    1. Languages by race. Why does my Tiefling who grew up in a human city automatically know Infernal? I would say Background has more bearing than who your parents are. My in-laws are french, but they raised their daughter (my wife, duh) to speaking english in the home. English is her first language and she doesn't really consider herself bilingual. 2. Nope, I'm not thinking about adding that at all. If one of my players asked for a change based on a character concept, I would entertain it. They would have to work with me though. Like you said, a character can't have two 'strong' saves.

LOL! I was going to use karate as an example instead of the 'showing my co-worker the same thing repeatedly.' I've been studying karate for a little more than 2 years and I'm still baffled by the number of people who get to their black belt (sometimes brown) and just ghost. Like that was the goal. No, that's just the beginning - you've now learned enough basics to actually start learning karate!...

Some people, even though they do certain tasks every day or nearly every day, do not improve. They don't want to learn, it doesn't stick - whatever. It doesn't matter. I remind co-workers how to do certain things all the time. Your fighter who is no better at Perception checks at level 20 as he was at level 1 is the same way. If he wanted to become better, the player would choose a feat that...

vincegetorix I think your original idea of removing spell slots from the warlock has merit and would be a refreshing twist on the 'caster' It just might need some fine tuning to get it 'play-ready'

Off the top of my head, I would take some of the warlock only spells (Agathys, Hadar, etc) and turn them into 'once per short rest' Invocations. You could do this with a lot of spells really. Would you have these Invocations get more powerful as the warlock advanced in levels (as if casting with a higher slot)?

I've frequently had this problem too. Players rarely (if ever), want to back down, or run away and it usually ends badly. I don't have a solution to this except hopefully, in time, they learn that if something seems unwinnable, it likely is. If I were in your shoes, I'd ask the players what they want. New adventure or keep going? We had fun with a lot of it, but it did drag on in parts (the...

I had to place a number of healing potions for the characters to find in the first 3 chapters. I also had a few NPCs available for help in certain situations because my group was only 3 people and that felt like certain death at points. If you don't have time for a lot of prep, I would certainly consider something different. HotDQ & RoT took A LOT of prep and tweaking. My group is having a...

Yep, its amazing how many Fighters/Rangers/Paladins there were walking around with 18/00 Strength. ;) We typically did about 4 to 6 arrays of stats and chose the one we liked. Once Unearthed Arcana was published we switched to the quick build system there. I may have even had the Dragon magazine it was first published in. I agree - too fast. My players like to play something new every time and rarely use the same class twice. Throwing new abilities at them every 2 or 3 sessions would mean they wouldn't fully grasp how to use them, or when to use them.

  • 08:47 PM - MNblockhead quoted akr71 in post D&D Beyond Launches
I can't imagine a scenario where I will ever buy the adventures on DnD Beyond, but I have purchased the 3 core books and love it. I'm contemplating buying XGtE and the bits and pieces I want from SCAG & VGtM a la carte. I bought all the rulebooks, including XGE, and it is great to have the books on my phone or laptop and able to easily search across all of them and have the content cross-linked. The only AP I bought was Curse of Strahd, which I kinda regret. I don't get any use out of it. I find the book easier to use. The adventures need to be more than digital books. It is nice that monsters are linked to popup stat blocks, but can already easily search for a monster in DnD Beyond. They need to improve cross-linking within the adventures. For example, the random encounter tables link to the stat blocks, but not to that actual encounter section in the book. So, I roll a random encounter for dire wolves, I can easily jump to the Dire Wolf stat block, but I miss out on the read-out ...

  • 02:27 PM - Jacob Lewis quoted akr71 in post How do we fix the Sorcerer?
Perhaps that is part of the game's charm and popularity. People like to tinker and make it their own - much like LEGO, you can build according to the instructions given, build something completely different or modify the base with a few other pieces you have lying around. Yeah, but I highly doubt anyone has ever said LEGO was "broken" and needed to be "fixed". Big difference between tinkering with a system and claiming it faulty as we see so many times on boards like this.

  • 01:17 PM - Cap'n Kobold quoted akr71 in post Will D&D make strength matter again?
He didn't say that. He said great weapon fighting was "tired", so the reasonable assumption is that he's talking about one handed weapons. And indeed he is; he specifically brings up longsword and battleaxe. He's obviously talking 1H weapons. Unless you're a Hexblade? or Kensai, longswords and battleaxes are Strength-based weapons. Weapon + shield seems to be the most common combination of them, but I've even seen characters dual-wielding them. 2-handed wielding seem to be a little less popular than S&B, but generally characters will go with a dedicated 2-handed weapon if they go that route. Kind of... At will-DPR the rogue/fighter at level 11 will do a little more than the pure fighter (any variety) against most AC's (and against the more common AC's for those levels). ***A single +1 magic weapon likely changes that. However, action surge gets better with that 3rd extra attack and superiority dice continue to grow in number and size as the pure fighter levels. Those 2 thi...
  • 01:11 PM - FrogReaver quoted akr71 in post Will D&D make strength matter again?
ESPECIALLY BOWS! Sure Dex (hand-eye coordination) may factor into aiming, but the draw weight of bows should factor into it. It would likely be too fiddley, but I think +Dex to hit and Str to damage for long bows and short bows. Heck, I'd even add a minimum Str requirement to the long bow (and a few melee weapons) +dex to hit and +str to damage probably should be a thing on most weapons not just bows if you want to get really simulationy. As long as the weapon based classes were compensated somewhere else for now requiring 2 stats to use weapons it wouldn't be bad.

  • 06:40 PM - Ahriri quoted akr71 in post Help With Disruptive Players(?)
This doesn't sound like a table of min/maxers - it sounds like a group of Monty Haul players. Wanting and expecting great stats and great items right out of the gate. Pretty hard to reign it in now - I think you need to restart. I would respectfully suggest that a new DM limit characters to PHB classes and races, maybe add Xanathar's Guide if the player really wants. No special races, no homebrew, unless created by or in conjunction with the DM and magic items are found or earned. No freebies. It will give you the breathing room needed to find your style. Also - you say these are all old friends from school. Do they treat you like that in real life? Not listening, badgering, bullying, etc - until you go along with what they want or give in to them? I looked it up and yes I've been struggling with the proper amount of loot to give out. I've been checking the DMG a lot but it can still be difficult to determine the right amount of gold to dole out for a job under pressure. It's mor...

  • 05:00 PM - The Big BZ quoted akr71 in post Initiative - group or individual?
I used to roll initiative for each opponent individually, but that was a lot of extra work on my part. Now I roll initiative for each type individually - that is, if the party faces 6 goblins, 2 wolves and a goblin boss, the 6 goblins all act on the same initiative count, the 2 wolves on their own roll and the goblin boss on its own roll. Yeah, one of my DMs does this but it still puts the multiple monsters within each group at a disadvantage imo

  • 02:17 AM - quoted akr71 in post Making a bigger Giant Scorpion
^Yes, a purple worm was exactly what I was thinking might hunt these things. Which means it needs to be able to go 'toe-to-toe' with them, or at least slow it down and escape. Of course, if they were magically created by a tribe of nomadic halflings who build their houses on the scorpions' backs - wandering the desert from watering hole to watering hole - the scorpion poison would not have evolved with them to counter their predators. The 'natural' gigantic scorpion with a powerful poison sounds more interesting. That doesn't mean a few individuals couldn't have been captured/charmed by an enterprising bunch of nomads. Somebody warn my players not to wander into the desert... ;) And it's worth pointing out, given its size, the halflings could easily cover the stinger with some kind of metal cap, only to be removed when they go to war (not that a big metal spike wouldn't hurt like the dickens anyway!) and could have side-uses of harvesting the stinger on a regular basis in the sam...

  • 09:48 PM - Quickleaf quoted akr71 in post Making a bigger Giant Scorpion
A giant scorpion is a large sized beast, meaning you could ride it. That is, it could be ridden assuming the rider does not get stung to death... What if you wanted something larger? Say huge to gigantic, similar to the things in Clash of the Titans remake. I mean, its easy enough to scale up with more hit dice and more hit points. You could even use a wyvern as a base - take away the fly speed and bite attack and add an extra claw attack. But what about the poison? Sure, you could make the poison stronger, since the creature is bigger, but is that plausible? A bigger creature should have less need of poison. The giant scorpion in the Monster Manual has poison that does 4d10 poison damage on a failed DC 12 Constitution Save & is a CR 3 creature. A wyvern has poison that does 7d6 poison on a failed DC 15 Constitution Save & is CR 6, so they can both do similar amounts of damage with their poison. Thoughts? How would you make a large creature even larger, specifically when ...

  • 06:38 AM - Li Shenron quoted akr71 in post Handing over the DM reins, now I need a character
More unique than a halfling riding a charging boar though? ;) Mechanically yes, narratively no. :) Maybe I focused my answer too much on the mechanics and not on character concept, but for a one-shot game that's what I would personally look for: to try out some mechanics I haven't yet. Certainly, a battlemaster doesn't have a huge narrative appeal. But I would keep the cool character concepts for a campaign that lasts longer than one evening!

The maneuvers system is definitely worth trying to play at least once during 5e lifetime (not that Barbarian's Rage or Monk's Ki are not worth, but the superiority dice is a more unique mechanics IMHO).

I guess it depends on how you define 'tank.' Certainly a monk does not have the HP of a barbarian, fighter or paladin, but it has been my experience that they are more than capable front line melee fighters. Decent AC and mobile makes them hard to hit, multiple attacks causing the opponents to have to focus on the monk. Sure, the hard to hit part is the good bit for the monk, but at 4th level, a lot of those features and ASIs have not come online yet. In my previous campaign, the monk had a high chance of going unconscious if he went to the front line all alone, and he had high AC and saving throws. Just my 2cp on that. However, if you want to play a monk, do it. Dooooo iiiiiit. :) Maybe a Friar Tuck with quarterstaff type? The PC would need a tonsure.

  • 05:25 PM - Ancalagon quoted akr71 in post How would you best represent astronomy skills in D&D?
Aye. I would not add more skills. But I find tools are far more nebulous in their place in the rules, that adding in endless numbers of them doesn't matter. Especially since they can be easily trained in downtimeand it's not like any of them other than thieves' tools seems to have any significant impact on the "average" game. Yup, I think it's a decent avenue to solve this. The Sage - Astronomer background and skill check of d20 + Intelligent + Proficiency Bonus. Without the background, I would just do an Intelligence check. No proficiency bonus Perhaps a background would be the best?

Next Item: One white glove covered in glass rhinestones This glove is one of a pair (surprise!) belonging to the Rhinemaiden Flosshilde. She lost it one day while she was out shopping in Neverwinter and would reward the finder generously if it is returned. This particular glove enables the wearer to sing contralto very loudly underwater. Next item: a silver dish engraved with design showing a dragon walking across a bridge

Owlbear Token Wearing this feather as an adorment to a cap, headband or tucked behind the ear gives the wearer advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight or smell. Next Item: A small metal cube (2 inches/side) that sounds and feels like it is filled with sand. There is no apparent opening The Sands of Unreason This small metal cube has no effect unless used in an area of sandy terrain, such as on a beach or in desert. There, if the user rolls it upon the ground, a sandstorm with roil up. The sandstorm is a 200' per side cube, it's starting edge beginning where the cube comes to rest. at the start of the users turn, it moves in the direction the cube was rolled at a speed of 100' (always remember to roll the cube away, never towards!), and tumbles the cube with it. Whenever it moves, there is a 2 in 6 chance that the cube will be lost in the sandstorm, and require extensive searching to recover. Once the cube is lost, the sandstorm will dissipate at the end of the ...

Rings of the Pugilist These rings are actually made of brass, but have a brilliant golden color to them. Whether it is due to the enchantment or not is not readily apparent. When one ring is put on each finger of a hand, open hand strikes with that hand do more damage. Double the strength modifier to any damage rolls (minimum 1 damage) when you successfully hit with the hand wearing the Rings of the Pugilist. Strikes with this hand also count as magical attacks for the purposes of overcoming resistances. PS I wanted to make this into some sort of Yuletide item (ie "Five Golden Rings!") but my muse was not with me this morning. More caffeine! Next Item: A braid of course grey hair fashioned into a bracelet. Bracelet of the Korred: As an action, you may pull off a length of hair. The hair may become any piece of mundane equipment less than 5 pounds, or a length of rope up to 100 feet in length. Next up: A little stone statuette of a Gelatinous Cube.

The Sultan's Grief Favored mount of the Sultan Syl-Ralan Pesarkhal of the third dynasty, "Dune-Strider" was also a magnificent war mount and was instrumental in many of the Sultan's most famous victories, which are now lost to the sands of time. Grief stricken upon his noble steed's death, Syl-Ralan had Dune-Strider stuffed, enchanted and eventually moved to his tomb upon the Sultan's death. When the words "Dune Strider, you magnificent beast! Are you ready for battle?" are spoken in any language, the camel will reply "Most definitely your Majesty! I am but your servant - point me in the direction and we shall charge into Glory!" The camel kneels, enabling someone to climb into the saddle at which point Dune Strider stands again. Wind and dust blows in the rider's face for 1 minutes while the camel gallops in place. Next item: a Roc feather quill pen This one is equal parts sad, funny, and just plain bittersweet... :.-(
