clues to the tomb. Talis and the dragon were waiting, but once again they were no match for the PCs. On a different note: I am facing a big info dump for my next session, and I'm not entirely sure what to do about it. I'm going to be running the first session of the Council of Waterdeep to start with, so that, along with the draakhorn, is a lot of info for me to just dump in the PCs' laps with minimal interaction on the players' parts. I've also decided to expand on the lead-in to Episode 2 by not having Dala Silmerhelve know everything. Instead, she just knows that Maccath the Crimson knows a lot about the draakhorn. The Council will t...

Yes, that would be great! Also, how about a new adventure for the Starter Set. LMoP is a greater starter module, but how about move it to the DM's Guild and put a new offering out. How about a variant for D&D specifically designed for 5-10 year olds? Not just maturity of content, but modified to fit the piagetian understanding of those ages. Dramatically simplified rules, maybe replace some of the numbers with pictographs on the character sheet. And extensively playtested to make sure kids that age can get their heads around the mechanics.

and I would argue that if you equip a shield after the spell is cast, your AC is now 18. Maybe. Here's what you do: Figure out what your AC would be sans barkskin. Is it less than 16? Then it is now 16. Is it now 17 or higher? Then it is now 17 or higher. For instance, if you are wearing chain mail and equip a shield, it is now 18. I guess I can understand the confusion vis-a-vis the fiction, but I don't share it. I think it's simple, concisely worded, and intuitive. No matter what, the process is the same: check your AC without it, and if it's less than 16, it's 16 instead.

and I would argue that if you equip a shield after the spell is cast, your AC is now 18. Barkskin does not give you a 16 AC, set at the casting. It just makes it 16 if it would be lower. So there is no "barkskin + shield" calculation that can ever be made because barkskin isn't armor. Just a "armor + dex + shield < 16" calculation to have it overwrite your AC. Same if some monster had a debuff that reduced your DEX by 10 points - it wouldn't come off the barkskin AC, just the original AC to compare.

Is there a reason for this? Is somebody trolling? One of the characters is a tabaxi, so I could have some fun with this, but it seems like a rather ridiculous law.The reference is from the adventure Four From Cormyr, which lists eight laws, including that cats may not be harmed. The idea behind this is the belief that cats are the eyes of the gods, so to harm a cat is to invite bad luck on yourself.

Just bought your 'In the Year of the Nameless One' from DM's Guild. I think its gonna be invaluable as our next campaign starts in Cormyr (gonna see how they do with a sandbox - I think they're ready for it). I'll write a review as such on the DMGuild as soon as I've finished reading.Glad to hear it! Sandbox-style play is what Cormyr In The Year Of The Ageless One is all about. I'm working on a revision and expansion of that product, too, so please plan on having access to a lot more content in a few months. However I have a question - anyone who knows canon, please feel free to answer. On the Forgotten Realms Wiki (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Cormyr) It has a list of 8 laws, number 5 of which is "Harming cats is forbidden." Is there a reason for this? Is somebody trolling? One of the characters is a tabaxi, so I could have some fun with this, but it seems like a rather ridiculous law. I don't think anyone is trolling. We did, but it was almost two years ago, and it was the classic undead. I should run the October, 5e only, undead. Good idea!

  • 04:55 PM - 5ekyu quoted akr71 in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
I stand corrected. I'll admit, I just timed myself reading the same sentence and it came in at a shade over 7 seconds. I still stand by my comment of waiting until my player speaks before committing to any judgement. In fact, the more my players speak, the more time I have to think about my response. I've come to learn that unless I say "The monster charges forward, roll for initiative!" I have no clue what they might do next... and I love it! Edit: Also, I understand what you are getting at. I play in an online game and we have one player who rambles incessantly when trying to describe his actions. As a player I find it frustrating - I can only guess what our DM is thinking.A game I play in is at a FLGS. The noise level in the background is barely at my tolerance level and due to having older ears than my group I have a lot of trouble hearing. It's not uncommon for me to have to ask for repeats - especially when sitting next to one certain player. So I appreciate brevity and concis...
  • 01:33 PM - Nagol quoted akr71 in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
This DM's Brain doesn't get confused and waits until my player finishes speaking his or her complete thought before jumping to conclusions about what the player is trying to say - just like I do in real life. I mean saying that whole phrase takes what? Three seconds? Sure its wordy, but if it helps a player get into their character, fine. I also expect my players to wait for me to finish speaking and not interrupt me. Knee-jerk reactions to half descriptions rarely result in fun gaming. 9 seconds at my typical speech rate. Bandwidth of speech is low and asynchronous. Made worse by protocols that open channels that need future information to complete. Subject-action-object-supporting clauses structure substantially eases verbal as opposed to written communication. Especially when there is a high chance the supporting clauses are unnecessary.

I have the book(s) on my 'to read' pile and plan on getting to them right after I finish The Expanse. I'm planning a sandbox campaign set in Cormyr and we're starting very soon. Any chance you could throw me a bone and tell me the name of the Queen? I'm not a stickler for canon, but sometimes mining canon lore is easier than making it up :D http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Raedra_Obarskyr Queen Raedra Obarskyr.
  • 02:54 PM - Pauper quoted akr71 in post What is the status of Cormyr in 5e?
Any chance you could throw me a bone and tell me the name of the Queen? Queen Raedra. Born in 1460 DR to Irvel Obarskryr (son of King Foril) and Ospra Goldfeather. The book has a partial genealogy of the royal family of Cormyr right at the start, after the dedication, tracing the line of the crown from Azoun IV through Raedra's generation. I call it 'partial' because the families of Cormyr, based on this genealogy, appear very small, so it's likely the chart only shows the 'important' people that get the genealogy from Azoun IV to the time of the story rather than a comprehensive genealogy of all those with Obarskyr blood in Cormyr as of 1486 DR. -- Pauper

As much as I love my Kindle (and yes, you can get a number of Appendix N authors’ works free of charge or very cheaply), there’s something about the smell of a nicely aged 1970s paperback, the feel of the paper. Also, Dune is totally worth reading. If it helps, it’s pretty much fantasy masquerading as sci-fi. We've got a pretty good used bookstore where I live. I had Moorcock & Vance in my hand one day but put them back in favor of Dune (which I still have not read).

Wow, I've heard of many of these authors and have a number of them on my I should read that someday list, but the only one I have actually read anything by is Tolkien. I'm not fit to vote in this one (and I read a lot in my younger days). Quite a few where out of print for quite some time (some for good reason). I think you can find most available digitally now though.

  • 05:36 PM - DM Dave1 quoted akr71 in post Secret hit points?
Oh, I don't tell them how many HP the monster has, I just ask them to tally how much damage they've done to a particular foe. Granted it works better for minions - "My arrow does 8 damage to the orc guarding the cage. It's taken 16 total, is it still standing?" They unofficially track how much damage they deal to bosses anyway, so I may as well let them handle it and make my life easier. Sometimes it makes them sweat that much more, when they've done a pile of damage and the boss just keeps on coming at them :] Ah that makes sense - I currently just have a running tally in my campaign notebook for each foe in the combat. Cross out and jot down the new total right next to it. Hmm... I like your point about making them sweat a bit more when they are tracking the total damage dealt and the big bad is still standing. A little meta-gamey, I suppose, but they're doing it anyway in their heads so the difference is in them now knowing exactly what they've dealt. I might just have to exp...
  • 02:56 PM - DM Dave1 quoted akr71 in post Secret hit points?
As a DM, I have enough to keep track of, thanks. My players would hate this idea too, feeling that I was stealing something integral to their character building from them. I would also say that a character should know how well they are doing - they are the ones taking all the bumps, bruises and fireballs after all. My DM style is moving in the opposite direction. I am actively trying to get me to track less things and my players track more things like monster damage, initiative order. You had me up until monster damage. That needs to be on my side of the DM screen so I can fudge down - to eliminate a monster when a combat has gone on too long - or up - when a BBEG is going down one round too quickly. The players just can't know that stuff and will have to pry that data from my cold, dead hand of Vecna! But, yes, in general anything the players can take on to reduce my DM workload is greatly appreciated. EDIT: of course, after thinking another minute about this, maybe you were refe...

Even though the strike is meant to be a power statement by the Cult, I don't want to accidentally TPK. You got further into Tiamat than my group and I did, so maybe a purchase of Morton Salt (trade goods) would be in order: Yes you do want to try to TPK the group with this. A power statement doesn't work if the intended target survives; the other meddling hero groups learn 'Team Villain is not as tough as they think they are', if Team Hero strides out of the smoke of battle visibly still functional. IMC, my metagame plan was to teach the group to cooperate and good battle tactics. I seriously tried to kill them only with Arauthator (even then I got interested in 'how are they going to get out of this one?' half-way through, and they did) and with the assassins. The Cult Strikes Back scenes SHOULD feel different from the other encounters, like the PCs have made a difference in thwarting / delaying the Cult's plans with all their other activities - and the Cult wants revenge.

  • 04:22 PM - CTurbo quoted akr71 in post A level 20 Wizard of each school vs each other in combat
The 'one concentration spell' ruins it. Give it a 'guess what, roll for initiative' and the War Wizard is top 3. How does the one concentration spell ruin things? I will say that on a one on one combat, a lvl 20 Diviner with a simulacrum will win almost every time. Battle royale style is much harder to predict. I agree to that. The Evoker casts Meteor Swam, sculpts the spell around him/herself. If anything is still alive, follow that up with Sunburst and Prismatic Spray. The Abjurer would survive that if not outright counterspell it. I know if I was the Evoker that would be the first thing I did though.
