    1. Languages by race. Why does my Tiefling who grew up in a human city automatically know Infernal? I would say Background has more bearing than who your parents are. My in-laws are french, but they raised their daughter (my wife, duh) to speaking english in the home. English is her first language and she doesn't really consider herself bilingual. 2. More language nonsense - bring back max #...

Nope, I'm not thinking about adding that at all. If one of my players asked for a change based on a character concept, I would entertain it. They would have to work with me though. Like you said, a character can't have two 'strong' saves.

LOL! I was going to use karate as an example instead of the 'showing my co-worker the same thing repeatedly.' I've been studying karate for a little more than 2 years and I'm still baffled by the number of people who get to their black belt (sometimes brown) and just ghost. Like that was the goal. No, that's just the beginning - you've now learned enough basics to actually start learning karate!...

That's an interesting idea! To be honest, I was surprised that this wasn't a thing in 5e. I skipped from 1e to 5e, so I don't know when it was taken out.

Some people, even though they do certain tasks every day or nearly every day, do not improve. They don't want to learn, it doesn't stick - whatever. It doesn't matter. I remind co-workers how to do certain things all the time. Your fighter who is no better at Perception checks at level 20 as he was at level 1 is the same way. If he wanted to become better, the player would choose a feat that...

vincegetorix I think your original idea of removing spell slots from the warlock has merit and would be a refreshing twist on the 'caster' It just might need some fine tuning to get it 'play-ready'

Off the top of my head, I would take some of the warlock only spells (Agathys, Hadar, etc) and turn them into 'once per short rest' Invocations. You could do this with a lot of spells really. Would you have these Invocations get more powerful as the warlock advanced in levels (as if casting with a higher slot)?

I've frequently had this problem too. Players rarely (if ever), want to back down, or run away and it usually ends badly. I don't have a solution to this except hopefully, in time, they learn that if something seems unwinnable, it likely is. If I were in your shoes, I'd ask the players what they want. New adventure or keep going? We had fun with a lot of it, but it did drag on in parts (the...

I had to place a number of healing potions for the characters to find in the first 3 chapters. I also had a few NPCs available for help in certain situations because my group was only 3 people and that felt like certain death at points. If you don't have time for a lot of prep, I would certainly consider something different. HotDQ & RoT took A LOT of prep and tweaking. My group is having a...

Yep, its amazing how many Fighters/Rangers/Paladins there were walking around with 18/00 Strength. ;) We typically did about 4 to 6 arrays of stats and chose the one we liked. Once Unearthed Arcana was published we switched to the quick build system there. I may have even had the Dragon magazine it was first published in. Choose the class and then roll different # of d6's for the ability...

I agree - too fast. My players like to play something new every time and rarely use the same class twice. Throwing new abilities at them every 2 or 3 sessions would mean they wouldn't fully grasp how to use them, or when to use them.

Yes, movement can be split up during your turn, however you like. Pg 78. PHB The monk's Martial Arts already allows an unarmed strike as a bonus action. So immediately after the monk Attacks, spend 1 ki point to use your bonus action to make 2 unarmed strikes, rather than the usual 1 unarmed strike as a bonus action.

Why would WotC have to hire Dreamscarred Press? If Dreamscarred Press thought it was a worthwhile project they could undertake it themselves, however, browsing their website, supporting 5e doesn't seem to be their thing.

Surprised/not surprised. :p I guessed a few dozen (in the 40 - 60 range). Does this count short story anthologies, cuz technically they're not novels. I've read more than 10, less than 20 (just a guess), but the only ones I enjoyed were the original 6 (Chronicles & Legends) by Weiss & Hickman. The Elven Nations trilogy was merely OK. My wife claims the Meetings Sextet is good, but I have...

There are only 8 days remaining, and my spreadsheet predicts that Mistwell will win by less than $10k. At $9,264,399 the "Legend of Vox Machina Animated Series" Kickstarter has replaced "The World's Best Travel Jacket" as the 6th highest-funded project in Kickstarter history. • 08:33 PM - DM Dave1 mentioned akr71 in post Archetypes
As stated above, taking the Rogue Thief archtype describes what you want perfectly. At level 1 take Expertise with Thieves Tools (for unlocking locks, disarming traps) and Investigation (for finding traps and figuring out how they work). The Fast Hands 3rd level ability allows you to use disarm a trap or open a lock as a Bonus Action. Your alignment preference doesn't even factor into the equation. Or pick up Xanathar's Guide to Everything and choose the Inquisitive archtype. At level 9 you get Advantage on those Investigation checks (hopefully still with Expertise). What akr71 said. Plus take the Guild Artisan background as a locksmith. Pick Tinker's tools to go along with your Thieves' Tools. Maybe later, take a multiclass dip into Wizard just to learn Knock and Arcane Lock. In the end, though, it's not up to the books to make your concept work. It's up to you to make it work. Any 5e DM should be on board - 5e is as flexible as you and your DM want it to be. Remember 5e's basic premise: have fun!

  • 02:06 PM - OB1 mentioned akr71 in post Kids playing dnd?
The advice from akr71 is spot on with my experience over the last year. I started my nieces and nephews ages 7, 9, 11, and 13 with the starter set last Christmas and we continued throughout the year and are getting ready for our second adventure. My wife and I helped them create their characters, Druid, Bard, Cleric and Fighter and as I DM'd she would help them (especially the younger ones) with what they could do while playing along side them as a Paladin who could take the brunt of my attacks if they got into trouble. When the youngest wanted to play Luke Skywalker, it was simply yes, and we created a champion fighter for him named Luke Skywalker, described his longsword as a laser sword, and went on. The pure excitement in his voice every time he would roll a critical 19 and yell "nat 20!" was amazing. For the next campaign that my wife is running (they asked for a Wild West theme) he asked to be Spider Man, so we've made him a Tabaxi Sun Soul Monk who's blasts we will describe as web slingers. ...

  • 02:32 PM - lowkey13 mentioned akr71 in post Survivor Monster Types- DRAGON WINS!
They're overused at this point. Not that undead was much better, but at least there are undead creatures that aren't vampires and zombies to use. Well, as someone who consistently downvoted dragons, I understand your point. That said- Dragons are like the Citizen Kane of D&D monsters at this point. They are so copied, so overused, so spread in popular consciousness that it's hard to see them for the ways in which they are novel and amazing. I mean, even things like the codification of metallic and chromatic dragons, so basic to D&D lore (and borrowed and altered from earlier sources) is pretty amazing, if you think about it. So, I can fully respect Dragons winning. :) PS- Started a new thread. Thought I'd get off the monster kick. And akr71 I haven't forgotten your suggestions; I am trying to think of a good way to do it.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that I will try and post a new survivor thread either later today, or tomorrow. akr71 was nice enough to shoot me some ideas, which I may steal, but since this ended early, and in keeping with the spirit (BOO!) of the season, if someone has another scary/spooky idea, put it in here. Congratulations to the Wraith! I feel .... drained. :)

h/t @akr71 This thread is inspired by the prior threads on the iconic monsters, best cannon fodder, and so on. Most importantly, it was suggested in the past thread and is specially SPOOKY for Halloween 2018! That's right- we are going to find out what Undead, Um, Lives ... this Halloween the old fashioned way- with a Survivor Thread! This is a list of undead from 5e, culled from the sources as described below. IMPORTANT NOTE- DOWNVOTES ARE 3 IN THIS THREAD. REPEAT- DOWNVOTES ARE THREE IN THIS THREAD. Each undead starts with 20 points and you vote for one undead you like which gets 1 point and an undead you dislike which loses 3 points. It is intentional that a negative vote is worth more than a positive vote- first, because we don't want to be here all year. Second, because. Upvotes are in green, downvotes are in in red (unless you are on your phone, and are unable to, in which case please indicate your votes some other way). • 08:30 PM - Satyrn mentioned akr71 in post What happened to the punk aesthetic in D&D?
Aye. Salamandyr and akr71, I'd say exactly the same thing, except that my big homebrew work would be setting up lots of mechanics to reward worshipping and praying to the gods rather than a magical pole. Instead, I turned my effort to (occasionally) making up magic items, because the players will use them.

akr71: Yes, Glazhael (aka "Cloudchaser") is the dragon encountered in the bowels of Skyreach Castle. In my game, he got away, as did Talis, so I had them team up. When we started RoT, I decided to begin with Varram's chapter. I had Talis contact the PCs via sending to give them Varram's whereabouts. They were teleported to Boareskyr Bridge and followed the clues to the tomb. Talis and the dragon were waiting, but once again they were no match for the PCs. On a different note: I am facing a big info dump for my next session, and I'm not entirely sure what to do about it. I'm going to be running the first session of the Council of Waterdeep to start with, so that, along with the draakhorn, is a lot of info for me to just dump in the PCs' laps with minimal interaction on the players' parts. I've also decided to expand on the lead-in to Episode 2 by not having Dala Silmerhelve know everything. Instead, she just knows that Maccath the Crimson knows a lot about the draakhorn. The Council will t...

Just play. Forget about how many session you need to get to level 20 - most of us never get there anyway. Players want to try new characters, campaigns fizzle out, etc. My players have just made 5th level, and are loving how much more powerful they feel with multi-attacks. Don't need to get to 20th level to enjoy the improvement in your character.

  • 07:40 PM - ccs quoted akr71 in post Converting Monsters - which addition is easier to convert from?
I never played 3e through 4e (that is, including 3.5 and Pathfinder), so I have little experience interpreting with stat blocks from those versions. When/if you need to convert a monster from an older version, which edition do you prefer to use to make a 5e version? That is, assuming you can find a stat block from multiple older editions. In the past, I've just run with whichever I've stumbled across first. If I'm running a module, then I convert it from whatever edition it was written for. For ex; we just wrapped up The Mummies Mask, a PF AP that I ran for 5e. So any monsters or whatever that aren't already in 5e I just started with their PF versions. If I'm just pulling a non - 5e monster my general default is 1e. Or where ever it 1st appeared after 1e. Edit: I forgot to mention; If I'm converting a module I don't bother to alter the # of monsters in an encounter. So if a room lists 5 hobgoblins, 5 hobgoblins it is.... I just use the stat block for whatever edition I'm running...

I never played 3e through 4e (that is, including 3.5 and Pathfinder), so I have little experience interpreting with stat blocks from those versions. They are not fun to try to convert to 5e. Not in terms of numeric formulae, and definitely not in terms of making encounters designed for those editions work in 5e. When/if you need to convert a monster from an older version, which edition do you prefer to use to make a 5e version? That is, assuming you can find a stat block from multiple older editions. In the past, I've just run with whichever I've stumbled across first. Two things make conversions easier: familiarity with the two editions in question and similarities between them. 5e has a desultory similarity to 3e in that it uses the d20 core mechanic, has something called feats, and uses a similar take on MCing (which is also similar to the character-with-two-classes rules in AD&D). But, the two don't really play much alike, and aren't trying to accomplish the same things. ...

Previous to 3e Armor Class and Ability scores were handled quite differently, as were saves.

I like it! Its a short, easy to understand and easy to implement supplement. Few of my players (currently none) use shields, but that doesn't mean that my NPCs and villains can't start using shields the way you've laid out. Looking forward to seeing what the 'Fear Compatibility' section looks like. Feat Compatibility you mean :P This will include how the current "Shield Master" feat works with my supplement! Thank you for your positive reception friend :)

As a player, if I chose to stay single classed, I might resent the multiclass character who is effective level 10 while I am level 8 (or 14 at my 11, etc) from the OP original table. not quite lvl10 vs lvl8. He/she would still have HPs of 8th level character and proficiency bonus of 8th level.

I'm not sure how its relevant, except to give you an in to tell me how much more experience you have, but... I began running the game in the early 80's, left the game in the early 90's & found the game again with 5e. No it was more to point out that maybe it's skewed to look at this from the perspective of someone whose been running D&D off and on since the 80's... D&D is seeing an upshift in popular culture which means it's more likely to be explored by PoC for the first time... their impressions aren't going to be shaped by what they can do with it by homebrewing... but by what it is.
  • 03:58 PM - Imaro quoted akr71 in post Thoughts on this article about Black Culture & the D&D team dropping the ball?
Hold on a second! I NEVER told anyone to shut up. I never said the author should not criticize WotC or expect them to work harder to be inclusive and culturally sensitive and I'm certainly not trying to silence anyone's voice. I even went out of the way to state, right from the beginning that my opinion on someone else's claim of cultural insensitivity is irrelevant. I simply stated that the power of D&D is that you can make your own world, or take an existing setting and adapt it to reflect whatever you choose. I DM in the Realms, but I twist, change and adapt things all the time to fit whatever I'm trying to convey to my players. I'm not a professional writer or game designer, so it isn't really that hard. To compare running a D&D campaign to creating a video game or a building a car is absurd. However, I fully support your right to disagree with me and respectfully point out when I might be misinformed or an insensitive ass! How long have you been running D&D? And again we...
  • 02:28 PM - Imaro quoted akr71 in post Thoughts on this article about Black Culture & the D&D team dropping the ball?
I am nowhere near qualified to have a relevant opinion. However, I would recommend the author start with page 31 of the PHB and the description of the Turami human ethnic group: It sounds like the author is looking to the wrong part of Faerun to demonstrate a sophisticated black culture in D&D. I'm also no anthropologist, but jungles are savage. Even the most sophisticated cultures built in the jungle descend into savagery once you get too far from the urban centers. Most importantly, the author should stop looking to the Forgotten Realms to reflect the world they want to play in - make your own! That is the true power of D&D. If you buy a 'canned' adventure or play in some one else's predefined world, it is going to come with all of their preconceptions, notions and cultural baggage. No matter how hard WotC is trying to be inclusive of everyone - and I think that is a good thing - it is pretty difficult to undo all those baked in preconceptions. Oh im not touching this ...

  • 07:17 PM - lowkey13 quoted akr71 in post D&D Videogames- Do you want a mobile/console game?
I would have preferred a mulit-vote/check box style poll - console or pc for me The poll presumes a PC game; I was curious as to what other platforms people would like to see. No phone game please. I have a couple games on my phone, but nothing killer - stupid time-wasters like solitaire or such so I don't get too bored while waiting at the doctor's office, waiting for the wife to try on clothes, etc. I don't see that changing any time in the future. I voted for both, although I'm not much of a phone gamer. I understand that they've been making some better phone games recently, given the massively increased processing power over the last few years. Not sure what would play well, though.

My group is still in HotDQ, but looking ahead I have decided to use portions of Storm King's Thunder to link HotDQ to RoT. I'm trying to strengthen Blagothkus' character and motivations - why is a giant helping the Dragon Cult? I've got a pretty good handle on that, but basically, I'm scrapping the Thay quest in favour of the party trying to bring giantkind to the alliance. Has anyone run SKT as well as the Dragons AP? I have also bought Frozen Castle and may use pieces of that as well. This is exactly what I've done. I've replaced the Metallic Dragons and Thay chapters with the second half of SKT. It's going great! My thoughts: Blagothkus is a member of the Cloud Giant court - Countess Sansuri is his sister or aunt? At the end of HotDQ - assuming Glazhael or Rath Modar escape and report back to the Cult - Skyreach Castle is attacked by a Cultist airship, which the PCs can commandeer and use to get back to Waterdeep. Blagothkus did not kill his son - Iymrith used her shapechange ab...

I write a lot of the adventures/encounters for my players already - what I would really love is the ability to 'drag and drop' WotC stat blocks or otherwise import them into my session prep documents. You can cut and paste stat blocks (plus spells, etc.) into a document from one of the online versions of the 5E System Reference Docs (www.Open5E.com and www.5thSRD.org both work well). It is not perfect - you will need to tweak the formatting, and the SRD doesn't have everything, but it is free and easy. I have been using it for session prep for a while now and it is a big time saver.
  • 04:00 PM - LordEntrails quoted akr71 in post Trap Stat Blocks, Examples, CR and XP
It depends on whether you want to enable the player to have a role in detecting and/or disabling the trap (beyond just saying, "I check for traps" and "I attempt to disable the trap"). What you have is enough to narrate the results of plain vanilla skill checks. What I think Quickleaf is suggesting with his questions is the possibility of allowing the PC an increased* chance of success (up to and including success without a roll) based on the ingenuity of the player. Personally, I think that is more fun, but it does mean more work in preparing (or being quick enough to improvise) the details of the trap, particularly the trigger mechanism. * I guess you could also decrease the chance of success (up to and including failure without a roll) based on a more detailed action declaration by the player, but I'm not sure that increases the fun. Except that you might get to kill the PCs. Ok, maybe it does increase the fun. I agree with allowing the PC's actions to modify the success cha...

    2. Looking up monsters. I don't have the entire MM memorized - I don't know what each creature does. During combat, I either have to have a copy of the stat block or the book in front of me and I am constantly shuffling papers around. Having monster stat blocks available to me at a click of the mouse sounds much more efficient. What bothers me most about this feature being added is there is no good reason you should need this. A well-written adventure would have inline monster stats right there in the encounter. That the current 5e published adventures don't is a sign of atrocious layout and design and a big reason I won't be purchasing any WoTC published adventures probably ever.
