  • 09:15 PM - Oofta mentioned ChameleonX in post How would you portray Shadowfell versions of the four main elemental planes?
I like ChameleonX's descriptions, I'm not sure I could do much better. I will add that when I do shadowfell/feywild I steal quite a bit from TV shows and movies. The shadowfell is a dream world where everything is muted and subdued. Colors struggle to bleed through the gray and shadow, everything looks and smells old and dusty. Even the ground beneath your feat is dry and dusty or a slick greasy feel to the mud. The despair and gloom hang heavy. If you are not careful you will simply lay down and wait to die, no longer caring. So muted senses including sight, touch, smell, hearing. Everything has a dream-like feel to it. So even in a shadowfell plane of fire the fire is going to be muted and colorless. The heat will still hurt but somehow not feel as hot. The feywild is just the opposite. Everything there is just ... more. More intense colors, more brilliant smells and sounds to the point of being almost overwhelming. People feel more alert, like they have suddenly woken from a drea...

  • 06:35 AM - Garthanos quoted ChameleonX in post How To Clone 4E Using 5E Rules
I actually prefer the 5e system, honestly, but it does unbalance the system to a ridiculous degree. A single level of Cleric is enough to get a Wizard in full plate wielding a Greatsword, with minimal impact on Spell Progression AND the ability to heal. Either way, if the intent is to get as close as possible to 4e, then the 3e-style Multi-Classing has to go. For me the first part is the suck and enough to say no or charge feats for it, but i am up for not being needlessly restrictive I was inclined to open up 4es mc some. Perhaps a new feat is a price of multiclassing to a new class? ie that makes it 4e like and makes that Cleric dip pricier? I Yeah, that's why I lumped them together like that. It really depends on how close you want the mechanics to mirror 4th. If you're okay with the 5e class features, then it's not as much work. Otherwise, you basically have to gut each class and start from scratch. I think I might want every class having AEDs I Although, if I was doing this for my o...
  • 04:21 AM - Garthanos quoted ChameleonX in post How To Clone 4E Using 5E Rules
How to Convert 5e to 4e - Add 10 Levels Start at level 5 I was thinking stretching levels instead - Proficiency Bonus = 1/2 Character Level (round down). - Allow all players to take an extra bonus action by spending either an Action and/or all of their movement for a turn (Max 3 Bonus actions). - Add "Second Wind" action for all classes, allowing them to spend hit dice during combat. Optional: Remove the fighter feature of the same name. - Allow all characters to take two reactions per turn, but only one can be an opportunity attack. - Add "Action Surge" as an option for all characters, replace the Fighter feature with the Sentinel feat. - All characters gain ALL of their subclass features at 11th level. Channel Divinity powers are removed from subclasses and given as options at level 1. - Add a similar upgrade and/or specialization at 20th level, in lieu of further class features. - Forbid Multi-Classing. I think this may not be so necessary the strict control of multiclassing wasn't necessari...

  • 08:23 AM - Li Shenron quoted ChameleonX in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
The restriction is on what the druid will do, not what the druid can't do. So, by the strictest interpretation of RAW, any armor the druid chooses to wear cannot be made of metal. Ergo, if a druid finds a suit of plate armor and wears it, then by RAW, that suit of plate armor cannot be (and, retroactively, was never) made of metal, or else the druid would not have worn it! [\logic bomb] And in addition I always say that the RAW doesn't say they "don't" wear it, but rather they "won't", which is future tense. So they "won't" wear it for example tomorrow, but now in the present they "do". Yet when tomorrow comes, it's today and so they can still "do" wear it :D

  • 12:30 AM - ardoughter quoted ChameleonX in post Ranged Options for All Classes
If the Barbarian is raging, they can throw rocks, dead (or alive) enemies, or even a Gnome or Halfling party member. Imagine throwing a Halfling Rogue at a Dragon's face as it flies by. I'd rule that a Sneak Attack for sure. Did that once in an actual game, my barbarian Donk threw the gnome paladin at the bad guys.

  • 12:12 AM - Bacon Bits quoted ChameleonX in post Unearthed Arcana August: Races of Ravnica
Loxodons seem too powerful at first glance. Or, perhaps, the other races seem too weak by comparison. The Simic hybrid is interesting, but I'd like a few more choices of mutations. Viashino is cool, in theory, but obviously inferior to the published lizard folk. I don't think Loxodons seem too powerful. Free Mage Armor is nice, but most characters will outclass it. Remember, it doesn't stack with anything except a shield. Advantage on fear saves is pretty meh. Advantage on scent based skill checks is going to be really hit and miss to the extent that it's as powerful as the DM decides it will be. Truly, the only thing the race really does well is Druid. Simic Hybrid is interesting, although I agree with others that it'd be nice to have a few more selections. Grappling Appendages is weird, though. How many attacks do you get? Viashino's Lashing Tail, on the other hand, seem amazing to me. Sure, it only deals non-magical dagger damage, but so what? A raging Barbarian certainly isn...

  • 06:37 PM - Winterthorn quoted ChameleonX in post Chameleon's Revised Ranger
Would it be better if I reduced the range to 60ft, so that it's basically equivalent to the Paladin's Divine Sense? Yes, my re-editted reply suggests a larger range, but 60 ft. would be very manageable, and somewhat fitting.
  • 06:06 PM - BookBarbarian quoted ChameleonX in post Revised Ranger update
Well, that's the simple solution. The more complex solution would be this Kudos! That does look like a really good Ranger. It incorporates a lot of of the REvised this I like, but moves them to appropriate level, Actually has an Inspiring capstone, and good bonus spells for the PHB subclasses.
  • 11:44 AM - CapnZapp quoted ChameleonX in post Revised Ranger update
If you think the PHB Ranger is too weak, here's the simple solution; Favored Enemy: Add the following sentence: Once per turn, when you hit one of your Favored Enemies with a weapon attack, you may add your proficiency bonus to one of that attack's damage rolls. Primeval Awareness: Delete the phrase, "Expend a spell slot." Add the following to the end of the paragraph, "You can use this feature a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier (Minimum 1). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest. Hide in Plain Sight: replace with UA feature of the same name. Foe Slayer: replace the word "or" with the word "and." Boom. No more problems. Now WotC just needs to publish it. Then I'll boom you.

Primeval Awareness: Delete the phrase, "Expend a spell slot." Add the following to the end of the paragraph, "You can use this feature a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier (Minimum 1). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest. That doesn't address the fact that Primeval Awareness provides more useful information outside of your favored terrain than in it.

  • 04:27 PM - Cap'n Kobold quoted ChameleonX in post Oriental Adventures Update - Feedback/Playtesting requested.
That's the main reason I made it a Fighting Style instead of actually altering the Longsword itself, or making a new weapon. It seems like a good idea to restrict access to a 1d10 slashing Finesse weapon to classes that already have better options using Strength. Your "Use Str or Dex as a Monk" rule rather than Finesse is a good precaution, but apart from Sneak Attack (oh, and Defensive Duellist feat), are there any other mechanics where Finesse matters? (I'd suggest a houserule that GWF style not interact with Sneak attack if that starts looking excessive though.) I would probably just change the Longsword as a weapon rather than have a fighting style that changes its properties. To me, its just a bit too fundamental in terms of how the weapon is used at all rather than the ability of special training to get a bit extra out of it. As a balanced rule mechanic however, your idea works very well. That said, if I did feel like making a "Katana," as a standalone weapon, I'd probably just make it...

Hey, I'm currently working on a project to update the original AD&D Oriental Adventures setting to 5e via the DM's Guild. I figured I'd post some of the material here to see if I'm on the right track, balance-wise. If you guys care to give me feedback and/or playtest some of this stuff for balance, that would be awesome. Sense Enchantment Starting when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain the ability to sense the presence of magic and magical creatures in your vicinity. You may use this feature to duplicate the effects of the Detect Evil and Good or Detect Magic spell as an action. Though these abilities function like spells, they are not magical, and can be used while you are raging. In addition, you do not need to provide any components or spend spell slots. You may use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). You regain any expended uses after a long rest. Arcane Anathema Also at 3rd level, you have been raised practically from bi...

I created a fighting style for the Fighter, Ranger, and Paladin that allows them to treat a Longsword as a Finesse weapon. Although, I might go the Monk route and just say "you can use Dex instead of Strength for the Longsword," to avoid any Defensive Duelist/Sneak Attack shenanigans. I would not worry they can already use a rapier 1d8 so a two handed 1d10 is really nothing average damage for a 1d8 hit is 4.5 so now it is 5.5 with a 2h weapon that is not going to matter that much

Thanks for the helpful replies, guys. I've decided to just do the art myself. I'm fairly competent with MS Paint, as I used to use it to make Megaman sprite comics, so I've just been using that. Results have been okay so far... I just have trouble with digits (hands/feet) and humanoid faces. I'd like to recommend to you: Gimp, https://www.gimp.org/ it has all the powers of Photoshop, but is free!

So, just to clarify; my primary goal in making this thread was to get links to previously completed fan art. Once I had such links, I was going to ask the original artists if I could use them in exchange for some kind of non-monetary compensation, like a shout-out or cross-advertisement for one of their own products, or so forth. I don't think you mean any ill will, and I'm sure your interests are genuine. But what you're asking for is going to go over like a fart in church. As I mentioned, I have worked with A LOT of artists over the past 10 years. And if there's one thing that gets them worked up is someone who asks for free (or relatively free which includes comp copies, exposure, or the dreaded royalties) art. Even though you might not mean to insult them, they hear requests like that ALL THE TIME. And it's incredibly frustrating because art is how they feed their families, for the most part. You mentioned how you didn't want to get ninja'd on your project. You also mentioned h...

Once I had such links, I was going to ask the original artists if I could use them in exchange for some kind of non-monetary compensation This is the problem. If you are (or are hoping to be) being compensated in money, then you need to compensate the people whose works helped to create your product, full stop. Yes, even if it's "fan art." If you don't have the money up front, consider offering a share of the profits. I don't think you're trying to be a jerk here or anything, but there seems to be some trouble viewing this from the artists' perspective. When you e-mail an artist and say, "Hey, can I use that thing you spent time and effort working on, but like for free and then I'm going to sell it"...well, the responses you've gotten here are going to seem tame by comparison. If an artist wrote to you and asked to sell your writing after slapping a few drawings in, but without payin...

Well, I'm not asking for professional quality art that takes weeks to finish. I know I can't get that for free. I'm just talking about decent quality fan art type stuff, like you'd find on deviantart. Like I said, I'm already working on some myself, but it'll take time, so I'm just seeing if anyone felt like contributing. I'm not trying to screw anybody over or anything. Not trying to nitpick, but "taking several weeks to finish" doesn't necessarily mean professional quality. I work with a lot of artists, and pretty often. Most black and white images go for about $100-$200 per page, color goes for about $500-$1000 per page. And these are professional artists. If it took weeks to do that, they would have to sell it for $2K-$3K just to make a living. Art is by far the most expensive part of my products, but it's worth it because artists have to eat too. So a professional quality piece of b/w art could take only a couple hours for a half page or so, but I'd still pay $50-$100 for it. At th...

As long as you pay 'em a fair rate, you're not screwing them over. I'd advise against telling them their art isn't professional enough to deserve pay, though. That might not go down too well. :) If you really really do want 20 dragon pieces for your book (and that is, honestly, hundreds of dollars of art for the minimum quality) why not try a Kickstarter? Go for, say, $2K, which you'll spend on art. And hey, if you get more, that's profit! You can then sell it on DMs Guild just fine for even more revenue. It's a good - and fair - way to approach it. You get your art, a bunch of artists get paid for their work, and you likely ma...

  • 04:14 AM - Xeviat quoted ChameleonX in post The Warlord [New Class]
SO ANYWAY... Does anyone have any comments or suggestions about this Warlord, specifically? Does anything seem unbalanced or unintuitive? Is there anything I should add, like more subclasses, etc? There's a lot going on, and I'd need to mull over it for a while and let it digest. On the surface, I'd rather see more Superiority Dice and more Maneuvers if this is supposed to be the Wizard of maneuvers; then again, I also think the Battlemaster could use less Superiority Dice, at least to start off. I also would rather it not have extra attack, except maybe one of the subclasses. But aside from the specific numbers, I do really like the way you did it. It's simple while still having a lot of options.
